Amidst the dangers of war torn Afghanistan, an army officer finds himself irresistibly drawn to another soldier. The forbidden attraction shakes him to the core and plunges him into a bitter inner conflict.
But the battle against these new and disturbing desires is not the only war he must fight. A patrol goes missing, under suspicious circumstances, while on routine surveillance. The subsequent media interest, and the shocking truth as it unfolds, challenges his belief system and rocks the comfortable world he grew up in.
Sunday morning I found an email with this book attached with the subject Review Request. The few times that I've received a request to review a book I've first received a nice email with a few details asking if I'm interested. This time, the email had the book attached and just the standard blurb and links to the book's site.
I read the above blurb and the Gay Male Erotica genre tag and it sounded interesting. A new (to me) author and publisher, it sounded like a book I'd enjoy. As it turns out, it really wasn't.
First off, while there is m/m sex between the two main characters there is just as much m/f sex in the story. The main character is Jay, a Canadian Army officer serving in Afghanistan, who finds himself away from his wife and starting to develop a surprising interest in a fellow soldier. As much as he tries to deny it to himself when given the opportunity Jay has sex with Darren.
Weeks later, while waiting to be sent back home, Jay has sex with a female prostitute and is happy to realize that he's not a homosexual but in fact is bisexual. Called back to the war zone when Darren and some other soldiers go missing, Jay is once again caught up in his attraction. Again, the men have sex and Jay has to deal with his guilt at cheating on his wife with a man. To prepare himself for going back to her and to somehow prove his sexuality to himself he has sex with another female prostitute.
Back home things aren't much better. Supposedly in love with Darren, he still has sex with his wife and never lets on to her that he doesn't really love her anymore. Time passes and Darren comes back in to the picture. Again he cheats on his wife, feels guilty, starts drinking heavily and ultimately finds himself in a strip club.
At this point in the story I'm already upset at whoever wrote the blurb for this book. However, the scene in the strip club almost made this a DNF but I hate giving up on a book and forced myself to keep reading. The way Jay looks at it the lap dancer really wanted it but in my opinion at best it's a case of dubious consent if not outright rape. Adding to Jay's actions to make it worse is his attitude and hurtful words.
Jay waffles between Darren and his 'normal' life with his wife until the choice is taken from him. I found him totally unlikable and his actions reprehensible. There were other plots in the story but nothing in the book was enough to get me over my dislike of the book's supposed hero. In the end, the guys get their happy ending but by then I really couldn't have cared less.
Overall I found this book disappointing. Although well written I didn't like the main characters, especially Jay, and I wasn't happy when despite a tag of Gay Male Erotica and no mention in the blurb half of the sex was m/f. That's not what I'm interested in reading and it's something I think should have been disclosed. The book should be labeled Bisexual Erotica instead of Gay Male Erotica. This is not a book I'll ever reread and one that I don't recommend.

Leaving the war in Afghanistan and getting home to his wife Kerry is all Lt. Jay Sutherland has on his mind. That is until he is called back to help locate a missing platoon. Life gets more interesting when one of the men that has been reported missing is a "good" friend. In fact they become more than friends and Lt Sutherland has to choose, between the life he left behind or the life of hookers and his gay lover. What will he do? How will he manage a life of secrets and lies? Torment was a real page-turner with a story line that keep me interested."
