Καλυτερο απο το πρωτο. Αναφερεται και σε πιο αγνωστες μπαντες. Ειχε ομως καμποσες επαναληψεις απο το πρωτο και μου χτυπησε καπως.

O Brian Slagel μεγάλωσε στην Καλιφόρνια. Ήταν έφηβος στα 70ς όταν λάτρεψε τη heavy μουσική. Δούλευε τότε σε ένα τοπικό δισκάδικο, όπου άρχισε να φέρνει και να προμοτάρει ονόματα που άκουγε, με έμφαση στα nwobhm γκρουπ. Άρχισε να βγάζει το δικό του fanzine και γινόταν σιγά σιγά ο συνδετικός κρίκος της τοπικής σκηνής, ιδιαίτερα μέσα από τις συλλογές Metal Massacre όπου θα ακουγόντουσαν για πρώτη φορά ονόματα όπως οι Metallica, Ratt, Armored Saint κα Η ίδρυση της εταιρείας Metal Blade θα έκανε ακόμα πιο δυνατή την επιρροή του με δεκάδες νέες μπάντες να υπογράφουν…

Το βιβλίο είναι συνέχεια του For The Sake Of Heaviness που γράφτηκε το 2017. Αυτή τη φορά δίνει έμφαση και σε πολλά μικρότερα ονόματα (και είναι πάντα ενδιαφέρον να πέφτει φως σε μικρότερα cult ονόματα του underground) και μέσα από τις σελίδες του μαθαίνουμε πράγματα για το πως πρωτοάκουσε ένα σχήμα, πως υπέγραψαν ή πως τους έχασε μετά από μια μεγαλύτερη εταιρεία, πως κάποιοι δεν τα κατάφεραν να κάνουν μεγάλη επιτυχία ενώ το άξιζαν, πως έχασε κάποιους μέσα από τα χέρια του πριν τους μυριστούν άλλοι, ενώ δε λείπουν οι προσωπικές ιστορίες, η αμοιβαία εκτίμηση και φιλία με τους Metallica, η αγάπη του για τους Maiden αλλά και την άλλη του αγάπη, το να παρακολουθεί αγώνες χόκευ, κάτι που για τον ίδιο λειτουργεί ως αποσυμπίεση, μακριά από την πίεση της δουλειάς για την εταιρεία.

Προφανώς το βιβλίο απευθύνεται σε συγκεκριμένο κοινό, αλλά όσοι μεγαλώσαμε με τις κυκλοφορίες της εταιρείας εδώ θα βρούμε άπειρο υλικό και πληροφορίες για πράγματα που συνοδεύουν εδώ και 42 χρόνια και νομίζω πως θα ήταν πιο πλούσιο αν στο τέλος υπήρχε η καταγραφή όλων των κυκλοφοριών. Τουλάχιστον αυτή τη φορά μιλά περισσότερο για την ίδια την εταιρεία και τη λειτουργίας της, κάτι που είχε αφήσει εκτός στο πρώτο βιβλίο.

Ο Slagel γράφει με απλό τρόπο, όμως παραείναι διπλωματικός σε σημεία, με αποτέλεσμα να μη σκάβει βαθύτερα, αν και είναι κατανοητό ως ένα βαθμό, λόγω της θέσης του και των ισορροπιών που ενδεχομένως να διαταραχτούν. Οι 170 σελίδες φεύγουν νεράκι πάντως, υπάρχει μια εισαγωγή από τον Kerry King ενώ στη μέση υπάρχουν λίγες έγχρωμες φωτογραφίες του, όπου ποζάρει δίπλα σε διάφορες γνωστές φάτσες της σκηνής.

Long time head of independent label Metal Blade Records reflects on how he met up with acts that would make a name for themselves on his label along with passionately discussing his love of sports and longtime friendship with Metallica. Definitely a nice read, especially if you want to see lesser known names get shouted out by a passionate fan that never lost his love for music.

It's a great continuation of the first book. Brian Slagel has lived an incredible life and runs an amazing record label. The only downfall to the book was that many of the stories found in the book seemed to be in the first book. I did enjoy his Iron Maiden breakdown. It will be interesting to see if he writes a third book.

Currently running a record label myself and found this a super inspiring read as a metal fan. Was surprised by the amount of spelling/grammar errors but all in all really enjoyed it!!

Good for metal memoir completists

Much like Brian Slagel‘s first memoir about Metal Blade Records, this one is very surface level. There’s no depth to the stories and no dirt, which is fine but it makes for a fairly dull read. The book could’ve used some form of narrative structure, as opposed to just random memories and it really, really needed a proofreader.
