The Line in the Fire

One breath, one touch, and I knew… he would be the death of me.

To my sisters, I’m Cammy. To the rest of the world, I’m Cameron Hale, a gunslinger born into a legacy of blood and secrets. People know my name. They know my title. But if anyone ever learns the truth about me and my misfiring magic, everyone I care about will be in danger.

Except someone already knows. Declan. The monster who murdered my mother.

After trailing him for months, sifting through the ashes left in his destructive wake, I’m finally close to catching him. So close I can taste the gunpowder in the air. And the last thing I need is a guy like Luke Kendrick crashing in and blowing my life wide open.

Luke might come off like a boy scout, but there’s a threat lurking under that easy smile. He’s chasing a vendetta of his own. He’s cocky and relentless. And the way he looks at me...

I don’t trust him.
I’m not sure I trust myself around him.

One touch is all it takes to know letting him into my world is a terrible idea. But when my mission goes sideways and I have no one else to turn to, teaming up with the one man who can ruin everything might just be my only hope.

Myka loves writing romantic fantasy about tortured characters with big hearts buried under their damage. She’s also awkward AF in real life.

She lives in the Rocky Mountains with her lumberjack-looking husband and their rowdy rescue dogs, loves quoting movies from the 80s and 90s, and she’s a total sucker for the rough-around-the-edges type.

When she isn’t tormenting her characters or dreaming up gut-wrenching plot twists, you can usually find her doing just about anything that gives her a reason to ignore her phone.

What an incredible debut novel! I was completely entranced with this book. Wonderfully layered story with complicated characters and FMC and MMC you just can't help but root for. Supporting characters are written so well I'm already dying for spinoffs but first I need to know more. Book 2 is definitely going on my TBR.

Loved this book, slow start but after a couple chapters, couldn't put it down!
~Light Spoilers~

Hardened female protagonist Cameron is out on a mission when she runs into Luke Kendrick. One handshake later, and let the oh-so-satisfying slow burn begin. Set against the backdrop of a dystopian future where the world "shifted," books are hard to come by and a seemingly few families rule the area with their private armies.

The Reason I gave it 4
My personal tastes don't love cliffhangers, even in series, but this one didn't feel cheap. Despite the cliffhanger, the story "The Line in the Fire" was telling had come full-circle. I felt like this book was complete, even though the events of the world were still ongoing.

Cameron's sisters, in the short time we see them, brought personality and banter that only siblings could bring. It was fun and brought me out of the tension and worry of the moment.

If Kit's words to Luke are foreshadowing, I am going to throw my tablet against the wall. I melted when he adjusted his movements to be slow and known. Luke didn't announce the change, and he didn't ask about it. He just did. Everything about Luke and Cameron is heartwarming and adorable. Myka did her job well, because I love to love them, but Kits words ring in my ears and I can't help but be worried for what Luke does next...

It was a slow start
I'm not always the biggest fan of a "hardened female protagonist." Stories like that tend to make an icy interior the only way a woman can survive in the world, and it can make the character feel stiff and flat.

Myka Bound took that trope and made it her own. Cameron quickly became a multidimensional character whose actions made sense, and as she opened herself up, the chemistry between her and Luke had me smiling. It all made sense.

I almost gave this 3 stars
By the end of the book, there were a few things I'd wished had been more fleshed out:

1. Cam's relationship with Kit
2. Luke's time in the military
3. The magic system of the world

These weren't dealbreakers as I'm patiently waiting for the next book and am angry I didn't find this book years later when I had more to read... and I don't think not knowing these things distracted from the story itself. But it would've been nice to have a little more definitiveness around these three important aspects of the story.

Overall, LOVED this book. I can't wait for the next one !

Favorite Line:
"You cannot throw me to the wolves, for they come when I call them."

The blurb drew me in to reading this story. The Great characters and original story kept me reading. I am impressed and I just want more. There is a cliff but, it is a series, so that is to be expected. I Loved It, just the same!!! No Spoilers! I found this storyline to be entirely original and amazing!.
