A modern time slip of power, greed and deceit. Where some people will stop at nothing to get what they want, regardless of what may come.
But with strong, determined women, the past is always waiting…
For what they seek, is seeking them.
Present Day When best friend Dani suggests a break, Jess jumps at the chance to finish recuperating away from the shadows of the place she no longer thinks of as home. Excited to return to the seaside town of childhood holidays and cherished memories, Jess couldn’t be happier. Until the desperate plea of a voice calls to her. A faraway voice connected to the amber pendant she knows she has to buy. But as the voice evolves, and images manifest, she remains oblivious to the motives behind Jason and Nat’s interest in her. Conflicted by her judgements, she finds herself alone as she attempts to discover who is trying to speak to her and why. But in her mission to solve the connection between the voice and the amber pendant, she travels a dangerous path littered with lies, deceit, and greed. One where the secrets of not just this past are waiting to surface.
Bronze Age Norfolk With the passing of her mother shrouded in mystery and her home lost to torrential floods, Amara has no choice but to leave with her father for their new settlement. Not long after her arrival, the womenfolk grow wary of her. The chieftain is watching her and the constraints of this strange land leave her isolated and afraid. In her bid to find answers, she turns to the gift entrusted to her care by her mother. The gift she believes no one knows she has. The gift that now brings her disjointed visions. When a warning given by old Ambrose matches that of her insights, she seeks to uncover its meaning, discovering not only the truth of her mother’s passing but the power of her own arcane gifts. And the evil fate that awaits her. If she is to survive, she knows she must protect herself in the only way possible. By creating a sigil. A sigil carved into amber.
An intriguing story flowing between the Bronze age and modern day. Timeslip isn't a genre I often read, but I found myself drawn in. I enjoyed the character of Amara and the trials of living in an age we still know little about. Jess's story was more of a modern crime mystery, but I thought the way the two threads were drawn together was good, with tension building towards the end. I think this would make an excellent television mystery.
Amber follows Jess in the present day who alongside her best friend goes on a trip which turns out to be a trip of a lifetime. A voice soon starts calling out to her and Jess finds herself drawn to it and the voice’s plea. When Jess finds an amber pendant in a shop, she feels a undeniable power coming from it and feels a connection to it similar to the voice she has heard. The story also takes us back to the Bronze Age where Amara is forced to move to a new settlement but she finds it difficult to settle in and starts having visions. Both determined to find out what this all means, they both find themselves on a path of discovery and one filled with many dangers.
Written in first person, we see the majority of the story through Jess but we also see some of the story from Amara’s POV.
We see both of their feelings and thoughts and without spoiling the story too much, I really felt especially for Amara, she seemed like a warm hearted person. We learn a lot about her background and her parents. She had to deal with a lot of loss in the past which was hard to read about. She definitely has had a hard life but despite the pain she’s in, she seems very strong willed.
Filled with mystery and an air of intrigue, especially surrounding the amber pendant, what the amber can do and why it was calling out to Jess. There was a few things I definitely didn’t see coming at all. Its a fairly quick and easy read and the past and present all tie in quite nicely too.
If you’re a fan of time travelling stories with strong female characters then you should definitely check this one out. Amber is a wonderful fantasy adventure.
Magic, myth and history, combined with dual timelines that collide always make for an interesting book. There’s something intrinsically human about stories that link our ancestors with our present selves.
For the most part, Amber has a good plot. It begins with intrigue and mystery, providing us with a sense of foreboding as we read on. We know Jess and Amara are linked somehow and we know both are threatened by something. It’s a compelling start and the author has done her research.
Unfortunately the writing is not quite as strong as the idea. The book is short, but if one were to remove the pleonasms and excessive description the pace would dramatically improve. The author is clearly a visual person, but Mark Twain had a point about adjectives.
The edits will also provide the author with extra pages to add in a few missing elements (such as why shortening their names is a nod to their parents) and flesh out the final chapters which feel rushed and don’t quite provide the impact expected.
The book shows promise and my rating takes into consideration the fact that this is a proof awaiting further amends, but sadly it isn’t quite there yet.
I adore a good time slip novel and this one had me captivated from the first few chapters. I was so engrossed with the gentle unfolding of the story that I found myself reading into the small hours.
Amber is told from the POVs of Jess in the modern day and Amara in Bronze Age Norfolk. I liked these two strong female characters and enjoyed discovering how their stories are entwined. I would have loved to hear more from Amara's timeline and from the side character of Ambrose.
You can tell that a lot of research went into the chapters that were set in the Bronze Age. I enjoyed the atmosphere created in the descriptions of the settlement and really felt the claustrophobic environment that was Amara's world.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys time slip/historic fiction. It is filled with mystery and intrigue not to mention some really good twists.
I was massively enticed by the blurb. Anything steeped in history grabs me in straight away. It was very clear that whilst telling Amara's POV from the Bronze Age, everything had been researched so deeply and I loved the contrast to modern times. That being said, the way the stories and POV's linked was done so well and brought about the similarities in the characters vulnerabilities. * I loved Jess and Dani's relationship to begin with and I really liked Jason and Nat, but there are some huge twists!
A well written book 🥰
Thank you to @instabooktours and @sharronlmiller_ for my gorgeous copy 😘
I really loved this book, I was hooked from the beginning and found it hard to put down. Sharron L Miller has a great, easy to read intriguing style of writing. I really liked the main character Jess, and again Sharron writes in such a way that you could easily connect to and relate to what was/has happened to her. The end of the book was fantastic, it was a huge twist that I did not see coming. There is also some history of Norfolk thrown in, which was interesting to read and then see in the author’s notes which were real. I Would highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good timeslip/ dual timeline book. Cannot wait to read her first book.
Definitely a new favourite author for me. I absolutely loved this story. Plenty of twists and turns to keep you captivated.
The story is told in two different timelines and follows the story of Amara and Jess. I love a book with short chapters and found it easier to follow. Absolutely loved how the two timelines are linked and tied up nicely at the end.
I think the descriptive writing style was a major plus point for the storyline and found it helpful to picture the scenes.
Definitely a captivating read and highly recommend it.
Historical fiction is not usually my top pick for reading but the blurb was so enticing I had to give this book a try. This story did not grab me from page one but the more I read the more invested I became. I liked the was the characters tangled together despite the many years difference between their stories but I enjoyed the descriptive way the setting was described most of all as I love to travel and Norfolk has been on my list of possible landings for some time now. I felt like I was there the more in-depth I became and that made me enjoy this read all the more.
‘A modern time slip of power, greed and deceit. Where some people will stop at nothing to get what they want, regardless of what may come. But with strong, determined women, the past is always waiting… For what they seek, is seeking them.’
Amber is a story told from a dual perspective; that of Amara, a newly bereaved girl, from Bronze Age Norfolk living in a settlement where the chieftain has an intensely close eye on his people, Amara is beginning to feel isolated and afraid. We also hear from Jess, a young woman who has recently been broken into and is left physically injured and emotionally fraught, Jess’s best friend has taken her for a couple of weeks away on the Norfolk coast to try to recuperate.
The premise of Amber had me intrigued; I was keen to discover how our two protagonists are linked and found the setting that is so richly steeped in history to be fascinating. While reading Amber, the authors passion for this story is almost palpable and it’s clear that the book has been very well researched.
I did find that at times the language was a bit too descriptive and this did slightly grate on me. I also though that the narrative voice of Jess was very repetitive. I feel that this book would benefit from being heavily edited. However I did find myself very interested towards the end and the ending itself to be very satisfying.
Thanks so much to @instabooktours and @sharronlmiller for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was such an interesting read and I know it has been a highly anticipated read by myself and everyone on tour. @instabooktours, you’ve done it again with the amazing tours!
I thought this was a brilliant read, excellently written and captivated the readers. It was not my typical read but never once did that falter my attention from this book.
I loved how we jumped back and forth from a modern time to in the past and the connections we were presented with the characters.
You have written such a flawless pierce of work and should be very proud of yourself. I am over the moon to have been on tour with you Sharron, thank you.
I like books where you have characters over two different time periods. In this one we have Amber and Amara linked together by a pendant. Jess is in present day and Amara is in Bronze Age times. Jess needs time to recover from a recent trauma so decides some time away would be good. Lots of atmosphere in both timelines and great Bronze Age descriptions.
This book revolves around the lives of two women separated by time. The whole story was really well written, so much so I couldn't put it down . Can't wait to read more from this author
This isn't my usual book/genre but having read 'The Time has come', another book by this author and loving it, I jumped at the chance.
I really like how this author writes, her style is enticing and exciting.
I like the character descriptions and other descriptions throughout this book.
This is a wonderfully mystical book with a then and now aspect and the main 'now' character is trying to find answers about something she has in her possession and it's really interesting.
Amber follows the stories of Jess and Amara, split over two different perspectives from the modern and the Bronze Age, respectively. Amara has recently lost someone close to her and is starting to feel isolated and alone in the Norfolk settlement in which she lives. Jess is desperate for an escape after a home burglary has left her injured and feeling afraid and so travels to the Norfolk coast seeking time to rest.
Historical fiction isn't always my preferred genre of reading but this one sounded so intriguing, especially seeing as we get a modern story arc as well. I found the plot to be well written; there was lots of mystery and intrigue which kept me turning the page and it is clear that a vast amount of research has been done by the author in writing this book. The chapters are short and flowed well as they shifted between the timelines.
The dialogue wasn't quite to my taste; and so I felt myself pulled out of the story in parts but that is just my own personal preference and I think many people would enjoy it. The descriptive elements of the writing were done well and allowed me to really picture the scene. After reading quite a few fast-paced books recently, it was nice to be able to sit and enjoy a slower unfolding of events instead and I did enjoy the twists revealed throughout.
A new author I found via IG and a book tour, I was intregued by the idea of this time slip novel and was not disappointed. So much so in fact after reading this I jumped straight into another book by the same author.
Loved how the story unfolded over the two times and the connections of the two female characters in both modern day and the bronze age. It's one of those books where you're just saying to yourself 'one more chapter' to see what happens next.
It's more a gentle unfolding of the story, rather than an action packed race, so a perfect easy, intreguing read. The twists and reveals throughout keep you hooked, the characters strong and the ending is definitely dramatic.
