A comprehensive collection of patterns using the sashiko stitching technique, written with the absolute beginner in mind. The sections:

Things you can make with sashiko - by which they mean things you can add sashiko stitching to as decoration. There are 'patterns' at the back of the book for fukin and decorative cloths, placemats and furoshiki wraps (should you not know how to cut fabric into a square and hem it). Slightly more meaningfully there are instructions for a pocket tissue case, drawstring purse, flat bags of two sizes, pouch, zip up purse, book cover. The instructions are in the Japanese style with lots of diagrams and minimal text. The materials list for many are overly complicated IMO.

Patterns with straight lines x 70
Patterns with curved lines x 14
One stitch sashiko (hitomezashi) x 9
All patterns are based on grids / graph paper with sequence of stitch shown.

Let's get started: fabric and threads, tools and supplies, fabric and thread preparation, how to draw the design, how to trace the designs, about needles and stitches, needle and thread handling, starting and ending a stitch lines, how to connect threads, stitching order, free standing motifs, stitching tips, finishing, placement of motifs

Project Instructions and templates (see list of projects above)
Straight grid / Diagonal grid - not sure how much use these would be, only one size and not easily transferred to fabric.
Index of patterns - uses the Japanese name and an English translation, not going to help at all until you are familiar with the patterns, but you can flip though the book easily to find what you are looking for.

Interesting but not altogether inspiring. The projects suggested didn't appeal to me that much.
