Dreadful pacing and abrupt changes from one scene to the next, out of the blue twists that have zero buildup, plenty of tropes I detest such as the sudden loss of memory and love triangle, and overall too rushed a resolution to all converging arcs, as if the author wanted to wrap everything up in this volume at any cost. And the cost was the plot quality: it's a poor ending for what the series promised.

A pity, because I'd been enjoying the originality of this setting and take on Beauty & Beast with the unique element that there are two Belles for one Beast prince, one commoner and one royal, and where the concept of true beauty is explored (albeit not as in-depth and seriously as I'd have wanted). I especially hated that they made Commoner Belle a special snowflake near the end with that last-minute revelation about her parentage; she didn't need it in the least, that's one element I dislike even in the original Madame de Villeneuve version, and would've preferred it be omitted here.

On the other hand, the ending to the witch's arc is on point, and is one aspect few retellings deal with when they include the enchantress. And the ending for Royal Belle, whilst open-ended, has potential for a sequel of sorts that could be a Sleeping Beauty retelling, with a most probable redemption arc for her (in some ways, she was more interesting than Commoner Belle, for me), and there's also potential for Lucas and Giselle to have their own story. I don't know if Kaori Yuki would be interested in writing such stories, but if she ever does, these would be fine ideas.

As La Medium’s la grand plan plays out, it’s the last shot for Original Belle to come through for Cyril, and vice-versa. But when true love gets one last twist of the knife (or kick in the chest), will Original Belle lose her chance for true happiness to Extra Tasty Crispy Belle?

So there actually was a plan for this series all along, it turns out, which I kind of appreciated. This managed to play the long game, inasmuch as the schemes of La Medium make absolutely perfect sense given her world view and what she’s aiming to achieve.

Now, the problem is that the execution heads to baloneypants territory, as a lot of dominoes need to line up just right for this to come off the way it does and the timing has the unerring precision of a Swiss (French?) watch at times. And that’s just the beginning.

Then you mix in the fact that this story just starts grabbing stuff out of the air in terms of story beats - make no mistake, this is one of those books where everybody is connected to somebody else somehow - and it gets a bit much. Here’s a prophecy we probably should have mentioned at some point and have a sigil why don’t you? That sort of thing. Oh, and, uh, time travel out of nowhere, just for good measure.

As a treatise on true beauty and the price people are willing to pay for maintaining their looks, it’s actually pretty strong. We get the usual ‘be loved for who you are’ and a reflection on how petty people can be, nothing wrong with that. I mean, for a second I thought it was going to incite the French Revolution, but sadly not.

There’s even a clear throughline that people’s superficial desires are at the heart of all the problems here, and the coda to the whole thing deliberately fixes at least one major mistake with practically every single version of Beauty & the Beast ever made, which I truly appreciated.

But it’s less a triumph than a wobble over the finish line. Now, no fault to the art, which is definitely off for the majority of the book, but the afterword makes very clear is the result of the mangaka collapsing and being taken to hospital for some time while this was being serialized. Overwork is a whole other topic, so I won’t be faulting her that.

It’s the everything else. The so-called hidden ones seem to be fae, but might also be Lovecraftian entities depending on what point in the story we’re at (or they’re two different groups and no differentiation is made). The fitting end to La Medium feels pretty rushed and Belle sort of whines her victory into existence, which is… a thing.

This does clear the deck for the denouement where Cyril acknowledges Belle, but then has to deal with Princess Belle, whose antics won’t be winning her a New Belle Peace Prize any time soon (cough). Cyril telling her off is great, although his coarser language is really jarring because it feels completely out of context for the tone. Probably the point, but it’s a bit too much.

The twists in this part of the story range from the dead obvious (especially if you’ve read the final Poirot novel) to pretty good. If you were wondering how the heck Cyril ever felt anything for this wheeled banshee, all is soundly revealed and does make sense while driving home the story’s themes one last time.

And for all that grousing, the denouement is satisfying and the shot that ends the story proper is really sweet in its way. Top it off with omake that made me laugh (the bird joke is absolutely inspired) and it certainly leaves a positive impression on the way out the door.

Overall, a good enough series that had lots of striking imagery and probably has a deeper folklore base than I realize, but I wish stood up better as a whole story on its own. It doesn’t help that it blends in a lot of different ideas in a not especially cohesive way - when Isolde’s true face is revealed, that sums up what I’m saying in a single plot point.

3.5 stars - no way I would round this up. It feels all style and a weird, nebulous substance that changes itself a lot. I do not in any way regret reading this, even if it is Kaori Yuki as hell, but, like many manga, it came out really strong and couldn’t hold itself together through the ending.

I went into the series with high expectations and Yuki-sama didn't disappoint.

On the other hand, I must admit Yuki-sama has better works, e.g. Count Cain, Alice in Murderland, Demon From Far Away Land and Angel Sanctuary, etc. I still enjoy this series and Yuki-sama's creativity and awesome artwork, but I don't think I can enjoy the messages of this story about beauty, ugliness, true love and kindness. I mean, when the main couple and most of the main characters are at least pretty to look at and hardly anyone is physically hideous, what is the point telling the readers "a kind heart and true love is more important than physical attractiveness?". This message feels a bit shallow.

Still, I really like the main villain, La Medium, she is always pretty to look at, and although I don't like her endgame all that much, she is still quite an interesting villain. On the other hand, La Medium is just one of the villains in Yuki-sama's long list of female villains who are obsessed with being young and beautiful forever (e.g. Olga from Alice in Murderland, and the Queen from the Grand Guignol Orchestra series).

As for the main couple, I like Beast and the choice he finally made, Belle doesn't impress me so much but she is an okay heroine I suppose (her relationship with her missing mother and their backstory is interesting enough). As for the other Belle (the princess), her main thing is get married to the Prince only which is just gross and boring.

Review for complete series

This might not be Kaori Yuki's best work, but it is likely my favourite by her. Beauty and the Beast is one of the most loved fairy tales and extremely popular for retellings - while I enjoy a range of them, including ones that don't add much of their own flavour to it, this particular retelling earns itself a big extra by being one of the most unique reimaginings I have come across.

Belle grows up severely abused by her father and is entirely convinced she is too ugly to even be seen by other people. The Beast may have been a beautiful prince but he much prefers his new beastly appearance. While they are still Beauty and the Beast respectively, it almost feels as though their roles have been reversed; Belle can't imagine anyone could love someone as hideous as herself while Beast is the one with more than one person desperately in love with him. Belle has her work cut out for her if she wants to come out on top among her rivals for the Beast's love.

In addition to the twisted roles, there are a lot of different fairy tale elements woven into this story and I am sure there are even more homages that I have missed. I don't believe it was specifically said to be set in France but it is clearly at the very least a French inspired setting which I appreciated. The magic system and curses (yes, plural) were interesting and it made for an over all really nice and unique retelling of this tale.

Although I do think this is really well done and would recommend it to lovers of fairy tales, Kaori Yuki and Beauty and the Beast alike, it does have some draw backs. I wonder whether it might have done better with an extra volume or two because, as interesting as the magic system and world was, it was a little under-explained. I've never fully gotten my head around The Hidden Ones, they remind me of faerie lore yet they are said to be gods - whatever they are, we never learn all that much about them and they become increasingly more important as the story progresses. The story also seemed a little confusing and jumpy at times.

Belle and Beast make a nice couple and it's easy to route for them - nevertheless, I felt that Belle's feelings came around a little too quickly. There didn't seem much of a transition, just a sudden realisation that she is very much in love - a smoother development would have benefitted this story a lot. The art was lovely but occasionally looked a little rushed. This is a Kaori Yuki work so it's definitely darker than others of its kind, yet I have to say that I did feel like things ended pretty well and more happily than most of her other works do. It's not quite as dark as the first volume or two may let on. In contrast to that, sometimes characters had extremely shocked expressions which I felt were a little exaggerated in light of what was happening in the plot.

It definitely has its drawbacks but I would nonetheless consider this a fantastic and unique Beauty and the Beast retelling that surpassed my expectations of it. I nearly didn't pick it up but I am glad that I did.

This manga series has the outline of a good story & has truly creative & interesting ideas to change up the typical Beauty & Beast formula and thus create a fun retelling, but at the end of the day, this manga series severely suffers from pacing. The pacing is far too quick and this series needed to be more than five volumes to flesh out the characters, their relationships with each other, the world building, and the plot. This all comes to a head in volume 5 aka the final volume where the author is just cramming everything in & trying to finish this story with the neatest bow that they can create. According to the end of Volume 4 & 5, in the author’s note, the author was going through some major health issues while writing this story. So it is perfectly understandable why this story suffered in its pacing and why they were determined to finish the story. I hope the author is doing well & that they are healing and recovering, and the author’s health is far more important than any story<3 But honestly if this story wasn’t so quick in its pacing, it would be a four-five star rating for sure:)

However, there were some troublesome elements outside the pacing issues that should be fixed/taken out in order to raise the score/rating even more: 1) Belle, the main character, and her supposed hideous looks. She is considered “hideous” by society because she has bright purple anime hair:/ Nos I understand that in a realistic historical medieval setting, yes Belle would be considered hideous & a witch for this quality. But because she’s in a manga version/anime version of this medieval setting, and she’s in a medium where it is far more common to see characters with all kinds of hair colors, it makes it hard for readers to believe that she supposed to be considered hideous and that she would see herself as hideous because of this fact. Now of course half of the reason why she thinks her hair & this herself as hideous is because of the physical and emotional abuse she suffered from her father. However the story and Belle’s character doesn’t lean or address that reason enough in my opinion. It focuses too much on “purple hair is ugly and therefore I’m ugly!” Speaking of the father, number 2) Belle’s mother, in her dying breath, despite knowing (yes she does know, she says this in the story) all the awful & despicable things that Belle’s father did to Belle, tells Belle to just forgive him:/ He didn’t mean to she says:/ No😑Just no to all that toxicity😑Just wrong & no thank you😑 What makes this moment even worse is the fact that the goal of Belle’s journey was to find her mom and rescue her. Not only does she die, but she dies while telling her daughter to forgive her abusive dad. And one of the big parts of Belle’s character development in this story is to try to heal and recover caused by her abusive father. Number 3) in the final volume, they did the whole typical last minute love interest loses his memory of the main girl trope:/ I get why it was done and why it had to be done but it wasn’t given enough time to flesh out. And because of lack of time, this plot point couldn’t give a proper impact on the reader. It just feels unnecessary. And finally number 4) the side plot involving the main villain of the story was so jam packed that it can be it’s own entire spin off/new manga series of the author really wanted toXD It was kinda connected to the main plot but it just felt so tone wise different from the story that it doesn’t feel like it belongs to this story. Again it should just be it’s own manga series and I would read it for sure cause it was good^^! It was very entertaining not gonna lieXD I liked if more the main plot with the heroesXD Lol so bad but it’s trueXD This element is just troublesome technically cause it didn’t feel connected to the main plot and it felt distant from it & the side villain plot should be feel connected to the main story in some way.

But overall, this could have been a great series of it had more volumes, better pacing, more time to flesh everything out and maybe a second writer/staff to help fix those troublesome elements I’ve mentioned. Those elements just need a second look, and with that second look, I can see these kind of problems being fixed:)

A beastly, yet beautiful retelling.

Can our favorite heroine Belle save the day, as what should be a joyous day for the country and a gruesome victory for La Mèdium. And will everyone really get what they want, or needed, out of their seeming triumph? A perilous battle ensues with devastating consequences and an ending that is very different than what anyone may think...

Somewhere in chapter 18, (out of 20,) the story felt much more rushed than the rest of the chapters, and the art lost its touch of elegance and seemed a tad basic, like a new (and I mean a new-to-the-craft,) artist joined the series.

I didn't feel the story was impacted too much by the change of art, especially as much by the sped-up pacing, but it did feel jarring and took me out of the world. I would like to note that the artist/author was having health issues according to the author notes, so I don't want to be too harsh about the abrupt changes in this volume. I am also very glad that they were able to finish the series.

With that out of the way, the entirety of this story was absolutely wonderful! It is one of best retellings I have read of a classic tale. The French words scattered throughout the dialogue was perfect and really set the mood for a fantastical romance, with a touch of horror. The characters "beastly"/other worldly forms match perfectly to their personalities, which the two cat maids pointed out comically in the ending skits of a volume.

The ending of this volume and the series was absolutely perfect and the meaning behind the ending was the true beauty in this series. Bravo!

As far as adaptations go, this one is pretty unique in terms of adapting the story of "Beauty and the Beast". This isn't your Disney story! I like the new characters, dynamics, and struggles introduced individually throughout the story. The art is beautiful, if confusing at times in what it is trying to convey. Some of the symbolism and nuances, however, such as La Medium's backstory and Cyril with his butterfly symbolism, went over my head, but that's on me reading too literally. Fortunately (as this is my second time reading), the fairy-ex-machina ending felt less contrived this time. Other parts still feel slightly contrived, but I can look past them. For what it's worth, this series is an enjoyable and quick read that puts a new spin on a tale as old as time.

A lot of the reviews here are criticizing the ending.
True, it was rushed beyond the realm of possibilities, but it kept the plot intrigue and twists intact.

It should be also noted as well, that the authoress was recovering from a life threatening condition by the time the fourth volume was released.

So do be kind with your reviews.
Another author would had prioritized their health first, but she went on and finished it.

Overall, I loved it for all it did and she delivered another twist to a fairy tale that only made it more rewarding by completing it.

4/5 (I gave the rest of the books 4.5/5)

I'm a sucker for a Beauty and the Beast retelling and this seemed to be the perfect amount of dark and romance for me. I found the MC to be mildly annoying, nothing overbearing though. The only real issue I had was the pacing in the final volume.

Volume 5's pacing was too fast and I was a little scared there wouldn't be enough pages to actually finish the story. I still really enjoyed this series though and would recommend it to any other manga enthusiast.

Beauty and the Beast Of Paradise Lost started so strong with a unique gothic retelling of Beauty and the Beast only as the story progresses the plot line becomes more rushed and unfinished.

I really wanted to enjoy reading this series as I found this series is so unique only the wedding scene was so rushed in volume five it felt flat and unromantic. I felt their was not much chemistry between Beast and Belle they don't feel like the main characters of the story. I am really supporting Giselle and Lucas though.

When the Princess Belle says the phrase in the last volume “finders keepers,” you already pieced together what was gonna happen in this book in terms the Beasts storyline…. Add one more element to the book that has apparently been there from the beginning but no talked about.

Anyway, I’m happy to be done with this series.

I wish this final installment would have been fleshed out more, perhaps splitting this into two more comprehensive volumes would have helped things flow better. While I enjoyed the different elements and the general outcome of the story, I would have liked it to feel a bit less like a mad dash to close up all the story arcs.

Overall review:
It was a good series. I liked how he reverted to being a Beast at the end because that’s what he felt was his true self.
The ending did feel a little abrupt, but it was okay.

Overall rating for the series is 3.5 ⭐️

I felt that the ending was a bit rushed. For me, none of the personalities of the characters really shone- certainly not the beast, who was one of my favourites from the beginning. Nevertheless, I’m glad that they had a happily ever after 👍

It took awhile to get this volume from the library so it was a bit since I read volume 4. The ending felt rushed. Hidden ones, blue gem, blue gem to red gem, a random water spirit....things that were brought in but not overly elaborated on and added to the rushed feeling.
