From author Ashlyn Lance comes a captivating first in the series book, Moonlight and Fire—a coming of age tale set in a medieval world where magic still reigns. With epic romance, mythical creatures and page-turning battles, this is a book you cannot put down! Come along for the journey as Princess Lunielle grows beyond what she ever thought was possible!
This book had all the elements of a fantasy romance that I love, but wasn't really executed well in my opinion. It felt like the major plot points were mapped out but then everything else surrounding it was used as filler or fluff. That is okay in a lot of situations, but again, it just wasn't executed very well here. That being said, this book was easy to read and was super fast-paced (albeit a little too fast for my taste). The romance develops VERY quickly, and the strife wastes no time showing up. The FMC wasn't my favorite, but she's from another time and place so it's not expected that I'd agree with her every decision. All in all, I would still very much recommend this book to people who like fantasy romance, because that is exactly what it is, and what isn't my cup of tea may be perfectly steeped for someone else.
There wasn't a TON of world building like many other fantasy style books which I was grateful for.
The characters are relatable and well defined I think. Although the MC drives me bonkers. Not sur eif it's because she's a teenager or because she's not very competent or what but I really feel like her whole life she was catered to instead of being shown or trained or taught what she really needed to know.
The Love story is beautiful and I'm pretty curious as to where this whole thing leads.
Other say they blew through this book quickly where I will say the opposite. It has taken me 4 times as long to complete this than any other book I've read. Sometimes the writing was just very dull considering the story was not.
The story could be great but I struggled with the writing style.
Every time I read this book it just gets better. The author put so much detail into the characters and their emotions and just the story in general. This book is so intense that you hardly see the pages go by, and the story is about the couple, but also branches out to future stories to come. I can’t wait to read the next book.
I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, so here it goes: if there would be a .5 I think it would deserve a 3.5 stars.
so… here is what i liked about this book: - the magic- the way magic works is very interesting and easy to understand - the plot- the plot is unique, it doesn’t feel copied from somebody else ( I read a lot of fantasy) and the I can see at least another book coming up to- I’m honestly curious to see where the story goes -the characters- the 3 main characters are well defined, a bit more attention could be given to the others, but all in all the 3 main characters have a structure, and I believe there’s definitely more to uncover about Lord Sepher
and.. here what I struggled with: - the writing: the writing style is not much cup of tea. In my personal opinion it sounds more like a play than a book. Also it’s more like it in the first 10/11 chapters of the book than in the last 6/7 (which i liked best) - the world building: when I read fantasy books, the depiction of the world around the characters it’s like closing my eyes and understanding where they are and how it feels to be there. with this book I feel like a bit more description of the surroundings would be needed, especially because we’re seeing 3 different worlds- the 2 mains are darkness and light (got it… duh!) but how are they? what do i see around me? colours, feeling, air, atmosphere… how is the city? I needed a bit more of that - plot development: as mentioned above, I really liked the story, the timeline and what happens- but things are happening fast, too fast! too many things are just splattered one after the other and not very well explained and described- which is a shame!
All in all, I struggled a bit reading the first 30% of the book- I’ve read a few people decided not to finish the boom after 50%, but it’s actually when the interesting bit happens- so readers… hold strong until the very end! I think this is a good debut book, but I would suggest some editing before moving to the second one (which, honestly, I hope will come out soon).
This author is new to me but I loved this book!! I loved the world that was created and the characters in that world!! Princess Lunielle is a privileged young woman...which she IS a princess, so that makes sense, but her quest is a wake up call for her and it was lovely to see her grow and mature from the slightly spoiled girl she was to a woman who could hold her own and love freely. This story was beautiful and I can't wait until book 2 comes out!!
I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
I thought the characters in the book were well thought out and descriptive. The book started out slow but got better as I continued. Very good plot. The storyline kept you turning the pages. Would recommend this book and will look forward to reading the next book.
I really enjoyed this read. The writing style is so unique and beautiful. It reminds me a little of an old English setting. The world building is very well done and original which I personally find refreshing. The magic system, creatures, and characters are well developed and I enjoyed following the growth of our FMC. I actually love the villain and was very intrigued by his character (low key been routing for him) Overall i found the plot captivating and the story action packed. The ending was sooo good! I can’t believe this is a debut novel and I cannot wait for Book 2!

Thank you to the author and BOMM for sending me the ARC to this interesting read with mythical creatures, exciting magical elements and a heart-warming romance.
With Evenar on the edge of starvation, prophecies are the last hope for a kingdom in ruin. Their unwilling princess, Lunielle, is forced to uphold their demands, sending her on a journey that reveals the darkness that dwells beyond her world.
With the weight of her people’s survival on her shoulders, the princess encounters Aurion, a man with his own secrets to unravel. Working together to save their homes, they soon discover an inexplicable romantic pull that changes destiny and their lives forever.
But when a powerful lord of a mysterious realms falls for the ethereal princess and demands her hand be bound to his, she must decide—her people’s future or her own?
Lunielle was forced out into the world with no training or survival instincts whatsoever. It was hard watching her try to assimilate into the world. She did not instill confidence for the role she was supposed to fulfill.
The romance was sweet and adorable. It was interesting to read and witness them growing closer to each other. Aurion was a well defined character with a deep background. It was action packed and it ended up being an intriguing read.
Thank you to the author and BOMM for giving me early access to this fun new YA Fantasy! This was a great read! I loved the sweet romance aspect and the world building was so fun to read, although it wasn’t quite as in depth as you usually get with a fantasy novel. I really enjoyed the magic and magical creatures woven throughout the book, and found it to be such an original story. I really could imagine the world and characters Lance created and I can not believe this is a debut novel; I truly believe this series is going to be a hit. Can’t wait for book 2, definitely recommend adding this to your TBR!! Moonlight & Fire is out 2.23.2023!
This book is a wonderful debut novel!! I was hooked just in the world building alone and loved how even the way the characters spoke to one another was in period as well. As I mentioned above… it’s a cliffhanger… and I NEED there to be a continuation! Bravo, and I can’t wait to see what’s next!.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This book had so much potential. But first, it took me a while to get into. Then, it just idk... one second I enjoyed it, the next I found it boring as hell. It felt like what needed to be explained wasn't being done well and then things that were meh just had too much limelight.
It was taking me forever to read it so I just gave up.
A very intriguing tale of a princess forced to leave her home to save it. The book has themes of love, magic and danger which all added up to an enjoyable tale. I cannot wait to see where the story goes from here.
A captivating fantasy novel that tells the story of Princess Lunielle, who is forced to go on a journey to save her kingdom from ruin. With the help of Aurion, a man with his own secrets, they soon discover an inexplicable romantic pull that changes their destiny forever. But when a powerful lord demands the princess's hand in marriage, Lunielle must choose between her people's future and her own desires. With epic romance, mythical creatures, and page-turning battles, this is a book that will keep readers on the edge of their seats until the very end.
Such a captivating book, couldn't put it down! Very well written characters and plot! Would highly recommend this book to anybody. I can't wait to see what Ashlyn Lance puts out next.
Moonlight & Fire is a definitive work of art. As I flipped through the pages I could feel the passion and love that Ashlyn Lance put into each character. Lance created a strong connection between Moonflower and Aurion that can be felt throughout the whole book. A true love story that has been lost in these dark times.
The main story was captivating and allowed me to easily read through the whole book. At the same time I grew attached and wanting to hear more about all the other side characters that are met along the journey. The only disappointment I have is that I have to wait for part two!
I can't wait to see what Lance has in store for my favorite character, Solstice!
I am a bit torn writing this because I see so much potential in this world. It was a very fun and fresh concept. Even though it lacked on some world building that is often expected from fantasy, it still was a world that you could understand and follow along with fine enough. I actually kind of appreciated how the story jumped right in without any fuss in insuring the reader understood direction so you could fall into the story itself faster. With that being said I found that the biggest fault was not attributing enough time in developing the characters because it caused me feel little attachments to characters and didn't believe the connections between the ones given because it felt presented instead of understood. With that being said, I adored the villain and the spiteful exes; Everyone of their character drives felt authentic and genuine. There's nothing I love more that when the person in the wrong feels completely justified in there actions. This story also had one of my absolute favorite central themes being "fate dictates all" that creates exciting twists with interpretation, as well as, how fate has such a firm grip that even your choices of free will almost seem predetermined. There was definitely some hiccups with the flow and the writing (which did get better when the scenes turned more dialogue based) but overall I loved the creativity and enjoyed this debut novel. I will keep an eye out for this author and look forward to see how their writing progresses.
This story focuses on Princess Lunielle Evenar who needs to learn how to save her kingdom from starvation by being trained in plant cultivation. Lunielle doesn’t want to do all of this. She meets Aurion and, as they work together, they are attracted to each other.
One of the problems with this story is that the princess, who should be the heroine for her starving people, is not very likable. When the reader can’t relate to the “star of the show”, it is a difficult process to generate interest. It was also difficult to piece together parts of the story and scanty world building to help paint the picture the author needs to show the reader. I am not even sure I felt comfortable about the “romance” between Aurion and his Moonflower. See seemed like the prize all of the bad guys wanted to steal from him. Aurion was my favorite character, however, showing cleverness to fool the evil Lady Vessa, for example. And will Lord Sepher lure Lunielle away from Aurion with the offer of becoming Empress? Or will she promise to go with him if he saves Aurion’s life from the vicious attack by Lady Vessa? What will she do when she learns she is “The Fallen One” and Sepher had known she was Lunielle the entire time. And there is still another secret to be revealed . . .
The story has potential and was getting better by the end, but it needs some work to make the journey there more understandable. Since it is Book 1, it may likely continue to get better as we learn more of the plot and players.
This story follows Princess Lunielle Evenar who is sent to Gaea to learn and master cultivation to save her kingdom from starvation where their plants are dying. When she arrives, she finds a man who is a forager and thinks he can help her learn how to cultivate and save her kingdom.
It’s a slow start to the story, that leads to a lot of action in the end. While reading, you wonder will happen at first because we first learn more about the characters, even the villain! and the world. The writing style is different and at times made me think of Shakespeare, especially with how passionate the characters can be, which I love!
I will admit I had a really hard time getting into this story, and had a hard time understanding the world and how it works and the magic system. I personally love world building, and I think you need it for a fantasy world. The female MC was also not my favorite, but may grow as the series continues. The romance was not very believable for me, but I really do like Aurion, he was quite sweet and adorable! I also really enjoyed the villain!
I’m curious to see how the story continues and see how the characters grow more, especially with how it ended. This is more of a 2.5 star read for me since I just am unsure still how I truly felt about the book, but I have always been pleasantly surprised with how a series continues and ends and will exceed my expectations! The story has a lot of potential and I plan on continuing the series!
I received a free digital copy to read. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I acquired a copy of this in exchange for an honest review.
Moonlight & Fire is a book I was not quite sure about when I first encountered it. I finished the book last year, and have revisited it (and read it again), fully exploring the wonders of this book to be able to grasp what our author would like to convey.
Moonlight & Fire is not a book I would normally read - as the romance aspects are not something I read, as I considered this to be a bit heavy with romance and used as a scapegoat - but the story and cover captivated me. After deep consideration, I concluded that this book is not as well executed as I hoped. The plot is primarily driven by an exuberant amount of fluff and filler (hey, someone might like that either way). At the same time, the writing style is not the easiest to understand, and I felt the conversation between characters to be a little stiff and stilted. The wonderful thing about reading books is that while reading you forget that you are reading. This made me realise that I WAS READING, and I was not getting lost in the story, as readers do.
This book has potential, though. It seems to be an interesting concept, it just needs a bit more work to it!
Thank you so much Ashlyn Lance for sending me this ARC!
Moonlight and Fire is the first book in a Fantasy Romance series about Princess Lunielle, who must go on a quest to another world to save her country and people. While it took me a while to get into this book, after a few chapters I became engrossed in the plot and Lunielle’s journey. In the beginning she was a bit naive, sheltered princess, but I liked how she grew in this book, she gained more confidence and decided to fight to save her world. The romance was a little too insta love for me, but I think there’s going to be a love triangle and I’m curious about how it will pan out. The world building was really interesting and the plot was pretty fast-paced which made finish the book in a few hours. The writing style was very descriptive and gave a fairytale-like feeling. I really enjoyed Moonlight and Fire, it is a good debut novel and I will definitely continue reading about Lunielle and other characters in the next book. If you like fantasy romance books with interesting world building and great character growth, you should give this book a try.
First thing that I feel I need to tell you is that this is all written in the third person. This may or may not affect your reading but I know that for some this is a big deal. Second thing is the very large cliffhanger at the end, that drop is sheer let me tell you! At the start of this bookg Lunielle, although nineteen, is still a very yound and childlike princess. She has been kept away from every day life and as such is not really very world wise. Yet it seems that she is to be sent out on a quest, for want of a better description, one where she needs to sacrifice herself for the sake of her people. She is in effect cast out from her home into the realms below. Unprepared, inexperienced and alone she make her own path as she goes. That is until she sees Aurion. She sees him as he gathers herbs and watches him as he converses with the guards at the gate. She manages to sneak in by pretending to be his girl and it is not long before she starts to wish that was the truth of it as well. She feels safe with him and she tells him of the danger hunting her. Can he help her, will he help her?
I really want to like this book, the synopsis sounds promising and the cover is beautiful which is why I decided to give this one a try. While the world building seems fascinating but it wasn’t explained in detail, I’m still confused by the magic system in this book.
I didn’t like the writing style and the romance aspect of this one. The conversation feels too formal and stiff which makes it weird. The romance happens way too fast and I couldn’t feel the spark between the female MC and the love interest.
I have a hard time connecting with the characters as well, the only character that intrigue me is the villain. I wonder if he’s pure evil or a morally grey character. Maybe there will be more explanation and also the villain’s POV in the next book to understand him better.
The last few chapters pique my interest a little bit with what happened. This book has the potential to be more and if things got more developed and explored, I think it’ll be a great series.
I received an advanced review copy for free through BookSirens, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Thank you to the author and publisher!
3.5 stars A huge thank you to the author Ashlyn Lance who sent me this arc to read via Voracious Readers in return for a review. The overall plot and characters I loved! The demure Princess Lunielle is a likeable character that grows in to her magic and adulthood whilst still keeping a whimsical air to her. Our main love interest Aurion is a fine mix of charming and also loveable rogue growing more heroic and clever as the plot progresses. The villain or second love interest Lord Sepher is deliciously written as is his ex / lover Vessa. The ending has left me wanting to know what happens next!
Two areas I struggled with most whilst reading this; the old world style of speech and how fast everything moved in the first few chapters. I constantly had to reread to try and understand what was happening which I urge anyone struggling to do, as the finale of this book is so good!
In my mind as I was reading I was picturing this as an 80s style historic romantasy much like The Princess Bride.

Moonlight and Fire is the first book in the Fallen Princess series by author Ashlyn Vance. The Fallen Princess series is a young adult fantasy romance. I thought this book was a solid first book to the series, though it felt a little rushed in parts I did enjoy that it was a quick read for me. This is great for readers looking for a coming of age fantasy story and those readers that appreciate age appropriate characters with satisfying character growth.
In Moonlight and Fire we meeting our main characters, Princess Lunielle, who comes across as very young and spoiled at first. Which made perfect sense to me because she is a young princess. She annoyed me at times, but overall I really appreciated her characters growth through her journey and I am looking forward to even more growth in future books. Princess Lunielle is being called upon to try and save her kingdom from Starvation (among other things). Princess Lunielle does not start out as the most enthusiastic helper, but her journey is really eye opening and I enjoyed her much more after she met Aurion, who is a horticulturalist meant to try and help her to restore her kingdoms farmlands. Throw in a prince looking to marry Lunielle and you have the makings of an interesting and easy reading fantasy.
This book was fast paced and there was a nice romance added in. I think this book is perfect for younger readers of ya and for people looking for romantic fantasy adventures with no spice. I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to see where the series is going to go next
Moonlight & Fire is a coming of age slow paced YA Fantasy with an intriguing & character driven plot + a prophecy.
With the huge burden of the prophecy and the sake of her people, Lunielle embarks on a journey to seek answers in reinstating her land to prevent the likelihood of starvation. An adventurous trip filled with magic and secrets, it's the perfect read if you are looking for a cozy high fantasy read.
Honest rating 2.5 stars It's a pity this read didn't stand out to me, as the synopsis sounds promising. It's hard for me to digest the information due to the writing style and flow, but towards the last few chapters, I did see some potential growth in the sequel.
Moonlight & Fire has potential and there was some tropes that I really enjoyed, but there’s just something missing for me. I do like that we weren’t bombarded with so much world building like other fantasy books.
I like Aurion. He is the knight and shining armor that will save you from the vile world kind of guy.
As for Lunielle, she just seems so childish, I was hoping a really good character development from her, but, that didn’t really happen. I do like that she’s not selfish in her own ways, I mean the girl is trying to save her kingdom. She’s just way too whiny for my liking.
Lord Sepher. Okay, I like his character because who doesn’t like the villain? He is the type of man that will burn the world for you and I am here for that.
Honestly my favorite characters are Ulric and Fendrel (I probably misspelled their names). There wasn’t much context on the “love” aspect between the characters, it just sort of happened (in my opinion).
But overall, this had a really shocking ending and WTF?!? I can definitely see it happening with the royalty during that time though.
This was a great start to this new fantasy series. The characters were well fleshed out and realistic, and the imagery was really well done. I was hooked on the story from page one and was continually turning the pages quickly to see how it would all turn out in the end.
Princess Lunielle may seem a little immature, naive and bratty but the growth she goes through on her journey to help her kingdom made her a stronger woman and the kind of princess her kingdom needs. I also enjoyed the sweet and adorable romance between Aurion and Lunielle.
The story is action packed, emotional, danger filled and with little twists and turns that keep you captivated and entertained. Even though the story ends on a cliffhanger, I look forward to reading the next part.
This was a romantasy tale of a young princess sent away to figure out a way to save her kingdom from crisis, a young man with secret lineage, and a villain who may not have the worst intentions.
The story has potential, not boring, and the author put in some well-placed and delightful plot surprises here and there. Unfortunately that’s about all there is to praise about this book. Again, the potential is there but the execution is very amateurish. I am not gonna list or nitpick the stuff that I find lacking about this book, but I believe the author will benefit from reading and writing more stories in this genre. The rating I decided on is relative to the many other books I have read in this genre.
She is the last hope for her people but will princess Lunielle be able to finish her quest? She knows that she doesn’t have a choice as the people are dying but she is afraid. This world isn’t what she was expecting but she needs to learn how to save her world. When she meets Aurion she realises that he is the one to help her. But there is someone that will stop at nothing to have her. Aurion is enthralled by the princess and he will do anything to help her but there is a darkness that will try to destroy everything. Can they fight him or will it be too late? A good read. Great characters. The two worlds are complete opposites and that makes it more interesting. Will they find their way back to each other I really hope so. Thank you Ashlyn for the copy. This is my honest review.
I enjoyed the world building, the storyline and the twist in this book. It was a little slower paced but still had some action which got me through the book.
Two people from different places with hidden lineages and different goals in life until let's say fate throws them together.
What I couldn't quite wrap my head around was how the MMC started off so strong in a sense he had a purpose then changed into a love struck fool, everything became about the FMC. I like romance don't get me wrong but this went beyond romance to the point of ridiculous. Maybe my view is skewed because it is usually the female who becomes the love struck fool.
