These cheer moms are not content to sit on the sidelines.
Abby Winters is not your typical cheer mom. She doesn't have time to micromanage her daughter's competitive cheer group. She's got her business, Scoops Ice Cream Shop, to run.
But when a rival team's coach turns up dead and all signs point to murder, Abby wants to make sure her daughter is safe.
Can she catch the killer before they strike again or is the culprit going to murder the competition?
As a child, L.C. thought she would either be a truck driver (thanks to Jerry Reed in Smokey and the Bandit) or work at Taco Bell (her favorite restaurant as a child). As she grew older, she realized her talents lay in other areas, and for the last several years has been a college professor teaching business and English.
Through all her career choices, she has continued to have a passion for writing stemming from childhood, where, as an only child, she developed a vivid imagination.
She is proud of her vast experiences in life from barrel racing, to being on the dance team for a semi-pro basketball team, to being a mom of 2 amazing kids.
She decided to follow her dream as an author in 2009 and has worked her way up to having 5 fans (maybe 6 now). She often tells her family and friends that no one is safe from his or her ventures slipping into her books. She lives in Indiana with her husband, kids and two very spoiled dogs.
L.C. previously published her cozy mysteries under Laina Turner.
This was a fun short read filled with mystery that I certainly didn't figure out until the end.
I live in Texas, and cheer is a big thing here, including the moms that might go a little crazy with all that is involved. I definitely saw that to a minor degree in this book. I was actually more fascinated with Abby's ice cream shop, The Scoop, and the various ice cream flavors she created. I hope to see more of that in future books.
While Abby doesn't intentionally set out to solve the murder of a cheer coach, she does manage to ferret out information from the other moms, and it isn't until one final clue is revealed near the end do all of the pieces fall into place.
There is even a potential budding relationship between Abby and Detective Barrett, if not romantically, then definitely a friendship. Future books will reveal all.
I am looking forward to future installments in this new series, and we give it 4 paws up.
Abby Winters’ daughter Ashley is on a cheer team and unlike some other cheer moms, Abby had only been attending the competition meets and very few practices. That is until a coach from a rival team is murdered. Now Abby is attending every practice, even a practice of the team that lost their coach. With a killer on the loose, she wants to be sure Ashley, her friends, and all the other girls are safe. So maybe by sitting with the other moms, listening carefully, and asking the right questions she may able to get a line on the killer before anyone else ends up dead.
This is a very fast read at just over 100 pages. Ms. Turner sets the scenes well and gives readers an insight into the world of competitive cheerleading. While it is not a big sport around here I have seen the movie Bring It On more than once and the reality show Cheer, so I know the girls work hard and the competition is fierce. I also know the moms can get crazy. I love that Ms. Turner has used it for the theme of this series.
Her characters seem very realistic too, Abby is a great mom juggling her business, an ice cream shop, and trying to be there for everything her daughter needs. Ashley is a typical teenager involved in a sport that takes a lot of dedication. They have s strong bond. Detective Barrett is in charge of the case. He also loves ice cream and appears to be sweet on Abby. These main characters were pretty well developed for the first book in a new series and for the length of this book. I am intrigued to get to know them better.
The supporting characters didn’t have as much depth but I hope they evolve more over the course of the series.
I believe the novella length also forced the mystery to be wrapped up pretty quickly but it was a satisfying end. Abby was very determined and I liked that.
Rivalry Gone Wrong has me cheering for this series. The characters have my attention and I am excited to see what the author has in store for them next.
imagine you’re a mum of a cheerleader. you turn up to practice with your daughter one day, only to find out that your rival team’s coach has been murdered… would you be able to stay away from the investigation? even when police officers warn you off? when it begins to damage your friendships? but you’re daughter could be in danger…. right? Abby can’t resist… but would you be able to? ⠀ ⠀ at 103 pages, this was a short but jam packed thriller novella, that kept you guessing and connected to the characters the entire time. ⠀ ⠀ i loved the side plot of Abby running an ice cream shop, and also her little romance/flirting with the police officer… ⠀ ⠀ if you’re looking for something similar to a good girls guide to murder (i know, we’re all very sad to have finished that series), i’d recommend this novella!!
Read and reviewed for ZooLoos Book TOURS and L.C. Turner.
Publication date 10th January 2023. HAPPY PUBLICATION DAY LAINA!!
This is the first book I have read by this author. It is also the first book in the 'Cheer Moms Mysteries' series.
I was originally drawn to this book by its intriguing sounding synopsis and title.
This novel consists of a 20 chapters. The chapters are short to medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
This book is based in the fictional town of Kindville, USA 🇺🇸.
This book is written in first person perspective with the main protagonist being Abby Winters. The benefits of books written in first person perspective are as long as they are well written it makes you feel that you are being spoken to by the protagonist and it can create more of a bond between yourselves and them. If there are several protagonists you also get to see more of what is going on.
This book is a very fast paced, fun and page turning read. It is an absolutely fantastic start to what is promising to be an addictive series and I'm looking forward to getting stuck in to the next 4 books in the series which are called 'Even The Score', 'Silence The Cheers', 'Cheerleading Is Killer' and 'It's About The Hit'. The storyline is unique and intriguing and also scarily believable and realistic as I've watched a few programmes on how competitive sports such as Cheerleading and modelling can be!! It is filled with murder, romance, family, cheerleading and ice cream!! I love the fact that Abby owns an ice cream shop which adds to the fun as you get to see her making different flavours. It is always worrying when starting a new series as you have no idea who the characters are. It is very important for me to bond with not only the lead protagonists but also any characters that may make repeat appearances during the series too. However, this wasn't a problem with this book and I enjoyed getting to know who everyone was. They were all strong and realistic and I really liked Abby and am looking forward to meeting her again. I enjoyed seeing her friendship develop with Detective Barrett and am looking forward to seeing if it turns into more. I found him down to Earth, friendly and interesting so fingers crossed Abby finally finds some happiness with him. I was shocked when I found out who the killer was as I was not expecting that at all. Its always nice to be surprised in a crime book so well done L.C Turner as I have read so many crime books it is getting harder and harder to surprise me!!
An absolutely fantastic start to what promises to be an addictive series!!
Well done L.C Turner on a fantastic, page turning read. Here's to your next success 🥂
Overall a fast paced, quick, fun page turning cosy mystery that will leave you wanting more.

When it comes to reading, my usual fare is a good dose of Murder, Death, Kill. However, I thought I would have a bit of a change of pace with Rivalry Gone Wrong, which slowed the gears down to Murder, cheerleading, ice cream.
Yep, this is me diving headlong into the waters of the cozy mystery world.
I have to say, I did not know what to expect, but as far as it goes, I quite enjoyed dipping my toe into this world of coziness, cheerleading and murder.
As you can guess, the story revolves around the cut throat world of competitive cheerleading in small town USA. During one of these cheerleading competitions, one of the coaches is killed, which the police discover was not an accident. Worried about the safety of her daughter and the other girls in the team, cheerleading mom Abby Winters literally helps the police with their enquiries by taking it upon herself to investigate the murder and bring the culprit to justice.
Like I said, I quite liked this book with its veneer of Hallmark pleasantness. It does have that Jessica Fletcher/Father Brown feel to it and I quite enjoyed the warmth and the wit of the story that LC Turner builds with her ice cream mom detective. I must say that I was a little surprised by the speed of the denouement of the story and it took me a little bit aback at how quickly it played out
Added to that, the characters of the story were all quite likeable and believable, there's a little bit of romance chucked in which moves the story along nicely.
All in all, for a reader that generally likes his books swathed in blood, dragons and war, this was a pleasant change of pace
This is the first book in the series and what a way to kick a series off! This is a short story (103pages) so it is great little read.
Even though it is a short story it certainly packs a lot in to it. The characters featured in the book all add something to the storyline, they all add great depth and they are great to get to know . It is a great cozy mystery book, the storyline flows nicely throughout and doesn't lead you off on unnecessary tangents .
Abby the main character is easy to connect too and she makes you want to read on, I hope that in the rest of the series we will learn more about her, and her romance !
Abby Winters is a busy woman, running her Scoops Ice Cream Shop and supporting her daughter’s activities in a competitive cheerleading group. But when the rival Kindville Cougars coach ended up shot, murdered on the side of the road a few miles away, Abby stuck around to get more information and to make sure her daughter stayed safe as they continued with their 3-hour practice. When did a competitive sport turn lethal? Who would have murdered Coach Brian and why? Can they use the cheerleader’s pink/purple/blue practice bow found at the scene of the crime to track down the killer? Or is it a dead end since each player is given several of them until they earn their own team bow? Will Abby be able to assist Detective Barrett, who turns out to be an ice cream customer of hers! Another coach has already asked her to meet him at a bar so they could talk privately. Will she get information to help figure out the murder?
We certainly learn a great deal about competitive cheerleading. I had never heard of it before, just assuming the teams had their cheerleaders, not knowing the cheerleading itself had become a sport. I did enjoy the mystery, however, and am looking forward to the next book in this series.
I received an advance review copy for free and am leaving this review voluntarily. Thank you @lainaturnerauthor and @zooloosbooktours for my #giftedbook!
Rivalry Gone Wrong is a hilarious inside look at the world of competitive cheer and the life of a cheer mom. I was drawn to this book because I LOVED Dance mom the US reality series that began in 2008ish and all of their drama. This book reminded me of the series though this book was much more funny and entertaining.
The author does an excellent job bringing an entire cast of characters to life. I felt myself immediately sucked into the details and gossip. Who doesn't love gossip? I thoroughly enjoyed the main character's inquisitive nature and the eclectic cast of supporting characters. I enjoyed their chemistry while also suspecting them.
Fast paced and filled with twists you won't see coming, this book will keep you turning the pages to the end. I looked forward to reading more!
I loved this! Read it in one sitting. A cosy mystery about a cheerleader coach found dead. There’s a lot of speculation, a lot of finger pointing, and a lot of competing. This is such an easy read, exactly what I needed. It is a fantastic read, can’t wait for the other books to be released.
Rivalry Gone Wrong is the first book in A Cheer Mom Mystery series by L.C. Turner. It has lots of cheerleaders, competitions, practices, coaches, cheer moms, and murder too. It was a quick read, and I look forward to reading more.
One of the moms, Abby, decides to play amateur sleuth. She tells the detective and others it’s because she wants to ensure her daughter and teammates are safe but is that the real reason? She owns an ice cream shop and is continuously developing new flavors. It seems like the detective is her new guinea pig. Could there be more?
Abby seems to be one step ahead of everyone with her sleuthing in this cozy mystery. There are lots of clues to sift through, and we’re there every step of the way. A fast-paced read with lots of characters who we only scratch the surface of. The whodunnit was surprising, and of course, Abby was the one who solved it and handed the culprit directly to the detective. There was nice closure, and I look forward to seeing what the next mystery is and if Abby is the one who solves it again.
A cozy mystery, lots of clues, and a backdrop of cheerleading led me to a satisfying conclusion in Rivalry Gone Wrong.
Abby Winters is a widow, owns an ice cream shop and is raising a daughter, Beth, who is very involved in competitive cheerleading. This makes Abby a cheerleading mom, taking Abby to practices and competition with her team and she becomes a friend to the other cheer moms to help her when she wants information. One of the other competitive schools has won this particular competition five times in a row and Beth's team has always come in second. When the coach of the rival team is found murdered outside the competition venue and Beth's team wins, things start to go crazy. Abby feels she should investigate since she wants to make sure her daughter and the other's on Beth's team are safe. So begins Abby's sleuthing or snooping where she runs into the smooth, good-looking detective assigned to this case, Detective Barrett who seems to have taken a liking to Abby. The writing is smooth taking you for page to page to a surprise ending! I really like this series so far and am looking forward to reading more. I definitely like the characters. I received an ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.
I knew cheerleading was competitive stateside but who’d have thought it could be so deadly!! A team coach brutally murdered but why??!
Abby Winters takes a passing interest in her daughter’s cheerleading passion, playing taxi and turning up to the competitions. But when a rival team’s coach is battered to death, Abby can’t resist playing amateur detective. She thinks she’s being subtle but is she? Is she going to get the back up of the actual detective in charge of the case?
But this isn’t all about the murder. Oh no, there is ice cream. The ice cream flavours sound divine, the sort you’d be spoilt for choice in an artisan parlour! And then there is that hint of romance, the flirting over the aforementioned mouthwatering ice cream. Will single mum Abby get her man? I think that will bubble away as the series develops!
Rivalry Gone Wrong is a fun cosy crime that I can imagine this being a teen movie (think Bring It On but with murder). At just over 100 pages this is a short read but that said Turner packs a lot into those 100 odd pages. This is a great start to a series and I’m sure I’ll be reading more!
I found this book to be very fun and clever. It was set in the world of competitive cheer, which I know nothing about, but the author gives you all the details (and the gossip) you need to be a part of the cheer mum squad. From the start, this book was exciting and had a lot of detail, to really bring it to life. The main character is a part of the mix, full of inquisitive instinct and really keeps the mystery alive. She is fun and makes you connect with the story so easily. The author created the whole crew well and kept you guessing right the way through, would it really be a mum who took it too far, or someone on the outside looking in? The pace was excellent, as it moved along well and made the story really easy to read and become a part of. I liked the surprise elements and the extra connections that were made between characters. Honestly, I also just liked how great of a mum the main character was as well! Overall, this book has a great flow, excellent characters, a brilliant and fun storyline and is really just a cheery 😉 read. I highly recommend it- you won’t regret tumbling in to the story!
Cheerleading competitions turn nasty when one of the the coaches is murdered on his way to the venue and Beth's mum turns detective to help uncover the truth about what happened.
I thought it a little odd that a mum would just take it upon herself to dig for information and meet suspects alone - definitely something I'd shy away from....but maybe as the series moves on, we'll get into her character a bit more and discover her motives for this. Having said this, dig she did and she solved the mystery too.
I liked the plot of this one and the storyline was very plausible (sorry any cheer mums reading this). The characters were easy to relate to and I loved the little added romance beginning to show between Mum and the detective. It will be good to see how that develops throughout the series. The writing style was clear and consice and it was a great length for a quick afternoon read.
Rivalry gone wrong is a story about a cheer mom name Abby Winters. She is a widower with a preteen daughter, in competitive cheer. One of the competitions, a rival teams coach was found, murdered. Now the main character, Abbie takes it upon herself to snoop, and try to solve the case. There was a few twists and turns, but ultimately she solve the mystery of the murder. The book is truly enjoyable. I love how Abby is kind of just pushy in her way into conversations and ask people random questions. I love her supporting characters like the detective using ice cream as an excuse to see her. Cheerleading is hard and often times cutthroat, so it is a change of direction how the author use this premise of a story, and made it a light hearted book.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
A very easy read combining a cosy mystery, some delicious ice cream ideas (although I do wonder why so many amateur detectives are chefs) and a hint of romance. I can well imagine that the world of cheer leading is just as cut throat as skating and tennis and we know the lengths people will go to in those sports to win.
Abby is a great character, assertive, funny and independent without being aggressive and I look forward to seeing how she develops as the series continues and how her budding romance with Detective Barrett develops. I am also hoping to find out more about her daughter Ashley in future books.
This was a quick, fun read. Perfect for when you want some light relief or a quick break and I’m looking forward to reading more about Abby and her friends.
When the coach of one of the best cheerleading squads is found murdered, Abby Winters is determined to find out who did it, even if means stepping on the toes of Detective Anthony Barrett. Although personally I probably would have found Abby annoying in her nosiness if I was trying to solve a murder, I did find her quite entertaining, especially when she tries to infiltrate an opposing group of cheerleader moms. But the fact that she owns an ice cream shop endeared her to me, plus the flavours she invents, I want some! This book is a relatively short and easy read and I am looking forward to the sequel as I want to know what trouble she can find herself in and of course, what’s going to happen between Abby and the handsome detective.
When cheerleading is a competitive sport stakes are high and even something to kill for.
This is a novella that wraps up nicely; you will expect everyone but the author gives you several twists you won't see coming.
As this was a novella the minor characters only had small parts but you still had a sense of the 'gossiping mums', and Turner gives you an in-depth character of Abby and although a snippet into her personal life this doesn't take away from the main narrative.
There is a sneaky little romance added which every reader will be delighted about and will have anyone excited about a sequel
A quick read cozy mystery that still managed to have a few twists and turns. Very well written and actually kind of believable - competitive cheerleading can be cutthroat - I was kept guessing till nearly the end.
I enjoyed the author's writing style, to the point but still descriptive, with dialogue moving the plot along. Abby was a great sleuth, not too pushy or arrogant and her little clean flirtation with Detective Barrett added to the story.
Great characters, interesting concept and engaging mystery. My first by the author, but it won't be my last.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The first book in the Cheer Mom Mystery series, Rivalry Gone Wrong, introduces us to Abby Winters, single mom to Ashley who is highly involved in competitive cheer. When murder happens a little too close to home, Abby, who also owns an ice cream shop called Scoops, decides to do her own investigating. I really like Abby and her relationship with her daughter and I can't wait to see how a potential romance develops between Ashley and the cute, ice cream loving detective. I highly recommend this cozy and I'm looking forward to the next in the series. Happy Reading!

competitions are tough. There are always moms who take it to heart. The threat of someone stealing a routine was the least of the worries. A cheer mom job calls for dedication, but some take it to the extreme. Anyone with a child in sports can relate. Ms Turner embraces the mixed personalities of the sport parent. This book brought back memories from when my children were in cheer. Add a murder in that and you have a nail biting who dunnit.
Competitiveness can lead to murder - but did you really expect it in the world of competitive cheering? Alas the author leads us into the crazy world of competitive sports when a successful cheer coach is murdered. Who could do such a thing to a coach? Read this cute and cozy novella to find out. Add in just a smidgen of romance to come involving a cheer mom and I'm sure you will enoy this quick read.
I received an advance copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving my review.
A quick, easy and short read that kept me gripped all the way through. I really liked the character development and found the characters to be believable and relatable. I loved the budding relationship between Detective Barrett and Abby. I have watched a couple of reality shows where the mums are often just as competitive as the coaches and athletes - if not more so, and so I love that the book focused on this. This is my first read by this author but it won't be my last
A cosy mystery novella set in the world of a small town competitive cheer team. I really liked the main character, Abby, and I can't wait to see how her relationship with Detective Barrett progresses. This was a page turner, I kept changing my mind on who I thought was guilty. Who knew cheerleading was so cut-throat! I'm intrigued to see where the series goes next!
A story about the murder of a competitive cheerleading coach, I had never read anything like it! And I loved it! As a novella, it’s a fast read, but well-developed and very entertaining. I can tell the author knows this cheer world well and it shows. And can I please taste some of that ice cream? LOL!
When the coach of a rival cheer team is murdered, Abby is determined to help a certain police detective solve the case. This fun little mystery has plenty of suspects & red herrings to keep you busy solving the case along with Abby. I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next in the series. I received a complimentary copy of this book and chose to write a voluntary, unbiased review.
Rivalry Gone Wrong by L.C. Turner. Abby Winters is not your typical cheer mom. She doesn't have time to micromanage her daughter's competitive cheer group. She's got her business, Scoops Ice Cream Shop, to run. I did enjoy this book. Read in one sitting. I liked Abby and Benson. I'm looking forward to the next book. 5*.
Wow - great story. A great cozy mystery along with an eye opener about the world of cheering. A fun read as Mom gets involved in the murder investigation and tries to keep everyone safe. Could any of the other moms be guilty? You'll enjoy this book!
I reviewed this book as part of an advance reader team and am providing my honest opinion.
This is the first in a series. Competitive cheerleading is a deadly sport, but Abby never thought it would really involve murder. Abby is a cheer mom and owner of the local ice cream shop. This novella leads the reader into the competitive cheer world and provides murder and a little romance. I enjoyed the read and look forward to another.
