Unwrapping You

Rate this book
Immense grief forced Aaliyah “Choc” Sanders to move from Louisiana to California. During that time, she rebuilt her life as a best selling author and found love, or so she’d thought. The closer it gets to the holidays, the more her life seems to fall apart. First there’s her workaholic fiancé that can’t seem to see that their love is dwindling. Then there’s her writing career that’s quickly becoming just as stale as her relationship, and lastly, a sudden bout of homesickness that she doesn’t quite understand.

After taking heed of some wise words and reaching a breaking point in her relationship, she packs her bags and heads back to the place she said she’d never return to, her hometown. There she finds that some things have changed while others have remained the same, like the feelings between her and her first love, and learns the true meaning of “Home is where the heart is.”

The beautifully written scenery, the southern cooking, and the dialect made me feel right at home. Choc is a successful author who was uninspired due to her grief. But after a long hiatus, she got her groove back. Her relationship was drama free, and I was glad to see a light hearted story that didn’t glorify drug dealing and violence.

A good first read

Wow! This was my first book by this author, and I have no significant complaints. Actually, I don't have any complaints. The story did not feel forced; it was friendly, drama free and the love part was evident. There were only friendly bantering and kind gestures. I thought Dr. Calvin was a world-class jerk and did not deserve to be in Choc's universe. Denny was the old flame who rekindled the spark and fanned their flames expertly. No extinguisher was needed. The storytelling was effortless, and I believed every word spoken. The author is one to watch in the future. 4.5 stars.

a full week to read this, that was my cue to DNF... I did not like Choc from the jump. We were supposed to believe that she was the bigger, more mature person between her and Calvin but she is a mess! After years with him, while they are engaged, she basically just leave Calvin a note saying peace out and two weeks later, she is about to move in with the Denim. And I mean, i get it she was fed up, but that just doesn't sit right me for some reason. And the way she spoke to Calvin and April, just disrespectful... The romance between her and Denim was okay ig.

Getting to the good parts

I loved this story of valuing one’s self. A story of finding real love. It addressed the grieving periods. The love of family and friends as a guide. EJ is hilarious. Denim is book bae for sure.

This story was so stinking cute! I really admired the main character Choc for how she walked away from the relationship she was in with Calvin because he wasn’t giving her what she needed and she wasn’t going to settle for less. And then when she returned to her hometown her old boo was there waiting for her with the same feelings and so much affection. Denim was so sweet to Choc. He was everything her other parter wasn’t. He cared about her and what she was passionate about. The forehead kisses. The overthinking after he didn’t kiss her after their first date. The spiciness and when she read Calvin when he came to see her! So many feels I read it in 2 days!

I love reading Author De'Andrea's books. They always make me feel like I'm in my neighborhood around close family and friends. This book, Wrapping You, was no difference. Very down-to-earth characters, good laughs, and always a few good messages in the mix. To me, this is one of those good, smooth-coasting reads, the kind that you can get lost in and easy to picture every action in your mind. I love how Choc and Denny reconnected, talked things through, and gradually got back to what was before. And that EJ kept me giggling... This was indeed a great read.

DeAndrea created a story of strong family bonds, and friendship reviewed love and also healing for a loss of a loved one. I love the scene of Choc and Denim's first date which is where this story really picked up.
