Eighteen-year-old Georgette Baine is a young pirate captain raised with utter disdain toward royalty. But when she and her twin brother, Captain Elias Baine, make a precarious deal with a King to gain access to a long-lost treasure, they find themselves in an untenable position. The King has tasked them with procuring stolen cargo under the watchful eye of his army commander, and Georgette is convinced they've been misled.
Mercy Landlight is a nineteen-year-old princess who has been sent to wed a king to secure political peace with his country and hers. A dutiful daughter of the crown she would never question her brother's decree until on her way to her new home, and husband, her journey is thwarted.
The sparks of an unfamiliar romance cause Mercy to question everything she's been taught about herself. While Georgette strains to decide if she should continue the life path she was destined for or to entangle herself in a relationship that wouldn't offer her the same freedoms.
With enemies at every bend, this harrowing journey will alter the course of their lives and change the very foundation of who they are and what they've always believed.

“It was as if the ocean was claiming me as its own, telling me I belonged to it.”
I cannot begin to explain how much I loved this book. The characters are so well done, and by the end, I had fallen in love with them all. I connected to Georgette so completely, and I love every ounce of feminism oozing from the entire novel. I now would like to go off and be a pirate, though I’m afraid I would hardly be as skilled with a sword as Georgette or many other characters for that matter. The romance in this book is so rich. The woven tale of the Lady of Day and the Lord of Night had me wishing for a rakish pirate of my own. It takes such skill to build relationships in the way Wildrose has done so successfully. They are so convincing and pure, I found myself thinking of the characters long after I put the story down.
"Don't you want a little adventure? Just a little?"
I then hit a series of twists and turns that left me both heartbroken and begging for more. I am anxiously awaiting the sequel. If you’re looking for a book filled with friendship, incredible family bonds, adventure, and a series of unpredictable twists, this one is it. Monroe Wildrose has really outdone herself, and deserves every ounce of praise. This will forever be one of my favorites.
"To you, it's a kiss stolen from a pirate, and to me, it's the dawn."
I received an advanced reader copy of Fortune of Emerald and Salt because I wanted to read about a woman pirate and her daring adventures. What I got was so much more!
Yes, there are pirates - led by not only a woman but also her twin brother. I loved their sibling relationship more than anything.
Yes, there is adventure - it weaves throughout the story all the way until the final page.
Yes, there is romance - not spicy but very sweet romances that make you want to root for love.
The worldbuilding of this book draws you in, and makes you fascinated to keep reading for more. As I started nearing the end I realized there is so much more of this story left to tell, and I will impatiently wait until the next one is released so I can hungrily binge read it too.
This book was fun, but I had a few issues with it. Part of it might be that it’s YA and a me problem. I feel like it had so much potential, but fell through.
We follow Georgette and her twin brother Elias, pirates, as they co-captain The Siren. They are working a contract for the king to get a valuable, undisclosed, merchandise from another pirate ship. Some of the events just felt odd to me - such as a random, friendly, dueling competition immediately after they were attacked.
The book picks up at the end, but I’m not sure it’s enough to keep me going on the series. The writing wasn’t bad, but I’m just not interested.
4.5 Divertido, entretenido y rápido, libro perfecto para regresar a la lectura y pasar un buen rato. Los personajes me encantaron y me divertí leyéndolo.
I was gifted an audio copy of this book and my gosh, what an adventure!
A brother and sister are captains of a pirate ship who occasionally take mercenary jobs for rich royals. They are hired to retrieve a priceless item that was stolen- but nothing could have prepared them for what that item was.
This story is full of witty banter, adventure, strong females, and plot twists that I never saw coming!
It wouldn’t be a proper pirate tale without a good ol sea shanty! Which the audio narrator SINGS!!!! Her voice is perfect! My jaw hit the floor!
It does end on a cliff hanger and I need to know where the rest of this story goes!
Huge thank you to the author for sending me this book!
This is my first pirate romance, and I absolutely loved it.
The characters are loveable, the political intrigue interesting. There were moments when I wished the author slowed down to get more insight into character motivations and feelings (especially at the end). I first bought this in paperback, but then was given the opportunity to enjoy it in audiobook. Some of the paperback editing and formatting could be spiffed up a bit, but the audiobook does a great job of making it come to life and boosting the experience.
While the plot twists weren't that shocking (and some of that may be because I follow the author on TikTok, so I've seen lots of teasers, lol), I loved the atmosphere and enjoyed the journey. I got properly livid when family members interrupted me during the romantic scenes, lol. And I loved the narrator singing a sea shanty.
I've already bought the 2nd paperback in this finished duology and am excited for the audiobook of it to come out any time now!
Thank you so much to the author for the audiobook copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
“To you, it’s a kiss stolen from a pirate, and to me, it’s the dawn.”
This book was beautifully written. The author has a wonderful voice, and it made me cry. Call me crazy, but I love when a book breaks my heart and makes me cry.
I liked this book so much more than I expected to. I was worried it would feel too young with the MC all being teenagers, but most of them (apart from Mercy) seemed mature and easily could have been mid twenties based on their internal characterisation and dialogue.
I did find Mercy was the most unlikable character for me, but I really liked all the other characters and the story. I wish we’d had more time with George and her love interest toward the end, but I’m looking forward to that in book 2.
wow wow wow this was such a pleasant surprise! all i can say is i’m very glad this duology is fully published because what a cliffhanger and i honestly was like pretty surprised with some things that happened at the end there, which doesn’t normally happen. i just adore george and mercy and i need them to be best friends forever. i can’t wait to see how this story ends. i’m really hoping this ends well for everyone 🫣
A friend recommended this book to me and I went in with few expectations…except for the fact that she’s never steered me wrong before.
I—I might need to revisit this when I can formulate words, but this story was just brilliant. It sucked me into a beautiful world with complex and wonderful relationships. It destroyed me in the best way possible.
I’m writing this at 2am and I’m genuinely thinking of buying the next book right now and continuing reading…who needs sleep right?
Such a fun and easy read. My first pirate novel but it will likely not be my last. The characters were great and I loved their dynamic! And THAT ENDING!! Everything really just went to shit. Excited to pick up the sequel!
I keep seeing the author on TikTok. And while it may be fine, I don’t enjoy scenes where they kick their prior lover out of bed. Not up for this story right now.
the main thing i want to say about this book is how sweet it feels (until it doesn’t…). it’s definitely more character than plot driven, but luckily for me, i LOVED the characters.
What a fun read. Anyone who is a fan of YA and pirates (with some romance thrown in!) should give this book a chance! I received an ARC copy of this book and devoured it. Strong female characters, a good plot, immersive world building…and did I mention pirates? I was rooting for the characters throughout the book. The adventures just kept on coming. Well written and easy to read, loved it!
This book was a gift and also a blind date with a book so I was excited to see what awaited! The characters are all so likable and the story is interesting, I had some issues with the pacing but the twist towards the end setting up the next book made this a good read!
Run don't walk and read this book asap. So so good.
I literally just finished it and I'm chomping at the bit for the next book (which comes out in February). It's a duology so the next book will finish the series.
This book has pirates, twins who are the best of friends, found family, a stollen princess, and a dark and moody King. Seriously go read it. And then come talk to me about it because even though I saw the end coming I was shocked by some things in the last few chapters
This was amazing! I read the book after seeing a quote on Tiktok. I’ve never read a pirate book before and I’m sure this won’t be my last. I loved how strong the main character was, and how much personality she still had. I love a book with a close knit circle of friends like this. Normally not a fan of multiple pov books because I get attached and then the story stops and start on a different story line all of a sudden. But I loved how seamless most of the transitions in this one were they seemed to flow more ( than for example throne of glass) I didn’t feel like I was getting thrown into a different story, just seeing the story from a different POV. Obsessed obsessed obsessed!! Also the Audible narration was amazing!!
Amazing story filled with adventure, love, romance, and all the feels!
First off, let me say that from start to finish, I was totally hooked. The writing is perfect, and because of that I fell in love from the very first page and as I finished the book with blurry eyes, I just kept saying "no. It can't be over yet." I laughed, had my heart race, and rooted and cheered for all the characters. Elias stole my heart, and George is at the top of favorite BA female leads. She's amazing. I cannot wait to own it on paperback when it comes out. Also... I need the next book now, please, because I was not ready for that plot twist! Wonderful story, and Miss Wildrose should be so proud of this book because it's a masterpiece! Easily my favorite read of the year. 💕💕💕
I reaaaallllyyy struggled with this one. It’s a book club pick and I just wanted to push on. And I’m honestly glad I did!
This book follows two twin pirate captains who have both fallen in love with people they cannot have. Was it the forbidden romance I wanted…not really. I wanted more but the ending really smacked me in the face and made me want to immediately read the next book. Really crossing my fingers that the next book is even better.
I can’t give it a full 5 stars because I was really struggling to push on. I wanted to know what happened but also I was just so bored. I’m really happy with the ending because it really made the entire book better. There were some good parts-I really did enjoy the evolvement of the characters and how they grew. I enjoyed the pirate aspect but I felt like there was just a lot of filler subject and I wanted it to be more intense and fast paced. This one is definitely more medium or slow paced.
Oh my god!!! This book is everything. Captain George and the amazing relationship with her brother is a refreshing change from the expected sibling rivalry seen in most books. Mercy's adventure and The growth of the characters through the book had me cheering from my couch. And oh my God the twist!! I won't spoil it but girrrllll I did not expect that. This book had me 😊😦😵😲😊🤣🥰😍😬😔😱😭😭😢😱😱🥰😵😭
This book was so fun! I stayed up way too late to finish it in one sitting and my only regret is starting it before the second in the series is released. I pre-ordered before I even finished the first book and immediately scoured Goodreads, Reddit and Tiktok for ARC reviews. I hope Monroe writes a thousand more stories.
No spice! Very cute though, and would still call it a romance (although no HEA at end of book 1, bit of a cliffhanger!). We can always hope for spice in whatever she writes next though ;).
Read the author’s note at the end! It made the book all the sweeter. I have a close relationship with my brother, and I loved the representation in this book.
OMG. It is one of the best pirate stories I have ever read. I loved them. All of them. I enjoyed getting to know every character. Their interactions and their personalities were all so well described. Each exciting scene teuly got my adrenaline pumping, and I genuinely felt that I got the pirate vibe the entire time. The writing was so good, and I really like the way the author placed the settings. I loved the way she combined words so beautifully and so creatively.
I giggled, I teared up, I was shocked, and I felt the dread among the characters. I will say I sort of predicted some aspects of this story, but for the most part, I stayed in the moment, reading and not wanting to put it down. I usually don’t plan to continue stories immediately, but as soon as I am able to I will be reading the next book. It was such a cliffhanger that I actually really need to keep reading.
