Shadows hide our true friends as the light illuminates our enemies.
Recruited as a magical apprentice, Samara trains under a head sorceress with other apprentices. The Sacred Flame coterie is renowned for its reign and raises powerful magic wielders—each member bonds with a familiar to boost the strength of their power beyond any ordinary sorcerer’s. It is an honor to be recruited by the coterie and fight the force rising against the kingdoms.
Samara’s service means that she can help protect the kingdoms, and her family will be provided for and removed from slavery and poverty. Except Samara can’t find a familiar. Having no familiar means she must overcome a formidable opponent that far outweighs her in size and outmatches her in fighting ability. If she fails, she will no longer be a coterie member and will end up either dead or enslaved, and the Sacred Flame coterie will no longer provide for her family.
In her darkest hour, she meets a sarcastic and grumpy dragon who curses himself for finding her companionship appealing. Together, they uncover the secrets of their world and find trouble that tests their skills.

Not what I wanted it to be…but was a pleasant read! I will probably read the next book in the series. The dragon was a ray of grumpy sunshine ☀️ loads of sarcasm and smart remarks that made my day. He finds everyone around him to be an imbecile and it gave me life. Unfortunately, some issues prevented this book from being higher than a 3 star and most of them were because of the writing. The writing seemed middle school level- little to no use of metaphors or any other figurative languages, descriptions were basic, and you know how you can quote things from a book that you found beautifully written and well said? I found none in this book. There were no quotes or lessons that really touched the heart. I also found the pacing of the book to be slow. Took a while for anything of interest to happen that wasn’t the main character going to classes. World building lacked a little bit but wasn’t bad, just lacked clarity in some places. The characters were okay. The main character I found her to be too naive even if the obvious is right in front of her face she still can’t grasp things but I did like her compassion for animals and others. The others had alright personalities but lacked depth. It was hard to connect with anyone. The overall concept of the book was interesting and was a creative idea. I did like the book…just not enough for it to be considered good, it would be average for me.
This was an excellent, exciting, and enjoyable read. It has a wonderful cast of characters, some fantastic world building, and clear evidence in the way it’s written that the author is growing as a writer. I loved this book enough to even ignore my annoyance at the cliffhanger ending, despite my dislike of those. At least I can take comfort from the knowledge that this is an author who is known for not making us wait too long to find out what happens next.
Samara is a 2nd year student at the Sacred Flame Coterie school of magic. The students are training to become guardians to protect three lands from 'the great evil'. The Leader of this school has decided that all the older students must bond with a familiar soon or face the consequences. Samara and Kaine are the only two older students who have not bonded. They are informed they will have to fight some sort of larger than life enemy with strong abilities. On the day of the battle they are sealed away from the Coterie and stripped of their magic as they face 10 giant trolls. The trolls win and carry Samara and Kaine off to their lair and cast them into the dungeon. Kaine is severely wounded but Samara cannot heal him without her magic. While in the dungeon she sees two red eyes watching her. She has never seen any creature like this and the grumpy unknown creature is incensed over her lack of knowledge. He is a small dragon he informs her and is dumbfounded to learn she has never heard of a dragon before. His name is Ulreig and they bond accidentally which restores Samara's magic. He educates Samara and helps her and Kaine escape. Ulreig cautions Samara not to tell anyone of his existence because his kind are hunted and tortured. He explains to her that there is a 4th kingdom known as Dragoria where the Dragons exist but she has never heard of it. They return to the Coterie and are welcomed back. Ulrieg captures an Owl and tells Samara to tell everyone she bonded with an Owl. Ulrieg has the ability to disappear so no one sees him but Samara. This was the first book and I am looking forward to the next one.
This was a terrific book, it engages you from the start, I read it in 2-3 sittings.
It follows the story of Samara and her friend Kaine, both magical apprentices, as they progress through their school for magic wielders, with the caveat of being required to get familiars, to be able to keep their families out of poverty. The story quickly progresses through their training, both gaining power, but failing with acquiring familiars. They are expelled and forced to fight for their lives, and get captured. While imprisoned Samara finds a grumpy dragon familiar, (he finds her), and escapes and helps her friend Kaine, who has also been captured with her. She starts to get hints that things may not be as they seem.
I am looking forward to the next upcoming book to see what comes next.
The Synopsis alone has instantly pulled me. Samara’s struggle to rise above poverty and protect her family gives the story such strong emotional weight, and the added pressure of needing a familiar makes her journey feel even more intense. I love the dynamic of her meeting a sarcastic, grumpy dragon, there’s something really charming about unlikely partnerships that grow into real trust. The mix of magic training, high stakes, hidden secrets, and a world on the edge of danger makes it sound like a gripping fantasy adventure with heart. Definitely feels like the kind of story that blends action, emotion, and humor in all the right ways.
Samara has found her familiar but it is a forbidden dragon she has to keep secret.
Samara is an apprentice witch, half human half elf. While she is a senior apprentice she is told if she doesn’t have a familiar she will have to leave the coterie or fight a bigger badder foe. She finds her dragon after she has battled the trolls with a second elf named Kaine. The tale just grows and grows and has so many turns I can’t give you anymore hints but is worth reading as the author is good at keeping you on your toes or edge of chair. Enjoy a good dragon witch story.
So I read a stupid dragon romance book, and now all my recommendations involve dragons, both here and on amazon. It's cool, I guess. This is gonna be my year of dragon books lol.
This was pretty good! I liked the dragon, although the idea of him being a familiar seems a little off. Aren't they like sentient?? Isn't that a little like having a dwarf or elf familiar? Idk. But I liked this! The blend of witches and dragons seems fun. I'm interested to see where the story goes next.
I love the blurb that tells me about Samara being bonded to a snarky dragon. that was enough to get me interested. The writing is good, and intriguing enough to make me want to read the next one…. Katrina Cope has a world building in this first book that I have read of hers that I would be willing to bet will have me wanting entire series by the end of it. Cannot wait to read the next one
Seems to be a story of apprentices learning their trade, then takes a nasty turn, then a worse one... A dragon familiar is just the ticket! I am reminded of the allegory of the cave when the dragon remarks on the naivete of the group. Hmmm... On to the next one! Great reading!
This series is interesting. It’s not truly original in the sense that it involves a school of magic and talking dragons. The thing that bothers me the most with this series is that it’s written as though by a kid. It’s like the author has to make sure you understand everything she wants you to know about what is happening in the dialogue- she doesn’t trust you to be able to infer anything. I was discussing it with my husband (in total frustration) and he said it perfectly when he said it’s written like an Anime. It’s as though she has to tell you everything she wants you to think within the dialogue. It makes the dialogue “cringey” and totally hard to enjoy. The characters do not “speak” like real people. Ugh. The only reason I continue with this series is that, unless a book is total trash, I tend to finish series just to get to the end. I read this like it’s required reading, only reading the first and/or last sentences in a paragraph and totally skipping some paragraphs altogether. That’s another problem with this book- absolutely no surprises. You can literally skip paragraphs and not miss a single thing of importance. I am looking forward to finishing this series and putting this author on my personal “do not read” list!
Beautifully crafted characters and great storytelling plus the witty dialog keep me immersed into this beginning of the series. The heroine grows slowly into her powers that are enhanced by her sidekick familiar. Wonderfully detailed and thoughtfully written down this series is a must read for anyone loving Dragon adventures.
The author has a way with describing the scenes, characters and story she brings you into the story with all. The story line is excellent and keeps you on the edge of your seat (book, page). This is a must read for all I give it 10 mice paws. Go get this book
Who can resists books about a dragon? Especially a really old grumpy dragon. Loved teh story and the concept and I can see the future of this series may become very dark.
Very well written and extremely edge of my seat. Probably read this book faster than any book I have read in a good while. It's gotten is dragon hooks into me.
