Maurice is an art student majoring in photography, and has become so invested in his craft he built his own darkroom inside his house. But his murderous lifestyle gets flipped upside-down when he encounters a photo of the most beautiful man he’s ever seen.

Kenneth is a registered nurse living day by day a dreary, monotonous life. When his sister tells him someone from her class wants him to be their model for the next school project, Kenneth takes a chance by trying something new.

Little do the two men realize that meeting each other will set their hearts on fire, falling madly in love, changing their lives forever.

"It's like seeing a small piece of death in someone that's living."

All Tomorrow's Photos is the story of Maurice, a bold and charismatic photographer and Kenneth, an homebody sweet nurse! Their paths cross when Maurice sees Kenneth in a photo one day displayed by a fellow student, Kennth's sister. From there, he has to not only meet him but capture him for his own project.

Maurice, however, lives a double life. By day he is a student majoring in photography and working part-time at a department store; by night, he goes out picking up hitchhikers and creating his 'art'. He manages to keep that part of him secret as he gets closer and falls in love with Kenneth. We also get a second parallel storyline regarding the investigation of the disappearance and killings of these women. As people in the area became aware and suspicious, I was curious to see how it would play out for Maurice.

I always enjoy stories with characters with double lives and dangerous men who find their "one". I liked how caring and sweet Maurice was towards Kenneth. He opened up to him about his past, and he never judged or denied his feelings towards his family.

I also really enjoyed how Genesee went into detail regarding photography. The camera, techniques, the process, especially of the 70s! It was educational for me, and it was nice getting that in-depth view of Maurice's obsession and love for it.

Kenneth! Seeing him get swept by Maurice, this odd, handsome man with only eyes for him, was adorable. I love their connection so much; their conversations, at times, were very idiosyncratic and amusing. It was a double sexual awakening as Maurice realized he was gay and Kenneth bisexual. The sex, while not numerous, was well-written and steamy. Also, seeing them figure out a balance between their relationship regarding how they can be in public was saddening. 70s homophobia and the dangers to one's life for being out were very present and real, so they knew they couldn't be openly affectionate while outside.

My only issues would be some of the dialogue and word choices other than that I really enjoyed this debut work from S.S. Genesee! I don't know much about the 70s, so getting a MM story set in that era was exciting for me! While this story ends with an HFN, I am excited for the next book!

T.Ws for violence, child abuse, blood, drugs, and time period homophobia. Also, some readers might have an issue with a serial killer that primarily targets women.

Kathy!! Good God, she was stressin' me out! I've been reading this extra slow, I'm so nervous for Maurice to get caught. I have no clue what sweet baby angel Kenny will do when he finds out his man is a serial killer!!

"He continues pulling a portion of her intestines out. He swings, slashing and disconnecting the organs from her body. Hanging from his fingers now dangles a necklace fit for Wendy. "

🫣 omg! It was kinda scary.

Their chemistry was great. Maurice saw a photo of Kenneth and thought he was the most beautiful man and had to meet him. I loved their adorably awkward photo shoots. blushes and giggles. How they sang and played guitar together. Their deep conversations. They even swapped blood! It was all pretty romantic.

"He trusts me enough to give me his own blood. I’ve never been this close before with another person, for him to do this for me without so much a second thought... Oh my god, I love him. He really is so special."

I LOVE the illustrations. Knowing what the MCs look like help me bond with them. Y'all need to check out the authors' ig for more. They're amazing! The one of Kenny in his sexy lil nurse dress. 🤭
Ouu! Speaking of, their lil kinky photo shoot they did with him in that dress was hot.

I enjoyed every minute of this book. I'm anxious to start the next one. I just know Im gonna cry when Kenny finds out.

Read 10th- 16th January:

Ahhhh I can’t believe I finally got to read Kenneth and Maurice’s story!!! (Thank you to my wonderful friend Genesee for the arc! I feel privileged I got to read this before everyone else! ) Awww these boyssss🥺. I’ve been following their story through art for a while and now their story properly exists on paper and ahhhh…. precious. (is that the right word for a serial killer? 😂) It was a fun and fast paced read with immaculate 70s vibes. (Music, outfits, technology… the lot!)

I think I would have liked a little more depth to certain parts of the plot (especially the police detective scenes, they could have been balanced out more equally with the rest of the story! Just my personal opinion! ) but it was overall an enjoyable read and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a quick and interesting read with a bit (a lot 😈) of violence and tension hehe….

I know I mentioned this before but I mean it: if you’re a fan of the 70s, DON’T WALK, RUN for this book.

Also please we need to normalise illustrations in adult books cos they really enhance the reading experience👀 just sayinggg….

BUT NOW WE ENTER PANIC MODE FOR THE SEQUEL. How will this all end???

"Not even a blink’s time, and the silver is drowned in crimson.
Chop.
Rip.
Slice.
Tear.”

How do I start? This book is a debut by Genesee and it was incredibly beautiful and disturbing in the best way possible! So I want more!! This a dark MM Romance so read the TW before you get your hands bloody!

The balance, or unbalance, between right and wrong is described with such delicacy that I was immediately drowned in crimson… See what I did there? ;) The author also makes the most incredible illustrations, which is how I met her… We almost manage to accompany the book with a visual support, which is the icing on the cake!

So, this story is set in the 70's, with a soundtrack that borders on mastery and that fits each of the characters perfectly, regardless of what each of them is doing. Whether it's getting dressed, driving, relaxing, or even dismembering someone, there's always a perfect song.

I LOVED that everything is related to photography, the preparation, the scenes, the poses, the development process (darkroom) everything had a super vibrant and nostalgic atmosphere. A time that we had to wait to know how the photos turned out…

Maurice is 25 years old and a photography student. He is charismatic, mysterious, charming, stylish, outwardly talented, and a perfectionist in everything he does! And he is also a serial killer, because we have to have a hobby, am I right? He is an artistic serial killer, his vision, his dedication to the piece is remarkable, and he did everything to get the perfect picture, with no regrets, in his head, they are lucky!

And the angel Kenneth..... 27 years old, nurse, handsome, adorable, shy and who has difficulty accepting compliments and is grateful and whenever he receives them (always!), simultaneously blushing. Very naive, in love with life, but at the same time sad and alone...

Maurice "sees" Kenneth for the 1st time in a photo, taken by the latter's sister, who is in the same photography class as him, and bammmm at first sight! And not in a weird way, he found him so beautiful and perfect with his eye patch that he just couldn't get over it. They are presented in a photoshot and the chemistry is immediate. But of course they are both men, and both are confused by the obvious attraction they immediately feel. Kenneth falls in love with his confidence, beauty, and strangeness and just lets go... He rides Maurice's wave, among others! They discover themselves as people through their relationship, which was beautiful to see! We don't have many on-page sex scenes, but when it happen, it's nuclear! Their conversations during these cutscenes are so weird, innocent, and lustful that they leave you glued to it! And oh my gosh, Kenny's sexy nurse dress… (look for visual support here https://www.instagram.com/p/CnUPLk_rDd1/ ).

It was strange to love a character who takes pleasure in killing the way he does. But at the same time, he is so passionate, romantic, and adventurous that we "almost" forgot about it. It was also amazing to see his inner struggle about guilt or thoughts about the victims being people and not just "models" for the scene. All this without being caught by the police because, at times, he makes some mistakes.

We also see their struggle, at a time when being a gay couple was frowned upon... simply wanting to love each other without the world dictating absolute and restrictive rules!Love is love!

Sometimes the dialogues were a little strange, confusing, and with unnecessary information... It's the only thing I can say negatively about this book.

This book ends on an HFN, and I'm really looking forward to the next All Yesterday's Papers, where we'll continue to see Maurice's internal struggle and whether he manages to remain incognito to the police and his soul mate.

I received this book from author Genesee and this is my honest opinion.

Overall Opinion
Excuse me while I go cry in the corner because HOW DARE THIS BOOK END! I have literally no clue how to begin this review, what a ride!! This book is thick! But don't let that hold you back from this marvelous creation! Full of all things 70s, its like a wild journey of nostalgia and real love. First of all, I want to say Maurice and Kenneth are the absolute most wonderfully romantic characters I've read in a long time. They were so sweet and wonderful together and no matter the outside world, they stand together, especially in a time where being anything but straight is seen by many as wrong. Maurice, being the artistic serial killer he is, comes across as very blunt and brutally honest to everyone but Kenneth, who sees past that to the soft loving side. Kenneth, ahh sweet sunshiny Kenneth, is the most darling nurse that could exist, all shy and awkward with compliments, is the best cinnamon roll. The character development is done impeccably, with depth to each and every one of them, leaving me feeling like they are real and a part of me. It deals with realistic situations, and it focuses on not just the love story between Maurice and Kenneth, but also baring witness to Maurice trying to keep the fact he is a serial killer well hidden. It is dark but at the same time so beautiful. It is such a unique story, not like anything else out there, and I cannot emphasize more the amazing job Genesee did with this creation. Not only is this book absolutely perfection, the artwork the author has created of her characters and their world is out of this world beautiful! It is not often books have artwork that coincide with scenes and characters, and it adds a whole other level of intimacy you feel towards the book. I absolutely cannot wait to read the next book and see what comes of Maurice and Kenneth's future, will Maurice be able to evade his crimes and will they finally get their happily ever after they so deserve?

I was one of the lucky beta readers who got to witness All Tomorrow’s Photos’s development and unraveling from start to finish. What’s immediately crystal clear in this novel is how magnetically all of the characters’ storylines intertwine and contrast with and into each other, always complete with a spotless attention to detail within their every aspect. The different and unique perspectives draw you up close and personal to each character’s philosophy, putting your mind to the test, challenging you to open up and understand (or not) the mind of a twisted killer. If you’re looking to take a trip back in time full of suspense, romance, crime and a refined taste for rock ‘n’ roll, this is your book!

First I’d like to say this is my first book where it’s based in the past. This book is based in 1970’s Michigan and for me it took a bit to get into due to the setting. But once I got a few more chapters in and I looked at all of Genesee amazing art on her profile of the characters, they come together for me and I loved it.

Maurice is a photography student, learning all the different ways to develop his pictures and his skills in his art work, he comes across a picture of one of his classmates art work and asks to use the man in the picture as a model. Things go great when they meet up and they both feel the connection towards each other that they’ve been looking for elsewhere in past relationships. Neither of them quite understands it but they decide to give it a go.

On the flip side of this relationship Maurice leads another secret life, his “art” is something he creates just for himself but how much longer is he going to be able to keep it just between him and his model.

Kenneth is a total sweetheart and a complete cinnamon roll. He’s a nurse in the 70’s which is deemed “women’s work” but he was determined to stand his ground and do the job he wanted. When he was asked to be a model for one of his sisters classmates he jumped at the chance even though he’s super nervous and shy, but once he meets the handsome guy he’s totally smitten with him, even if he is a bit strange.

I love the two story’s running alongside each other so we get to see both sides of Maurice.
I love that they are both new to being Bi and navigating the relationship together.
We also get to hear from Norman’s point of view as he’s the detective in charge of all missing persons!

It’s a great debut book and I can’t wait to read the next book as this ends on a HFN.

There are trigger warnings, please read them if your sensitive to them they are there for a reason.

Gah!! I thoroughly enjoyed the setting in which the story takes place. The 70’s were truly magical with bellbottoms, feathered hair, vinyl records and punk rock. I felt like I walked through a Time Machine that brought me back in time to shag rugs and braided haired hippies!!

Even though Maurice is statuesque and as beautiful as a model, he is rough around the edges. He doesn’t mince words, saying what’s on his mind unapologetically. He is an artist attending college for photography and one day in class he is instantly enamored with the photo of one of his classmates, Kathy. The model in the photo is Kenneth, Kathy’s brother.

Kenneth is such a cinnamon roll. He’s a male nurse in an occupation that is mainly for women and he has to deal with the stigma of that. Kenneth is adorably shy and taken aback at first with Maurice calling him beautiful, but he loves it all the same.

The way they interact is so organic. Nothing is forced, they still go to school and work. Kenneth and Kathy still meet up for lunch and chat on the phone. However, In the midst of Maurice and Kenneth falling in love, Maurice is deeply ensnared by his internal demon. He’s a serial killer, and is being hunted by the cops.

By the end of book one I fell in love with all the the characters. I know book two will have me on a roller coaster ride and I am so looking forward to it!!

Make sure to read trigger/content warnings.

Disclaimer: I received an arc from the author in exchange for my honest review.

Meet Maurice, a student of photography, and a serial killer. When Kathy, Maurice’s classmate, brings photos of her brother Kenneth, Maurice can’t stop think about him.

And when they meet for the first time, sparks fly.

I’m not usually a fan of insta love, but here it works as Maurice obviously isn’t the sanest person on this planet, and his love is more like an obsession with Kenneth.

I really appreciate we get to see a lot of Maurice’s background (his childhood, first murder). It really helps to understand his actions.

This book is dark and spicy. There are both explicit murder scenes, and explicit sex scenes.

I can’t wait for the second book to see, what happens next. I have my theories, but I’m excited to see, what the author comes up with.

All Tomorrow's Photo's
is the debut novel by S.S. Genesee. A queer historical fiction romance between a cinnamon roll male nurse and a photographer who also happens to be a serial killer.

I feel in love with S.S. Genesee's original characters the first time I saw them. While there were definitely times that this felt like a debut novel , from the over detailing of unnecessary things to sometimes choppy dialogue , overall I really enjoyed reading and getting to know more about Maurice and Kenneth.

Maurice is certainly a bit of awkward with his enthusiasm and strong beliefs. It was weird for me to like a character who enjoyed killing woman for the sole purpose of his art. My favorite part of his character was the internal struggle he had over continuing his urges and the thought of losing what he found with Kenneth. Kenneth is a naive cinnamon roll baby who gets fully swept up in Maurice's attention and praise. Together they were really sweet and have a handful of open door intimate scenes.

Butterflies fizz around in his stomach—every kiss Maurice gives does that to him. Every single one.

The story line follows the growth of the couple's relationship along with Maurice's sinister hobby and the investigation into the crimes. While there is blood and gore, Maurice sees it as art and beautiful and it's describe in almost a fanciful way.

All Tomorrow's Photos
ends not on a cliffhanger, but it is left open ended and Maurice and Kenneth's story will continue in the next book. I'm interested to see how their story unfolds. This was an enjoyable historical fiction romance with double bi awakening, steam, violence , murder, photo shoots, compliments and firework kisses.

TW: Violence, blood, murder, discussion of past child abuse, sex, alcohol, marijuana, homophobic slurs (check the authors list for all possible trigger warnings)

A serial killer artist finds his muse.

📖 Multi POV, third limited, present tense

✨ Synopsis:
Photography student Maurice takes his art to the next level while giving in to his lust for blood. But the gorgeous and sweet nurse Kenneth changes everything.

✨ Review:
The saying “the villain is the hero of their own story” is especially true with S.S. Genesee’s All Tomorrow’s Photos duology.

At the start, Maurice is a cold-blooded killer, detached from society and caring about little else other than making his art. He does terrible things, yet he’s a fascinating character that you can’t help becoming invested in.

When he meets Kenneth, he’s attracted to his beauty and, to me, it seems like a surface-level attraction—he covets beautiful things. But the sweet and naïve Kenneth is capable of great empathy, which strikes a chord with Maurice. Unknowingly, unwittingly, Maurice begins to feel.

There’s an innocent quality to both the dialogue and interior monologue that feels authentic to the seventies while juxtaposing the darker subject matter. I loved Maurice and Kenneth’s journey which was both complex and heartfelt.

Maurice was never valued as a person so he never learned to value human life. But Kenneth, who does not know about Maurice’s extracurricular activities, teaches him to love. There were so many moments where I was shouting at the page, “Things are going so well for you, stop killing people!” But often we don’t appreciate what we have until we lose it all.

I was on the edge of my seat throughout book two as the stakes kept getting higher and I LOVED the ending. So good. Highly recommend!

Let me just say that it was an honour to beta-read this novel!! Before I even read it, however, I instantly fell in love with the characters, their personalities, and the conflicts within their own worlds.

As mentioned in the synopsis, the novel follows Maurice, a photographer who takes an interest in things usually seen as disgusting and gory – so much so, that he becomes a serial killer for his projects. However, this changes when he meets Kenneth and falls head-over-heels in love with him. Maurice now must juggle his secret macabre passions with his fast-unfolding love life, all whilst trying to hide from the moral and legal consequences.

This was a joy to read from start to finish! The 70s is an era I enjoy – shoutout to those cultural references - but haven’t read much of. When combined with this unique concept, the whole novel was a breath of fresh air. Not to forget, there were some moments of high tension which hooked me in so well and kept me reading. As I mentioned at the start of my review, all the characters have such exciting personalities. The plot brings these together and mixes them so well.

All in all, a fantastic read. If you like the 70s as well as a combination of romance and crime, then I’d definitely recommend this book!! :D

You know when a story is just so good you almost want to read slower so you can enjoy it longer? That was this story for me. It was so good and the reason I rated it as high as I did is even the things I didn’t like were completely overshadowed by the things I did.

-Third person present tense some time getting used to but I can understand why that choice was made for telling this story.

-The introduction of Norman’s character, while necessary, jarred me from the romance. In some ways, his sections were even more sobering than any others since he really pulls the reader back into “reality” and out from the bubble of the love story. While Norman is the “good” guy he’s also the antagonist, and the looming threat to the relationship between Maurice and Kenneth.

-I was very concerned how the sex would be handled with two inexperienced queer guys in an era of no sex ed. Their physical relationship got handled very well, in the sense that it played out better than I expect while also staying believable for the time period.

-The characters were wonderful. Likable, believable, and everything from their speech to their interests to their wardrobes really matched the period. Nothing stuck out as awkward but rather they all came off as genuine individuals.

-The ending. Not exactly a cliffhanger but not quite a HFN, either. The story does end on a good note, but one that also leaves me with a sense of dread. While I would love to believe these two will get a HEA, part of also knows the likelihood of that not happening. That being said, the desire to see how things play out and the final resolution leave me very eager for the next book.

-The writing really is so beautiful. The imagery, the style, and flow of the plot all come together to make this story hard to put down. I could’ve easily finished it much sooner but I forced myself to put it down and digest the plot for this review and so I could enjoy it longer.

Overall, I LOVED this book so much. One of my top reads of the year. And now in my top ten MM romance stories ever read.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

All Tomorrow’s Photos is S.S. Genesee’s debut novel, and book one of a duet.  It contains dark elements and content warnings should be reviewed before reading.

If you’ve read the blurb, you know that Maurice is a serial killer. I had read about murders in books but it was the first time I was reading about only ONE of the MCs being the killer. I was used to the couple doing the killing together so that was a very different experience for me. Maurice is such a complex yet simple character. When I first started the book, I was a bit cold towards him but as soon as Kenneth entered the picture, I totally fell in love with him and with both of them as a couple.

Kenneth is a pure cinnamon roll character. He’s just so lovable and perfectly balances the darkness of the story with his bubbly personality. I loved how different the author made their characters and how easy it was to distinguish which POV I was reading without having to think too much.

As a couple, Kenneth and Maurice are so sweet, and sort of naïve in a way that they both experience, together, a same-sex relationship for the first time. I loved how Maurice got to take the lead physically but how Kenneth was the muse, the emotional pull for Maurice. Their relationship was so romantic, and the author really succeeded at making us switch back and forth between the darker and the lighter side of their story.

What stood out the most was the simplicity of Kenneth and Maurice’s love, and even though their story happened at a time and in a setting that raised real challenges for both MCs, the two men shared really special little moments and I was there for it. Every little detail made me feel like I was back in the 70’s and being able to really immerse the reader in a particular setting like that is a real talent.

Book 2 sounds super promising. Please check out S.S. Genesee’s IG page to discover all the wonderful art they have done for Kenneth and Maurice.

Rep: Romantic/sexual awakening, Kenneth sexual.

TW/CW: meurtres, gore, usage de drogue, homophobie/propos homophobes.

All Tomorrow’s Photos ARC Review
.
Thank you S.S. Genesee for sending me an E-ARC to review!
.
I first discovered this book when the cover was revealed and knew I had to read it immediately based on the synopsis. The author was kind enough to send me an E-ARC to read early. This book is set in the 70s which is really fun to read about as I typically read books set modern-day. One thing I really loved reading about was how Maurice prints the photos he takes and how complicated photography was back then. Maurice reminds me a lot of Hannibal from NBC's Hannibal in the almost artistic approach they both take to killing. I also adore Kenneth as he's such a ball of sunshine. I'm so happy that Kenneth and Kathy had each other as they're both bi in a time when being anything other than straight was dangerous. I think their relationship is very sweet and I wish I was that close with my brother. This was such an interesting book to read and over the last few days since completing it, I keep wanting to pick it back up and read more of the story. I actually screamed when I finished reading and am so excited for book 2!!! I really am looking forward to seeing where the story goes. SPOILER! Kenneth never found out about Maurice killing in book one so I'm very excited to see how it's handled in book two! SPOILER!
.
The author @geneseedraws is also such a talented artist and posts a lot of illustrations of Maurice and Kenneth on Instagram, so please go check them out! ☺️

While reading, the two characters gave me Steddie vibes (Steve and Eddie from Netflix’s Stranger Things) and this could just be because I've been reading fanfics of them since like June, but the vibes were there. Maurice as Eddie and Kenneth as Steve. Kenneth's sister Kathy also reminds me a lot of Robin. Totally not relevant to the book but I had to share just in case anyone else loves Steddie. 😭

So my review for this book will be a little odd, but I have reasoning. So first of all, I am giving it a 5 because I think it was beautifully written, beautiful art on the cover, a very unique story, a really well-done peek into '70s culture in the US, and I think anyone who enjoys this genre would rate it highly.
The dynamic between Maurice and Kenneth was romantic and lovely, and there were some intriguing spicy scenes (hellooo, nurse) and likeable side characters.
However, if you were to ask me if I enjoyed reading the book, I'm not so sure. I personally have never read a book featuring a serial killer MC until now, and I don't think it's for me. I had a really hard time looking past everything and 'rooting' for Maurice (although besides all the killing, he is a compelling and likable character). I think it would have been easier for me to accept if he killed bad guys or the like, but reading graphic, drawn out scenes about innocent women being chopped up wasn't for me. But if you're someone who doesn't mind serial killer characters, then I genuinely think you would love it!
I will eventually read the sequel because I'm curious how the story ends, but I'll definitely need a break from anything dark in the meantime.

Thank you so much to SS Genesee for this amazing arc!
This story reads as part crime, part MM romance, with suspense, steam, and sweetness!
Maurice is a photography student with a tragic past and a very dark secret. He’s a bit of a loner who’s never really clicked with girls though he doesn’t know why. On the outside he’s handsome, quiet, maybe a bit odd but sweet. On the inside, he’s planning his next photo shoot…with his latest murder victim.
Maurice’s quiet life is going fine until he sees a beautiful man in one of fellow student’s photos. Completely intrigued, he decides he’d be the perfect subject for his next school project.
Kenneth is a kind and adorable nurse at the local ER. After his long-term college relationship fails, he hasn’t tried again, and he’s never considered dating a man. But when he meets Maurice, he’s definitely attracted. As time goes on and these two get to know each other better, there is no doubt they’re both falling hard.
We oscillate between Maurice, the photographer and doting boyfriend, to Maurice the ruthless serial killer. Kenneth can’t believe his sweet boyfriend who’d ever do something like this, and Maurice hopes with all he has that Kenneth never finds out.
The dichotomy of Maurice is fascinating; this story reads like a serial killer documentary. We really get into his head as he finds his victims and plans their demise. We also see how he can be a vicious killer one day, and being so incredibly sweet to his boyfriend the next.
And Kenneth is absolutely adorable. If anyone can bring out someone’s romantic side, it’s him!
I seriously can’t wait for book 2 to see where these two go!

Amazing! Bravo! This was so refreshing in a sea of romance books that all start to feel the same. It’s the 1970’s backdrop. It’s the serial killer MC that the author doesn’t try to glorify or vilify, it’s the suspense, it’s the sweet romance. I love this book. Also Kenneth needs to be protected at all costs!

I absolutely do NOT want to spoil this, so I’m gonna TRY to write a review without spoiling. I struggle. So only read if you are okay with the idea that I might spoil it a little without realizing it.

So we have Maurice and he’s our serial unaliver MC. And while this is certainly not the first romance to feature and serial killer as a main love interest. It’s the first one I’ve read where I feel like the author didn’t work double time to sway my opinion of him one way or the other.

There’s so numerous mentions of Maurice being a heartless psychopath. Or paragraphs dedicated to his prowess as a suave lethal killer. The author doesn’t give us an out to forgive Maurice by having him only kill bad people. Or at least people that have done him wrong. No…. He does it just to see them bleed…. For his art. And the only mentions about his success as a serial killer and Maurice’s own musings as he try’s to hype himself up about what he’s done and convince himself that he won’t get caught. But it never feels braggadocio. It feels more like he’s scared and trying to convince himself than convince the reader.

We do get some back story about Maurice’s childhood but very little time if any is spent trying to convince us that those events shaped Maurice into what he is now. Same with Maurice is “diagnosis” for lack of a better word. He definitely misses some social cues, is honest to a fault, and there’s just something different about him…. Other than the obvious. But the author lets Maurice’s actions and his interactions with the other characters speak for themselves. We’re allowed to draw out own conclusions and decide what we think of Maurice and if we’re going to forgive his actions …. Or Not.

Kenneth is a sweet naive angel and I love him. I will say I do feel his character lacks a little depth. And he seems mostly there so we can watch Maurice dote on him … but I’m okay with that. His relationship with Maurice provides the balm that we need to soothe rough edges of the dark back drop.

We know he’s a nurse and that he’s very trusting. And we know about his past relationship. It’s not that the author has completely neglected him. It’s just that I don’t think the story is equally about him. I think the story is about Maurice…. And Maurice’s relationship with Kenneth. Vs being about both of them and how they navigate coming together. But Maurice is plenty entertaining on his own and the suspense of whether or not Ken would find out was enough for me. I didn’t need more from Kenneth.

If you want a well written story, that has romance, suspense, and you’re okay with a morally black MC…. ( because while I love Maurice…. And he’s certainly not written like some of the more violent in MC’s in dark romances….. there’s no doubt he should be under the jail) you should love this book. Oh and of course you have to love the 70’s back drop which really does add something special. And the author doesn’t slip up by adding modern colloquialisms … at least not that I noticed.

In first place, thanks to the author for providing me an ARC of this book. It’s been one of my first reads of the year and such an amazing way to begin it!

You came here looking for some cute, spicy mxm romance? Or something dark, gore, murderous stuff? Maybe a bit of both?

Well, today’s your lucky day because this book’s murderous creature is no more nor less than our main character (which, for me, was a total plus from the start). Finding books written from the point of view of a serial killer is the kind of thing you always enjoy because, well, you don’t see it often. Everyone enjoys a good diabolic human being every once in a while. And here is something I love about Maurice: he is unapologetic (for most of the book, at least). He considers himself a murderer, and unlike other books, he doesn’t become any better just for “the magic of love”. Nope. He kills because for him that’s a way to acknowledge his final goal: art. All the gore and the macabre he makes of his victims is for the purpose of creating “the picture”, and the way he experiences this need and expresses it through the book (I swear I’m not a psycho myself, I just really enjoy new perspectives).

As I said, I love the fact that he acknowledges his dark side and manages to live a normal life anyways, and we fall for him as a character.
And the main reason we probably love his personality is because… here he comes… Our other main character! Or basically, a cinnamon roll. I can’t deny I´m a sucker for cinnamon roll meets devil and gets corrupted little by little.
But seriously, baby Kenneth needs to be protected. Or corrupted. Anyways he shall not be physically hurt under any reasons.
The chemistry between the two main characters is stunning and it sustains the book (which seems more like an introductory book) by itself. I loved every interaction between them and even the spicy scenes (which I usually skip) are catchy and enjoyable.
And here’s another thing I loved about the book (apart from the characters. Have I said I adore the characters? Not enough times, I’m afraid): it’s addictive as hell. I usually find it really hard to finish an ebook/digital copy even if I’m totally enjoying, but this time I reached the last page in a really short time and said “Wait, is it over? But it’s too soon!”. The plot follows a really easy scheme which is kinda relax-climax-relax, so you never get really tired, even if the book itself advances slowly on some aspects.
Some things I wished the book had developed a bit more are:
1. The crimes and the investigation itself I know things were different on the 70s, but sometimes the investigation seems driven basically because the plot requires it more than for logical reasons. I wished there would have been more loosen threads, something that would have put Maurice on the spot or given him a rougher time. But most of the times, after every crime, he just keeps a low profile and moves on. It would have been really fun and entertaining to see Maurice trying to play with the police (kinda like in Knives Out or Death Note).
2. The side characters I found most of the victims boring if not really stupid. Having some fight or big issue between Maurice and any of them, or some scuffle. Instead, all the crimes are somehow easy so we can go directly to Maurice’s artistic moment. Besides, Kenneth’s sister also seemed a bit out of character. Like, one moment she adores Maurice and the next one she’s suspicious about him just because *the truck*. I would have loved to see her doubts and personality more developed.

With all that said, this first book seems more like an introduction to get to know better Kenneth and Maurice than giving us some action and drama. It still manages to be addictive and interesting, so I’ll have to wait patiently for the next one to arrive!

While I am not exactly one for romance, there was so much more going on with this story that had me interested! One of my favorite parts about this book was simply how intriguing of a character Maurice was. I found myself throughly horrified and fascinated all at the same time with every kill he'd done, and how much thought was put into them! For me, this was the parts of the book that had me holding on for dear life. Mix that with a setting in an area I'm generally familiar with, during one of the most fun times in history, it was a great surprise for me!

I really appreciated how much thought and care was put into the little things--stuff that you wouldn't think to see in a book. The monotony of processing photographs (I feel like a learned woman now), just how unhinged someone could get, the morbid fascination of a killer. Not to mention there was no stops held back on descriptions of it all. Most books, i feel, would hold back but man this one did not in alot of aspects and wow what a complete bold move! All that wrapped up in a style that was easy to read and not at all confusing? I enjoyed it!

Maurice and Kenneth!! 🖤 MM Dark Romance
I got this book as an ✨ARC✨ for an honest review.

"One of the most important parts of his body, his blood. He trusts me enough to give me his own blood. I’ve never been this close before with another person, for him to do this for me without so much a second thought... Oh my god, I love him. He really is so special."🩸🩸🖤🖤

This is a 5 star read for me!! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The whole book was perfect in it's own way!! Maurice is a serial unaliver who is into photography and uses gory methods to pursue his art. Kenneth is our sweet cinnamon roll nurse who captures the attention of Maurice. Strangers to lovers. Gay/Bi- awakening. This book is based in the 70s, rock and roll being a major part in it. Amazing story plot! Even the art for this book is so beautiful and perfectly represented! ❤️ It is both adorably sweet and twistedly dark, a great combination of both. Has explicit scenes with spice 18+ details 🌶️🔥 and gory (unaliving) details 🔪🩸 **Check Trigger Warnings** I can't wait for part 2 and know and learn more about this 2 characters !! 💕💕💕

This book feels like it's a little bit outside of my comfort zone, as I haven't before read a romance where one of the characters is a serial killer, and it's probably not a genre I'm super interested in reading more from because I couldn't really separate Maurice's serial killer persona from his romantic persona. I know dark romances are definitely a popular genre for a lot of other people though, so I hope those people find this book!

I do really like that this book is set in the 1970s. I learnt a few things, like when Kenneth says he can't watch 3D movies I learnt that 3D films were invented in the 1950s. And I've never understood how film photography worked, and while I still don't understand it, I enjoyed the scenes in which Maurice was working on developing his film.

To be honest I had forgotten that this book was a duology so I was waiting to see how the ending was going to play out, and was a little annoyed at myself when I got to the end and was reminded it was a duology. I want to know how it ends!! 😅

I originally read the spin-off standalone novel "The Noble's Merman", as the author was kind enough to approve me for an e-ARC, and that introduced me to an AU version of the main characters for this duology. So when I saw the author mention a sale/promo on the ebook for this, I had to jump on it, and I was excited to start reading the main story for them. I think my experience was richer for the fact I read the AU spin-off first.

I've enjoyed going through this a lot, and I love the setting and the characters as they are here (and I have an even greater appreciation now for how various aspects of them were translated into "The Noble's Merman".) I really want to see what happens in the sequel, I need to know what happens with the crime portion of this story, and how it impacts Kenneth and Maurice's relationship. (Also Kathy, girl, lay off on the aggro.)

Not quite what I usually find myself reading, but I enjoyed it all the same! The writing was stellar and the plot was captivating. Definitely spicy! What I liked most I think was the juxtaposition of the violent murders by Maurice and his absolute love and the cozy chapters he had with Kenneth. Definitely made the story that much better! The ending leaves me wondering where the story is going to take these characters in the second book for sure.

I also really liked the setting! I don't see Michigan often so it was fun going "hey I know where that's at!" haha.

I received an ARC for this for an honest review!

I really enjoyed diving into the world of these characters, felt plenty of suspense, and so look forward to book two! A nice blend of dark, intense themes, fluffy queer romance and all packaged in an awesome retro 1970's setting.

this was very sweet despite it being heavily centered around m*rder 😭 kenneth was an angel and i loved the protective and obsessive aspects of maurice. the story was interesting and i was surprised to find myself rooting for maurice to not get caught, which is NUTS. the ONLY thing that did not work for me and i was not a fan of was the characters actually speaking their every thought. like the inner dialogues being spoken despite no one being around (or WITH someone around too) seemed a little odd to me. other than that i enjoyed my time with this story :-)

*i received an ARC for an honest review.
