Ivey/Ivey/Zalaquett's ESSENTIALS OF INTENTIONAL COUNSELING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY IN A MULTICULTURAL WORLD, 4th EDITION, is your guide to counseling and psychotherapy in a stressed world. This reader-friendly text focuses on what you need to know to begin your journey to become an effective counselor or psychotherapist in a diverse world in dire need of well-prepared professionals. This edition retains the authors' microskills model, which revolutionized modern understanding of the counseling and therapy process by teaching vital interviewing skills step-by-step. This process breaks down counseling into manageable micro units and builds a bridge between theoretical understanding, learning the skills, and the practice of counseling. This edition includes a chapter on crisis counseling and effective information on relevant issues such as the pandemic, social inequities and eco-anxiety. The book includes video content, session transcripts and brief summaries of key theories.
Am I rating one of my textbooks? Yes. Am I copying Ella? Also yes. Was it a good textbook? I would say one of the better ones. Would I choose to read this for fun? No prob not. Will I keep said textbook for future reference? Certainly.
3.5 star rating, but I would say if we were categorizing and rating in comparison to other textbooks I would give 5 stars
*To be clear this was a textbook for class, I did not read every page but the chapters assigned.
This was frankly a pretty pleasant surprise. Not only did I find here a rich diversity of content, with some literary quotes and compassionate passages (the kind that are oft lacking in more scientific texts) but it really was quite applicable. I'm perhaps a bit biased as the course I was taking (Communication and Counselling Skills) was one of the first that I took in my undergrad that felt actually applicable to the work I wanted to do. I really liked the way this textbook approached things in bite-sized pieces (not the usual deluge of fact and reference that is the textbook style) and generally resonated with its practices and principles.
But it is a fascinating thing to try to teach empathetic listening.. what a curious class for those who seemed to try and "learn" and "study" the ways of compassionate care. Ahh well.
One of the very rare occasions when I might have preferred to have a paper copy versus the ole expiring e-book (which is usually the same price... ahh modern education).
So, if you find this one assigned, be not discouraged.
Excellent introductory information for building practical clinical skills for counselling with individuals. Highly recommend practising the skills discussed in the text.
