.
If you’re reading this, chances are your current or future role involves quick interpretation and decision making based partly upon the information presented within the 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG). This is a difficult topic for new nurses to learn without proper guidance. This text is of course, presented from the nurse’s perspective but it’s my hope that it will provide great benefit to new nurses, paramedic students, medical students, and medical interns alike.
.
Just a few housekeeping items! First, I’m going to assume the reader has at least an introductory understanding of basic cardiac rhythm interpretation since we won’t be spending much time on the topic. Here we’ll be building upon that knowledge and begin putting together the puzzle of information that the entire 12-lead ECG represents.
.
Second, we will cover everything from positive, negative, & biphasic waveforms and how vectors affect the limb and precordial leads to... bundle branch block interpretation, axis determination, coronary artery domains, and culprit vessel identification. You’ll learn everything you need to be successful in the acute care setting.
.
What we will not be covering are topics such right heart strain and the S1, Q3, T3 pattern, ventricular tachycardia versus SVT with aberrancy, Sgarbossa criteria for STEMI, and other special strain pattern conditions. These topics are interesting no doubt, but the opportunity cost of covering these at the expense of brevity is not ideal for our purposes here.
.
Finally, I chose to write this book in a laid back and conversational style. I’ve written for academia and peer review in the past and I find the formality less entertaining and at risk for being stale. Let’s keep it loose here.
