**Spoilers**
I imagine if Verity, A Life made of Lava, and The Marriage Lie had a distant, estranged, and disgraced book cousin, then The Assistant would be it, and while I want so much to rant I find that I really can't be bothered.
This derivative, unengaging story tried so hard to manipulate the reader. Nothing felt real. Not Emery -who, apparently was the next best thing since snickers ice-cream- or Jessie - who was irrational and conceited, admittedly with good reason- or Charlotte - who was flatter than naan bread.
It started out well enough as we got to know Emery and Jessie (and this is where Mann's writing was at its most compelling), but unfortunately, she squandered what could have been a truly heartbreaking story and it all became prolonged, overly dramatic, and tbh, nonsensical. No mother who claims to love her kids would leave in that manner. Period.
For that matter, no husband is that perfect nor would a true friend ever agree to deceive your family regardless of the extenuating circumstances. All these elements were unrealistic and, to me, completely unlikely. In the same manner, the story was one solid and continuous flat-liner with an overload of foreshadowing (if you didn't see that twist then you must have slept through the preceding chapters). Seriously?!
MY REVIEW AND OTHERS: can also be found on my blog:
THE ASSISTANT: is a full length standalone romance novel by Marni Mann. Spoken in multiple POV's. This is a safe read.

That picture had been next to our bed since we got married, and it had moved with us to all the places we lived. The smile in that shot was nothing like the one I wore now. It had dulled. And I knew exactly when it’d happened.

"Executive assistant to an architect, in-home work environment."

"...were you ever going to tell me?"Overall, Marni Mann has always been one of my go-to authors. I love her commitment to her characters and the stories in which she creates. The Assistant will appeal to readers who enjoy a heartbreaking story of being present for the ones we love. I look forward to seeing what Ms. Mann creates next!

“I was doing everything I could to hide this, to stop it from controlling me. To stop it from winning.”
“None of us are what we used to be, Jesse. We’re all changing.”
