Jenitha feels that at thirty-seven, life is passing her by. All she wants is a husband and when she is introduced to Thomas, a handsome Dane, she dares to hope that she's found him.
After enjoying Maureen's first novel I was really looking forward to this. It was about a librarian, living in the same part of London as I was so thought it would be fascinating. Unfortunately it was rather dire. First of all there is no mystery to it at all. A man shows up whose wife is missing, the police suspect him, then don't. There's no crime but it obvious from the start that he did away with her, even though there isn't a "crime" that's being investigated. Second the main character was terribly disappointing. In the first novel, the main character was an actress who was multi-dimensional and delusional but in a good way. This woman was pathetic. Her whole realisation was that she "needed a husband". So she fell (for no obvious reason) with the first single guy she came across. There was no background characterisation to her at all, (besides loosing her parents young, but that was simply to introduce the aunt character). We never got to see her doing her job, or anything about it, she was put on long term medical leave very quickly after the novel started, the only thing she did was go for a coffee across the road. Which considering how much the actress did was quite disappointing. The book got even more bizarre with a private wedding and the new husband insisting they go and visit his family in Norway. Where everything was very messed up but in a terribly boring way. I'm afraid I can't really recommend this one, and won't bother reading any more of her books.
