For a short novella that it was pretty good. Based on other reviews, this book seems to sit somewhere in the middle of a series, but I didn’t feel like I was missing something in terms of a back story.
The only thing that made me go for three stars and not any more was that the author kept hopping between first person and third person narration. It was not even changing between chapters, just in the middle. This was very jarring to read.
I was given a copy of the book to read for free in exchange for an honest review

This series of books is really good. They keep me waiting for more with every book I read. Even though they are short stories they are still just as good as a full length book and definitely pack a punch. The suspense always keeps me on the edge of my seat. I’m definitely looking forward to reading more from the author and highly recommend reading this.

As Kiku stepped into Eclipse, the bar her best friend Kenshi owned, time seemed to fall away. The minute she saw him, she fell apart. She thought she was done crying over her mother’s sudden death. But he was there, pulling her into his warm comforting body. He was home. The guy she’d had such a crush on years ago. Had she really thought she’s gotten over him? Never. How had she managed to stay away for so many years?
It took everything Kenshi had not to drag Kiku away and make love to her. He hadn’t realized that he was in love with her until she had left for college. Assuming she would return home after finishing her education, he hadn’t said anything to her, and she hadn’t returned, not for years. Well, she was finally back, and he was going to convince her to stay, to be part of his life and it all started with a kiss he had waited years to share with her.
First, they had to deal with the problems that were hanging over her, chasing her. Kiku was in a catch 22, she had nothing until the Judge could see her mother’s will and probate it. The will and everything else was locked away in the store and the apartment above that had belonged to her. Kiku didn’t have a key. Nor would the Judge give her permission to enter the store. She had to talk with her mother’s lawyer; she had to find him. What little money she has was almost gone, so her first thought had been to find Kenshi; he would help. For now, he wanted her to stay with him while they attended the funeral, and then found a way to get a copy of the will for her. There was even more danger awaiting her and she didn’t have all the facts, yet.
She knew that with the death of her mother the binding spell she had used to keep Kiku hidden from those who hated their family and wanted to see them dead, left her a target easily found. She was aware of the fact that she was different, not completely human. Her mother had been a witch, but she didn’t know why the clan of witches hated her family so much. Revenge is indeed a dish best served cold. For years the Nuri Witch clan had been seeking revenge for past injustices by some in Kiku’s family. Now they were waiting in the shadows. They had found their target and the opportunity to strike. It would be up to Kenshi to share the gruesome tale with her and to keep her safe. What she didn’t know was that Kenshi wasn’t human either. Would she run away again when she found out what he was?
In this paranormal world, Amanda Kimberley has creatively imagined, full of witches, vampires, clairvoyants, kelpies and other beasties she has offered new take on their lifestyles and powers. Within the first few paragraphs, the author gives the reader a quick look back into Kenshi and Kiku’s past friendship, growing up together and their relationship. This look at their past showed how the love they had for each other had grown, but had gone unanswered for years, because each hadn’t voiced it to the other. Now finally coming together would they be able to handle the deadly threat that over shadowed Kiku?
Secondary characters, quickly fill out the cast with personalities that grabbed my attention, making me wonder about their stories and hoping for more in another book.
The story is a quick read for so much happening, but Amanda Kimberly’s creative tale caught my attention from the very beginning and wrapped its coils around me. I fell into her world, finding myself drawn into their story, their lives, even secondary characters tweaking my curiosity, wanting to see how it all played out. I grasped some of the history pretty quickly and threats that lurked around them. However, it took me a minute to wrap my head around the explanation for the killing spree that put Kiku in danger but righted itself when I realized the time period it had taken place, and how long ago, in relation to the present. The warmth of love is prevalent in the language of the tale that surround the main characters, a bit of romantic steam, and some suspense. The tale ends on a on a good note. While I wait, impatiently, looking forward to reading other upcoming books in this series.
