The Scarecrow's Queen

Rate this book
Once, I was feared by all who gazed upon me. For centuries, I served, defending my crops in solitude and stillness, baring my scythe as an omen.

But when the crops die around me, I find myself standing over a field of shriveled stalks.

It is her fault.

The female who has taken over my fields. She might be the new queen of these lands, but in her wake, she brings only death.

So, I will scare her away. I will reclaim these fields, and she will learn to fear me!

Until one evening, she is attacked by no other than the Crow King. She cowers behind me for protection, begging him to spare her life.

Her terror and desperation stir me into action...

Nobody, not even a god, is allowed to frighten what is MINE.

i'm not going to lie, i started reading this because i saw on tik tok that the mmc is a scarecrow and sews a dick on for her— 🤭

but omg, the dedication of this man— i mean scarecrow 🥵😳🦋🦋

this was super fun, a tiny tiny tinyyy bit spooky (i should have read this around Halloween time!) and overall, a cute read. i loved the concept and dynamics. the dynamics at times had me 🤔🤔🤔 but it made sense in the end. the plot was also interesting! i’m glad it just wasn’t all smut. who would of thought i'd simp for a scarecrow, now i'm totally going to be looking at scarecrows differently now 😂 this would have been a 5 star read, but the ending was kinda rushed.

but if you love a monster romance with an actual plot, lots of smut, all the obsessive and possessive vibes, and one hot af but also cute and endearing scarecrow, you'll love this. hollow started out as a clueless scarecrow and he hasn't even kissed anyone before 😭 it had me 🥺

oh and he also reads her smutty cowboy romance novels to learn some stuff for her.....👀

This book was sooooo sweet to read. Even sweeter bc he sewed a cock on himself just for her.

Wrapping my arms around her, I would sew us together, if I could. I would thread her body upon mine so we’re never apart. “If I am only allowed to have one summer, then I am glad it was this one.”

“-What should I call you?
+Jack. Jack Hollow.”

“This place is important, especially to us locals. It’s both of our interest that this place sells to someone who will manage it better. ”

“Poor scarecrow. You have spent too long in this world. ”

“The land can grow anything you want. You just need to seed it. ”

“I don’t want you to be telling the truth. Living is easier when there’s a justification for everything, but after what you’ve shown me… I don’t know if I’m numb or just coming to terms. "

“You really did terrify me that night but… I forgive you. And you might not think you have a heart but I know you do. You don’t have to be human to have a heart”.

Gracias, guapa. Otra aventura nos espera.

Hola.

description

My face wrenches with the absurdity of it. The scarecrow is just that, a scarecrow. His eyes can't glow and his mouth can't twist.

Y Hollowstalk.

I pick up the cock and compress the large phallic shape against my once smooth groin. Nerves spark as my strings shift and my body claims the addition.

"If I am only allowed to have one summer, then I am glad it was this one."
Her hands grip my jacket. "Please don't say stuff like that."
"Why not? I'm a romantic."

Jack is attractive and not in the classical sense. Something is unnerving about his appearence that makes watching him fascinating. He's distracting with an appeal that puzzles me.

Delilah looks pretty, like the flowers in the garden. I never understood the colorful, pointless plants. They would be snipped and brought inside to decorate the tables and windowsills but were otherwise useless. Sometimes people would stop, bend down, and smell them. Their eyes would close and a smile would appear on their lips.
I touch my mouth. There is no smile on my lips, and I'm too far away to bend down and sniff her.

description

A scarecrow without a heart!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 🩵🖤❤️💚💜
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📙📘
World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌏
Character development: ☹️☺️😍😄
Narrator(s): 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration type: Dual Narration

The Hero: Hollowstalk (a.k.a. Jack) - he is a very old scarecrow god. He lives on a farm in the midwest that has a pact with the Crow King. The owner is always a woman (a queen) who has a blessing on her farm from the crows who make sure the soil stays fertile, but in return they want a portion of the crops each harvest to feed them through the winter. Hollowstalk keeps the crows from overrunning the farm during the summer.

The heroine: Delilah - she works at a private health club in California. She inherits the farm from her aunt. To get the most out of the sale of the farm, she needs to spend a few months at the farm fixing it up. Though she was never told about the pact and the paranormal aspect of her farm. She is a bit freaked out by the eerie scarecrow, that is tied up on a platform in the field of dead corn. She throws the scarecrow away, but when it shows up again, she brings it to town and throws it away.

The Story: Hollowstalk can sort of come to life, though he is still a scarecrow in many ways. After being tossed in the trash for a second time, he steals some clothes from a drunk hobo and shows up at the farm as Jack Hollow and asks Delilah for work on the farm. She agrees to let him plant the fields for her, while she works on making improvements to the house and farm.

This was a very strange paranormal romance, with an even stranger monster. Though I quite liked it. The intimate scenes are pretty steamy, which was even weirder since Hollowstalk did not have a very important appendage until halfway through the story. Though I must admit that I love the fact that he learned what to do in bed by reading one of Delilah’s cowboy romances. I have thought many times that if more men learned how to please a woman by reading romance, then there wouldn’t be nearly as many women faking the big O.

This was a kind of creepy story at times, I definitely got some vibes of a Supernatural episode I once saw where a scarecrow god came to life. Though in that one, he was killing people as part of a pact he had with the town to keep the land fertile. I did end up really enjoying this one, it was so original and unpredictable.

This audiobook was told in dual points of view via dual narration and was narrated by Addison Barnes and Tyler Darby. I liked both narrators, though they both sound a bit older than the characters were supposed to be. I liked Tyler Darby’s deep, gravelly voice which sounded great for Jack. Addison Barnes has a nice voice as well and the narration was terrific.

The book was sweet at times, but more often it unsettled me when it turned creepy. Something felt off about the main characters’ relationship—and I’m not even talking about the fact that the MMC was a scarecrow (I’m used to monster romances). What really bothered me was how Hollowstalk’s thought process changed completely after he sewed on a cock—suddenly he became permanently horny. By the end, the sex scenes just felt cringeworthy.

The plotline with the deal with the Crow King and the maze was the strongest part for me; I think I liked that moment the most.

And then there’s this, possibly the most ridiculous sentence I’ve ever read:
“I battle the urge to greet her, asking if she’d like me to have a cock so I might penetrate her.”

This book was quite strange and a slow burn, to say the least. It had short chapters and was very easy to get through, but it felt so rushed while also feeling like it was dragging on. The store would jump so far ahead that I had a lot of trouble trying to keep up with the month it was supposed to take place in. If im correct, this story it supposed to take place in mid summer till October, all in 276 pages. It wasn’t bad, I wish there were more details and a little more go the store, but it wasn't a bad read.

This was good, weird fun. Naomi Lucas is usually a miss for me - Minotaur Blooded was incredibly unpleasant, and the 1st book in this series was repetitive (DNF'd at 60%). But the plot/smut combo here worked really well.

I'm always looking for interesting, original takes on romance. Although the concept of a sexy scarecrow does initially seem off-putting, this tale does well as a short, standalone erotica with some interesting lore and concepts.

I just have to axe the star because it could have dug deeper and gotten a stronger emotional response from its romance with a more intensive lore background, but it opted to keep things a bit too short and simple, so it falls a little short of its potential.

Still an easy, engaging read. Finished it off in a single sitting.

Delilah and Jack/Hollowstalk were fine as characters, the dual POV style worked nicely, and I enjoyed the creepy rural vibes present in the narrative about a farm in the middle of nowhere besotted by old magic. The erotica scenes are well done, if not a bit... unrealistic in how little it takes for her to go from this strained relationship with him to being willing to pull down her pants for him. I think a little more reservation from her would have been warranted, frankly, though the more direct and blunt angle also has its own merits. Things wrap up nicely in the end with a happily ever after, so it feels satisfying despite not diving deeper into the magic, crow king, romantic development, etc.

All in all, the unique setting and monster love made it a worthwhile read. I'm considering reading more in the series for the chance to get another interesting spin on a monstrous entity that's not commonly seen in romance.

Oh, one criticism: the opening is misleading, as Delilah being attacked by crows doesn't unfold that way--when she's attacked, Hollowstalk has already changed how he feels about her and is off the pole, so she doesn't hide behind him and it isn't the event that changes his mind about her. I don't know why the author opted to write this opener when it's not even a true reflection of the story. Usually when a blockquote is added, it's taken directly from the story, not... just fabricated.

I'd recommend it to monster-lover fans interested in something short with a unique monster and decent erotic scenes.

O meglio, uno sviluppo maggiore a livello folkloristico.

This book had no business being this good—and I had no business enjoying it this much.

I picked it up on a whim after seeing some gorgeous fan art on Instagram, expecting nothing more than a quick distraction. What I got was a wildly entertaining, fast-paced, and incredibly spicy read with a storyline that felt fresh and totally addictive.

Yes, it could use another round of edits—there are some noticeable errors—but honestly? They didn’t pull me out of the story one bit. I flew through it. The vibe is perfect for fall—moody, a little eerie, with just the right amount of suspense to keep you flipping pages long past bedtime.

If you’re looking for a fun, spicy, slightly chaotic read to devour in a weekend, this one’s a blast. Zero expectations, maximum enjoyment.

I judged this book based on the cover…..

And now I think a fictional scarecrow is hot

Actually had plot (ish?). After like 60%, it was just smut. And then it wasn’t for a minute. And then it was again

Also the pole scene? Absolute insanity 11/10

Look, as far as monster romance books, this one has to be one of the most creatives in terms of anatomy and that won't be disputed 😆 a story with a scarecrow who sews on his own 🐓 gives to the term 'made with love' another meaning entirely.

There was a clear difference in terms of prose between the prologue and the rest of the book. While said prologue flowed beautifully, I found myself pausing a couple of times when I dived into the rest of the story due to the structure of some phrases that could've been written better.

I could be completely wrong, but the way that prologue was written was what this story needed, especially if the tone of said book was meant to be serious instead of humorous like some part of the marketing hinted at.

The romance was the star of the show for me, and I definitely liked both MCs better when they were together. I don't think Delilah and her brief interactions with her family and aunt were all that established for me to care. But, hey, the romance and her feelings towards the MMC managed to humanize her for me.

All in all, it was an entertaining book with some interesting concepts. However, the pace, feeble magic system and writing wasn't the best.

Uhm, what??

I waited two months for the library to deliver me… THIS?!?

Oh my god. This was… an experience. First of all, although this is DEFINITELY not a young adult, it sure is written and formatted like one. Heck, it sounds like a middle schooler wrote this sometimes.

Also, WHY ARE THEY HAVING SEX FOR LIKE, 50 PAGES STRAIGHT?!? They are literally ADDICTED TO SEX! No thank you! And that’s all the spice we get. And it is written BADLY… I want my spice spread out, not to take a 25% portion of the book and call it a day!

The idea of the plot seemed interesting. But it was just… bad. Badly done and executed. This would be much better if it was like, 350 pages rather than 200 something.

I really wanted to dnf this but I was 53% done with the book so I said screw it and finished it. WHY DOES THIS HAVE A FOUR ON GOODREADS?!? WHY?!?

I wasted my time.

Wow I really loved this! Such an original story with subtle hints of the wizard of oz, in a way. At first their connection felt a little awkward but improved over time. I enjoyed the story and the whole crow thing. I would love to see The Crow King get his own love interest. He seemed like such an interesting character, and even mentioned that the FMC made him curious about humans. This was super sweet and low stress! The heroine is pregnant in the epilogue, but it wasn't a major plot point so I didn't mind.
