I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this from the author, and wow! What a fun and magical ride! This would have been a quick read, however I decided, since it's a middle grade book, I would read it with my middle grade son. Each night before bed, I would read him 2-3 chapters, and he would always beg for me to keep reading.

Shad Hadid is a Lebanese 12-year-old living in Portland, Oregon with his Teta. He's obsessed with cooking and baking and spends most days after school at the Lebanese bakery, inhaling the sweet aromas and trying to avoid the school bully, Sarah. One day, though, while he's there, a dark shadow attacks, and with a magical stink bomb that he remembered his Baba teaching him to make, Shad is able to chase away the shadow with the help of the baker, Kahem.

With Kahem's guidance, Shad discovers he is an Alchemist, a sort of scientific magician who can craft spells with precise mixtures and a little bit of imagination. Soon he is invited to the illustrious Alexandria Academy to hone his skills. However, when he gets there, no one at the Academy seems to know what alchemy is, and that school has more bullies than home.

This truly was a delightful read that both my son and I adored. Shad is a realistic middle grade character and a hero worth following, as he has a good sense of right and wrong and is always willing to stand up for the downtrodden. There is as much heart as there is humor in this book, with a plethora of fart jokes that kept my son and me laughing as we pored through pages. This is a must add to your middle grade list for 2022. My 9-year-old Wimpy Kid fan gave it a solid "10 out of 10."

What really shines in this book is the author's unapologetic love for Lebanese culture! From the food to the family conventions to the descriptions of how main character Shad's family learned and practiced alchemy back home in Lebanon, this whole book is a love letter to Lebanese kids all over the world.

Shad Hadid finds himself thrust into a world of magic and danger when he inherits his family's alchemical talents and ends up enrolled in the oldest Arabic school in the world. At the end of the day, the book's main message is that true strength lies in faith and trust in oneself, and in one's friends. This action-packed MG treasure is a must-read for anyone who wants a good old-fashioned "kids go on a magical adventure to save the world" story!

Author’s Note: I was given a chance to read an early copy in exchange for an honest review!
Go check out my blog: LoA Archives Blog
First point of order: Go Pre-Order this book. No “buts”, go pre-order this book. And then you can thank me later after you’ve read it in October 2022.
Second point of order: This is one of my favourite books I have read so far.

Shad Hadid and the Alchemists of Alexandria, as I pointed out in my very quick book review on Goodreads before being able to write out a whole review, is like a “warm hug” and I describe it as such because it really did feel like a warm hug, one I definitely needed amidst all the chaos in my student life and in the world in general.

The book follows Shad (this is the moment of dramatic gasps please) who is a 12-year-old Lebanese-American who never seemed to fit in (*sobs in first-gen immigrant because same*). So, to cope with this and the periodical bullying, he cooks and bakes for his Teta, and hangs out at the local Lebanese bakery, dreaming of opening his own.

All is well, as well as it could be, until one day Shad is attacked by a shadow, a necromancer to be exact. After being saved by the baker Kahem, Shad learns that he is descended from a long line of alchemists and that Kahem can teach him.

“Mila, what on earth is an alchemist?”

Well, it’s a scientific magician who uses things like spices and flowers and such to create spells and mixtures. I know saying “scientific magician” might be seen as a juxtaposition (my HS English teacher would be so proud) but trust me, it works.

So, Shad learns alchemy and then he gets whisked away to the magical Alexandria Academy in order to truly hone his alchemist skills. Weirdly enough, no one knows what alchemy is, he still has to put up with lessons of math and chemistry (which Shad isn’t great at) and whenever he does demonstrate his alchemy, no one seems to remember it the next day.

When Shad discovers a sinister plot with his friends, and he sees several familiar faces (much to his disdain), he needs to get all the help he can find, even if that means teaming up with someone he was not particularly stoked to see.

That’s all I can say, as far as the synopsis goes. As for my review, here it is:

I read this book in a matter of about 4 hours, maybe even less. Usually, I tend to drag books, especially ARCs till the release date but I was just so sucked into this world, and the writing, that I couldn’t focus on anything else. Yes, I did drop all my current reads just to read this book. Jrieje’s writing is so refreshing, especially the descriptions of food (it made me want baklava even if I am not a big fan of it) and his characters are so well-written. Shad is not your typical protagonist, he is fiercely protective of his family and friends and extremely quick on his feet. And he’s a very talented baker (and alchemist or something) His friends, Donny, Rey, and Hayati were super fun to read about! I honestly laughed when I saw how Donny was always asleep (this was me in like 11th and 12th grade a lot of the time because I was so tired). I also really loved the bond Shad had with his Teta, it was very sweet and reminded me of me and my grandmother. Kahem was a really cool character as well, I love how he just took Shad on as an apprentice and the way he became so protective of him, it truly warmed my heart. The plot! The reveals! The characters! Honestly, this book was truly so, so much fun and a great pick me up in between the incredibly heavy and long fantasy books I have been reading.

GO! Pre-Order! Otherwise, I will send necromancers after you. (lol, kidding. Or am I?)

Yeah, I am definitely going to get my brother to read this one as well.

Love,

Mila

What worked:
Shad moved with his father to the United States from Lebanon, so the Arabic culture is a big part of the story. Shad lives with his grandma, his Teta, since his father, his Baba, died in a car accident. He stops by a local bakery daily to enjoy the delicious aromas and to watch the baker’s assistants make baklava and knafeh. Arabic food is often mentioned throughout the story, and Shad often uses Arabic words as exclamations. He uses the word fig as a form of swearing or as a derogatory term toward others. Other cultural terms are used, but readers should be able to use context to understand their meanings.
Bullies are an issue for Shad at home and at the school for alchemy. Part of his problem is the fact that he refuses to back down to them, and he won’t stand by while others are being bullied. Sarah is his main antagonist even though they’d been best friends a few years ago, until her parents told her to stop hanging out with an Arabic boy. She bullies him at school and on the street, and he doesn’t make things better with his verbal barbs and pranks. On Shad’s first day at the alchemy school, he steps in when he sees a girl being bullied and he takes the blame when another classmate makes an embarrassing comment about the dean. This demonstrates his moral character, but it makes him immediately known to everyone at the school, including the bullies. Unfortunately, Shad is shocked when a familiar bully from his past appears and is determined to make Shad’s life miserable, and dangerous.
The early part of the book sounds like many other middle-grade books as the main character discovers he has unknown abilities and attends a school for training. The twist this time is when Shad arrives and learns no one knows anything about alchemy. Basically, alchemy involves mixing ingredients to create elixirs, powders, and other concoctions. It’s supposedly not magic, but the alchemist’s thoughts and intentions provide the final element to finalize the creation. The essence of the plot is how necromancers are trying to eliminate all alchemists from existence if they don’t share the necromancer’s evil objectives. They want to create an elixir to give eternal life and raise the original necromancer, but they can’t figure out the final ingredient or the measurements. Of course, Shad is the only one with that knowledge, so danger awaits him in the shadows wherever he goes.
What didn’t work as well:
Some “battle” scenes are harder to visualize/accept when characters are mixing ingredients to use as weapons or for defense. Can you picture combatants combining various ingredients while fighting is going on around them? Alchemy is like science and requires specific ingredients and measurements, but Shad often eyeballs the amounts of substitute compounds he uses. These concerns don’t affect the entertainment value of the book, but they just seem odd.
The Final Verdict:
Search for the good in an enemy. The concept of Shad attending a school for alchemy where no one has heard of it makes this story very imaginative. Shad’s an admirable protagonist, as his empathy, bravery, and determination drive him to succeed. I’m looking forward to the sequel, and I recommend you give this book a shot!

One side note: Shad was my SUPPORT SYSTEM against all the difficulties I faced last month! Without this book, I wouldn’t be able to survive the pressure from academia and Lebanon’s situation.

1. SHAD HADID is all about food, farts, and friendship. I LOVE every elements of it! It’s an MG book but it fits all ages! I can’t say more than that you need to click on the PRE-ORDER Button! 🥰
2. The setting: it was so authentic and relatable! The way the author shaped the environment of Alexandria and mentioning Lebanon and the beauty of this country from time to time made me tear from time to time.
3. The characters: Shad, the main character, is a spirit in every one us. Or at least, a Lebanese spirit! I mean, Shad loves his belly (Arabic sweets), his friends/family, and his TETA! If you find a Lebanese who doesn’t love at least two of the mentioned above, shoot me! Oh and farts joke! HAHAHA! Not spoiling, you need to read the story 🙃
4. Extra element that I will never forget: FOOD-FOOD-FOOD! This book is all about Levantine food! This is why I’m going to read it again! I fail to count the times I found myself drooling. OH and I read it during Ramadan! So fasting while reading this book was not the best choice I’ve ever made but I survived and enjoyed the extra drooling! 🤣
5. Why this book should be recommended in schools. (At least in Lebanon). I was wondering, why my school back then didn’t add similar books in their curriculum. I was represented in many tropes. This is what as a reader wants from a story. Maybe there is several reason why we were unfortunate, I’ll mention two that came in my mind: 1) There is no MG books written by POC in english/french 15 years ago 2) Our schools are somehow orientalist when it comes to second languages classes.
6. continue- If I was back to middle school and read SHAD, as a Lebanese, this might have changed a lot of things. One of them is turning into a reader at that age. I grew up as a anti-reader because I hated books in the french curricular! They were so not for us. It was always about french characters in a french plot - no diversity- nothing. And yes I identified myself as a reader when I turned 20 (but better late than never).
7. I’m so proud to read this book as a Lebanese reader! I’ve never felt so represented in a MG published book before or even in almost all books written in english! Why reading Harry Potter if SHAD exist? I’m sure there are other MG books as great as SHAD! And Ill be starting reading more MG thanks to George!
8. This is another call to the publishing industry about why we need diverse books written by diverse characters. Not only because many readers will find themselves in them but also you will be creating learning tools for everyone to learn about some aspects about a specific culture.
9. Last but not least, just knew that SHAD has a sequel! And I’m not so ready to all the food George will includ

Thrilling, mysterious, and charming, this is a magical adventure in an environment kids find delight in exploring. I loved the way the story folds passion for Lebanese food and nods to STEM in its magical world of alchemy, and I found our main character Shad's love for his family and his new-found friends truly heartwarming. Robot roosters, ancient libraries, descriptions of delicious cakes... what more could you ask for?

Shad Hadid and the Alchemists of Alexandria by George Jreije is an exciting and fast-paced book for kids of all ages who love magic, baking, and suspense!

Shad Hadid and his Teta are the remaining members of their family in Portland, Maine, having immigrated from Lebanon. While Shad goes to school and takes care of his Teta, he dreams about being a baker. But unbeknownst to him, his family has a history of being alchemists, which he discovers while running from bullies from his school. After training during the summer, he received an invitation to attend a school for alchemy. But when he arrives, it isn’t quite what he expects, and he struggles to fit in, as well as figure out what’s going on!

I really loved this book for the rich cultural touches of Lebanon, from the expressions Shad uses to the descriptions of the food he and Teta eat. It’s exciting to see a world depicted so lovingly, yet in such a way that even readers unfamiliar with Lebanese culture can understand even the parts they may not know when they begin reading the book. The characters are also delightful, especially Hayati, who was easily my personal favorite. The book hits many of the wonderful high notes of a middle grade book, with a tween figuring out his place in the world and becoming part of a group of friends along the way.

If you’ve been looking for a new story featuring a magical academy, look no further than Shad Hadid and the Alchemists of Alexandria! This book will be published October 4, 2022!

The publisher provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for review consideration.

Thank you NetGalley for an advanced review. I felt like this was an immature version of Harry Potter. Sometimes I felt like crying, and other times I laughed out loud. Middle Eastern food and family traditions accompany some mentions of Arabian history. There is a lot of STEM in this high-tech Hogwarts-like school. Abuse, neglect, and loss are touched on. Middle schoolers would identify with this book, as the themes of friendship, bullying, and being true to oneself ring true. I appreciate that this was a clean novel without profanity or anything explicit, although the humor can be crude at times. The only flags are bullying and a side character mentioning his family does not accept him having crushes on other boys--the "gay" word is avoided. While not a total cliffhanger, I can see a sequel on the horizon. I would keep this in the classroom library.

3.5, rounded up. A bit long compared to some other MG novels I’ve read, but still very enjoyable. I especially loved two things:

1) Shad Hadid himself. He’s an immediately endearing character who really does feel like a twelve-year-old boy.

2) The way the book celebrates Shad’s Lebanese background (and Arab culture in general). The vast majority of the characters come from the Arabic-speaking world. And, as another reviewer has mentioned, the author’s passion and love for Lebanese culture shines.

Thanks to the publisher for providing a copy!

Shad Hadid and the Alchemists of Alexandria is an inventive, funny, and exciting adventure of a young alchemist discovering his powers in a land that has forgotten alchemy. When he’s sent to the Alexandria Academy, he stumbles upon a cabal of evil necromancers with a nefarious plot. Not only must he save the alchemical world, but he must also juggle dealing with bullies and making new friends. A perfect blend of magic, humor, and heart.

Shad is so much fun. Lol

Delightful, inspiring, and not skimping on all the fun things you wish you could have done in school, Shad Hadid and the Alchemists of Alexandria is a very, very good book to read for anyone that's down for the count, but not out when it counts.

Please note: I will only be giving my positive comments for this book- not because there were no negatives (there were a few for me), but because the small niggles of things I had issues with are coming from the perspective of an adult. I fully acknowledge that my age group was not the target audience- I cannot on good conscience judge a young readers book negatively for not meeting my adult standards!

A PINCH OF SUGAR

1. Shad himself is a character that people will see themselves in immediately. He's a good kid, with a fun talent to mix things together, and how he improvises and adapts to his situations at such a young age is inspiring. Shad goes through A LOT in this book. He has family issues, he's dealing with a new school and all of its challenges and bullies, and he has to find his tribe... For his own survival. When he does, it's a beautiful thing to see. Shad is the "Little Alchemist who Could", who never gives up (even when it's hard), and I love him for that. He's a kid that everyone can find themselves looking up to.

2. When George Jreije writes a book, HE WRITES A BOOK. The pace did not let up, which made you want to read more. I could taste everything Shad wanted to cook and bake, so much so that my mouth watered and it made me hungry. He puts his characters into situations that are not pleasant- Some of the situations are downright painful and dangerous, and the reader feels that. You go into the book wanting Shad to succeed, but at the same time, you know how badly he can fail. It's not all sunshine and rainbows here; it's a kid who learns as he goes, which meets his readers where they are. I loved it. I loved the Lebanese culture and food mixed in here; as someone who is not very familiar with that part of the world, I loved how Jreije invited us to come along and learn about it, and the science of alchemy. I loved learning something new. And alchemy... Jreije gives a refreshingly modern take on an ancient art that isn't represented in modern entertainment (except in anime/manga). Watching Shad perform it, and how, was so much fun and believable.

3. The way Jreije writes his characters and their relationships with one another is organic and real. Found family is a big theme here, and the members that form it are all characters I adore. One of them I hated, and then grew to love, which is the sign of a great writer. Not everyone can make an absolutely horrible person into a book darling, and how Jreije does it is fantastic.

NO SALT

Shad Hadid and the Alchemists of Alexandria is a great read for kids who want something Percy Jackson adjacent, that has nothing to do with gods and goddesses, and everything to do with a plucky hero, his group of friends, and performing feats that would mystify the average joe. Mr. Jreije, you're a gem of a writer. Keep going! You keep writing more of Shad's adventures, and I will keep reading!

Wow wow..WOWWWW! Another book that made my 22 favs of ‘22 video. This was INCREDIBLE! Shad is such an endearing MC who your heart falls for & you root for all the way. His deep love for his family, his culture, his friends, & for food is so amazing. The combined love of Lebanese food in here mixed with science, mixed with the magical forces of alchemy are brilliantly done, & such a pleasure to read. This school setting is incredible, as is the whole backstory of the Alchemists, & even Shad’s own family backstory. Every detail in this is superb. The incredible grandmother, the Baker, the book, the school, the bell, the necromancers, charms, & so much more. So many relatable issues in here as well. Such as loss, grief, parent abandonment, not fitting in, bullying, & more. I also LOVED what the author did with the “bully” character in here, & how their story developed. Such a different & unique take, & I thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved the evil stepFATHER & stepBROTHER aspect in this. Nice change from females getting all the evil “step” stereotypes lol. Along with Shad, the side characters are all so incredible. Each so important to this friendship & it’s success. Shad makes some amazing friends, & I love them all. Donny is a hoot, lol, & I LOVED the direction his part in the story took. There’s even an awesome cat. So much action, friendship, science-y kinda food-y alchemy magic lol, danger, & so much heart. That ending was everything! Absolutely loved it, & can’t wait for the next book. HIGHLY recommend. STUNNING cover by Khadijah Khatib too.💜

I was able to read an early copy of this book, and it was magical! It gave me the same feeling as when I was 13 years old reading Percy Jackson. This book made me laugh out loud and cry. I had no idea a middle grade novel could allow me to feel such a complex set of emotions. I think people of all ages will love this book, and I can’t wait for everyone to meet Shad!

I wanted to like this book much more than I did. I enjoyed the care and attention the author gives to Lebanese culture. It was how childish the character felt. It didn't feel like they were acting like children, but how an adult feels children think and act.

I got a free e-ARC through the author and Netgalley, this in no way affected this review.

Move over, Percy Jackson, because Shad Hadid just entered the building!

This book was so good and so funny! I don’t usually like to compare books, because each one is different, but I really feel like people who loved PJO will love Shad just as much! He’s such a funny main character and I loved reading the story through his eyes!

I feel like there could have been a little more of a red thread throughout the book, because even though there was a main plot we were following, I did feel like some stuff that happened within the book was just meant to be filler moments.

Also, there were a lot of names to keep track of in the beginning which was a bit confusing at times and I feel like we didn’t need that many characters to keep the story going.

But nevertheless, I really enjoyed this book and I can see this becoming one of my new favourite middle grade series!

This I think might have worked better as a YA than middle grade. Shad has a LOT of trauma induced immediately, good gracious! I did laugh a bit with his use of “fig” as an insult. But the alchemy stuff was hard for me to follow (admittedly that’s a me problem). I very much enjoyed the friendship. And George is SUCH a nice person and great to talk with about his books. I’m not sure I’ll continue with this series but he has a graphic novel he’s working on that I’m ready to eat up with a spoon!!

“What do I do?” I asked the stars. “Give me a sign, or maybe a bowl of vanilla custard.” The stars didn’t give me custard. They didn’t do much other than shine.

NOTE: I was sent an early copy of the book in exchange for a review – this has no bearing whatsoever on my opinion or review of the book.

Before I get into the review, my initial remark is to GO AND PRE-BUY THE BOOK!!!! This book was an utter pleasure to read, and you’ll definitely thank me later :)

SYNOPSIS
The book follows Shad Hadid, a twelve-year-old Lebanese-American boy, who lives with his Teta and never seemed to fit in. When he isn’t avoiding his school bullies, he spends his time hanging out at the local Arabic bakery and cooking wonderful dishes for his Teta, all the while dreaming of opening a bakery of his own one day.

Shad enjoys his life as best as he can, until one day, as he is passing his favourite bakery, he is attacked by a mysterious shadow, which turns out to be a necromancer. After he is saved by Kahem, the baker, Shad learns that his world is no longer as straightforward as it appears: he is, in fact, descended from a long line of alchemists, “science-magicians” who combine myriad ingredients to create potions and spells. Kahem reveals that he can teach Shad some of the basics of alchemy, and so Shad gladly begins to learn about the new world he has been thrust into, as well as his family’s secrets.

After only a little while, he is whisked away to Alexandria Academy, an ancient school that Kahem assures him will usher him along the way to alchemy expertise and resolve many of his yet-unreturned questions about what alchemy means for the world. Upon arriving there, however, Shad finds that all is not as it appears. None of the students or teachers know what alchemy is and – more upsettingly – he still has to endure maths and chemistry lessons, not to mention that there are some familiar faces at school that he just knows will cause him trouble…

When he and his newfound friends uncover a sinister plot, Shad will need all the help he can get to unearth the truth and face the threats looming ahead, even if this means accepting help from unlikely sources.

So, now that I’ve given a synopsis of what the book is about, on with the review!

REVIEW
I’ve been struggling to read for a while now (the result of an ever-shortening attention span and the decision to study English Literature as a degree, whoops), but as soon as I began this book I was immediately drawn into this world - Jreije’s writing style is a breath of fresh air.

In so many ways, this book felt like home, and I can only really agree with Mila (Library of Alexandria archives), who in her review describes this book as a “warm hug” (please read her review, it’s great). As a British-Egyptian living in the UK, so many childhood memories of home were unfurled by the mouth-watering descriptions of Arabic food that flow throughout this book. Jreije truly has a talent for imbuing into his writing the raw nostalgia and joy that food can conjure, and so these descriptions do a great job of sustaining, as well as exemplifying, the warm joy that drives this novel. I haven’t been back to Egypt in a while, so this was a poignant reading experience, but overlayed with happiness – at the very least, I’ll definitely be making the trip to my favourite Lebanese bakery sometime soon! You know a description is good when it makes you crave baklava.

Jreije also does a great job of writing individuals, rather than types – his characters are full of life. Shad is in no way a perfect human, but his fierce love for his family and friends, as well as his passion for baking and his blunt but hilarious sense of humour, all come through beautifully in the interactions he has with those around him. None of the characters are linear, either – the way this world’s individuals change and grow over the course of the novel is truly one of its strengths. I have to say that some of the “villains” of the story did feel a little more calcified in their “evil” traits and less fleshed out than other characters, but the cohesive story and world-building, as well as the thoughtfulness and hilarity of other characters or interactions, definitely make up for this quibble. The arc of the story, as well as general ambience of the book, actually reminded me of Percy Jackson in the best of ways – I really hope we get to see more of Shad’s adventures, because this world has so much potential to expand, and I have faith that Jreije will do a stellar job of this: I also think that this potential will open up some of the more typified baddies' traits. Either way, this book was so much fun to read, and a great reminder of why I love reading :)

Alright, now is your cue to go and pre-order the book (and maybe some baklava nearer the time to complement your reading)!

When he’s not dodging bullies or cooking dinner for his beloved teta, 12-year-old Shad Hadid likes to hang out at the Arabic bakery—the only one in Maine—dreaming of opening his own someday. But a boy loitering in front of his shop window is bad for business, the baker grumps, before chasing Shad away again.

The two bond later, though, when the baker helps Shad fend off a shadowy monster in the alley behind the bakery. It turns out the baker is an alchemist who can combine ingredients into magical charms, potions and elixirs. Shad learns that his late father also was an alchemist and—holy cannoli—Shad’s one, too!

With the baker’s help, Shad, a Lebanese immigrant, soon is traveling to the prestigious Alexandria Academy, the world’s oldest school, to study alchemy. It’s a surprise, to say the least, when Shad finds none of his peers in the 2,223rd class seem to have even heard of alchemy. They believe they’re attending a top STEM school for gifted students, and let’s just say school hasn’t been Shad’s top priority back home. (The novel doesn’t name the desert country where the school is located. Based on his commute, Shad’s roommate guesses they’re in Jordan.)

Unfortunately, compared to his Portland middle school, the Academy’s bullies are meaner and more plentiful, including Shad’s obnoxious stepbrother. Even worse, those shadowy monsters—necromancers—are eager to “convince” Shad to enable their evil plan on the night of the science fair. If Shad cooperates, they’ll spare the lives of his friends and family, but what kind of world would be left?

Debut author George Jreije, also a Lebanese-American, has crafted a thrilling, fast-paced adventure that spotlights Arabic food and culture, alchemy (science + magic + imagination), family, and friendship. As Shad tries to figure out what’s going on, the mysteries pile up.

The story offers a delightful juxtaposition of old and new. The Academy is housed in a sprawling castle that was once known as the Library of Alexandria, the world’s first library. Its 2.7 million volumes include ancient texts from the original collection, believed to have burned in the Second Century. Moreover, only descendants of the school’s original founders are invited to study there. On the other hand, the school abounds with futuristic tech. In gym, students play brutal games of simulated dodgeball, at least one student uses a floating wheelchair, and robo roosters with sharp teeth patrol the halls after curfew.

Middle grade readers will giggle at the abundant fart jokes. (Not to mention the stink bombs, the Vomit Charm, and Diarrhea Mist.) The book is funny and, also, genuinely moving. Shad is sweet and generous, clever and loyal. It’s fun to watch him draw upon his grandmother’s cooking lessons—especially in improvising and substituting ingredients—to excel in alchemy. Despite doubts and feeling like an outsider his entire life, Shad continues to show up as his authentic self—and he encourages and inspires his small band of new friends, including one of his former bullies, to do the same. Readers will cheer this brave hero with a big heart.

This debut will leave you breathless (and hungry) as Jreije puts young Shad Hadid in the toughest of situations early; struggling in school and bullied by schoolmate Sarah while clinging to the remaining threads of his life in Portland, Maine with his aging grandmother after his father's death and his mother's apparent decision to favor her new husband and step children in Lebanon over her son.

However, when a chance encounter reveals a world of alchemy-- a blend of magic, science and... creative baking-- beneath the the reality he knows, Shad and his nemesis Sarah are transported to a legendary school of Alchemy where Shad has a mission to protect ancient secrets. The thing is... no one else at the school can seem to remember alchemy exists. So even as Shad makes unlikely friends and uncovers secrets, he is in more danger every day and finds it harder to know who to trust.

Like the shifting sands of the desert, this story is in constant motion, reshaping as the reader and Shad both unearth new details as the danger gets closer. The author's own culture and experiences are infused in every element of the book and his narrative recipe is as imaginative as any of Shad's alchemical creations.

Holy Cannoli! With magic, action, fantastic character growth, and delicious desserts, Shad Hadid and the Alchemists of Alexandria by George Jreije has it all and is such a fun adventure from cover to cover. Jreije creates a character that every reader will resonate with; Shad is hysterical with snarky humor and a strong will; he is loveable right from the start. This story had me clutching my sides and trying not to laugh too loud as I stayed up through the night reading page after page. Only Jreije could write a fart joke and make you hungry by describing a delicious Lebanese desert on the following page. This story follows Shad through unbelievable hardships, dealing with bullies, family trauma, and losing loved ones. However, he manages to find himself and make new friends along the way, which makes him such an inspiring character. The way George Jreije describes the ingredients in each mixture, bringing the alchemy alive, makes me wish I was battling the necromancers at Alexandria Academy. Shad’s story is perfect for anyone who loves an underdog, magical alchemy battles, or laughing until it hurts. I cannot wait to see where Shad’s story goes from here.

A huge thank you to George Jreije for the chance to read and review this ARC.

Holy cannoli, this book is a delight! I mean, it stars a protagonist who says things like "holy cannoli" when faced with evil necromancers and shape-shifting shadow monsters. How can you not love a character like that?

Shad Hadid is a twelve-year-old boy with a penchant for baking (and eating!) Arabic pastries. Shortly after his grandmother's death, he discovers that his late father was actually a powerful alchemist— and Shad might be one as well. Soon he finds himself swept off to a distant alchemist's academy, where he expects to learn everything there is to know about his ancestors' skills. But he arrives to find necromancers lurking around every corner— and no alchemists to be found. Something about Alexandria isn't quite right; it's up to Shad to fix it.

As I said before, Shad Hadid is a brilliant main character; charismatic, compassionate, and funny. I loved watching him learn about his family history, forging strong friendships along the way. This book will be an amazing find for kids who are into secret magical schools, desserts, or both.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an eARC of this debut novel coming out on October 4th.

There’s a lot of buzz surrounding SHAD HADID AND THE ALCHEMISTS OF ALEXANDRIA, so I was happy to get a chance to interview the author for MG Book Village (look for it on September 30th) and get an eARC of it to read. It’s a fantasy story about a Lebanese boy named Shad who discovers his family descends from a line of alchemists who have all but died out. He is sent to the Alexandria Academy with the hope of learning how to develop his talents. Still, his arrival uncovers secrets and evil forces determined to lead him in a dark and nefarious direction.

I can’t remember reading a story with an Arab main character, especially one in the role of a hero, so I think this is an incredibly important story for readers who have not seen themselves in this light. I loved reading a story steeped in culture (with such delicious-sounding food!) mixed with elements such as alchemy and necromancy. I recommend this story to kids who enjoy books from Rick Riordan Presents, and I can’t wait to read the sequel and see what happens with Shad and his friends next.

"An imagination like yours can get you into trouble."

Shad Hadid is a 12 year old many of my students will identify with. Being raised by a grandparent because of unfortunate events with his parents, Shad takes care of Teta as much as she takes care of him. Lots of alone time allows him to discover his strengths as well as his weaknesses. He doesn't have the easiest time making friends and he realizes he's not the strongest student. Despite all this, he's chosen to attend the Alexandria Academy.

Alongside Shad at the academy is his former friend/current bully. Will they finally put aside their differences or is her spot at the bully table permanent? Shad has much to discover, for instance what is his family connection to the academy, how to make and maintain friendships, and why doesn't anyone at this school know what alchemy is?

Jreije does a phenomenal job using humor and action to keep the reader invested in what happens to Shad. I look forward to learning more about Sarah, Rey and the rest of Shad's friends.

I finished SHAD HADID AND THE ALCHEMISTS OF ALEXANDRIA by George Jreije and holy cannoli is it good! The unique, loveable characters! The epic food fight! Allllll the food (omg I wanted so many delicious things)! And, of course, the perfectly placed fart jokes! 😂 Loved it!!
Shad is a good kid who loves his grandma and wants to make the world a better place through baking sweets. When the school bully chases him into a dangerous situation, a stranger comes to his aid and teaches him that things aren't always what they seem. Shad has to rise up against bullies and the nasty forces trying to take over his school while trying to figure out why no one remembers anything he tells them.
George, the author, did an excellent line creating a compassionate, funny, family-oriented male MC. I love that he wants to bake and that we have the opportunity to learn little bits of his culture (especially all of the foods!). Can't wait to read the next one.

This book is like the best pastries—sweet, rich, and leaving you wanting more. Shad is bottomlessly genuine and full of heart, providing the perfect gooey center for this layered, buttery... Sorry, that metaphor is falling apart faster than a two-day-old croissant.

Readers looking for laughs and excitement will get a big kick out of Shad's adventures. I enjoyed getting a small taste of Lebanese culture and mythology, and the vivid descriptions of food and sweets brought me back to my little apartment in Skokie, IL and the wonderful smells that would seep in from the kitchens of our Iranian, Syrian, Afghani, and Lebanese neighbors (to list only a few!)

I would highly recommend this book for kids who like their stories fun, quirky, and adventurous, and for anyone looking to experience new sights, sounds, tastes, and smells.

I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

OH MY GODDDDD!! This book was so much fun!! What a fresh, entertaining, action packed debut full of friendship, magic, mouthwatering pastries, and heartfelt moments! I enjoyed every second of it!

Shad is such a determined and strong protagonist! He goes through so much and even so keeps looking ahead and never gives up. His gang is a very fun one and I especially liked the bond he had with Sarah and Rey. The little bits of Lebanese(&arabic) culture sprinkled into it were insightful and the cuisine made my mouth water hahaha. The alchemy magic system gave the story a unique spin and the ending ties up things nicely and leaves enough for a future sequel. I think it's a wonderful debut and I can't wait to see what else Shad and his friends get up to! It deserves all the hype I'm sure it'll get among middle grade readers!!

*Thanks to the lovely George Jreije, Netgalley, and HarperCollins Children's Books for the e-arc*
