Rain is a Human in need of help… Rain and the thirty other humans living on Omanal are in trouble. Well, not just them, almost everyone living on Omanal’s only arable land is suffering. Several gangs have developed over the last few years, and now they’re competing for territory. The Massoc, the species that owns the planet, can’t be bothered to deal with the rapidly escalating brutality. If the farmers of Omanal stop producing, the Massoc will simply sell the planet off to a company or species that might not let Rain and her people stay there.
This means Rain and her people are caught between a rock and a hard place. They need to remain productive or lose the land their families have been working for the last hundred years. They’re also forced to contend with constant stealing and the potential for violence around every turn from the gangs.
Desperate for help, Rain posts an advertisement on all the closest space stations. The offer is protect the humans and land in exchange for all the food they can eat and a home of their own. She hopes to entice retired military personnel or mercenaries who want a safe place to settle.
What she gets is a massive warrior in his prime from a species she’s never seen before. And not a moment too soon because the competition between the gangs has turned into an all-out war. As an individual, she’s not sure how much he’ll be able to do, but she’s hopeful and welcomes him into her home for however long he agrees to stay.
It doesn’t hurt that he purrs and turns out to be the cuddliest individual she’s ever met!
She won’t blame him when the violence becomes too much and he leaves, but she’s determined to enjoy him while he’s there.
Hesarium is a Talin in search of a human of his own.
Along with a fellow Talin and one human, Hesarium is on a mission to find humans and bring them back to Talarian. While they’re stopped at Ki-Jol station, he finds a request for aid on a notice board. Something about it convinces Hesarium it was written by a human. His companions leave him behind to investigate.
He finds a planet dangerously close to the type of war that will destroy everything. As much as he wants to sweep up all these humans and save them, it’s not so simple. For them to find a new home among the Talins, they’d need to wear collars so they can be declared pets. They’d be cherished and never need to suffer insecurity or work another day in their life, but in exchange, they have to willingly give up their freedom.
It becomes apparent quickly that the key to persuading the humans is convincing a female named Rain to agree. As an added bonus she’s the one he’s living with and by far the most beautiful human he’s met so far.
He’s determined to compel the humans to leave with him before the gang wars raging around them take any more victims, especially his Rain.
Every human in this series has a ridiculously traumatic life, and Rain was no exception. She was eking out an existence where she was working so hard to survive and care for her loved ones. Hes was tender and protective to a fault. He gave Rain a safe place to land. Some of these stories feel a bit repetitive, but I’m hopeful that from the setup for Iris’s story and Georgia’s story, that they will deviate from the norm.
I generally love this series but this one didn’t hit the mark for me. All of the emotional interesting stuff seems to be glossed over! Hes never has to explain the pet situation to Rain because he tells her family off page while she’s unconscious. And this is in the Origins series, where I would expect a lot of talk about how the humans become pets and get to read how the MC deals with that change in status. There’s just a bunch of things that are said to have happened but don’t get explored within the story. Just a bit of a bummer because this has always been a fun series for me.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Mild spoilers 3.5 starts rounded up to 4 Ok, they're still fun, but at this point, we've completely abandoned the "pet play" component for the main couple. Which is a bummer because that's what drew me in and made these books unique. This one was closer to the standard alien-guy-is-obsessed-by-his-human-female archetype. The writing also wasn't the quality I've come to expect from the author. There wasn't any relationship development (ESPECIALLY when you consider how complex the dynamics were in the earlier books, in this one they pretty much jumped right in) and some of the dialogue was clunky i.e. "You're the one who's been giving Jorc, the Gorlag's leader, information!" some big Scooby-Doo energy in that one, also: "Rain was supposed to be my wife but she turned me down. I was the only single guy in the whole community, and she said no!" as far a villain origin stories, that one skews more to pubescent angst than dastardly plot. BUT, it really picked up in the second half. I think because we got to see some more of the "pet" component with the other humans and Talins. The book did a good job of showing the strain poverty can have on family relationships and the characters did have great sexual chemistry.
All in all, I'm going to keep reading the author's work, but I hope we can get back to what made the first stories so original and complex (basically, give me ALL the pet play).
Before this book I had read the whole series at once. Now some months later, I'm revisiting it and it's just as interesting as I remember. There's a part of me that keeps thinking I should be more disturbed by the whole setup of humans as pets, but the author does such a great job describing the whole world she is building that it's actually plausible.
For example, this statement is just funny until we read it through the Talin’s point of view and it becomes easier to see why the Talins worry about the humans so much.
“...humans were far too ready to put themselves in danger. Humans were often a foolishly brave species. The problem was, there was an inverse relationship between their courage and ability to withstand damage.”
And any time I start to think the whole thing is ridiculous, I remember how we think of dogs and cats and things slip disturbingly into place.
A small thing I appreciated and found hilarious is the distinction between shits,
“Horseshit denotes a lie. Dogshit means it’s not worth anything or badly made. Batshit is used to describe someone who’s crazy. Oh, and a person who’s acting like a coward is chickenshit.” …. “Bullshit is the most versatile of the shits…”
At first, it was kind of hard for me to read series where humans were talked about and hated like pets, but it is the best way to protect them in this universe. **I do not want to say too much about the book, so you can enjoy it the adventures as they unfold. The FMC, Rain, has had the weight of responsibility of the entire human settlement, and of her family, on the farming planet in her shoulders. They are being squeezed out of existence by the local gang and know they will not last much longer. The MMC saw a "help wanted posting" by a human looking for help against the gang, and he was hoping to save more humans and maybe find his own human he could bond with. Leaving the planet with only the first step into creating new lives for the humans. Now they have to/get to learn to navigate through Talin society's strict rules and constraints. There are several side stories. Overall, I would recommend this book and the series.
Rain and Hesarium are a great couple. The problems on Omanal, the planet the humans are living on are overwhelming them and Rain has advertised for someone to protect them from marauding gangs. Hesarium, the Talin answers her ad and arrives to protect the humans. Hesarium has met humans before and knows their open and affectionate natures are the answer to the Talin's "fading disease." Rain and Hesarium click immediately but he knows he needs to convince the group of humans to leave Omanal and travel to Talarian. Rain's family is an interesting one and the problems the humans are facing seem overwhelming. Betrayal and the gangs finally force a decision. But the excitement doesn't end there. This book is another winner in the Human Pets of Takin series!
I absolutely loved Hes! He was the definition of a cinnamon roll MMC. I loved how adaptable he was with the humans and their culture. I thought it was fitting that Rain's family adopted him into their lives. It truly was just the sweetest thing ever! Rain was a very likeable character as well. I loved how this story took place in two diverse settings. Though I liked this book, I thought it was a little lengthy and repetitive at times. There were also a few situations that could have been fleshed out a little better (ex: Rain knowing about pets even though Hes never explained, some of the action scenes needing more detail on movement, etc.). That said, this still was a nice addition to the series. I loved how this book explored the scent bonds further and was even diverse in the bonding (MMF relationship). I'm really looking forward to the next book!
I’m enjoying this series. The whole concept of the humans being seen as pets and treated like such fragile creatures with all the Talins (that don’t directly know them) is amusing. Especially when the humans are playing up their fragility to make sure the Talins at large don’t catch on too quickly. Though mostly the Talins (a supposedly advanced species that outlawed physical affection and are not permitted to scent bond to their mates or even raise their own offspring) are desperately eager to please the humans and be granted a small affectionate crutch or embrace. The humans are considered an orphaned species, they no longer have a home world or a government to protect them, so declaring them as pets was the best way the first Talins that found them could think of to rescue them from being lost to extinction or slavery as quickly as possible.
I don't know why I love humans as pets so much. This installment involves shitty terraforming, doomed colonies, and is as much a family drama as it is a romance.
The series takes some hand-waving in a few departments, there are typos and stuff, but the world is solid and I always end up enjoying the romance story. I have already preordered the next book, which is my highest endorsement of a KU series.
Aliens are alien. Sex scenes are fine. MMC is murderous cinnamon roll. Plenty of good side characters, some books only flesh out those that are obviously going to be the MCs in the next installment. Action scenes are a little perfunctory sometimes but that may just be me, I'm in my grimdark era.
This was such a great continuation of the series. Hesarium was such a sweetie! I love how the Talin’s just love humans. 😊 they are so sweet and loving to them! And Hes was so protective and gentle. Love him!! Rain was such a great character as well. Life has been hard being a farmer on a planet that is dying but she is found her best for her and her group. They were so wonderful together. And I loved how you were able to see them come together through different situations and seeing the connection between them. There are steamy scenes and such sweet scenes. Great story and I can’t wait for the next!
I liked the hero and the heroine. He's a "Talin" a species of alien that is not supposed to show affection or raise their own children. So they've found "humans" and to save their lives they've created human pets. They live their own lives but they have to wear collars and they have "owners".
Humans have no homeworld and are constantly killed or taken advantage of. So there is nowhere safe for them to go. Being a "pet" but having enough food and safety is a decent trade off for these humans.
An excellent book about humans desperately trying to survive off Earth. Hesarium comes to protect the colony, of course he has an ulterior motive! The situation on this world comes to a head rapidly and the only thing to be done is go to Talarian. I like this perspective on what might happen to humans when the Earth is no longer habitable. There is heat in this book but it is done well. Still adult rated, NOT for young readers! I could not get to a place where I could leave a review on Amazon, so here I am!
Please read the author's trigger warnings. There is graphic sex, as well as graphic violence. Humans are an endangered species but fill an unacknowledged niche for the Talins. Bad stuff happens. Some of the non-human sapients aren't nice. The worldbuilding is fascinating. Rain and her family are believable and likeable. I'm looking forward to more adventures with these characters.
I love the premise of this, so unusual. Auntie, Rain, Sunny, Cherish, Wind and Royal were such a great family. I love how they all pulled together and I liked how Hes interacted and how quickly they accepted each other. Can’t wait for the next in the series!
Wonderful follow up story you won't be able to put down. The book grabs you from the first page until the last and you'll still want more. Can't wait for the next book
Great story line about humans being pets by the Talin. I enjoyed reading about the humans interacting with the Talins. It would interesting to know in the next book if the Talins can have babies with their human counterparts?
I love all the stories involving the Talins and their pet humans. This was a great addition to the series. Rain was an amazing character as were all of her community (except David). I am looking forward to reading more.
This is my second time reading this. A rarity, for me. I love the Talin books, but I am not sure I would love them as much without the origins stories. So definitely start here!
I like the new colony we're exploring, but there's something kind of missing that the first book had. Not a bad read, but it's just okay. I like the world expansion.
It had been a long time since I had read this series. Fluffy pet series, it was okay - I would have preferred something more substantial but it is a quick read
