Adam White is many things, but a single dad was one that he never planned on becoming. He was twenty-three when the plan he had for his life crumbled at his feet. In the blink of an eye, he went from a flirtatious playboy just getting his new business up and off the ground, to a struggling father of a two-year-old boy that he never knew existed.

Still, he did it. Adam accomplished what he thought was impossible. And now, at the prime age of thirty-three, he doesn’t think that his life can get any better. His twelve-year-old son, Cooper, is his world, and his business, White Ice Training, is one of the most known hockey training facilities in Vancouver. But when he posts a job listing for a new hockey trainer, he gets a response that lights a flame inside of him that he never realized was burnt out. One that he refuses to go without again.

One terrible game was all it took for Scarlett Carter to lose everything. After a career-ending injury destroys her chances of ever playing professional hockey again, she finds herself lost in a mess of guilt-stricken “what-ifs” and broken dreams. Moving back home to Vancouver was never in the playbook, but neither was letting herself get tricked into taking a job working for a man who seems to want to stop at nothing to see her play the sport she loves again.

Scarlett wants to forget about the world that broke her, but the single dad refuses to let her move on. The more time she spends with Adam, the harder she’s finding it to resist him and the sly grins he seems to only give her. She can’t help but wonder why he cares so much about her. And more importantly, why can't she bring herself to make him leave her alone.

A charming single dad, hockey, second-chance romance story. I enjoyed the depiction of functional complex family dynamics.

‘In case you were wondering, my soul feels a lot better after seeing you.’

This is a standalone story, amongst the interconnected tales from Hannah Cowan.

I’ve only read the first 27 chapters as Hannah writes them.
But lawwwwd.

Adam and Scarlett are stealing my heart more and more each time. I don’t need the whole book to know this is infact a 5+ star read.

Yall aint ready🥹🫶🏼

UPDATE:

HANNAH YOU HAVE DONE IT ONCE AGAIN😭🥹
I adore you, I adore your characters and I cannot wait for your future books!

Adam and Scarlett are two characters that are easily likeable. I love them both. Add adorable Cooper into the mix and you have a book you won’t be able to put down!

Being able to see Adam’s character growth from the snippets of him in ‘Lucky Hit’ to ‘Vital Blindside’ was something we all needed. If you didn’t have a mini crush on him from book one, you’re lying.

“If i’m the sun, then you’re my warmth.”

Scarlett is a grumpy, former hockey player, Who’s now back home helping take care of her mother.

Adam, our ray of sunshine, single dad that will have you swooning so much, you’ll catch yourself grinning to the point of your cheeks starting to ache.

There’s nothing I love more than undeniable tension between two main characters and ouf, we certainly get that with Adam and Scarlett.
Adam falls first and hard, Scarlett is our grumpy red haired girl who doesn’t make her feelings easily known.

“It seems as though I would do anything you ask me to, Scarlett. Especially when that smile is my thank you.”

It’s safe to say that no kid in any other single parent romance will top Cooper. His personality was unique and that kid just knows how to pull on your heartstrings. He is a true little bundle of happiness and pure joy. Can we also just talk about how blunt this kid can be when talking. I cackled.

This was such a perfect read, being able to read chapters as hannah wrote them was such a tease because I had to wait for more as she wrote. But once they were all together in one ebook, omg. Swooned all over again.
This is a book I wish I could go back and read for the first time again!

One of my all time favorite hockey romances.

I feel like this book put me back together. I admired Adam’s big heart, I believe he had redemption arc from his playboy phase and he is indeed such an amazing dad. I also loved Beth. This girl was written well and her character redemption was amazing. These two grew to be amazing and Beth being supportive of Adam and Scarlett was spectacular. Gosh, Scarlett scared me at first but this girl wormed her way to my heart. We can’t forget about Cooper!! He was such a funny person and his banter with his father was top tier, include ones with Maddox. This story was filled with such amazing family moments that ultimately warmed me up. Read this for a reverse grumpy x sunshine, single father, and hockey theme!!

I'm obsessed with the single parent trope now, and I don't mind it a bit. This book was wonderful and so fun to read. I enjoyed every bit of it.

I loved the plot and the fact there wasn't any unnecessary drama going on. Adam and Scarlett are the cutest ever, and the age gap between them is so good, didn't mind it one a bit. As well as Cooper's support, that was so nice to see. The fact that his mom, Beth, was nice and wasn't those evil ones that makes you want to rip your hair out. I LOVED HOW ADAM WAS THE SUNSHINE AND SCARLET WAS THE GRUMPY ONE. That suited them so well, and Adam made me giggle and smile with his personality throughout this book a million times.

This book had many healthy relationships and we love to see it. Also, healthy co-parenting, thats a slay. I recommend it for those whom are interested in; ex-hockey player, age gap, single parent, grumpy female and sunshine male.

Forever trusting Yaz's book recommendations, go read it right now.

I saw a tik tok video about this one and decided to give it a try because I love the single parent plot but God this was awful. I have no idea why or how I made myself to finish it, I just know that I don’t want to read this author again. The characters are extremely juvenile, the story feels like is going nowhere, there is a lot of inner monologue and they repeat over and over … it’s just awful from beginning to end.

I knew that Adam would be my favorite male lead in the Swift-Hat trick series since I first him in Lucky Hit. I love my grumpy, rude, dark alpha males, but I will swoon like there’s no tomorrow over a totally sweet and soft male character.

Adam is the kindest person. Period. He’s a phenomenal father, an admirable employer, and he’s such a cheerleader—especially for grumpy red heads. Adam hasn’t dated since his son came into his life, but the minute he meets Scarlet, he knows that she’s the woman he wants. By helping her find a way to love the thing she thought she lost forever, he also helped her find a way to love him as well.

Scarlet has the weight of the world on her shoulders. Recovering from an injury, losing her career and dream, being a caregiver for her ailing mother—all things that would cause anyone to snap. But Adam swoops in like the Prince Charming she is and brings the light into her life, making her believe in the positive of things again, because he’s the whole sun… See what I did there?

I've loved everything that Hannah has written so far, and this is no different. Vital Blindside is a story of finding new love, learning to have balance in your life, and allowing yourself to be happy again after life deals you hand after crappy hand. The character profiles, the real-life struggles, the journey of overcoming them—Hannah painted it in such a beautiful way and gave you more characters to fall in love with. If you love single dad tropes, grumpy sunshine, matchmaking kids and a mix of both spice and swoon, read this book.

It’s always so sad to finish a series and Vital Blindside is the end of the Swift-Hatrick series. The fact I have been here since the series began on wattpad feels like such a whole circle moment because here we are, at the end (but I am excited for the second-gen!)

I’ve grown to anticipate that whenever Hannah releases a book, it’ll be one that has my heart in mush and leaves me reeling for me. Vital Blindside is no different. Hannah really said I’m going to finish this series with a bang and that was the single dad, reverse grumpy sunshine trope all in one. Can you hear me screaming? Because holy shit, I loved this book so much.

Adam and Scarlett’s relationship is to die for and even Cooper managed to crawl into my heart and I cannot wait to read his story.

Adam was so incredibly patient with Scarlett and he was there for her no matter what even if she didn’t want it. Scarlett, this girl is so strong and my heart aches for her when she talked about her mother and her journey. Together, they created one of the most amazing love journeys and I’m so sad to see them go.

I love them, this book and the entire series! Seeing the whole crew again was the burst of happiness that I needed.

Honestly, please just go read the book. It’s available both on kindle and paperback. You most certainly won’t regret it!

Adam and Scarlett + Cooper were super cute! This was a quick read, cinnamon roll mmc and a super grumpy hockey player fmc. V wholesome, feel good, palate cleanser of a book. I will admit I was a little bit bored with this one in comparison to the rest of the first and second gen books Ive read of hers.
HC writes fantastic found family- its one of my favorite parts of her books. The little moment we got of Noah + Tiny made my day- truly I love them with my whole heart.
If youre looking for a light and quick hockey book this is it.

cinnamon roll mmc

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ (4.5 stars)

I didn’t quite see the beginning of this book coming in terms of timeline, but once I settled in, I realized how perfectly it rounded off the series. Hannah Cowan really pulled everything together in a way that felt both satisfying and heartfelt.

Adam continues to be one of my favorite characters, he’s just so sweet and always wants to help everyone and everything. Scarlett, on the other hand, had such a tough time. She had to completely start over and while she resisted it so much at the beginning, by the end I just wanted to give her a hug and say, “GIRL, YOU DID IT.”

Beth really surprised me here. She was truly awful in the earlier books, but in this one? I’m actually proud of her. Huge growth. And then there’s Cooper, an absolute sweetheart. I loved him in his own book, and I love him just as much here in his younger years 🥹.

Overall, a strong and emotional conclusion to the series that left me feeling happy, proud and just a little bittersweet that it’s over.

I just finished it… and I can’t stop crying 😭
They’re a mixture of sad and happy years.
Sad because this series has ended and now I need to wait until 2023 for the next gen and happy/overjoyed because Adam and Scarlett got their happy ending!!!
This story was beautiful in the every sense of the world. Honestly the word beautiful isn’t enough to describe it… it was absolutely phenomenal.
I fell in love with Adam, he has such a huge heart and he’s an amazing dad to Cooper. I love their father/son relationship, they’re literally two peas in a pod!
I loved reading about Beth and her story… in the first two books I hated her and how she treated everyone. But in this final book you learn about the demons that she was battling. She is so incredibly strong and I’m so proud of her for doing what was best for herself and for Cooper. She is an amazing mum and I loved how supportive she is of Adam and Scarlett.
Scarlett is amazing, her red hair fits her perfectly as she is a fiery character!! I love how determined and strong willed she is. When she puts her mind to something she doesn’t give up and she keeps fighting. She was so strong for supporting her mum and do everything she could to help her, even when it took everything in her to admit that she needed help helping her mum as she couldn’t do it alone anymore.
Amelia is everything you’d ever want in a mum, and a grandma. I loved her relationship with Scarlett and how she pushed her to do what was best for her. She was basically Cupid for Scarlett and Adam!! I loved how she was with Cooper, sweetest grandma ever!! 🥹
This series was absolutely incredible!! If you love hockey romance that’s spicy, will make you laugh, swoon and cry then add this to your TBR right now!! 🤍

This might be my favorite one in the series so far! Single dad, age gap, grumpy heroine? CHECK.

Vital Blindside is Adam and Scarlett's story. If you read Lucky Hit/Blissful Hook, then you are well acquainted with Adam's character since him and the heros/heroines from those books were all in college. Well Adam is GROWN in Vital Blindside, like early/mid 30s. Back in college, one of his exes popped up and left a 2-year-old son (Cooper) with him that he didn't even know he had. Fast forward and the son is now 11 and Adam is the owner of one of the most successful hockey training facilities in Canada.

Meanwhile, Scarlett is a former women's hockey player, who decided to retire early both due to an injury and her mom's diagnosis of early onset Alzheimer's. Scarlett is grumpy and doesn't want anything to do with soccer. However, due to her mother' meddling ways, Scarlett ends up with an interview at Adam's facility to train one of their promising hockey teens. At first, Scarlett is thrown off by Adam's cheery personality and gusto for life. It's hilarious to see the two of them bicker because Adam does not let Scarlett's attitude get him down. They try to avoid their attraction to each other, but Adam sees something he wants and he is not about to let Scarlett go.

I absolutely adored this book. It was THE perfect single dad romance, with Adam and Cooper's relationship being so sweet! Watching Scarlett bond with both of them was endearing. They brought her out of her shell and showed her that she doesn't have to play hockey to still make a difference in the sport. Adam also showed her how to love without reservation, which is what both of them deserved.

It was fun to see the characters from the previous books all grown up with kids and careers of their own! I know the author is working on the second generation series so Cooper and his friends/cousins will be getting their love stories next. I can't wait!

TROPES: single dad; grumpy/sunshine (heroine is the grump); age gap (10+ years); hockey-related romance (heroine is former hockey star; hero is former hockey star/now owns hockey training facility); found family; slow-ish burn

TRIGGER WARNINGS: mental health representation (bipolar disorder) - not hero/heroine; loved one diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease

“You don’t feel cold, Scarlett. If I’m the sun, then you’re my warmth.”

My brain turned jellybean and my heart became a marshmellow. This book gave all the vibes, sprinkled with non-toxic, slow burn romance that had me screaming when the leads finally got together!

Hannah Cowan presented this story is such a realistic way. It was drama free and fun to read. I loved how it had a close touch to reality and everything felt like a warm spring movie. Scarlet's trauma, Adam and Cooper's relationship, Beth's presence in the story, all broke clichés and presented a stunning picture.

The writing was simple and enjoyable and because this is a Hannah Cowan book, the steam was high as always, although this time it was very toned down and more sweet than erotic. I absolutely loved every page of this book and can't wait for what comes next!

Thanks to the author for sending me an ARC in exchange for an honest review!

this grumpy/sunshine duo’s romance was a blast. adam is a single dad who has never dated ever since cooper came into his life. scarlett is back home after sustaining an injury that is career-ending and to take care of her mother. in this case, adam is the sunshine while scarlett is the grump. i love this reverse dynamic and there’s no doubt that they’ll fall in bed soon. and in love too. read this so quickly! definitely what i wanted to read after a long day.

*Important Note: This book is part of the Swift Hat Trick series so you must read the other books in order to properly understand this book.

*Potential Spoilers/ Spoilers from previous books in series might be mentioned!

This book centered on Adam and Scarlett as they worked together at Adam’s business and how inevitably they were bound to be together. The last we saw of Adam was at the very end of, “Blissful Hook”, when he announced to everyone that he found out he had a son. What a great way to end a story, but also leave me wanting answers, and more! Now in, “Vital Blindside”, it was a bit of a time jump where majority of the characters are now in their late twenties/ early thirties, and have their own children as well. Oakley, Ava, Tyler, Gracie, Braden, and Sierra appeared in this book so you get that “found family” trope as well since all the characters are very close with one another. Adam, a single dad was juggling his work responsibilities and being the absolute sweetest dad to his twelve year old son, Cooper. Meanwhile, Scarlett suffered an injury that ended her hockey career and was back at home taking care of her mom, but funny enough her mom managed to get her a job interview at White Ice Training, Adam’s business. The last thing Scarlett expected was working at the one place that reminded her of the sport she loved and had loss the career she worked hard for, but she ended up giving it a shot.

Now I can’t remember if I’ve read a reverse grumpy/sunshine book before, but I was definitely loving it in this story! Adam was all smiles, charm, and oozing with moments that had me giddy with the sweetest yet also hottest thing a man could say. Scarlett was the grumpy one in this book, and I loved it. Scarlett wasn’t one to be pushed around, and based off of her strong personality and independence, she held her ground. Although, when it came to Adam, Scarlett couldn’t figure how why this man was always so happy? Also how even the smallest touches had her burning up with wanting more from Adam?! Let’s just say that between Scarlett and Adam, the tension was deliciously good and worth the build up.

I found it interesting that both Scarlett and Adam shared the same feeling when it came to relationships. Both Scarlett and Adam didn’t necessarily go out looking for romance or getting close to others for fear of either losing someone or opening up to someone that would inevitably leave them. Although, with Adam I could understand his hesitation when it came to dating because, he was taking into consideration Cooper, but with Scarlett, she was just use to keeping her guard up and kept people at bay from getting to really know her. Throughout the story, I enjoyed seeing Adam show Scarlett just how much he liked her, and that it was ok for her to be open to love, to be able to be vulnerable with someone. Adam was an absolute sweetheart and was constantly showing his admiration for Scarlett through little acts either it was offering her coffee, words of praise, affection, and romantic gestures, the man did everything possible to show Scarlett just how much he was head over heels for her! Scarlett being the grumpy pants that she was, was a bit stubborn in trying to resist Adam, but come on Scary Spice (nickname Adam had for Scarlett haha) couldn’t deny the way Adam made her feel!

One of the many things I love about this book/ series is the found family aspect. In this story, we got to see the whole gang all together and their little kiddos hanging out. Seeing all the characters together was heart warming because, it reminded me of the very beginning, the first book that started the whole series and the beginning of all these lovable characters that I’ve grown to cherish. In addition, seeing the kids now in this book just reminds me that Hannah will eventually come out with more books but on the kids so I’m excited to see what she’ll come up with when it comes to the kids storylines! I felt like each of the characters from Oakley, Ava, Tyler, Gracie, Braden, Sierra, etc. all got enough time to show their personalities, make appearances that were greatly appreciated.

Now if I haven’t said it once, I’m going to say it again… ADAM WHITE IS SO SWEET AND AMAZING! Among other great qualities that Adam has, he had me smiling and swooning the whole time while I was reading with the amount of cute stuff he said to and about Scarlett. Adam has been a character whose story I’ve been most curious about, and even with him being shown in the other books, this time with his own story and perspective I got a chance to really get to know him and of course fall for him. Adam was the perfect sunshine from his dazzling smile, and despite his thinking he was rusty when it came to dating, AHEM sir had it going pretty good when it came to Scarlett.

Now for all the sunshine that Adam radiated, he also possessed an alpha male side when it came to Scarlett. When it came to Scarlett and Adam finally getting spicy, OMG ADAM WHITE WENT FULL ON ALPHA MALE/ DIRTY TALKER TO SCARLETT. The way that Hannah writes all her male characters always leaves me blushing and quite frankly wanting my own hockey man myself! Adam and Scarlett’s chemistry was great both emotionally and physically. While I enjoyed the spicy scenes, I also loved seeing the emotional connection that Scarlett and Adam had together. Adam was super supportive for Scarlett in all aspects from her mom’s bipolar disorder and everything. I was happy for Scarlett because, for the longest time it was always on her to work things out by herself, but with Adam she found it in herself to ask for help, and truly go after what she wanted… she wanted Adam.

This was such a fun ride, with Scarlett’s grumpy side yet finding the strength to overcome her obstacles and find love to Adam’s sunshine personality that made me laugh and swoon over the amount of wonderful things he said to Scarlett. This book was a great way to end the Swift Hat Trick series! As if the epilogue with Scarlett and Adam wasn’t amazing enough, the other epilogue with Cooper got me excited to see what will unfold with the seconds generation of all the kids having their own books! I’m so happy to have read Adam and Scarlett’s story, and yeah there were a lot of moments that made me happy, but for sure the ending/ epilogue was heartwarming, loving, and perfect.

Adam and Scarlett are my favorites. This was the one that I seriously wanted to read and fuck it was worth it. Adam is such a good dad, Cooper is such a sweet kid, and Scarlett is unapologetically herself. Even though this book hurt in a good way, it was sooooo good.

Adam's life over the past decade when he was thrown a huge curveball in the shape of his two year old son Cooper, from that moment on his life has been dedicated to his work and his son. Scarlett is a former professional Ice Hockey player and after a career-alterinf injury and her mum's health deteriorating she decides that her and hockey are done with, so when her mum lands her an interview at Adam's gym and he pleads her to work with a future hockey star, what happens when boundaries begin to break?

I'm so in love with Adam, he's the biggest sunshine and has so much love to give every single person in his life, even to Beth who didn't deserve it after the horrendous way she announced that Cooper existed and was his, but all he wanted was for Cooper to have his mum in his life. Though she wasn't as shining as Adam, Scarlett also had the biggest heart when it came to her mum and truly would've dropped everything for her despite the protests.

When all the pieces finally fell into place, everyone knew Adam and Scarlett were in love but those two wouldn't admit their feelings but Adam confessing to Ava and Ava crying, Cooper spying on that conversation and giving his blessing making his dad cry and me as the reader also ready to well up because it was all so cute. The whole book was just sweet, no drama or break ups and fall outs just reading two people who fell in love with each other and had their whole families supporting them throughout.

Three epilogues? Spoilt. I loved that Cooper had his own chapter, definitely need a book of his to see how his future pans out.

I'm so glad we got to see the whole family in this book, every couple from the rest of the series and their children it just made for a beautiful big family and will lead perfectly into the next generation, and you can see that the new generation are the basic reincarnation of their parents especially the hockey playing dads.

I absolutely loved this series by Hannah Cowan. It hit everything it needed too and was absolutely fantastic. I read every book in a week. This book specifically was so heartwarming and utter perfection. A story from a single father who always puts his kid first and finds someone who the kid is obsessed with. I love this book.... But I really love Hannah Cowan as an author, nothing that she has written made me not interested.
