Explore the roots of Viking culture and traditions as you embark on a Norse mythology, mysticism, and magic journey. How did the universe come into being? Was it a creation of a God that shaped the cosmos in a matter of days? Or was it the slaying of a giant at the hands of three brothers that gave rise to everything we know? That last question might seem odd, but it forms the very foundation of one of the richest and most fascinating religions that flourished in Europe during the Early Middle Ages. Very different from monotheistic religions and prominent in the Scandinavian regions, Norse Paganism was a collection of customs, beliefs, and sagas that defined the Viking way of life – full of magic, mysticism, and an ever-expanding mythos. Today, however, you’d recognize the elements of Norse Paganism populating the fabric of pop culture – in historical TV shows, superhero movies, video games, and even novels – retelling the sagas of gods such as Odin, Thor, Loki, and more. But Norse Paganism packs more within its intricate layers of stories and cultural practices – it is a melting pot of high values, interwoven with nature and a true sense of freedom. A good enough insight and introduction into Norse mythology but as to actually practising as a modern day Norse Pagan including rituals and daily practise I felt this book fell very short. The illustrations were also very lacking I felt and were for me too cartoon like being sort of a cross between Asterix the Gaul art work and marvel comics. So really this is more of a who’s who in Norse mythology combined with a rune lore section plus an all too brief hint on modern Norse paganism. Having said that though it is a good addition to a Norse book collection. The book would also benefit greatly from a pronunciation guide aimed as it is at total beginners. Oh yeah with regard to the cover illustration someone should have mentioned Vikings did not wear horned helmets.
A beautifully illustrated guide to Norse mythology. The deities, creatures, myths, and runes were explained. It is easy to read and understand, and I learned quite a lot about Norse paganism. If you play Skyrim, you know what a draugr is.
Received as a gift from Hidden Gems, this book is a nice resource, not so much to be read from cover to cover, but more as reference. I enjoyed it very much and am glad to have it on hand.
