When night falls on civilization, Even the safest harbors are a gamble.
The crew of the Sparrow has spent months dodging bounty hunters seeking the fifty-million-dollar price on their heads. When tragedy strikes, the crew is forced to split, forcing Davey, Grace, and Yvonne into hiding with their allies on Venus. But shelter from one storm can land you in the middle of another.
When insurrectionists launch a coup against the benevolent Empire of Venus, Davey becomes the sole protector of a member of the Imperial Family on the run. Rebellion against the new regime simmers beneath the streets of the city, and long-kept secrets threaten what little trust remains in the empire’s failing systems.
But Davey Long is no longer the brash boy he was when he first joined the crew of the Sparrow. He’s learned a lot from Matthew Cole, one of the greatest men of that age. Whether that’s enough to withstand the coming storms is another matter entirely…
Michael F. Kane cut his teeth on science fiction and fantasy. In fact, his first memories of Star Wars are his mother covering his eyes during the rancor scene. Later, he fell in love with the classics, Tolkien, Asimov, Herbert, and more. Somehow, despite the odds being stacked against him, he grew up to be a somewhat respectable human being. By day he's the music director at a mid-sized church, but at night he dreams of unseen lands and places man has never trod. Check out his website to stay up to date on his publishing adventures.
With his mentor Matthew Cole unavailable, Davey Long steps out on faith and character to protect the Imperial Family of Discordia, Venus. Forming a ragtag army, he attacks and impedes the opposing democratic faction, only to escape to underground Venus where he hides out with a Moses mystery artifact. Along the way, his character develops into a strong, dynamic leader utilizing insight and guesswork to out fox the democratic usurpers. Rollicking good fun and family friendly. Highly recommended.
Scifi that reads like an action thriller! Featuring deep political intrigue between a benign emperor and a revolutionary democratic faction...set on cities floating in Venus' atmosphere. Then wait until you read about what Moses the AI built under Venus' surface. Strong character development, too. Very glad I found this series--they're so good I've read four in ten days.
The mastery with which Kane sustains and develops his characters keeps the reader in the grip of the story even when he turns his attention from his main protagonist and focuses on those previously less well-known. Absolute mastery of POV - this is how it’s done! On to #5 of the series, with great anticipation.
This may be my favorite in the series so far. I enjoyed Davey's character arc as he develops into the man he is supposed to be. The author has matured more as a writer, where the pacing and action flowed really well in this one. It did feel a bit more claustrophobic, with the majority of the story being set in an island city. Excited to continue on to the next one.
The best installment of this series so far! What an exciting ride through the political strife of the Venusian Imperialism as it meets with the crew of the Sparrow. Could not put this book down and can’t wait to read the next…Sanctum
"..for there to be civilization, men must tame themselves. They must be virtuous. If they are not, then they will only bring distruction. and the best way to do that is to use their strength in service to others. To give of themselves."
I'm going to start this review by saying this book didn't even really have my favorite character in it.
Now that that's out of the way. Oh. My. Goodness! Michael F. Kane, what are you doing to your characters?! You keep ratcheting up the intensity of your stories and my heart can't take much more of this! When I read, it's usually on the comfort of my couch late at night when there are no distractions. I kid you not, there were times where I was physically on the edge of my seat reading through sections. There were sections where tears streamed down my face. And folks, let me tell you, this book is NOT predictable. Just when you think things are going smooth and people are safe...they are cast into "Hell" and must survive.
All I can say is thank you! Thank you for another amazing book. I've been away from sci-fi for too long (over in fantasy for years now). Thank you for rekindling my love for sci-fi. Folks, if you are hesitating to read this far into the series, stop it.
My only complaint is that I started this series before he finished writing it and now I have to wait for the next books...and the movies.
