In a Nutshell: A fast-paced crime thriller involving a missing girl, her distraught mother, a documentary film crew, and the online true crime community. The ending was quite farfetched, otherwise this was very enjoyable.

Story Synopsis:
Derry, Northern Ireland. Seven years ago, Nora’s four-year-old daughter Daisy went missing. Nora has no memory of what occurred that day.
Currently, though she is married and has a little son Luca, she still can’t give up on her quest to find out what happened to Daisy, despite her husband’s disapproval. When a young filmmaker named Izzy approaches her to tell her story through a documentary, Nora’s response ends up creating ripples across the past, spiralling into a tense situation that might endanger the safety of Luca. How can Nora find out the truth without compromising on Luca’s life?
The story comes to us in the first person perspectives of Nora and Izzy.

Where the book worked for me:
😍 It is quite fast-paced. I could easily complete this 400-pager within a day.

😍 The prologue was interesting. Though not thrilling per se, it creates the right amount of curiosity about what’s to come.

😍 The author doesn't waste time in needless build-up and background, despite what the length suggests. The main plot gets rolling from chapter one itself.

😍 The thrill or curiosity doesn't come just from wanting to know what happened to Daisy. It's also from trying to figure out Izzy's intentions and Nora’s mental state. It’s quite tough to decide whom to believe, especially as both Nora and Izzy are written in first person.. All the main adult characters have shades of grey. This adds to the fun of playing detective.

😍 The author’s spotlight on the online true crime community rings quite true. Her writing encompasses the genuine enthusiasts, the voyeurs, as well as the trolls.

😍 While some of the “twists” were guessable, there were enough surprises along the way to keep me hooked and happy.

😍 Despite her trauma, Nora doesn’t have an alcohol or drug dependency. Yes, this deserves a separate point of appreciation!

Where the book could have worked better for me:
😐 The final 15% or so goes much over the top. Secrets are revealed too easily, explanations are given too freely, and cases are resolved too smoothly. Much of the backstory didn’t feel convincing.

😐 One event involving Izzy and Tom came out of the blue and did nothing for the story.

This #OwnVoices work could easily have been a 4.5 star for me had the ending been better. It wasn’t bad but it just felt too rushed and too neat. The “reason” behind the past events was unbelievably silly. Nevertheless, the book mostly does justice to its theme and offers enough of tense entertainment to satisfy most readers.

I had read this author’s “The Nurse” and had found it also a nice thriller despite its quick ending. This one is even better in terms of my overall experience. I’ll surely keep an eye out for her future books.

4 stars.

My thanks to Avon Books UK and NetGalley for the DRC of “In The Dark”. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

Revenge is sweet but it takes careful planning and patience to get it absolutely right.

Nora Logue is infamous, very well known in Derry and throughout Northern Ireland because of the strange events surrounding the disappearance of Nora’s daughter, four year old Daisy seven years ago. Many do not believe Nora when she says she has no memory of that day, just check the vitriolic social media aimed at her and the abuse she sometimes suffers when she leaves home. She’s tried so hard to rebuild her life, she is now married to Brendan and they have a lovely little boy called Luca. Today though, Nora has a chance albeit a slim one, to maybe find out what has happened to Daisy. She is about to meet Izzy Devine a television producer who wants to shine a light on the case and maybe see if a tree or two can be shaken.

Wow, this book sure packs a punch or three. It’s an excellent mystery thriller to get your teeth into, with it’s constantly changing twisting plot that has you in its firm grip. Part of the story is told from Nora‘s perspective and this is very powerful. Her fractured dislocated memories have a dreamlike / nightmarish surreal quality to them which is very compelling. You constantly change your mind about her and question where the truth lies but you do not doubt her overwhelming love for Daisy as that loss is palpable and raw. Like her you are full of suspicion and then fear especially as all around her there seems to be such malice and hate. Who can she trust?

A lot of this plays out on social media where those involved really are dirty in the gutter with the scandalous and vitriolic accusations which leave a bitter taste in your mouth. Some of this intrusion is downright creepy but then it becomes horrifyingly dangerous. The storytelling is rife with tension, it’s very intense as you feel the strain, anger and subsequent unravelling.

As the end nears there are some jaw dropping revelations, there is cruelty, lies and duplicity and such scheming its beggars belief being staggering in its magnitude. My only slight reservation is the finale seems to be resolved a tad quickly and maybe, just maybe a little bit easily??? Despite this small point it’s another cracking read from a very good author.

With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Avon Books U.K. for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.

I always get excited when I hear Claire Allan has a new book out and this is no exception. This is another unputdownable read from the author.

Seven years ago, Nora Logue went for a walk with her four year old daughter Daisy in the woods but only Nora came out. Nora cannot remember that day or where her daughter has gone. It is all a blur. After extensive search by the police, daisy still hasn't been found.

Seven years on, Izzy and Tom are making a documentary of the case to see if it will bring in new leads to find Daisy. As sightings of her are talked about on a blog called Amateursleuths.com. Nora thinks after all these years that her daughter may not be still alive. Nora has now moved on with her life. She has met Brendan and they have a little boy called Luca. Nora has never forgotten her daughter.

Thank you, Avon for an ARC of 'In the dark'. This is another thriller full of tension and suspense from the author, of a mother's plight to find her daughter I really enjoyed this story, but as other reviews have said., I did feel the ending was a bit rushed. 4.5 stars from me.

Claire Allan’s voice and ability to keep you gripped to the page are pure magic. Prepare to lose sleep as you work your way through a rollercoaster of emotions, theories, and near-misses. This book is the poster child for taking the old missing child story we all know and flipping it on its head. I couldn’t get enough of the terrifying premise and delicious storytelling. Utterly captivating, this pulse-pounding thriller is one not to be missed. Thriller lovers, get your hands on this one and clear all your plans! IN THE DARK demands to be read in one sitting.

I have always enjoyed Claire Allan’s crime thrillers so I was excited to get an advanced copy of In The Dark. As always, I powered through it in a day, each chapter leaving me needing more. The main characters were not particularly likeable, Nora was a mess as you would expect her to be. The ending was a bit over the top for me but Instill really enjoyed the story.

Nora Logue is infamous. 7 years ago, her daughter Daisy disappeared whilst playing in the woods. Nora has no memory of what happened. She is now remarried and has a son, Luca. But she never stops thinking about or looking for Daisy. So when she is approached by Izzy, a journalist who is filming a true crime documentary on her case, she sees it as a chance to find more information and hopefully what really happened. But it leads her down a dark and dangerous path, putting herself and her family in danger. So what happened to Daisy and is she still alive?

Thai’s was an addictive page turner that will keep you guessing. Thanks to Avon Books UK and NetGalley for my advanced copy to read. Published on January 19th

Everyone in Derry, Northern Ireland knows Nora Logue as the woman whose four-year-old daughter disappeared. She’s been facing the fingerpointing and stares for the past seven years. When a TV producer reaches out, claiming to spotlight the case, Nora grabs the lifeline, weak and hopeless as it may seem. She is not prepared for what she finds.

Allan exposes a generation of haters who are hiding behind social media anonymity. She shows the lack of emotional empathy that is increasing and showcased online when people are allowed to make comments that they might not otherwise have made should they have been required to have their name and face associated with their comments. The picture she paints of cyberbullying is flabbergasting. Allan’s focus on these hurtful and anonymous comments parallels a ramping up of tension, causing me to further appreciate Nora’s pain and anger.

Allan’s heart and soul went into this book! It’s fantastic. Not only was I hooked by the mystery, but the plot twists kept me on my toes. The chapters from Nora’s point of view enabled me to get into the mind of a woman who has lost a child and feel the depth of loss and the haze that accompanies this trauma. The ‘pull’ between the characters was stellar; I could almost feel Nora being pulled by her husband, her son, the TV producer and the claims from those who say her daughter is still alive. On the other hand, I could sense the repulsion and ‘push’ from the Derry citizens. Allan was able to enlighten me on the Jenga-like situation an abduction creates, both for the family and the press. In the search for answers, everyone risks losing something.

As you turn the last page, the light bulb will go on and you’ll appreciate the fabulous title.

I was gifted this copy by Avon Books UK and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.

Too predictable but equally an unexciting ending. I found the build up to the plot great but found it easy to predict the next steps.

The book is about Nora, and her child, Daisy is missing. Seven years ago they both went into the woods, only for Nora to come out in the end. She has recollection of what happened. She then meets Brendan, and have another kid Luca. She agrees to do an interview with Izzy and Tom. As soon as news breaks out Nora is doing an interview, an online forum pops off similar to Reddit and users start to share their theories, which starts to get increasingly unhinged.

I like the plot and the direction it was going in, but I found it easy to predict the next steps. Plots like these only go two ways: well pulled off and gripping or it falls short. This one did in the end. I liked the writing style, and it was tense at points but it was hard to sustain the level without the plot plateauing.

I was quickly pulled into this story. Nora has a chance to find out what happened to her daughter but is it worth the risk to her son? That's the position Nora Logue finds herself in seven years after her daughter Daisy's disappearance. I was quickly turning the pages, desperate to find out what had happened the day Daisy disappeared. We have small clues cleverly placed throughout the story. A documentary maker, Izzy, wants Nora to appear in her show to try and find out what actually happened that day. The story is told in alternate chapters from Nora and Izzy's perspectives. I was guessing all the way through to the end.

Another fantastic, twisty thriller from Claire Allan.

I've read nearly all of her other books and enjoyed them all. This one was no expection.

I really liked the true crime documentary aspect of this book. It was an interesting plot point which I've not read a lot of in crime thrillers.

The writing was fantastic. I was hooked from the very beginning.

I did kind of guess some of the ending but not completely. There was still plenty of twists and turns to keep me intrigued throughout.

I really like the missing child trope, but I've read it so much it can be a bit overdone but this book managed to bring something new to the table.

Overall, fantastic read and I can't wait to read more from the author in the future.

A missing child is every parent’s nightmare. Nora has lived in this nightmare for 7 years since the day her 4-year-old daughter Daisy went missing in the woods. No one has seen her since.
Although seven years later Nora is married and have another child-a boy named Luca, she still feels the guilt and want to find her daughter, yet, secretly fearing the answers.
When Izzy, a journalist, want to interview Nora for a documentary about her daughter's disappearance, Nora reluctantly agrees with the interview, hoping some new clues may come out. What follows is lots of social media hatred, misleading information, and threats to her son...

Wow, this story was intense. The missing child may be an overused thriller idea but this story was fast-paced and rich in psychological depth. The story is told from Nora's and Izzi's POV's and it was interesting to see Nora from the side. I was plotting my own scenarios, questioning what I would do if I were in similar situation, distrusting everyone's motives. There were many twists and turns throughout the book and I was gripped to the very end. I was quite confused with

7 years ago, Nora’s daughter Daisy went missing while they were playing together in the woods. Nora has no memory of what happened to her and as a result has spent every day trying to figure out what she did wrong and where her daughter went. Now it’s 7 years later and she’s married and has a son but she has never given up looking for Daisy. So when she is approached by a journalist who is filming a true crime series on her case and wants her to put her to get involved in it, she sees it as a chance to get fresh eyes on the case AB’s hopefully find more information that will lead to finding her daughter.
Nora is an unreliable narrator but then some of the other characters turn out to be unreliable as well and there are lots of twists to keeps you guessing up til the end.

Claire Allan likes to keep her readers on their toes, and 'In The Dark' is no exception. The book says much about the ways in which social (and mainstream) media can twist and amplify news stories to suit their own agenda, and to satisfy the voyeuristic curiosity of the public. Through her characters, Allan invites us to consider how it feels to be demonised, and forced to live under the microscope of public opinion. The book has two narrators and examines grief, loss and trauma through the thriller lens. This is what I like most about Claire Allan - her ability to illuminate real issues via popular fiction. The book certainly gave me some food for thought, as regards the true cost of the increasingly popular form of entertainment we consume via documentary films.

A cold case mystery, which is one reason I wanted to read this. I love cold cases. But even though I liked the concept, there are elements of this I found hard to accept. Mainly, the revelation of why Daisy went missing. It honestly had me reeling, not because I was stunned with the feeling of WOW, but because I was stunned with the feeling of MEH! There is no logic to it. I can say, this worked and that worked all I want, but if the foundation of the key component in the story lacks all logic, then what's the point of it all?

There are other things that didn't work for me, but let's focus on what did. I enjoyed the use of doubt in the book. Who's lying and who's truthful? That was well done and kept me wondering about some characters. I also thought the unreliable narrator trope was well done. We've seen it so often now that I think authors take a risk whenever they choose that path. It worked on this occasion. Another thing I liked is the use of off narrative characters from online true crime forums, who felt like real characters in the book. It would have been so much better to bring some of those characters in more to the scenes, but it still gave this story depth and was used a few times to drive the story. I can't recall seeing it used like this before in a mystery.

It is a story driven somewhat by emotion. But I think the story concentrated on that so much, there wasn't room for any organic progression about the cold case mystery. By the end, there were sharp jolts to the narrative, as the author strove to bring together a semblance of a worthwhile conclusion. I think some readers will "heart" the ending. I thought it marred by the revelation of why Daisy went missing.

I've not read Claire Allan before, and I've seen comments that readers enjoyed other books. Being somebody who generally likes to read an author's entire catalogue, I may find my way to more books by Allan in the future.

Loved this page turner of a book! Nora's daughter, Daisy, went missing 7 years ago but she can't remember the details of her disappearance. Everyone knows her in Derry and there's a lot of speculation about what really happened that day in the woods.
Now a documentary is going to be made about her story and it starts to stir up memories for Nora and there's new developments in the case. It kept me on the edge of my seat and guessing right up until the end

I enjoyed the book, but have mixed feelings about the ending. I was hooked from the start and couldn't wait to find out what happened to Daisy and if Nora was involved with her daughter's disappearance. There were so many twists and turns. I didn't love any of the characters. I would have given the book four stars but the ending ruined it for me. When the truth about Daisy was finally revealed, the reason behind everything just seemed crazy. The blame for what happened all those years ago was put on the wrong person. Did Brendan actually love Nora? He wanted Nora to pretty much forget about Daisy and only focus on Luca. What he did was horrible. For the longest time I thought he might have been behind Daisy's disappearance. Did Izzy know anything about Tom before she hired him? So many people had ulterior motives throughout the book, and didn't really care about Nora's wellbeing. I'm surprised people were able to keep so many secrets for so many years.

I recommend the book. It wasn't my favorite but I still enjoyed it. It definitely kept me in suspense until the very end. Look forward to reading more books by the author. Loved the cover of the book.

The ending ruined this book for me. The reason for Daisy being kidnapped was simply ridiculous - why would adults kidnap a preschooler because of how a kid in their class was abused and left alone in the woods for a night, then ended up dying? Nora was a child herself when that happened. Her father was the one who did wrong (he made Nora pick who was left in the woods, which would be traumatic for her too). So I found the ending completely absurd and unbelievable. Tom’s subplot also seemed unrealistic, can’t imagine anyone going to that length for a documentary.

The book moved a bit slowly but did pick up. Nora was an interesting character and felt three dimensional.

Ok...so a true crime documentary in the making I wondered which angle this tale would tell. I'm not a fan of journalists and the media frenzy that leeches off other people's misfortune all to get the biggest and best scoop. Sensationalism at its best. But IN THE DARK is different and not what I expected. I should have known...it's Claire Allan and nothing is ever what it seems under her pen.

Everyone knows Nora Logue. She was the mother of four year old Daisy who went into the woods one day and never came out. Nora, on the other hand, did. And to this day, seven years later, she has no recollection of what happened there or to that of her little girl who just simply vanished. But as with all cases such as this, everyone has an opinion and most have no problem airing them. And as a result, Nora has been plagued by hate and vitriol from the public at large because really, how could she not remember what happened in those woods? Or what happened to Daisy? Surely she knows exactly what happened and is playing at the whole disassociative amnesia thing.

Did she see where Daisy went? Did she kill her little girl and try to cover it up? But if that were the case, surely the police would have found her body by now? After all, where else would Daisy's body be but in those woods? Which was painstakingly searched at the time. So what happened to Daisy? And what, or did, Nora have to do with it?

Seven years later, Nora has married Brendan and has a little boy, Luca. Together they are trying to move forward but stil Nora cannot forget Daisy. And, until she knows what truly happened to her, she never will.

Now Nora is approached by true crime documentary filmmaker Izzy Devine, who wants to feature Daisy's case and speak to Nora about her recollections of that day. Together, can they uncover the truth of what happened that day? And reveal what really happened to Daisy? Or will Izzy discover what everyone already suspects - that Nora killed her little girl?

As soon as word gets out that a true crime documentary is being made about Daisy Logue, true crime fans jump on the case and begin to theorise their own ideas and hypotheses about the cold case. And then newcomers join the forum with their own ideas and begin to point the finger at Nora...with hate and malice.

Until a photo surfaces that could change everything...

IN THE DARK is a deep dark psychological thriller that really keeps you in the dark right up to the final pages. Unless you are clever enough to piece the jigsaw together beforehand. The story is tightly plotted and keeps you guessing throughout. Just when you think one thing, along comes something to make you second guess your theory.

The story unfolds through Nora and Izzy's perspectives mainly. Though there are a couple of chapters narrated anonymously by "The Four". Nora is a completely unreliable narrator that we can't trust what she thinks or says as she borders upon delusional, so unhinged by not knowing what really happened in those woods seven years before. She certainly sounds like a candidate for the asylum with her dreamlike imaginings and trances, not to mention her behaviour. But then some of the other characters are unreliable also. I didn't trust either Tom or Brendan though I couldn't quite put my finger on why. I just didn't.

I love missing child thrillers, but IN THE DARK puts a completely different spin on it that it is somewhat unique and easily stands out from the rest. The true crime documentary angle was also an original aspect and interesting plot point.

Overall, a pageturning thriller that even the title will keep you guessing until the very end when you'll then appreciate its meaning.

3.5 stars. Nora Logue is living every mother's worst nightmare. Seven years ago, her child went missing whilst they were playing in the woods. Gone without a trace. Rather than receiving sympathy, the media has painted her as a " bad" mother - for not keeping a close enough eye on her child. Local citizens in Derry label her as strange, even before the incident, and hint at her involvement in Daisy's disappearance. Nora has a partner and young son; she attempts to move forward quietly with her life when she is approached about a documentary. How could she possibly move on when there is a possibility of discovering something about Daisy. An amateur sleuth forum posts some startling messages that hint at a disturbing past for Nora. It soon becomes clear that Nora is being watched and her family are under threat. After a slow start, the pace intensifies and creates a gripping read with some startling reveals. #inthedark #claireallan #avonbooks #netgalley #crimethriller #northernireland #derry #londonderry #missingchild

This is the second book Ive read by this author and yet again I am let breathless by her work. This book is all about a woman whose daughter went missing. Fast forward years later and Nora has moved on as best she can she is married has her own son however she has never forgotten her daughter even though her outlook is very dark. When the seven year anniversary of the disappearance arrives a reporter shows up to try to get the unanswered questions and find out what really happened to the missing child. This book is told through multiple points of view and multiple time frames which I normally don't like however it was very well executed and easy to follow. As well as these switches were very important to the story and gave it all the mystery that made it such a fantastic read. This thriller was very interesting from the characters to the plot and kept me guessing through every part. There were so many twists and turns in this book that it really had you guessing right up until the very end. While I loved this whole book it was the ending that really sealed it for me. It was absolutely fantastic! The author Claire Allan has a way of writing characters that really jump off the page. As a reader you root for her characters and the struggles that they go through are very sad but you can't wait to see how they tackle them. Very good read I'm glad I was able to check it out.

In The Dark is a compelling read that will have you rushing to get to the last page.

Revenge is a dish best served cold we are told.

Nora's daughter Daisy disappeared over 4 years ago and many think Nora is the responsible one.

Memory is a strange thing and Nora's is protecting her or is it.

When Izzy comes to town to do a documentary on Daisy's disappearance feelings in not only Nora but the town who have in reality terrorized Nora are brought to the forefront.

Pages will turn quickly.

I was totally on Nora's side and can only hope she could get resolution.

The journey to find out is a great read and like of all Claire Allan's books well worth it.

Thanks to NetGalley and Avon Books UK, Avon for a compelling read that will stay with me for a long time

A gripping mystery, In The Dark is a fast-paced and twisty crime thriller that leaves you full of suspicion.

I read a similar plot earlier this month, but I found this read much more compelling and engaging. I especially enjoyed the true crime aspects of how the investigation developed and how certain things played out on social media. It kept everything progressing in a quick and interesting way and added a lot more to the story.

This was my first book by Claire Allan, and I definitely want to read more!

’m a fan of Claire Allan and I was thrilled to receive a copy of her latest book. This story centres around every parents worst nightmare- losing their child.

Nora’s young daughter Daisy has disappeared and not only is she reeling from her disappearance but also her inability to remember what happened on the fateful day it happened.

When Izzy a journalist appears in her life wanting to make a documentary about Daisy’s case , Nora decides to cooperate in an attempt to jog her memory and hopefully find her daughter.

Seven years has passed since the tragic event and Nora is now married with a young son. Her husband does not agree with Nora’s decision to be involved in the documentary, but Nora feels to move on in her life she has to at least try in the attempt to find answers.

The plot of this book is thrilling and fast moving. I was second guessing throughout, I had implicated all the main characters at one stage only to find out I was completely off the mark.

This book will keep you guessing to the end a great thrilling read !!

Was a good time, more of a psicological triller, imagine your child goes missing on your watch and you can't remember a thing!

There were a few moments that seemed a bit slow, some back and forward, no real developments. But in the end, the loose strands were tied, and we were left with a satisfying conclusion, which i do enjoy in these books.

The "why" i did had an issue with, it did seem a bit farfetched, but I think still realistic enough to satisfy me.

I really enjoyed this gripping and often gritty novel about Nora Logue's pain when her four year old child goes missing. With topical parallels, conspiracy theorists and keyboard warriors pile on her without knowing the truth, making her life hellish. Meanwhile, a TV journalist named Izzy approaches Nora seven years after Daisy's disappearance to try and figure out the mystery, but this acts as a catalyst to the shocking events that follow.

I was addicted to this book and looked forward to going to bed so I could get another few chapters in. I'd never read any Claire Allen books before, but I will definitely be seeking them out after this one!

IN THE DARK

I was intrigued by the cover, and the title of this novel and so proceeded to read.

A difficult review for me, where I did enjoy the story, it fell a bit flat for me.
Not helped by the fact that I’d figured out who was involved quite early on.

The prologue was perfect, creating the suspense of the mystery that’s about to unfold.

With no pointless character build up the main plot to the story gets going from the very start of chapter one.
And with many twist throughout each chapter you’re propelled to continue.

Although however twisty, I found the pace to slow and become predictable; like I mentioned I’d figured parts out early on.

I was also disappointed with how rushed the ending to this novel was.

But still, I’d say In The Dark was a gripping thriller.

Wow.

I went in blind but boy was it good! It was a twist and as things slowly start coming out and everything starts happening it was insane and that shock was intense! I enjoyed it! Better review to come!
