I came to Penfell Heights to escape my cruel alpha—not to find a new one. But fate has other plans for my wolf and I.

After years in a forced marriage to the alpha of the Moon Falls pack, I escaped with my life—but barely. Now I’m broke, on the run, and being hunted, but at least I’m free. I need a job, a place to live, and time to heal—and when I end up in Penfell Heights, a tiny fishing town with suspicious townsfolk and protected by a motorcycle club made up of bear shifters called the Blood Brotherhood, I think maybe I’ve found exactly that.

Flint, the club alpha, seems willing to offer me that same protection. Why, I don’t know exactly, but it can’t be out of anything other than the kindness of his heart. After all, he’s a bear shifter and I’m a wolf—and I’m not looking for love, or anything else. It doesn’t matter if Flint’s handsome face and huge—muscles make me feel things I’ve never felt before, or if he calls to me in a way that not even my wolf alpha ever could. It doesn’t matter if he makes my heart race.

I’m on the run. Penfell Heights is supposed to be a stop on the way, not my forever. But fate might have different ideas. And when my past catches up to me, it might be Flint who turns out to be my savior, after all.

Flint is a full length standalone and the first entry in the Blood Brotherhood series. If you like sexy bear shifters who will do anything to protect their mates, a strong wolf shifter heroine, motorcycle clubs, and a small town with plenty of heat, you’ll love this series!

Oof, I really wanted to like it.
Unfortunately I found it to be way over-written.
Paragraphs upon paragraphs of waffling.
I was bored while reading, even when the H and h were interacting.
Plus I thought Flint was a total dick to his not-really fiancé, the way he was leading her on.
Layla was an OK character, but left much to be desired. 1) for someone bent on survival, she was surprisingly reluctant to ask for help. 2) there was no background justification for her incredible selfless personality, that is, that she would rather face her horrible ex-mate all on her own because she doesn't want to bring destruction on the bear's small town, but we get zero indication WHY she is like that. It felt like a plot device to create artificial tension.
What I liked: Roxy Roxy and more Roxy. Yes to all scenes involving Roxy.
I think someone else might enjoy this book more than me, so I wouldn't pass it up, instead I would suggest reading the first few chapters and seeing if you like the way it is written.

Omegaverse I guess?

It's still written, even if the characters are a little stereotypical. However, if I never have to read the word 'slick' in sexual terms again, I'll be a happy person.

Well worth the read

I like paranormal, and I like MC books, so having them combined was perfect. This storyline started strong and really developed into a wonderfully engaging read. The characters were strong and carasmatic, and even the enemy characters were well developed, which was good to see as sometimes they were forgotten in other books I've read. I am looking forward to reading the next book .

3.5 ✨

I might be over rating this bc let me tell ya I read a lot of dumpster fires this month.

But it was actually enjoyable if you like shifter romance.

Had a good mix of everything and I’ll be adding the next book from the series to me TBR. But I will be mad if Marilyn is the female mc in it 🙄

I enjoyed this book but I felt like it could have been like 50-100 pages shorter. It is a slow burn but its also an omega verse so mates and such are a thing and its very obvious that Flint and Layla are true mates. And usually things tend to happen pretty quick but it just drags with both of them making ridiculous excuses the entire book. The initial hang up is that he is a Bear shifter and she is a Wolf but that issue is discussed and solved the first time it is brought up with True mates being a soul bond and as long as they are shifter no matter the species you can be true mates. But the same argument is brought up like three or four more times for no reason and the same answer is given each time. Then of course Flint feels bad because he is "engaged" to this other girl in his pack? but like feels nothing for her, and then proceeds to lie and cheat even more to her than he had in the past. Because you know its okay to lie, cheat, and lead on someone if you feel nothing for them instead of I don't know growing up and having an adult conversation with her.

I really liked Layla and the group of women she befriends and I really like Blade. I was annoyed that Flint allowed others to treat Layla badly for so long even though she was his mate. I'm just not a fan of Flint unfortunately. He kept convincing Layla to stay even though she kept telling him no and she wanted to leave. And then everyone is mad at her for staying and causing problems for the community since she is on the run. but he never stands up for her on that front until the end. Then her crazy ex finds her way to fast its kind of frustrating that they found her so fast because that is a huge plot point with her running away.

I have been in a reading slump for so long, started countless books and nothing could pull me out of it. Until this. It was such easy reading, you were pulled along by the plot and characters, there was no slow moments. Fun and sexy. Everything I needed to fix my slump.

I had to up the rating of this to a 5 cause months later I'm still thinking about how amazing this was!

Layla is a wolf shifter who escapes her alpha who forced her to mate him. He is cruel and abusive and she's hurt when she escapes. She finds herself in Penfell heights just to stop long enough to get something to eat and rest for a little while. But things take a strange turn when she meets the alpha there and has feelings for him right away.

Flint is the alpha of Penfell Heights and realizes after he meets Layla that she's his mate. So even though he knows that she's in danger and probably running from something or someone and that might put his pack in danger, he talks her into staying in town and taking a job.

The only problem is the pack isn't very welcoming and they really don't like strangers so they weren't very nice to her. I really didn't like most of them. The other problem is Flint is part of a motorcycle club that might be doing some illegal things. Flint is also a bear shifter so the pack is worried that wolf and bear shifters might not get along all that well.

I didn't really like Layla or Flint and I really didn't like most of the townspeople who were less than understanding. Layla had been abused but she jumps right into feelings and a relationship with Flint because her body responded to him? No. Plus she stayed in a place that she was clearly unwelcome? Again, no. She should have left and gone someplace else. Flint kept stringing Marilyn along even after meeting Layla? No thank you. These people were not likable.

When Layla's past some knocking it brings danger with it.

The first half of the book was so slow and even though I can read a book really fast this one took me a few days because the story was just lagging for me. The better part of the book was the ending since things really ramped up and got better.

DNF @ 58%

The storyline wasn't bad but the ML and FL's behaviour put me off.

Flint is made out to be this nice guy but he is essentially cheating on his fiancée with the FMC.

I don't mind OW drama in books when it's clear that no commitments have been made, but there is literally a whole scene in the early chapters where Flint promises to be true to Marilyn and then immediately goes and does the opposite. I hated that for her.

I liked the heroine a lot less after she throws herself at him, knowing full well he's engaged. She feels some guilt, sure, but she keeps going after him.

An example of the kind of rogue behaviour from Layla to Marilyn that pissed me off:

“You scared someone’s going to steal him if you look away from him for a second?”

Um, how is she the heroine in this scenario?? Layla was 100% the Other Woman in this relationship, and I didn't like it.

Some reviews have mentioned it wasn't really cheating because the ML wasn't into Marilyn but I fully disagree.

If it wasn't cheating, then he wouldn't have needed to apologise to Marilyn at all. We, the readers, only know he doesn't want to be with her because we're in his head. To everyone else, he's engaged. And a cheater.

This book also had tons of Body Betraying Syndrome (she literally goes into heat the first time she meets him and leaves icky scent trails everywhere she goes) which just made me so embarrassed.

I honestly don't know how she could stay there after that. I'd have been out the doooooor.

So yeah. Not the kind of romance I like. It might work for others but not for me.

The couple: Flint and Layla

Romance trope: shifter
Series: The Blood Brotherhood
Length: 392 pages

Plot: Layla is on the run from a cruel alpha and she ends up in a strange town where outsiders are neither encouraged nor accepted. But the alpha of this town, Flint, wants her to stay, even if he can't explain why. But he already has a (kinda) fiance and Layla isn't sure she's ready for another alpha. Fate may have a different idea though.

Commentary: I enjoyed this story, although I wasn't expecting a fiance in the mix! She was a piece of work, that's for sure, and I was so glad when Layla started getting her sass back. In the end, she and Flint were perfect for each other and I loved when Flint finally gave in and made things official. And Roxy! What a great character.

You couldn't pay me to read the next book though, no matter how much I liked this one. If it were only one distasteful character, I would read it, but I hated both characters, and I'm sure there is redemption (and they seem absolutely suited to each other) but I don't think I care how it happens. I feel really bad about that, but eww to that couple. I would like Blade's story and Roxy's as well, though.

Next book in the series: Slash: A Bear Shifter Biker Romance

Main plot was good and interesting characters but 3 stars for the sole reason I hate cheating or leading people on. The plot point on the H's side was that he had already been arranged since like childhood with another woman and he had lead her and their parents on of their eventual marriage but had dragged it out because "it wasn't the right time yet." I mean he even tried to get it on with the OW right before he tells our h that she's the one!? Like the h even saw him with the OW! His excuse was that he wanted to make sure that they really didn't have any chemistry LIKE. EXCUSE ME SIR?! You already had sex with the h yesterday and today you tryna get it on with OW? 🙄 like no just no
While I'm aware that technically he was not officially together with the OW the implications was there and their whole community took it as a sure thing. AND the H promised her multiple times thar her concerns were not substantial! Also I understand the timeline of when our h arrived and officially got with the H was very short. Though this was a concern throughout most of the novel so my patience was running thin to nonexistent

Layla is on the run. Running from her wolf pack and her abusive husband, the alpha.
Flint along with his bear pack knew immediately when a stranger wandered into his territory. Then he's face to face with a scared, broken, injured, dirty woman with no shoes who looks like she's running from someone. His bear tells him to protect her. He knows he will have to let his arranged fiancee aware of the decision he just made.
With a new room and a job Layla now feels freedom from the first time.
When unscented visitors start prowling around his territory Flint feels big trouble is just around the corner.
With a war brewing Layla has to reveal her secret in order to save one of the pack members.
Action packed drama, mystery, suspense and a dose of love.

Layla (wolf) is on the run from her Alpha. She has been abused ever since he killed her father and took her for his mate. Layla ends up in a little small toen that doesn’t take kindly to strangers. But for some reason, Flint (Alpha Bear) just can’t seem to let Layla leave. Flint is supposed to be engaged to Marilyn, but she doesn’t do anything for him.

Attraction on both sides, trying to fight the feelings, but when you meet your fated mate, there is nothing you can do! Friction between the alpha and his second, a very funny bathroom scene, and seeing that little green monster adds to this story. Great start to this series and I love the town, the people, and the little nuggets we get about the other characters. I look forward to reading more about these characters and see what can happen in this little, small town. I am voluntarily leaving a review.

Standard romance tropes, characters were well developed and captivating, and storyline was pretty good!

I thought the way Flint declared his true mate was a little clunky and came out strange in the storyline. I felt like the author was building up all this tension, realized her book was going to be too long so quickly had to change directions. There was also some inconsistency with the town dynamics. In earlier chapters, the elders are the true rulers of the town but in later chapters Flint establishes his dominance and basically becomes the king. But there wasn’t enough build up or character change for that to happen. For how much detail this book had, it was strange to see so many important plot points underdeveloped.

Skimmed the majority of this.

This is a LOT of angsty OW drama, much less actual story that could’ve been written instead. You get tiny snippets of them being a gang and selling major quantities of drugs and having turf wars, which all would’ve been much cooler to read than what the focus is. The focus isn’t even on their romance, it’s another woman you have to read about constantly. Saving grace was the gore and blood shed you finally get at the end. That was a nice fight I guess. I’m not reading any more of this series. The shifters are way overly prejudiced against each other as well and it’s just weird and unnecessary.

Layla and Flint meet when she finds herself in his town and in his bar. His bear is on alert because there is something about Layla that has drawn him to her. Layla is on the run from her pack. The alpha killed her father and made her his slave. When she escaped, she was determined to never be a part of that pack or his slave again. As she and Flint get to know each other their feelings grow between them, and he realizes that she is his true mate. But her past has found them. Will Flint and his pack be able to keep her safe? This exciting story kept me glued to the pages! I am volunteering to leave a re-view for an ARC of this book.

3.75 stars: I would do 4 stars except for the plot and content. There wasn’t a lot of depth to the plot. At least she came out with what is is early enough to not frustrate the readers.

The easy acceptance of Flint and Layla’s mate bond never ceases to amaze me. But when you know you know. I know it’s just part of the process between shifters, even ones of a different species.

I was surprised at how quickly she was found and the lack of explanation on the process. You would think that the number of miles she traveled would have made a difference.

The next book might get read when bored.

Flint is a great way to start off a series and combines several fan-favorite tropes like protector/alpha, fated mates, MC, and wraps them all up in a great paranormal romance. Layla's on the run and desperate for the chance to start over. Meanwhile, Flint is trying to bring his family into a more prosperous future and is ready to make necessary sacrifices for that to happen. What they couldn't account for is just how well best-laid plans go. Between Layla's past and Flint's duty to the club, finding their happily ever after may not be as easy as it seems.
The author does a good job of establishing some of the more pertinent characters and sets book 2 up to be downright explosive!

Could've been good

This author can write but the characters she writes about are not very likable. The FMC in this story has multiple personalities, one minute a victim, the next punching someone out. Not very believable or defined. The MMC was wishy washy and didn't make up his mind until the last half of the story. This is trying to be a shifter MC story and it just doesn't work. None of the characters are likable, most are just hostile or sleazy. Shame, because EK can write just not this type of story.

Shifters

I enjoyed this story a lot. Its different but its still a romance. There is quite a bit going on in this book. Layla ran away from Zagan. He treated her terribly bad beat her killed her parents. She's a wolf shifter Zagan was her alpha. Layla wasn't able to go into heat with her alpha. That all changed when she met Flint. It was such a great read. Onto the next book I can't wait to know what the Beck is up with slash.

An amazing story, that grabs you and never let’s go! You feel every emotion, all the pain, hatred, resentment, rage and terror as you take this journey beside them! It has everything needed to keep you reading! The characters are beautiful, bigger than life, bears and wolves, good and evil! Root for your heroes and guard your heart in this one!

Eh.

I wasn't vibing with this one, even though I liked the start of the book where Layla escapes and finds her way to Flint's small town. But it was downhill for me since I felt like Flint was being very shitty towards his "not-fiancee" and the infidelity just isn't my thing. I did finish the story, so there's that but honestly, it was a little sour in my mouth.

Ehh this was an ok read. Didn’t really hold my interest and I didn’t like how the mmc bounce from one woman to his other woman. How his mate caught him bouncing and just overlooked it. Just so he could make a point and see who he wanted. Don’t know why she was OK staying in a place that she was completely unwelcome to. just not my type of read.

It was cute! An easy read, the pace of the book was nice and I enjoyed the story!

I really disliked the two characters who star in the second book so not sure I’ll continue with the series but we’ll see how I feel in the future 🤷🏻‍♀️
