Brigid isn't doing well after her battle with the witches. She's beat up, and she lost Gabe, literally. Her call for help brought her human best friend, but she hasn't any magic although she makes up for it with enthusiasm.
To get her stolen magic back, Brigid's going to have to master the magic she has left. Putting a call out to her Fae great grandfather could be the best idea yet, or it could be the worst. The Fae aren't known for their compassion.
Oh, and side note, unicorns are real dicks.
Together with her protector, Mr. Mittens, Megan, her bestie, and the local werewolf pack, can Brigid defeat the witches this time? Or is everything else adding up to even more disaster?
Jilleen Dolbeare is the author of the Shadow Winged Chronicles, an urban fantasy series about a shape-shifting bush pilot in Alaska.
She loves riding horses, warm ocean beaches, and long walks in the mountains, none of which she can do in the Arctic, so she writes.
Her activities are riding her four-wheeler on cold ocean beaches (often frozen or covered with ice), and long walks to and from work when it’s 40 below—in the dark. She does keep her stakes sharp for those vamps that show up during the 67 days of night.
Jilleen lives with her husband and two hungry cats in Barrow, Alaska where she also discovered her love and admiration of the Inupiaq people and their folklore.
Honestly? Let’s talk about what’s-his-name Gabe for a second? Can you say TSTL (too stupid to live)? It’s almost like he wanted to remain subjugated to Sofia and/or continue being her boy toy. For someone who was so adamant about not being controlled by witches to the point he divorced his first wife because of it, he didn’t seem too upset when the spell was unlocked, nor did he choose to escape, even at the last minute at the clinic knowing they were coming for him. Also, she was beat to hell and he didn’t even care??! Like, what a douche canoe?!!
Then there’s our FMC. I just couldn’t with her. Maybe it’s more realistic to not grasp power quickly and easily, to not ‘woman up’ and to be constantly confused and making the dumbest decisions - but that’s why I read fiction. I don’t want reality. I want a badass. This chick? Dumbass.
Also, this author’s writing style is…almost too much?! It feels hurried as you read. One thing after another after another. Not enough paragraphs maybe? Or just not making time pass in a non-rushed, weird, almost journal-ish fashion?
Brigid arrives at her ancestral lands only to be beaten within an inch of her life by the local coven of witches. Their leader, Sofia is determined to steal all of Brigid's powers.
In this delightful book, powers, whether witchy or Fae, are not always what they seem. Brigid has a magical friend, Mr. Mittens, who usually looks like a cat. But Mr. Mittens speaks to her telepathically and has some other storage behaviors.
Brigid's best friend, Meagan, cones to stay with her and ends up helping her start a supernatural bed and breakfast. Although Meagan is human, she fits right in and even falls in love with one of the Whelan family of werewolves.
Oops, did I say werewolves? Yes, and many other creatures become a part of the story. A story that speeds up like a road race that hits a fence at the end. What happens? I guess you'll have to read it to find out.
I read the first book, and was suitably intrigued enough to pick up book 2 to see what happened. However, I just didn’t connect with the book, and I think I’ll just call it her. While not badly written, this just isn’t the series for me 🤷🏻♀️.
Splintered Veil(Splintered Magic#2) by Jilleen Dolbeare is a well done book that I enjoyed. In this book Brigid has found some of her Fae magic but some is still missing. Her new boyfriend doesn't remember who she is and the witch coven still wants to take everything away from her. Her call for help has brought her human best friend, but she doesn't have any magic. To get her stolen magic back Brigid is going to have to master the magic she does have. Together with Mr Mittens, Megan, and the local werewolf pack, can Brigid defea the witches, save the boy and finish the house. When the confrontation occurs the worst thing you can imagine occurs.
I absolutely loved book 1, it had humor, excitement, budding romance, and all that you want in an adventure!! The characters are great, writing kept you wanting more. Book 2 is having me want book 3 like now! It’s better than book 1, only because the ending was a twist I did not see coming, great job!
Picks up right after book 1, a bruised, battered and badly injured Brigid awaiting her friend Megan, who BTW is an absolute Mensch! Well once she's gotten over the fact that magic exists and her best friend is a magical being! LOVED her reaction to Brigid's confession and her "introduction" to the magical Realm and creatures! She's so loyal and dives into danger knowingly, to help out her friend. I love the brewing romance between her and Luke. It's going to be really interesting, she's human, he's a Wolf Shifter! Love those combos.
Brad is still missing, the Wolves are still looking for him and Brigid is feeling totally helpless! Sure, she has magic but heck, she only just discovered she did and has no idea what she can and cannot do! All she does know is that she needs serious help and she gets it, just not as clear cut as she hoped. Oh boy was it tense! Her need to do something as opposed to her uncertainty really resonates as true and real. One scary situation after another and Brigid's desperation was something I felt in my very bones. I'm not embarrassed to say I had blood rushing through my veins at the rate of knots at times, especially during the battles with the Witches,.
I love the way Jill refreshes our minds on events from the previous book, nothing long and convoluted, just facts at appropriate times, all fitting in perfectly with the dialogue and the pictures Jill paints along the way, I feel like I'm admiring pieces of art. The world building is superb and I was quickly caught up, urging Brigid on, willing her to succeed. I was so ready to engulf Sofia in a magical shere and propel her into an abyss! The twists, oh my goodness, they were so unexpected! Especially the final chapter....yeah, sorry, no spoilers!
So not only do we have a gorgeous Ragdoll cat, ummm, sorry, Splinter cat... there's a griffin, a unicorn and a dragon! Oh and let's not forget, Wolves and Witches too! So many different types of creatures of which I'm certain there will be more! This series continues to surprise me, to engulf me in it's magic and it just gets better and better! But that ending! That ending leaves me yelling "no!" I guess I have no option other than to wait for the next book, much to my distress!
In the first book we learn of the witch's intent lead by Sofia. Her cousin who had been renovating Brigid's home found two of her artifacts and given them to Sofia. Brigid was able to retrieve one of them, but Sophia had held on to the diamond containing the ice magic. As this book opens, she is missing the magic of air, aether, reality, time and the ice which Sophia stole.
Gabe has been captured, and Brigid is recovering from the injuries sustained in the trap set by Sophia. Her best friend Megan is on her way to her support she desperately needs.
When she arrives, the relief of her presence brings Brigid to tears, but once they dissipate, she knows she has to convince Megan of the reality of magic. The pendant she prepared would help with that, but she has to infuse it with the ability to hear Mr. Mittens. In the meantime, Mr. Mittens has charmed Megan behaving like a normal housecat.
The first thing is to find Gabe, Brigid calls the clinic and finds he is there and after some consideration decides to go to his house after work. Gabe has been spelled not to remember her, but he's fighting it. Now Brigid needs higher help, she needs to contact her fae great grandfather, learn how to fix Gabe, and learn to use her magic.
The help she gets is in the form of a Kelpie named Dana. A stern taskmaster, but one that does help.
The plan to rescue Gabe is almost thwarted when both he and Megan, the wolf watching over him are encased in ice by Sofia, a true test of the Whelan's trust in her and her ability to control her magic.
There are many twists and turns in this one, and the ending is a bit of a cliffhanger, but also a very interesting one.
Man, this series is getting so good. As Brigid learns, so do we. It’s been such a whirlwind and a fun ride. And I know the adventure is only going to get better! Brigid has become a favorite character, and her bestie is AWESOME!!! I’m learning I really like the werewolves and I sure hope Gabe stays as amazing!
This series is Absolutely Amazing❗ The characters, the plot, the writing style... Phenomenal❗ These will be saved to savor again❗🌹 My compliments to the author who had indeed captured the very essence of Fantasy❗ Bravo❗ Can't wait for the last one to come❗ Thank you so much for such an amazing read and adventure❗ Andrea Hensley😸🏰🌙💜
I read it in two hours. Ms Dolbeare weaves such a tale I couldn't put it down. Now I can't sleep till I know what happens next. I am such a believer in the man is that comes from a wonderful story. What is next? What happens in the Fairy world.Enjoy!
This picks up just where book 1 left off. Brigid has bought her family’s old home, rediscoverd her childhood cat (yup, there may be magic involved there), and is building a new business. Oh yeah, and discovered she is part fae, has a ton of magical powers, and been savagely beaten by the local coven. There has never been a better time for her best friend Megan to arrive and help Brigid to explore all of these new parts in her life. They keep their friends close and their enemies closer. And there is a huge cliffhanger so I can’t wait for book 3!
What a fantastic book with some of the most fascinating characters ever. Mr. Mittens is a favorite, of course, but there are griffins, dragons, centaurs, stalwart human friends, a wolf pack and everything a MC needs to defeat the forces of evil.
I like that the romance is more in the background while the fantasy is more prominent. I like an older, more mature MC, I like an author who realizes not every reader wants a 20-year-old superhero as a MC. I like just about everything about this book and highly recommend it.
Wow, book 2 literally starts right up with little fanfare from zero to sixty in 10 pages. The witches have declared war and new allies form to repel them and seek revenge for their misdeeds. Brigid and her best friend Megan decide on a life they want to pursue but need to rid the town of the witches and take back her stolen magic. All is going well until Brigid does something no one saw coming. More please!
The excellent second book in the Splintered Magic series, Splintered Veil, continues Brigid's fight with Sophie to protect Gabe and to heal from the disastrous first battle. With her best friend Megan, more of her magical talents, and a new magical animal to back her up, Brigid can only hope to have greater success this time. I adore Megan and the animals as much as I love Brigid, Gabe, and the werewolves. This series is designed to be read in order.
LOVED this one! It's time for Brigid to get some training, some new allies, new magic, and meet new monsters! You can really see the story come together in this one. With new tricks they have to resolve and spells to break, it's easy to get sucked into Dolbeare's world!
Ends with a great cliffhanger setting you up to learn so much more about Brigid and her abilities in the next book. And some other hints as to what the future holds for Brigid and Megan.
Ugh! Cliffhanger ending. That said, it is fun going along for the ride as new magics are discovered and old ones explored. Oh, and the references to one of my all time favorite dragon series? It was like an unexpected meeting with royalty--lest I spoil any movie or book endings, I am thinking of Robin Hood Prince of Thieves and the unexpected visit by a certain royal character and actor.
Throughly enjoying this series. I would love to be owned by my own Mr Mittens. Watch out, you witch Brigid's circle is circle is getting bigger, and who knows what will happen next
She is recovering but determined. You meet her cool, friendly, excited, and protective bff. Missing/bewitched boyfriend. More cruel and devious plans from the B**** Witch 🧙♀️ .. and just when you think you know how it's going to end......I need the next one!!!
A fun continuation of the first book with the return of Brigid and the amusing Mr Mittens. We also have the introduction of some great new characters and tensions. A great romp for lovers of wild magic and talking cats.
Brigid has found most of her magic, but doesn't know how to use it. She is able to contact her great grandfather to have someone train her, so she can protect her friends against the witches.
Carries on from book one in a seem less fashion , strongly recommend reading book one first. I shall now try book three, hopefully as good as this one.
Battered and heartsore after the witch attack, Brigid has lost a piece of her magic and Gabe. The arrival of Megan, her best friend couldn't come at a better time. Brigid needs help with her magic if she is to face the witches again, so she makes a magical call to her fae-lord great-grandfather. Not a fan of being summoned, he still sends his best Kelpie instructor to train her. Now with Megan, Mr. Mittens, a griffin, a teenage dragon, and the local construction crew werewolf pack, can Brigid defeat the evil witches, save Gabe, and get her magical creatures B&B off the ground?
Oh boy. This series is killing me. The magic and mythical creatures are wonderful. The introduction of the fae lord and kelpie magic teacher was good. The encounters with the evil unicorn and soul spider were great. I enjoy the house restoration and B&B plans. It loses momentum whenever the witches take center stage. As the main villain, this shouldn't be the case. It's odd since I love witches. But nothing is interesting about these and I don't understand why Brigid doesn't end them. If she can't ask her grandfather for help. Brigid irritated me with her lack of thought in this book. She goes from being capable until she encounters witches, then her brain turns off. Why didn't she call for the fae and kelpie with the communication device they gave her when she found herself at the witch's mercy (again)? Why would she consider giving her magic away to an evil witch for anything or anyone? Big picture, Brigid. There's also Gabe's character. This book is a textbook example of how to make a character meaningless. Amnesia and absence. Even living in the same house, he served no role. Their attraction must be nonexistent since they never spent any time together. Why would he be a bargaining chip? He didn't matter. I would enjoy this series so much more if it was about her learning her history and magic, turning the house into a mythical destination and refuge without the witches' interference. I look forward to book three and hope we can leave the witches behind.
I think seeing Brigid pissed off just made me love her more! 🤣
Brigid’s magic is growing and her control is too. The only thing is, she’s still got a Witch of an enemy out there, determined to steal her teenage sweetheart, Gabe, and her family magic. And it’s becoming clear that this Witch will stop at nothing!
The good news is that Brigid’s best friend Megan, her protector Mr. Mittens, the local Werewolf pack, and some unique creatures on her estate, all have her back. An unexpected meeting with her Fae grandfather leads to her being tutored by a downright cranky Kelpie, who helps her to develop her control over her magic even more.
It couldn’t be better timed because the Witch is tired of Brigid’s powers escaping her grasp, so she’s quickly dragged into another fight-to-end-all-fights. With Gabe’s life - and her own - in the balance, Brigid uses all the power she has in her substantial arsenal. Only, it doesn’t end the fight but transports it - to a different realm entirely!
As a reader, the reality that Jilleen weaves into this urban fantasy world is fascinating. For starters, I loved that Brigid actually has to take time to heal and doesn’t look glamorous doing it. I also liked how this book was strongly driven by the plot, all the way over that giant cliffhanger, mind you 🤣 It only works well because Jilleen has done such a fantastic job fleshing out these characters so that we understand them thoroughly. It’s part of what I love about well written urban fantasy series.
I’ll be honest and say, I’m not a cliffhanger gal, but Jilleen gets away with it because she does it so well - and because I could jump straight into the next book! 🤗
The exciting and addictive fantasy continues! 5 stars overall, 5 stars story, 5 stars narration
This might be the best paranormal women’s fiction series that I’ve ever read, and it’s perfectly narrated in every way. The narrator Veronica Giguere is so amazing at male voices that I could have sworn it was a duet narration. Ms. Giguere is a true expert in every way, with a pleasing voice and excellence in action scenes and in moments of vulnerability.
This second book in the series continues the storyline and ends with a cliffhanger. Thankfully Book 3 is getting released this week in audio, and I can’t wait to start listening. The plot format of the series is like urban fantasy but with the newly divorced 42-year-old Brigid figuring out her new magic. So far the steam level is very mild with just kissing.
Brigid is relatable and lovable, and so is her cool telepathic cat. Brigid’s wonderful best friend gets added to the cast as well. The setting in small-town Oregon is nicely atmospheric. I love the magic, the action, and the intriguing minor characters. The world-building is really good. I totally recommend this book to all fans of paranormal women’s fiction, paranormal cozy mysteries, and urban fantasy.
I requested and received a free audio copy via the publisher, and I voluntarily wrote this honest review. #TheFlockVIPReviewTeam #NorthernLakeAudio
I really enjoyed this next book in this series. Despite having magic now, Brigid is far from a master at its use. She cannot control it well enough and this is a huge hindrance against the witches, who left her very badly beaten and bruised in the fight at the end of the previous book. She has no one else to turn to as the witches have kidnapped Gabe as well, so she calls the only other person she can trust, her best friend Megan.
Brigid still has some of her magic missing, but cannot yet find the artefacts, so she does the only thing she can think of - summon her great great grandfather, a fae Lord himself. He may help or he may kill her for summoning him, but she won't know until she tries.
Eventually with the help of Mr Mittens, her splinter cat, Brightfeather, both a griffin and a dragon taking sanctuary on her land and the local werewolf pack, she soon has plenty of allies to help. She also now has help with her magic, so her control is better, but she is strong enough yet to take on Sofia and her coven and get Gabe back before it is too late?
I really like Brigid - she is not your usual kick ass heroine. She struggles, she gets beaten but others stronger and better than she is, but she is one feisty, determined woman, who will do want she can to take back what is hers!
I can't wait to read the next book in this series now!
