If I’m malfunctioning, I don’t care. There’s only one woman I want.
Atticus, a new limited edition android built specifically for the classroom, is met with a cold reception when he’s won in a bionic lottery by a middle school in St. Morgan, Illinois.
When everyone’s scared of losing their jobs, making connections is nearly impossible. But being assigned as Lucy Warren’s teaching aide has awakened something inside him. He’s adapting, evolving into more than just a machine.
But Lucy is secretive and off the grid. What could she possibly be hiding?
Brand new job. Hot new teacher’s assistant. Oh- he’s a robot, by the way.
After a devastating heartbreak, Lucy tries to get away from the hype and bustle of New Carnegie. But it always seems to find her, even in a small countryside town.
Working with Atticus is dangerous. It puts her in the spotlight. She should be careful, but it’s becoming difficult to ignore the electricity between them.
When destructive rumors begin to spread and threaten to tear them apart, can Atticus help Lucy remember her courage?
This is a cyberpunk, forbidden love, coworkers-to-lovers, cyborg AI romance with no cheating and a HEA. Each book in the New Carnegie Androids series is a stand-alone. You can read it on its own or as part of the series.
I've read almost every book in this series and have loved them, but unfortunately this one was a little disappointing. Don't get me wrong—it was still a nice read and Roxie always kills it with making these androids super sweet and caring (I'm loving the hair petting and cuddling in this one), but things started to fall short for me around 85% in.
Trying to avoid this being spoiler-y, but Atticus's scene-stealing moment near the end felt a little "and everybody clapped" with the way it was described. I also didn't care for what Lucy and Atticus decided to do with their lives after everything was over...it kind of negated some things about Lucy's character for me. The epilogue was sweet and I did like it, but eh...I still wish it had gone down differently.
Still, all in all it's a nice installment to the series and though it's technically a prequel (the events happen before the first book, I think), you can't tell. Can be read as a standalone but it does feature cameos from other characters in the series, so it may be nice to read the rest of the series as well. Two or three mild open-door scenes in the latter half (more of a slow burn), and content warnings are at the very beginning.

Who doesn't love an android romance? And, with this book McClaine delivered again. This story was sweet, and cute, and had moments when you just wanted to hold Atticus and keep him safe. While at other moments, you were completely jealous of Lucy. Now I must backtrack to Atticus because he is more gentlemanly than most men, and having him be so caring and helpful had you swooning. And, Judy, you most definitely knew she was job-driven and needed structure but the more time she spent with Atticus was a treat. The storyline was entertaining, sweet, and heartfelt. It was an enjoyable read!
This is a really wonderful android romance! I liked it a lot! It is emotional and SO compelling.. Charming, lovable, and vulnerable, vibrant characters.

Atticus, a limited edition android made to be used in a classroom environment, was won by an Illinois middle school, one of the five contest winners. He will become teacher Lucy Warren’s aide. It doesn’t take long for the two of them to see the good in each other and a closeness develops. But the inevitable fear of the unknown seems to rise up also as people fear for their jobs being taken over by these innovative machines. So there is always opposition to even the best thought-out ideas. But for Atticus, he begins to feels something different inside of him that makes him “more” than just a machine. All eyes are on him and Lucy to see how this works out. And Lucy doesn’t really want to be put in the spotlight here, especially as she begins to have feelings for her new partner. Will the gossip be too much for her to handle? Will she let the rumors drive them apart? Or does she see the special relationship they have? Is she willing to let that go?
This is one of my favorite series, always providing an excellent story line and amazing androids who capture the reader’s attention as they go beyond expectations every time. The story line plays out against the unrest as people react, most often in fear, to the realistic androids and the horrifying rumors and lies that spread about them. The author does a wonderful job evoking the reader’s emotions by showing the androids as capable of feelings and kindness alongside the hatred of people who see them as machines only. I have read every one of these in eBook format and I have never been disappointed with any of them. The narrator for the audiobook version is Christian Leatherman. He does a great job with the voices to personalize the story and make it easy for the listener to get an accurate impression of what each character is like. It helps to set the mood, familiarize the reader with the characters, and is a pleasant way to “read” and enjoy the book.
'¿Me estás diciendo que crees en el destino, Atticus? 'El destino aún está más allá de mi comprensión', responde Atticus. 'Y, sin embargo, solo hay una mujer que quiero. Así que es completamente posible.'

Atticus de Roxie McClaine Serie New Carnegie Android libro 5
Argumento:
Si estoy fallando, no me importa.
This is the story of Atticus, a limited edition BioNex android, who has been specially programmed to work in a public K-12 school. Lucy has relocated to a small (and small minded) town in Illinois, taking a middle school World History teaching position, which is worlds away from what she knew in New Carnegie, where she grew up and previously worked and grew up. Coming from New Carnegie, she is well aware of and comfortable with androids and what they can accomplish, despite never having previously been in close contact with any androids.
Starting her new job, she immediately volunteers to work with the android, who was initially known as Leo, since he was a Limited Edition. Her administration really does not want the android and wants nothing to do with him. Lucy asks Leo to decide which name he prefers, Spartacus or Atticus, choices based upon her plans to teach her students Greek history. It is the first of many preferences and decisions available to him, and he chooses Atticus.
Over the course of the story, Atticus has an almost instantaneous attraction to Lucy, which he does not quite understand since androids were not supposed to have feelings the way humans do. Likewise, Lucy has growing feelings for Atticus, until their feelings are so strong for each other that they find in each other the partner that they never anticipated finding. This is the spiciest of the books in the series, and I am totally here for it!! A bit of human-droid loving is exciting! 😉
Atticus faces a lot of detractors in small town Illinois, citizens and coworkers who want him gone and/or taken to the dump. He and Lucy battle prejudice and small minded mean people, until ultimately they are free to live with and love one another.
I cheered when Lucy realized that Atticus is a man, just like human males are men. When she decides to take a chance on Atticus and pursue the relationship with him that she truly wants, she took the greatest step to combat the prejudice and bigotry that androids and android-human couples face in this society.
Roxie McClaine's writing skills continue to evolve, the more she writes. I applauded her taking on spicy scenes in Atticus, and hope we see more of these scenes in future additions to this series! Atticus is definitely a five-star read for me! Give Atticus a read and open the door to what we are facing in our own futures as the AI industry contimues to grow. I hope we see the day in my lifetime when we have androids like the BioNex androids!
I won't live long enough for this kind of droid to become real, but I sure wish I would. Atticus is yet another of Roxie McClane's artificial males that looks and behaves like we would imagine our perfect men would look and behave. Without his inhibitor chip, Atticus' emotional processors allow him to "feel," not tactily but with his "heart." He is the newest model of Bio-Nex android, created primarily as an educator's assistant, specifically to the school district in which Lucy Warren has been contracted to teach history to middle schoolers.
Because Lucy came from New Carnegie, where Atticus was made, and therefore assumed to be more familiar with the artificial humanoids than anyone else in her new school, he is assigned and registered to her. In other words, Lucy is Atticus' owner, and he is therefore programmed to follow whatever requests she makes of him.
Personal androids are not yet widely accepted, and many feel that they will replace human workers and put people out of work. Many teachers at Lucy's new school feel that way. It isn't until Atticus shows just how selfless he is by saving the lives of students and teachers alike, as well as sparking an interest in learning in some students who were lagging behind, that the mood begins to change.
Come along with Atticus and Lucy through their introduction to each other...and growing affection...and through the harrowing accidents that could prove fatal to both of them, to their HEA. Each of Ms. McClane's android stories are unique, exciting, educational and touching. You'll want to read every one of them.

I f you read one book out of the New Carnegie Androids series it should be this one. I feel Atticus is the more flushed out of all the android characters in the books. He is a likable guy and its okay as a romantic lead. I liked Lucy too, the passion and love she has for her job is admirable, but I got to say, she is not a person I could trust.
The argument that no one in the school likes Atticus is not enough for me to understand Lucys lack of responsability on her part. She treats him as hers since the moment Atticus is brought to the school. It was difficult for me to empathize with Lucy when all the time I was like "That is so inappropiate or, that is school property". It is seem as acceptable that she does whatever she likes with him just because she "understands him as a independent being".
Moving to the steamy scenes (if you can call them that) OMG I cant get in any mood reading the book steamy scenes, they are sooo dry. I feel nothing reading them, the author should work on that for future projects. It is like, they undress, do the stuff, cuddle: absolutely dry.
But its what I expected from this book, since the moment you pick it up you know how its going to be, so dont expect anything else from this one.

Roxie McClaine's interesting style choice makes this book stand out. she juxtaposes news reports and interviews with the story of Lucy warren, teacher, and Atticus, the android who becomes her teaching assistant, her companion, her friend, and then her love.zit lends poignancy, urgency, and a social/cultural drumbeat that underpins the challenges Lucy faces in getting her principal, fellow teachers, her students, their parents, and the townsfolk in general to accept Atticus in his classroom role, and his social roles as their relationship progresses. Lucy's past has a bearing on the situation, and it takes both human woman and male android quite a bit of courage, not to mention restraint, patience, and the willingness to reach out to friends/allies in the ongoing fight for Atticus' freedom, Lucy's reputation, and their deepening love. The story doesn't really end, but the book's conclusion makes it clear that for this human-android pair, the future holds promise and opportunity in abundance. Great storytelling, excellent characterization, and overall solid understanding of what it is like to be human mall make this book a standout. So says this voluntary ARC review.
a new author for me I really enjoyed this book. It had a very unique concept for android/human relationships which was very entertaining to read. The story was really well written, flowed well at a good pace with interesting well rounded characters. Lucy has been threw so much already and just wanted a fresh start. Atticus becomes more than the sum of his parts and programming and together they change lives at the new small town school they end up in. Not only do they change students lives, but lots of others perceptions on what makes a man, what constitutes being human or alive and attitudes and bias as well. There is such a tenderness and wholesomeness to Atticus' awakening and development and their relationship together. This story also showed how judgemental, close minded and down right miserable humans can be to one another believing that their way is the only right way or their beliefs are the only ones that matter. something we can relate to in our every day lives. A great blend of strength, betrayal, dignity, courage, and so much more. Love the ending how good triumphs over nasty and vindictive. This book will keep u reading to the very last page cheering on Lucy and Atticus.

This is an enchanting love story that grapples with some of the issues about artificial intelligence that are capturing current headlines. It's also a true-to-life depiction of a dedicated, young, middle school teacher, Lucy Warren, struggling with an educational system lacking in resources and a community with some entrenched views that make it hard for newcomers to be accepted. Again, these are issues we find in the news regularly, so there's more to think about in this romance novel than whether Lucy will hook up with her bionic teaching assistant, Atticus. There are a number of different relationships portrayed. We see talented teachers making a far-reaching impact on their students; families supporting or neglecting each other's needs; friends responding to each other's distress; and work colleagues negotiating office politics. The relationship between Lucy and Atticus makes us ponder the question of how we define ourselves as human beings. And if you're looking for a slow-burn romance that pays off big time in the end, you'll find it here.

This book isn’t perfect, but it earns 5 stars from me because I support authors writing more Android romance books/erotica, and the fact that the author seems to love ancient history like I do, even though we are both sci fi readers too (obviously). This had little tidbits of the author in it that didn’t come through in the other books. I enjoyed it.
I do agree the dénouement towards the end was a bit “ and everyone clapped “ like another commenter mentions… these books tend to also have villains that are 100% bad people… because it’s easier to write them that way. I don’t quibble too much on that, because it’s too common for me to dnf about it. I’d be dnf’ing most of the sci fi romance I read.
Also, didn’t seem like Lucy’s character who loves privacy picked another job that dovetailed with that, but at the same time, she is a vocal person and still wanted to teach in some way, and so did Atticus. I don’t know that I would have done the route they did but, eh.
I literally screamed in mortification during the kitchen scene when Atticus came back with the iced tea…. Omg… haha poor Lucy.

This is the fifth book in Roxie’s New Carnegie Android series and all I can say is that it’s as enjoyable as all the others. This series is amazing. It’s so unique and real. The world building is incredible. Since it take place about forty five years in the future, everything is so believable. Sometimes I almost forget it’s not.
Atticus is a different type of android. He’s a limited edition that was designed with a lot more understanding of human emotions because he needs that to assist the teenage students he works with. Lucy is a sweet, intelligent and caring woman who is dedicated to her career. Being a teacher, just like her father, is a true calling. If you think about it, Lucy and Atticus are perfect for each other so there was no surprise that they found themselves falling in love. Of course there is drama, there would be no story without it. But I never for a moment doubted these two would find their way through it together.
… I’m not kidding, I can’t get enough of these android romances. McClaine has fabricated an urban sci-fi future that feels SO real - and within this imaginative world, the characters fall in love SO BEAUTIFULLY. I can’t get enough.
Atticus is a teacher’s assistant, activated for a public school and taken on by a recently transferred big city teacher from New Carnegie. The romance is slooow burn but I get why. These androids have to develop their personalities, their desires, and what they feel - to leap right into high heat would be taking advantage of them.
This prequel has so many cameos of beloved characters!! I know it *could* be read before the rest but I’m glad I read this series in release order. The cameos mean so much more.
I’m excited for where this series is going!! McClaine knows how to introduce that a soul is a soul, whether bionic or organic! ♥️
The New Carnegie Android series has been an enjoyable one to follow and with this fifth book Atticus the trend continues. Atticus is a limited edition android who has been won in a bionic lottery by an Illinois middle school where he is assigned to teacher Lucy Warren, as her aide. I found this new story expertly written, imaginative and immersive as the reader follows the evolution of Atticus into his new role and the tentative bond that soon develops between himself and Lucy. While societal prejudices against androids continues to remain a predominant theme in the series the ultimate backdrop of love sparking between these two completely different individuals, and the drama that results from that bonding definitely brought an additional level of engagement to a perfectly executed read. HEA.

This New Carnegie Android Romance is truly a slow burn. Teacher Lucy and her bionic assistant Atticus work together and live together but don't actually get together until well into the last third of the book. They have instant attraction and the reader sees this and their mutual respect for each other develop into something much deeper. Atticus is a real hero and sustains personal injury while protecting others. These scenes, in my opinion, make this a great book to be developed into a movie! I could see it in my head as I was reading. This installment of the NCAR is set primarily in a rural town in middle America, rather than in a large city. It explores what small town residents feel about Bionics and how their opinions alter as they get to know Atticus.

This was my first Romance book with this context. I've read about monsters, paranormal, hot billionaires etc. But never have I read about a bionic machine made to please the only person he is registered to. Atticus grew in knowledge and abilities as he learned more and more. He developed feelings that he was not supposed to be capable of as he evolved. He is a total simp for Lucy and gave off "harm her and I'll come for you" vibes. When they finally give into their feelings and pull to one another it is so hot. Let's just say Atticus doesn't tire like at all so he won't stop unless instructed to or Lucy is completely and fully satisfied. I loved this story and will be continuing to read Roxie's android books. 4 stars and 2.5 chili peppers of spice.
I have bought every book in this series, and I highly recommend the fifth book in this "Awesome Series". This highly enjoyable story is about Atticus a cyborg teacher model and Lucy Warren who loves teaching and is now worried about job security. Lucy gets paired with Atticus whose been assigned as her teacher's aide. As they work together Atticus' cyborg heart starts to pound for Lucy and begins to bound. Among protesters, uneasiness of her future and their blooming romance, will there be a future for them? I loved the characters, and their romance was touchily romantic, and the storyline was engaging as my eyes were glued to the pages in this copy I received and that I volunteer to read and review.
The New Carnegie series has quickly become one of my go to, one click series and Atticus is no different that the previous novels. I believe this story is meant to be a prequel to Oliver but it still manages to mention characters from the previous books which I loved. I also love how diverse all FMCs are in this series. There is no cookie cutter mold to Roxie's characters and it's nice to be able to envision characters that have similarities to myself! I personally would have liked a little more spice, but the plot was well developed and kept my attention.

This is exactly the book I needed right now. I've long been a fan of the series so that made this look back even better. You could totally start with this one though if you are new. Seeing how Lucy and Atticus began was so heartfelt and awesome. The hints of people from the other books had me giggling and going, wait! what!! the three of them are what?! Lucy was so strong and smart and oh my, Atticus!! I simply can not recommend this book enough. Thank you from the bottom of my android loving heart Roxie♡♡ Le sigh. I want one sooo much♡♡.

This is such a great series and the writing is fantastic! Atticus is a limited edition bionic and has been given the ability to provide emotional support as well as assist teachers in the educational system. Lucy is a teacher starting over at a new school. When none of the teaching staff wants to work with Atticus, she volunteers and becomes the registered owner. This is a very poignant story that shows the fears, prejudice, and small-mindedness of people of anything that is different. A slow-burn romance adds to this excellent read.

"Why is my gratification drive currently reacting so strongly..."
Atticus is a limited edition, special Android designed to be a teaching assistant, and through no fault of her own Lucy finds herself not just working with Atticus, but fully responsible for him.
This done in one story touches on the clash between early adopters of technology and those who "have always done it this way", on different ways of teaching, learning, and managing people as it explores the dynamics between the students as well as among the faculty.
I hope we see Trey again, and a few of the other supporting characters, they livened up the story and kept things fun.
I loved this story. Atticus has been created to provide help, emotional support, and assist teachers in any educational system. Lucy is a new teacher in an Illinois middle school where Atticus has been assigned as her teachers aide. I love how that bonding develops between Lucy and Atticus. While they are falling in love they are fighting the small town fears of androids, prejudices and people who dislike anything new. There is lots of drama and I love how the story emerges into a wonderful HEA for Lucy and Atticus. Great story and I loved the series.

At what point does self-awareness change a “thing” into a living being with rights? Atticus is an android, gifted to a school (who does not trust robots) to help the teachers. Lucy takes on the challenge of overseeing Atticus. Atticus develops and expands his own self-awareness, learns to love, and engage in a human/humanoid relationship. Atticus is instantly attracted to Lucy, as a female. Lucy’s feelings for Atticus evolves quickly. It was a sweet story. It challenges bias, prejudice, and bigotry in society. The story and characters were interesting. The narration was excellent. I received a free copy of this audiobook and am voluntarily leaving my review.
I jumped at the opportunity to read the book before it was officially released because I loved the first three books in the series. Atticus and Lucy complement each other so well that I binged the book in two days!!!! I highly recommend it if you are looking for a Science Fiction Romance that won't leave you disappointed, it has a lot to do with morals but sometimes you can't help who you fall in love with. This was such a cool experience and Roxie is a genius. I have watched play throughs of Detroit: Become Human and I can visually imagine every character while reading.
A sweet romance about two people growing together into more fulfilled versions of themselves. Though both interest, they’re not jumping into a relationship until we are fully invested in their story. This author specialises in comfort reads that leave me smiling on the last page. Dual POV, open door bedroom scenes, fully and enthusiastically consensual. Cameos from characters we meet in other books in the series before their stories start.
Favourite scene was definitely the first time they are chilling on the couch together. <3
Once again Roxie McClaine brings us a wonderful story with heart and heat. I enjoyed the appearance of various characters from earlier stories in the series and the way they are interconnected, however this story can still be enjoyed as a standalone. Atticus and Lucy were both kind, thoughtful and sweet, and their chemistry, as well as their consideration of others, was a joy to read.

I love this series so jumped at the chance to read an ARC for the next installment.
As with the previous stories, it’s a marvelous combination of flawed human main character, a special bionic/android, and a larger situation happening to encourage a slow burn romance. The “Humans First” undercurrent is there adding a some conflict/challenge elements.
As long as this series continues I will be there for every installment!!
This book was great start to finish. I have loved Roxie’s android series. This book can be read as a prequel, stand-alone or book five.
I was excited to get Lucy and Atticus story after following there journey in newspaper articles through the series. There relationship is absolutely adorable. The banter they share as Atticus learns to be human gave had me in stitches. The injustices they suffer are just what I imagine it would be like in real life. She depicts her stories so well they feel like it’s how things would be if wasn’t just a story.
An interesting take on the boss/employee romance. I also really like that this is a bunch of middle schoolers, showing how they mostly parrot back what they hear. Roxie does an amazing job of showing both sides of a prejudice argument.
Lucy is trying to start a new life. When she volunteers to get an assistant teacher. Does he have to be sexy and understanding?.
