When used slowly, for meditation and prayer, these pages have often been used by God's Spirit to kindle my dry heart.' MARK DEVER - - - - - - - - - - The strength of Puritan character and life lay in prayer and meditation. In this practice the spirit of prayer was regarded as of first importance and the best form of prayer, for living prayer is the characteristic of genuine spirituality. Yet prayer is also vocal and may therefore on occasions be written. Consequently in the Puritan tradition there are many written prayers and meditations which constitute an important corpus of inspiring devotional literature. Too often ex tempore prayer lacks variety, order and definiteness. The reason for this lies partly in a neglect of due preparation. It is here that the care and scriptural thoroughness which others found necessary in their approach to God may be of help. This book has been prepared not to 'supply' prayers but to prompt and encourage the Christian as he treads the path on which others have gone before.
This has been a excellent devotional tool and has significantly helpful in my prayer life. I feel like I haven’t even scratched the surface off all the good stuff in here, even after spending over two years going through it. It’s incisively convicting and weirdly accurate in applying encouragement. There were many days I found the prayers putting into words what I couldn’t, and sometimes revealing parts of my heart I hadn’t seen before. The language can be a bit archaic at times, but other than that I highly recommend.
Took me almost a year to go through roughly one of the prayers everyday after my Bible reading was over. It added such a personal, sweet, and edifying time to my routine and challenged me to go deeper in my prayer life. A very helpful tool.
I use this along with daily devotional liturgies such as BE THOU MY VISION, Gibson or THE PSALMS IN 30 DAYS, Wax. I usually insert a consecutive reading where "Intercessions or personal requests" are call for and then move on to current personal prayer list kind of prayer.
Great to use as a devotional. The Puritans are perhaps unmatched in Christian history in their views on various topics, especially in the realm of practical Christianity. Their views of the spiritual disciplines have influenced many Christians since then.
