Linger On: The Velvet Underground

Rate this book
Linger The Velvet Underground By Ignacio Julià | Edited by Eva Prinz Bobby Gillespie | Deb Googe | Thurston Moore Principal James Hamilton Ecstatic Peace Library | 9780997285062 244 pages Ecstatic Peace Library announce Linger On by Velvets-obsessed music journalist Ignacio Julià. This sumptuous new volume features interviews with Lou Reed, John Cale, Moe Tucker, Doug Yule, Nico, and the most in-depth interviews ever granted by Sterling Morrison, as well as never-before-published photographs by James Hamilton. The author of Linger On is an internationally respected and trusted Velvet Underground chronicler; he is the Barcelona-based rock n' roll editor Ignacio Julià, who also published books in Spanish and English on American post-punk band Sonic Youth. When members of The Velvet Underground toured in Spain Ruta 66 journalist Ignacio Julià was usually among their entourage, front row center at curtain call, backstage after the gig, in attendance of afterparties and sometimes discovered in the band's hotel rooms until lobby call. Since 1985, Ignacio Julià has obsessively followed the band's career, interviewing and wining and dining the members over the years, and publishing countless articles, intimate profiles and books in Spanish and English on The Velvet Underground. He is known among international Velvets fan clubs as one of the most dedicated chroniclers and archivists of studio bootlegs, live concert recordings, writings, and poetry to the extent that even the band's own members refer to his knowledge for fact-checking purposes. 11.7(H) x 8.3(W) in; Portrait; 244 pages + PPC.

Thurston Moore said something like "this is the Velvet Underground book to end all Velvet Underground books", but it can easily be argued that this actually isn't a Velvet Underground book at all (!)

The book consists of interviews with the Velvets and a few others from the late seventies onwards. A lot of it is interviews with Reed and Cale about their respective solo careers in the 80s and 90s, and for someone like me who loves the VU but don't care much about Cale & Reed's post 1980-output it gets quite boring at times. The interviews with Sterling and Moe are more interesting but there's nothing particularly new there either. There's some really nice pictures though.

Lavish, if not decadent, publication of some incredibly insightful interviews by Ignacio Julià with members of VU across many years. Some wonderful reprinted photos in this book as well. A more affordable edition would go a long way toward making this book more accessible and less elitist, which might be a good chance to correct the innumerable mistakes in the copy. Big thanks to Thurston Moore for publishing this, yet why he thought we need to see his corndog mug front and center at the beginning of this book, or at all, is beyond me.

Great content, horribly formatted and riddled with grammatical errors on pretty much every page - does not appear to have been proof read
