A Captivating Thrill Ride

I recently finished City At My Feet: Mannahatta Series Book 1 by Thomas More and I could not be more excited about it! This book is an action-packed saga that follows the journey of Sakima Tamanend, a young woman discovering her destiny as a warrior. The fantastical elements of this book are intricately woven together and kept me turning the pages. One thing that really made this book stand out was the author's extraordinary ability to create a realistic and captivating portrayal of the city. More captures the essence of the city, its hidden secrets and unwritten narratives, and brings it to life with his exquisite and intricate prose.

I was especially taken aback by the moral boundaries that become indistinct in the unforgiving nature of the city and the impact it has on its inhabitants. This book is not only an exploration of the city, but of personal enlightenment as well. I was captivated by the heartwarming storyline and engaging characters, and was surprised by the unexpected plot twists.

All in all, City At My Feet is a captivating read and I highly recommend it to those seeking a thrilling literary experience. Fantasy enthusiasts won't want to miss this charming introduction to this series.

City at my Feet is an exciting story set in an intriguing alternate reality. Its the first in a trilogy about a young woman Sakima who yearns to be a heroic warrior. Her path brings from her from her modern world, where Lenape still rule Manahatta, to our metropolis of Manhattan.

Sakima annoyed me in the beginning, but as the action took off, the story drew me in.

The main weakness is there's way too much Deus Ex Machina. The "White Man" came and quickly left because the Lenape had advanced technology left by visitors from the Stars.* I decided not to let it bother me since that wasn't the main story, just the set-up for the world, and it sounded like it was somewhat based on Lenape mythology. However, there was more at the end of the story about Sakima that didn't work for me.

Overall, good story, and I'm looking forward to seeing where the author takes it.

*This did get me thinking alot. How could it realistically have gone differently? And there's multiple points of entry, no single one could change so much. I'd love to read an anthology of alternate history stories imagining various turning points and their impact.

A captivating adventure that introduces us to the remarkable journey of Sakima Tamanend. In a world where legends are born, Sakima is a hero in the making, though she remains unaware of her destiny. As she says goodbye to her childhood, Sakima embarks on a mysterious quest in The Land Below, driven by the desire to prove her worth as a warrior. Her fearless determination shines through as she risks her reputation and even her life to venture through a portal, confronting the towering monster known as Yakwahe to rescue her sister. Throughout her journey on earth, Sakima forms new friendships that provide her with unwavering support. She also encounters a handful of challenges, facing both mythological beasts and human adversaries. The narrative illustrates the difficulty of maintaining self-belief in the face of mistakes, losses, and potential harm to others. Yet, as Sakima battles with her inner doubts, her friends reveal their own mysterious powers, and her family rallies to her side in her darkest moments. This is truly an inspiring and uplifting read, and kept me hooked from start to finish. I highly recommend it!

Great book 1 with all the matching of today’s modern hero. This first series starts with the female hero, Sakima is a well-developed character that many readers will enjoy finding out how things need to change. The world the author create was pretty interesting. It is almost to say it’s a mixture of metropolitan and a bit of European culture. The story is very heartwarming and filled with a lot of fast pace as a warrior should be when the young protagonist woman is the baseline of the journey. The urban quest for change is courageous obstacle for the female hero to embark. To be honest, the 4 chapters got me hook and cannot put the book down.

The journey tested many loyalties against traditions in the city in itself. The family’s hero dynamic was quite interesting bantering and yet the same time very caring for each other. City at my Feet is a wonderful introduction of an intriguing world and the female hero battlefield. This book is a great read and I highly recommend to anyone who is interested in this genre.

Overall, I feel like a mostly got what I expected with this adventure. It was dense. There is a lot of world-building packed in this story and it jumps around quite a lot but there is plenty of tension and high stakes to keep it interesting. The novel centers around Sakima, a girl who grows up in an alternate version of Manhattan which the indigenous people of America never left. It's quite an interesting premise and I liked quite a lot of the loving interaction between Sakima and her family at the start. It sets the groundwork and makes you care a bit later on when Sakima embarks on a mission to become a warrior. The sharp cuts from the action were jarring, and I felt like many of the side characters and the Villains weren't fully developed. So while I did feel for Sakima and her sister when they were in peril I wasn't always immersed in the action. But the creativity is something to be admired. So feel free to check it out if you're interested.

City at my feet

This is an area never explored before: What if the original people of what is now Manhattan, the Lenape (Len-AH-pay), had been allowed to move forward in time to become a modern and even futuristic society, unopposed by the new settlers to America? City At My Feet is an action/adventure novel providing a unique historical perspective, filled with terror and joy, love and determination. Book 1 in the brand new novel in the Mannahatta Series.

I really, really liked this story. Our lead character, Sakima fulfills a classic hero archetype, striving to fulfill a destiny that her community is trying to rob her of. She is one of those protagonists that grabs you from the first moment that she is on the page and never ceases to make the reader cheer for her. If you like the "underdog with the fighting spirit" type of character, you will definitely like this book.

I loved the worldbuilding, especially in the first act of the story in the "Land Above". The blend of mystical spiritualism and futuristic tech was very creative and well-guided by the author's keen ability to set a scene and introduce these unique concepts. It was clear that the aspects of Native American history and culture that serve as the backbone of this story were well researched and well respected, which is greatly appreciated.

The side characters were well written and all serve a clear purpose, especially Janie Jones. She was a genuine, kind person who felt very authentic to me, like someone I could see myself being friends with in real life. It was also really neat to see how her gifts functioned cohesively with Sakima's abilities.

I enjoyed the family drama aspects of this story as well. They're dismissal of Sakima's strengths and dreams was frustrating, but in a good way. It was frustrating in a way that makes the reader side with the protagonist, and feel more connection with her on her journey.

The writing itself is beautiful. The descriptions of color, otherworldly tech and magic helps paint a beautiful picture of each scene, whether being simple setting description or in the heat of the action. The author has a unique style of prose that gives this story a distinct voice, never feeling tonally inconsistent. The unique word choices for certain adjectives and verbs displays More's confidence in his writing ability, a well-earned confidence.

There were a few issues that kept me from loving this story, and instead "only" really liking it. The first being that there are times when New York City feels more like a movie set than an actual place that people live in. Despite the great turmoil happening around( and in some cases because of) the protagonists, emergency services and pedestrians never interact with them. They hardly even notice them. At times, this took me out of the scene. But not enough in a way to dampen my overall enjoyment all that much.

This is a personal preference. But I really didn't need a full explanation of every piece of tech every time one was introduced: how it works, its history, what its made of. I know that kind of thing is common in hard sc-fi. But this story did not strike me as a hard sci-fi story at its core, so some of these long passages felt like out of place info dumps.

Structurally, the narrative was sound. A classic "heroes journey" template which worked really well for this story. But it could have used some streamlining. We did not need to see what the scientists were doing in the "Upper World" so often, and definitely not for as long as some of those scenes went on. This was especially an issue at the end, when the tension of the story is at its highest, and then its cut off for a protracted conversation between scientists about how portals work. That scene could have been moved to the second act and cut down, or even excised completely.

None of these issues hold this story back from being an enjoyable read. They are minor issues in the grand scheme of what is a well-written and clearly a well-researched book. The writer's passion shines through every word and that passion inevitably spreads to the reader to provide a fulfilling, adventurous tale.

I haven’t been this impressed by a book in a long time, perhaps because I have a background in scholarly research myself. This book is a whirlwind! From the start, the author wastes no time, dropping us right into the action with Sakima and her Lenape world. The descriptions of those alien ships and the Lenape warriors are fascinating and engaging. I could practically smell the ozone and hear the war drums! Haha.

Generally, the narrative is quick-paced and action-oriented, swiftly establishing the setting and characters before launching into the main conflict. The tension between traditional Lenape ways and the new sci-fi threats is palpable. The author seamlessly blends elements of science fiction with Native American mythology and culture. There are some cliffhanger chapter endings that are done quite well and had me turning pages way late into the night; the author does a great job of using short, punchy sentences to build suspense.

The dialogue really carries the story, giving us insight into Sakima’s thoughts as she navigates this crazy situation. And speaking of Sakima, what a protagonist! Her struggle to become an ilaok (warrior) in a society that says she can’t be, that to be a woman warrior means losing control of her fate, is the heart of the story. The writing style is character-focused, providing a deep look into her thoughts and feelings, making her a strong, relatable protagonist. While some side characters could use more development, Sakima’s journey is compelling enough to carry the story.

I loved how the author wove the Lenape terms like “Mënatink Ohëlëmi” (Land Below) and “Kishelë” (God) throughout. It is done very well, in a way that is not overwhelming or confusing, and gives the whole thing this unique flavor while educating readers about the culture; it makes the setting and world of the story feel real and lived-in. There’s a glossary in the back that’s very help, as well! This glossary is comprehensive, listing Lenape (Munsee) words alphabetically, with pronunciations and meanings, and even includes some Mohawk and fictional language terms.

What I appreciate most is that the author clearly did their homework on Lenape culture. Beyond the noted glossary, there’s a whole list of research books in the back, covering everything from New York’s natural history to Lenape mythology. This extensive research, including resources like the Lenape Talking Dictionary, shows in the richness of the world-building and demonstrates a commitment to authenticity. The author acknowledges the limitations of their pronunciations and invites corrections from native speakers, showing respect and dedication to cultural accuracy. Love that!

If you’re into books like, for example, “An Ember in the Ashes” or “Trail of Lightning,” I think you’ll probably enjoy this. It’s got a similar blend of mythology and action. The varied sentence structure effectively controls pacing and emphasis.

Overall, this is an ambitious, thoughtful start to a series that blends sci-fi, fantasy, and Indigenous culture in a way I haven’t seen before. Not perfect, of course (no book is), but definitely worth checking out if you want something fresh in the genre.

"City At My Feet: Mannahatta Series: Book 1" takes readers on an enthralling journey into a future world where the Indigenous people of New York City hold the key to a prophecy and a legend waiting to be realized. Author More weaves a rich tapestry of fantasy, blending intricate world-building with a compelling coming-of-age narrative.

The protagonist, Sakima Tamanend, emerges as a character of depth and substance, embodying the spirit of a warrior yet unaware of the destiny that awaits her. The Land Below, a mysterious realm, serves as the backdrop for Sakima's trials and tribulations. Her courage is evident as she faces formidable adversaries, both mythical and human, in her quest to rescue her sister.

What sets this tale apart is its exploration of self-belief amidst adversity. Sakima grapples with the weight of her mistakes and the challenges that threaten to overwhelm her. Through it all, the support of newfound friends and the revelation of her family's latent powers provide a beacon of hope.

The narrative is brought to life through vivid prose and a seamless blend of action and introspection. The world-building is meticulous, painting a vivid picture of a future New York City that feels both familiar and fantastical. The presence of mythical creatures and the fusion of Indigenous culture into the narrative add layers of depth and authenticity.

"City At My Feet" is a promising start to the Mannahatta Series. Fans of intricately crafted fantasy universes will find plenty to explore in this action-packed saga. More has masterfully set the stage for what promises to be an epic journey of self-discovery, destiny, and the enduring power of belief. This book is a must-read for anyone seeking a fresh and immersive fantasy experience.

The Review

I absolutely loved this book. The author did such an incredible job of world-building in this narrative, immediately introducing readers to a world in which Europeans never landed on the North American continent, and the Native American people were allowed the thrive and grow. The narrative then expands to multiple worlds, and the creature development the author draws upon was unique and something not seen often in modern-day YA fantasy and sci-fi series.

Yet to me, it was the character development and cultural inclusivity that really stood out to me. Seeing the emphasis the author put on having a strong, powerful yet relatable, and vulnerable female protagonist was great to see come to fruition, as she embodied the need to embrace our true selves and fight for the future we want for ourselves. The attention to detail the author paid to Native American lore and culture was also amazing, as the culture played a major role in the development of Sakima as a protagonist and the role that family played was also greatly explored through that cultural lens.

The Verdict

Thrilling, captivating, and entertaining, author Thomas Moore’s “City at My Feet” is a must-read YA Sci-Fi and Fantasy novel and a great start to the Mannahatta series. The amazing development of this protagonist, the epic world-shattering action that keeps the reader’s blood pumping, and the thoughtful imagery that brings these worlds to life in the reader’s mind made for a brilliant reading experience.

I have to say, I love the idea of parallel universes, which is what drew me into this book. The moment I read it, I knew I had to pick this book up. I didn't regret it. From the first chapter, I was interested in learning more about Sakima and everything else. Thomas More knows how to do world building really well, and he does his research, too.

This is a different perspective of whether people had never gone to America back in the day and stole where Manhattan is now. Instead, the natives were able to grow and flourish. I've never seen anything like it, and I love reading more stories about the natives in general, especially in the States and Canada, so from the outset, I was hooked. It's interesting to read what their lives would have been like if they'd never been invaded. Jane also interested me a lot as well.

The fight toward the end was hard to put down. I was supposed to get the grass cut today, but I was so into the book that I decided to put it off. I wanted to know the ending, and how it ended was more important to me than some petty chores, and I think other readers will feel the same. The entire book, from start to finish is so good that you can read it in sitting. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys not only parallel universes, but who'd be interested in reading about the natives. I was sad to see the next book isn't out yet because I want more. As soon as it comes out, I'll definitely be reading. I think everyone should give this book and author a chance.

"City At My Feet" by Thomas More is an maginative adventure that delves into the concept of parallel universes and explores a world where Native Americans thrive in an alternate version of Manhattan. The author's remarkable world-building skills and meticulous research shine through, creating a unique setting that draws readers in from the first chapter.

One of the highlights of the book is its strong female protagonist, Sakima, whose loyalty, tradition, and courage make her a compelling character to follow. The portrayal of native customs, language, and ideologies adds depth and authenticity to the narrative, further enhancing the reading experience.

While the novel is dense and jumps between various realms, the high stakes and tension keep the story engaging. However, some readers may find the sharp transitions between action sequences and slower moments jarring. Additionally, certain side characters and villains could have been better developed to enhance the overall immersion in the story. As a personal note, I feel the story has a weird pacing, where the chapters are only a couple of pages long and the actions are spread out over multiple chapters, as if the author wanted to use a page break but used a chapter break instead. This may be just me, but I've seen it in many books lately and I'm not comfortable with that kind of scene-breaking cuts.

Despite these minor flaws, "City At My Feet" is a gripping and thought-provoking read that will appeal to those who enjoy exploring parallel universes and have an interest in the lives of Native American cultures.

"City at My Feet" presents readers with an intriguing blend of world-building and cultures. The book's premise is undeniably unique, weaving together realms that encompass both the mythical and the advanced, all within a modern-day setting.

The exploration of Native American customs, language, and ideologies is a standout feature of this narrative. More's careful research and attention to detail shine through, creating a world that feels both familiar and distinctly different. The interplay between these cultural elements and the shifting realms adds depth and complexity to the story.

Sakima, the central character, is a well-crafted protagonist with qualities that resonate with readers. Her commitment to tradition and her ability to face danger head-on are admirable traits that drive the narrative forward. The dynamics within her family are realistically portrayed, setting the stage for the challenges they encounter as the story unfolds.

The action sequences and depictions of weaponry are skillfully done, particularly in the latter part of the book. More's ability to craft intense moments and pivotal scenes is commendable and keeps the reader engaged.

"City at My Feet" serves as an engaging introduction to a world full of promise and intrigue. The story had me captivated, and I found myself eagerly turning the pages in just a matter of days. The anticipation of what lies ahead for Sakima and her tribe is palpable, leaving me eager to delve into the next installment.

This narrative intrigued me and was entertaining. This is the first science fiction I've read that features indigenous people and their complex, family-centered culture. The Lenape people were taken out of the typical timepiece and put in a fantasy, future setting, which I thought was a really intriguing juxtaposition.
Particularly well-done and fascinating was the cover. This is a good cover to use if you're going to judge a book by its cover! It immediately captivated me.
The dialogue was my only issue. At times, it seemed out of the ordinary. The awkwardness of some of the dialogues may have been deliberate in order to highlight the characteristics of our characters.
The names, the creatures/tech, and the history were all wonderful. A prequel concerning the Star Walkers' initial arrival would be fascinating, in my opinion. I didn't anticipate multiverse travel, but I thought it was a pretty cool addition. I believe that the universe itself is fascinating enough to explore on your own!
The combination of futuristic science with legendary motifs, which the author masterfully achieved, produced a deeper layer of meaning that was understood in the unconscious mind. All those things, including time travel and alternate universes, are yours. Young Sakima, the protagonist of this story, aspires to be a warrior. However, her dream is fulfilled earlier than she anticipated after entering a universe through a portal.

This was an action-packed book with crossovers between the real (if futuristic) world and another, even more futuristic.
I'm not sure if this author has written something earlier in this world, but I'd be interested in reading more about what led to Mannahatta becoming the world that's described. Although the author mentions some things, I think it would be great to experience them along with the characters, especially when they first encountered the star travellers. That's definitely fertile ground for a prequel if nothing has been written at this point. :-)
I loved Sakima, the protagonist. I loved that she wanted to be a great warrior but that it wasn't quite as easy as she'd thought it was going to be. So many stories like this have the protagonist great at everything from the first moment, but that wasn't the case here, which was refreshing. There were certainly a lot of things she had to contend with and I enjoyed seeing her overcome each challenge she faced.
I wasn't quite as enamoured with the antagonists. It would have been great for them to have had a little more depth to their characters. Also, I think the story was a bit on the complex side at times, with a lot of worlds to keep track of.
But Sakima's journey made up for that. And I always love a protagonist who comes complete with a bow and arrow. They're bound to endear me every time!

"City At My Feet" wraps you up in a thrilling fantasy adventure that's just as deep as it is exciting. Thomas More takes us into Mannahatta, a vivid parallel world where myths whisper truths and spirits cheer on the brave. Here, we follow Sakima Tamanend, a young hero on a quest to save her world, transforming from a determined teen into a powerful warrior before our eyes. This novel gives us a whole new way to see New York City, as a place filled with ancient dangers and wise guides, making the familiar feel magically new.

The story skillfully mixes edge-of-your-seat action with meaningful moments, diving into big themes like facing fears, embracing who you are, and the bravery it takes to change things for the better. The world Thomas More creates is fascinating, merging the rich cultures of pre-European North America with the complexities of today, all through a setting that feels both wildly imaginative and deeply real. Sakima is the kind of hero you can't help but root for, showing us the power of sticking to your guns even when the going gets tough.

"City At My Feet" is a book that not only entertains but leaves you thinking, making it a perfect pick for young adults and anyone who loves getting lost in a fantasy world. It promises an unforgettable journey through hidden portals into the heart of what it means to be a hero.

City At My Feet is full of universal themes young people often face— acting in the face of fear, the loss of a fellow young person, accepting your true self even though family is telling you that you must be a certain way, follow a certain path, and that even though you may be told that “this is the way it has always been in your community and that things shouldn’t change” sometimes it is better that things do change, and sometimes you have to be the one to change them. And then there is the not so common experiences in the book— like traveling through portals… Although this book doesn’t appear to be YA, I think that young women especially would enjoy this book over any other audience.

This novel holds interesting world building. Largely the world is a blend of what we tend to understand North America to be like before the Europeans arrived, which I found to be the most interesting aspect of the story, and a more modern world.

Although I felt the opening was a bit slow and dialogue occasionally falls on the obvious or cliché, it is clear the author took a lot of care in the research and development of the world building here and the protagonist Sakima is well developed and easy to root for.

Thomas More delivers an exhilarating debut that seamlessly merges Indigenous mythology with inventive sci-fi elements. Sakima is a fierce, determined protagonist whose struggle against tradition resonates powerfully throughout the narrative. Her journey from forbidden warrior-in-training to dimensional hero crackles with urgency and authentic emotion.
The worldbuilding shines brightest in the Lenape-inspired "Land Above," where spiritual traditions coexist with advanced technology in ways that feel organic rather than forced. More's research is evident but never intrusive, with Lenape terms woven naturally into the prose and supported by a helpful glossary. The contrast between Sakima's orderly homeland and our chaotic New York creates compelling tension.
While the pacing occasionally stumbles during technical explanations, the core adventure never loses momentum. The action sequences are visceral and well-choreographed, particularly in the climactic confrontation. Sakima's partnership with streetwise New Yorkers adds genuine warmth and humor to balance the high stakes.
This is portal fantasy with purpose, offering both thrilling escapism and thoughtful cultural representation. Highly recommended for readers seeking something beyond typical genre fare.

There is a wonderful sense of world building in City At My Feet by Thomas More. The premise for this book is unique, with the travel between realms covering mythical and advanced lands, as well as a modern day setting, and it was interesting to compare the duality of these ideas. Combined with the native customs, language, and ideologies of the Native American tribes, I was hooked by this book and it's characters.

I enjoy strong female leads and Sakima was someone I really got to know throughout these pages. I enjoyed her approach of loyalty and tradition, and also how she was able to respond to the danger of her situation. Her wider family were interesting too, with their dialogue feeling really well crafted and organic. I got a sense of their closeness in the early part and it laid the foundation well for when the threats to Sakima and her family presents itself. More writes the action and the use of weaponry well, with a few key areas in the second half really standing out for me.

City At My Feet is a great introduction to a deep and intriguing world and I flew through this book in an matter of days. I look forward to what comes next for Sakima and her tribe.

"City at My Feet: Mannahatta Series Book 1" by Thomas More, was a wholly unique and interesting story I think you will enjoy. This novel presents a fascinating blend of the contemporary and historical, seamlessly bridging the past and the future. At the heart of the narrative is Sakima Tamanend, a formidable female protagonist embarking on a profound journey to unlock her warrior potential.

This alternative history tale, woven with such precision and care, will take you out of this world and into hers.

What sets this book apart is the author's ability to depict the city vividly. More's writing skillfully unveils the city's hidden stories and secrets, bringing it to life in a captivating way. City At My Feet is an exhilarating journey into a reimagined New York City, where the rich tapestry of Indigenous heritage is interwoven with a futuristic narrative. Thomas More crafts a compelling story around Sakima Tamanend, a character whose depth and resilience shine as she embarks on her warrior quest. The novel masterfully combines elements of myth and legend with the struggles and triumphs of young adulthood, set against the backdrop of a city that is both familiar and fantastical.

More’s narrative prowess is evident in his vivid descriptions of Mannahatta, where the modern urban landscape is transformed into a realm of magic and mystery. The characters are relatable and multifaceted, making their journeys through trials and triumphs deeply engaging. The blend of action, character development, and thematic depth makes this book a standout, providing readers with a fresh perspective on heroism, identity, and the power of belief in oneself.

The exploration of themes such as self-discovery, courage, and the significance of community adds layers of meaning to the thrilling plot, inviting readers to reflect on their own lives and the environments they inhabit.

I found this story to be fun and original. I have never read a sci-fi quite like this involving
indigenous peoples and their rich, family-oriented culture. Pulling the Lenape nation from the normal period-piece and placing them in a fantastical, futuristic setting was a really interesting juxtaposition that I thoroughly enjoyed.

The cover was especially well done and intriguing. If you’re going to judge a book by its cover, this is a good cover to do it with! It drew me in right away.

My only qualm was the dialogue. It felt unnatural at times. Some of the exchanges were a bit awkward and that could have been on purpose to help paint our character’s personalities.

I loved all the names, the creatures/tech, the history. I think a prequel would be really neat to read about when the Star Walkers first arrived. Wasn’t expecting there to be multiverse travel - but thought that was something really neat to add to. I think the world in itself was interesting enough to explore on its own!

A rebellious young woman challenges the strictures of her society…

…And sets off a tumultuous sequence of events that propel her from world to world. Sikima hails from ‘Mannahatta,’ an alternate version of Manhattan, where the native Americans still reign with the aid of incredibly advanced technology. She follows a detested rival and his demonic ally from her world to ours, where she finds allies and enemies alike.

I found Mannahatta detailed and distinct, though some things left me puzzled, like why the quasi-mechanical animals were created in the first place, along with the absolute blind arrogance of their makers. Likewise, Sakima’s enemies fell in too quickly with each other, and it seemed a bit of a stretch when one of her new allies proved to have supernatural abilities. The book concludes satisfactorily, but it is also the first in a series.

‘City at my Feet’ should appeal to those who like high-tech action tinged with the supernatural, and those who enjoy reading about unusual societies.

The book is filled with action, adventure, and suspense as Sakima risks everything to save her sister from a terrifying monster called Yakwahe. Along the way, she makes new friends and encounters both mythological and human monsters, all while learning important lessons about herself and the world around her.

One of the strengths of "City at My Feet: Mannahatta" is the world-building. More has created a rich and detailed universe that is both familiar and fantastical. The blending of Native American mythology and futuristic technology creates a unique and compelling setting that is sure to captivate readers.
