I received a free copy of, A Secret Cornish Summer, by Phillipa Ashley, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Most of the characters in this book had secrets, some lied about everything. Eden has finally moved on from her two timing ex Simon, until he turns up in Cornwall looking for her. Eden's grandmother Iris is turning 90, so exciting. I enjoyed this book, the characters are great except for Simon, I loved Eden, Morwenna, Courtney, Dion, and Levan.
Having read a number of this authors other books I was delighted to receive an ARC of this novel and looked forward to reading it but I'm sad to say I was disappointed.
I understand that Eden was scarred by her past and has major trust issues but I can't understand what her major issue was when Levan reveals his secret - he didn't lie about it, just left it until Eden was able to know him well enough to open up. The reaction seemed OTT and I couldn't get behind the motivation.
I also struggled with the constant reinforcement of what characters were feeling, rather than interpreting it from their actions and words - it felt like we were being walked through emotions rather than empathising them.
The unique setting of a Cornish lighthouse makes for a perfect summer read. Centring on 3 generations of women - Iris, the grandmother, Sally, the mother and Eden, the daughter - there are lots of family secrets Took me a while to get into the story of Eden and Levan, but you ended up hoping they will stay together. Also loved the fab loveable character of Iris and her controversial storyline A well written book with lots to keep you engaged Thanks @phillipa.ashleyauthor, @avonbooksuk & @netgalley for the eARC
Another really enjoyable light read from Phillipa Ashley. I just seem to devour her books once I start reading them because they are so easy to get into and to read.
Most of the characters had secrets that they didn't want the others to find out, or were afraid of revealing. That was the crux of the story. Eden had broken up with her cheating and lying ex, Simon, and moved home to be with her mother and grandmother in Cornwall. Levan had moved to Cornwall to work and get away from his family and his past. Both were running away and trying to recover from things they'd experienced, so you knew that there would be secrets revealed and fireworks would explode.
Iris for sure was my favourite character, especially the scene with Eden, Levan, and Simon, in her cottage. That was funny. But I also felt like the Simon situation was kind of left a little bit unresolved. The confrontation wasn't as final, and I could easily imagine Simon coming back, but he's a complete slimeball. Morwenna was another great character, and I'd like to read a story with her as the main character finding her love!
The setting of this novel was beautiful and it really makes you think about how difficult the life of a lighthouse keeper could have been, alone, and away from your family for weeks at a time, and how difficult it must have been for the families left behind as well. The descriptions of the cottages and the lighthouse are so vivid that you can really picture what Eden is seeing as she goes to work and back home to the cottages.
I love a bit of Phillipa Ashley, perfect for hot sunny days reading in the park, or cosy autumn evenings curled up in bed.
Centered around 3 generations of strong women- Iris, Sally, and Eden, and the family secrets that they struggle with. Then of course, there’s the hot next door neighbor who moves in, Levan, and changes their lives completely, especially Eden’s. The setting of the Cornish seaside as well as the lighthouse’s history was beautiful and fascinating at the same time. Really makes you feel like you are there. Thanks to Avon Books Uk and NetGalley for this eArc in exchange for my review
It took me awhile to get into this book. The setting is gorgeous, but I had trouble warming to the heroine, Eden, and wasn't certain I would like her grandmother and mother. It was also obvious that Levan, our hero, was holding back big secrets from Eden. By the time his secrets were revealed (way too late), they just didn't seem that big.
This isn't close to being one of my favorites of the author. In the end, it was okay, so I'd give it a C and three stars here.
A light-hearted romantic novel set in Cornwall. I had the absolute privilege of being able to dip into this book in the days leading up to, and following, my very own trip to the West Country. The plot isn't ridiculously complex or rich, but that's just about what I expected from this one. An easy, quick read.
I like the way the author built the summer and the cozy atmosphere, it made me relax too, but i have an issue with the characters they seemed to overdramatise some circumstances , like eden , she had no business getting mad over him for hiding his past that doesn't even affect the present her , and she never asked him about his past , the only time she did he said he can't tell her So he wasn't deceiving her... Poor levan, everyone guilt shamed him after everything he's been through! And they didn't even apologize for it... I hope their relationship was explored even more at the end and got deeper too...

Eden has sworn herself off men for life after the ex-husband betrayed her. She steps out of her beautiful costal cottage where she is running her coffee business and sets eyes on Speedo-wearing stranger Levan doing yoga in the next doors garden. Eden starts to get to know Levan she starts to think he may be different but is he as he seems. Family secrets are uncovered and she starts to question her faith in one’s she loves the most.
One of the many things that I enjoy about Phillipa Ashley’s writing is the volume of research that she packs into each book. This was no different and I am delighted to say that I learned about coffee roasting, lighthouse keeping, and surveillance by the intelligence services. Our main protagonist is Eden. She lives with her mother in a former lighthouse cottage since losing everything at the hands of her ex-husband. Duped out of her money, her home, and her future, she has no desire to feel attracted to another man for a long time. Eden is a third generation in a long line of lighthouse keepers, but now that everything is automated, she’s free to run her coffee business. With the support of her mother and her grandmother, she’s slowly rebuilding her confidence and learning to trust again. Levan makes a memorable appearance, as he indulges in a headstand, in his neighbouring garden, while wearing a pair of bright orange speedos. Despite her self-imposed moratorium from men, Eden can’t help feeling a zing of attraction as she spots his toned body. Eden and Levan begin a gentle friendship that begins to help restore her faith in men. Of course, as with all Phillipa’s books, there are some wonderful characters, and they add depth to the story. I loved Eden’s best friend, Morwenna, but her Granny was a hoot. At the heart of this story are three closely guarded secrets. Eden hates talking about what happened in her marriage, Levan won’t reveal why he is estranged from his parents, and who is the handsome man in the faded photograph that Eden discovers amongst her Granny’s things. As the characters follow a well-developed story arc, it’s impossible not to be drawn into their lives. The setting and characterisations are perfect, and I was able to relax in the knowledge that I was in expert hands. Phillipa Ashley has once again created an immersive book that captured my imagination from the earliest pages. I predict another best seller sticker coming her way.
First things first ... have plenty of coffee available when reading this incredible book! You can actually smell the lovely wonderful aroma of all the different coffee blends when reading!
A Secret Cornish Summer is a fascinating read, with a magnificent storyline, full of interesting extensive details. You can tell the book has been thoroughly researched. I am fascinated by lighthouses and this book gave a beautifully romantic story along with some wonderfully interesting themes including the lighthouse workers and the secret service. I learnt so much reading this book, along with enjoying a really lovely story with superb characters.
The book is set in beautiful Cornwall where friendships develop and some of the characters are brought alive by those they meet. Friendships are enhanced and with everyone’s help and encouragement they make such a difference to the life of so many of the characters. Helping them to move forward, leaving parts of their past behind to create and achieve a new bright and happy future.
The characterisation is so in-depth, and the family connections, so solid - despite the secrets held deeply within. I loved the generational storyline revolving around Iris, Sally and Eden. I felt like I was a character in the book. I would love to stay at one of the lighthouse cottages and visit the Coffee Roastery!
This is a perfect escapism read, but so much more. Full of friendship, family, romance, lighthouses and secrets. A brilliant read which I highly recommend! A big five stars!
What a wonderful treat to read this with the sun shining. Cornwall, a beautiful part of the country has been bought alive once again by Phillipa Ashley.
The characters were easy to get to know. There was a strong feeling of family togetherness between Eden, her mother and grandmother. I loved them all apart from Simon, her ex husband. Lies just rolled off of his tongue. The new neighbour was adorable and fell in love with him from the beginning. Her grandmother, who is just going to reach the age of 90, is truly feisty, lovable and spirited. She really does love life
Eden, had grown up in Cornwall with her mother and father. He was a lighthouse keeper. After being betrayed by her husband she has to re-evaluate her life and move back in with her mother. She throws herself into her new business venture.
Learning to trust another man again, is not an easy thing. A new owner of the cottage next door, might just be the one person who maybe able to change her thinking. The one thing that Eden doesn’t like is vital information being kept from her.
The story is full of secrets, which Eden finds hard to accept. Are people who they say they are.
As we were taken around the lighthouse, it was so easy to visualise the setting and hear the sound of the sea. The descriptive writing was amazing. The Cornish setting brings love, hope and secrets to the reader.
Thank you Phillipa for allowing me to read this and give a five star review. You never disappoint me. Can’t wait for the Christmas novel.
This book has everything- romance, friendship, family love, a beautiful location and secrets. Eden has come back home to Cornwall after divorcing her ex-husband Simon. Returning to live in one of the old lighthouse cottages with her mum. She has set up her own café in a container on a local holiday park and roasts her own ethically sourced beans in one of the rooms in the old lighthouse. Having lunch with her granny after a morning of roasting beans they notice a man (Levan) in his speedos, on his head , in the garden next door. Built like a Greek god watching/spying on him through the fence might be sneaky but, definitely worth it. They find out that Levan has bought the cottage so will be their new neighbour. Although very polite and friendly Eden finds it very strange that he hardly ever tells them anything about himself. As secrets and lies caused her marriage breakup she finds it very hard to trust anyway so his behaviour causes alarm bells for her. With her friends help her business is getting busier by the day and helping to organise a surprise birthday party for her granny means she has very little spare time so, spending any of this precious time with Levan is something she needs to think about carefully. Will she give him a chance to get to know him better? A fantastic holiday read.
I adore the cover of A Secret Cornish Summer, pastels and sea and cliffs and blue skies. Add this together with a beautifully written story and you’ve got a summer winner right here.
I found this latest offering from Phillipa Ashley, full of thrills, spills and romance, and it was all set amongst an amazing backdrop in Cornwall, at the very bottom tip of the UK. I loved Eden, and I so much wanted her life to continue on the upward spiral she has found for herself, after a failed marriage to a complete and utter git! Iris is just a legend amongst all Granny’s, and who can’t love a cat called Sardine!
Phillipa pulled it out of the bag again with this one. Her writing is incredibly addictive and I could almost smell the coffee in Eden’s roastery and the tang of the salt in the sea air. I found the history of the lighthouse keepers fascinating. I have always wanted to stay in a lighthouse which has been converted into a holiday cottage - maybe I should make it happen!
Grab yourself a copy of A Secret Cornish Summer if you need something to read by the pool this summer. Or, if you’re currently in the middle of winter, snuggle up by the fire with a cup of cocoa and dream of warmer days!
Thank you to Avon Books UK for the opportunity to read and review a copy of A Secret Cornish Summer by Phillipa Ashley.

My Opinion
Phillipa Ashley has written a great holiday read, this time featuring a lighthouse. Eden needs to learn to trust men again after her ex-husband Simon betrayed her - can she learn to trust Leven? It seems that most of the characters have a secret, which makes for an entertaining read. A beautiful story with some great descriptions.
Definitely a page-turner for me. I was engrossed from the beginning and wanted to continue reading nonstop. I realized that I need to continue only when I had a chuck of time, since I knew it would be difficult to stop!
The plot is full of intrigue, family history, starting over and learning to trust again. It was very emotional to read.
The characters are fantastic, as always with a book written by Phillipa Ashley! I especially adore elderly people in books I read, so the inclusion of Iris as a main character was joyful. It was delightful to learn about lighthouses and the close-knit family that serviced them for years.
Since this a romance, I must say that the two destined for love are wonderfully suited for each other and I loved being on their journey to a happily ever after. Eden and Levan have a rocky road, but they can handle it and will come out at the end of the path stronger as one.
Thank you to Avon Books UK and NetGalley for allowing me to read the advance reader copy, with no obligation to write a review. My review is written freely as a hobby, and is totally my own opinion, not influenced by receiving the ARC.
Once again Phillipa Ashley spins a gripping tale of love and secrets... I love her books and always welcome the next story to sit comfortably with a cuppa on my favourite chair!. Eden bless her, has had a tough time in the love stakes. She was with a husband who was a stranger to the truth and when all his secrets came out, she was left with nothing. She had to move back with her mum and start again. Luckily for her, she had the drive to start a new coffee business and has built it up well and is making a living from it. A gorgeous man moves in next door, but her granny noticed him first!. In fact, they are caught spying on him!!. He introduces himself as Levan, and he workes from home in I.T. They start to get closer, but there are secrets between them that need to be told if they have any chance of a relationship...... Oh boy!. What a corker!!. What an engrossing book!. I took it everywhere I went, and read it in twenty four hours!!. You'll love it!!. I received a free ARC book for an honest review. #Netgalley, #avonbooksuk, #phillipa.ashleyauthor.
I have been reading a lot of heavy books and wanted to relax into a lighter book since it’s July and I was in need of some lightness in my life and wanted to enjoy a simple, joyful summer read.
At first this story and the characters hooked me. I was excited to read about a woman overcoming heartbreak, reinventing her life, building a business she was passionate about to support herself in this new chapter of her life. I’m in a space right now where I can relate. The descriptions of the laid back, serene coastal life were so enjoyable and I really loved learning about what life was like as a lighthouse keeper’s family.
Where the story lost me though was the way the relationship between the male and female characters unfolded. It started to become too focused on PHYSICAL attraction vs a deeper MENTAL and EMOTIONAL connection. The story started to feel shallow and boring and lost my interest. I DNF it and decided to move on to a different story that was more interesting and deep.
I can enjoy a light read but I CAN NOT suffer a shallow read.
I have read a few of Phillipa’s books and so couldn’t wait to start this straight away. However i wasn’t counting on spending the whole morning just reading the book without stopping until I had finished. It was a lovely gentle romantic read based on Eden, Levan and Edens family who I loved, especially Iris her grandmother. Eden the main character was likeable and kept my interest, I felt invested and wanted her to be happy and do well after her previous problems . The books setting was in Cornwall as the title gives away and I almost felt that I was there with them on a hot summers day, drinking coffee and taking in the view. It was a lovely romantic plot but also without giving away any spoilers had other themes/plots to keep my interest. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend . Thanks to Netgalley, Avon books UK and Phillips Ashley for an advanced copy in exchange for and unbiased and honest review.
I love Phillipa Ashleys books set in Cornwall. You feel as though you are in Cornwall amongst friends. This book features Eden and her new neighbour Levan in the Lighthouse cottages. Eden is wary of love and although Levan is extremely good looking and charismatic, she needs to keep him at arms length. I loved the way that family relationships are explored, with Levan feeling a great affinity to Eden's lovely family. He is keen to help, but has secrets that he is keeping hidden. Whilst planning a 90th birthday party, they discover that granny has secrets of her own. I loved every page. I could just imagine staying in the wonderful cottages and being invited to look around the lighthouse, enjoying the new coffee blends and collecting vegetables from the allotment and sitting to enjoy the views.
I really enjoyed this book. The location was beautiful and I really enjoyed the descriptions and details. The stories about the lighthouse keepers were interesting and something I’d never really thought about before, or indeed given much thought about and I found their experiences really interesting to learn about. Learning about how to roast coffee beans was fascinating and I swear I could smell the coffee whilst reading. The back story of Levan was quite a twist and not what I had expected. I liked how he tried to do the right thing with Eden and also I really enjoyed his friendship with Iris, and her little story twist even more. It was beautifully written anecdote wonderful friendships and family relationships were depicted and I could totally understand why Levan wanted to be part of that loving family and community.
