Her small body hangs from a dockside crane in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, scarred beyond all recognition. Local police close the case within days – just another death in Haiti's gang violence epidemic.
But to Girl Zero, something stands a vicious bite mark on the victim's left forearm.
Three years ago, Zero was imprisoned by 'The Engineer', a brilliant and twisted torturer of children. She barely escaped death on his iron altar, but bit his forearm in the process – a mark he swore to inflict on every child he killed.
Now he's begun.
But this is Haiti, crime capital of the world. A failed state. An ungoverned space. A land of black magic and death. The perfect place for the Engineer to build the bloodiest altar imaginable.
Zero means to sacrifice him on it – if she can survive that long…
Mike Grist is the British/American author of the Christopher Wren and Girl Zero thriller series.
For 11 years Mike lived in Tokyo, Japan, exploring and photographing the dark side of the city and the country: gangs, cults and abandoned places. Now he writes from London, UK, about ex-DELTA operator Christopher Wren - an anti-hero vigilante who brings brutal payback for dark crimes on an unprecedented scale.
Mike also writes science fiction and fantasy as Michael John Grist:
Nietzsche said it first - what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.* Zero personifies that sentiment. This is one action packed story about how Zero has taken adversity and turned it into pretty much superhuman strength. Calling her a "force to be reckoned with" doesn't even begin to explain the depth of her conviction, and what lengths she will go to in order to try to eliminate bits of evil from this world. You'll be rooting for her even when she is reckless and gets herself into impossible positions. Great story that will grab you and not let go until the very end. And at the end, you'll just be craving the next installment (although there is no cliffhanger). Highly recommended.
I did receive an ARC at no cost, but this is my honest opinion.
Girl Zero had been in over head until Christopher Wren snatched her away from the engineer and a life of horrific abuse at his hands. She had managed to sink her teeth into his arm before they both escaped Wren’s vicious attack to free her. Then after seeing the same mark on both of Gabriel’s daughters arms made by a girl in their school appearing on other children in Hiati she remembers the engineers words…. The chase is on with adrenaline fuelled horrific consequences to find this evil manipulator. Leaving her Angels behind she sets out to end this nightmare.
Wow! Edge of your seat, action packed, thriller!!!
Well, who needs sleep when Mike writes books like this?? I couldn't put it down, I was up most of the night because I had to know what happened, to whom and how, I mean just HOW?? Such a thrilling read, Mike's best Zero book, to date!!!
Don't miss this book, you will be sorry, you need this book in your life / hand / mind / memory - it will stay with you (The Vodou makes it so...).
Wow what a rollercoaster of a ride! This is the third book and by now we know Zero will sacrifice everything, including herself, to get stop more children suffering as she did. In Haiti there is no law that can take on the street gangs that rule everything but Zero will or die trying. Will she manage to take down The Engineer ? You have to read to find out
When she discovers bite marks on her 'new' daughters' arms Mona/Zero flashes back to the nightmare of Pleasure Island before she is 'rescued' by Wren - when she bites the arm of The Engineer... Fearing that he is still alive she tasks Rex to trace similar wounds and that leads her to Haiti...
A page-turner - I'm tempted to say 'whirlwind' read but that would be silly (despite the climax). The ending is inevitable and sets up the next book...
In this sequel, Girl Zero goes to Haiti in pursuit of the child abusers. The island has bad guys of all kinds PLUS Voodoo. So she needs to find a local connection to help her, but can she even trust him?
I didn't think it could better the first, but it did and still leaves you wanting more. I read it in one go and now only have an hour before my alarm for work goes off.
This is another great book in the series and I truly thought I was going to be able to leave Zero behind but along comes another book that I hadn't planned on reading. So the saga continues and people I am hooked!
Zero whose heart is way bigger than your head did all and almost sacrificed all for the children. I read this book in hours as I did Book 1. Scary to wait so long for Book 3 . . . but I will, it's an amazing series.
I did cry at the end . . . but she's stronger than me.
Non stop action, heartbreaking, fights, hope and maybe redemption. Zero is my favorite fictional character ever. I can't wait for the conclusion, what end these authors have planned for Mona?
Girl Zero had a home and family but the Pinocchios were still out there destroying lives. She faces her biggest target but in the end she is left alone.
My reading: five stars. This is a dark, twisted novel … definitely not for the faint hearted! I think, this novel ended up being better than the first! I don’t know how the author can write this material and not have nightmares every night.
Very good storyline action packed thriller. From trapping a Pinocchio girl zero finds she’s has been led into a trap herself. Gripping storey line keeps you on the edge of your seat.
This a true roller coaster ride full of superstition and revenge some sadness amidst happy. Wonderful story telling which leaves me ready for another ride.
