I am reading this right now. My mother found a copy of it from an online used bookseller. This was written by a neighbor of ours in Costilla, and it takes place in rural Pennsylvania. Based on a year of her life in the 1940's. Interesting book. It was made into a film as well. Joanna Crawford has since passed away, but I remember visiting her at her place in Costilla, called Gatano Ranch.

Here is the beginning-

"I had been pushed around all my life. When my father was living he and my mother lived on a gaff-rigged cutter off the coast of Massachusetts, and we were always going somewhere for the winter. My father was an Irishman, tall and melancholy, with too much wildness in him, like all good Irishmen. He had some money, inherited, and we lived off that. My mother was an artist. When my father died the year I was nine my mother and I went on living on the boat, but one day she said it was giving her a claustrophobic feeling so she gave up and sold it, and took me to the Hebrides with her to find her soul."
