New York Times and USA Today Bestselling author Maisey Yates lives in rural Oregon with her three children and her husband, whose chiseled jaw and arresting features continue to make her swoon. She feels the epic trek she takes several times a day from her office to her coffee maker is a true example of her pioneer spirit. In 2009, at the age of twenty-three Maisey sold her first book.
Since then it’s been a whirlwind of sexy alpha males and happily ever afters, and she wouldn’t have it any other way. Maisey divides her writing time between dark, passionate category romances set just about everywhere on earth and light sexy contemporary romances set practically in her back yard.
She believes that she clearly has the best job in the world.
Friends to lovers. Family and lots of sweet brotherly bonding. Loved the heroine and hero's progression in their relationship. Sweet heartfelt moments. Good pacing.
Best friends to lovers. The hero, Lachlan asks Charity to help “refine” him so that he can be marriage material like his brothers have turned into. This should be fun😈
Friends to lovers trope. One of my favorites if done right. Unfortunately the H was a womanizer while the h was pure as snow (even though she was engaged to someone else).
Can we have a little more balance with the MCs? Especially since the H knew he had feelings for the h since he was 16.
Read this as part of our book club where we all picked different cheesy romance books to compare!
I’d like to change the title of this book to ‘Traumatized Cowboy Takes Advantage of Grief-Stricken Virgin’ 😂
This book was seriously stereotypical and quite ridiculous. Lachlan is a notorious ‘bad boy’ who has problems with alcohol and sleeping around with women he doesn’t care about - oh and he has unresolved trauma from his dad physically abusing him as a child and therefore he won’t allow himself to fall in love with anyone. Charity (yes her name is Charity), is a 30 year old vet who is grieving over the loss of her dad who basically raised her to be the most innocent girl ever - therefore she’s a virgin, she’s never kissed anyone, never even THOUGHT about sex, and is engaged to someone….
Lachlan sees his brothers getting married and having kids and thinks that will fix him, so he asks Charity to ‘reform him’. Charity needs some confidence, and asks Lachlan to help her. 50% through the book, they can’t hold back from each other and end up sleeping together (Charity’s fiancé takes it incredibly well). After sleeping together, they decide to get married and end up married within the week…. And who would have thought?? THEY HAVE PROBLEMS. And what will solve these problems? Getting pregnant (because they refuse to use condoms?) and having a baby together.
It was cliche after cliche. Lachlan was crazy possessive with Charity and all he wanted was to be the one to take her virginity. Clearly these people have never heard of therapy or birth control?? This book had no plot other than the characters refusing to have some self reflection. And maybe 60% was intimate scenes.
The Troublemaker is the sixth book in the Four Corner Ranch Series. The series focuses on the residents who make up the ranches in the area that all meet at one corner. The ranches banded together to help each other and to allow for various projects. The book has been out for a month and is another yummy read from Maisey Yates.
Charity Wyatt is the local veterinarian. She took over the practice from her father after working with him for a few years. She loves working with the animals and loves her best friend Lachlan McCloud. Lachlan is the bad boy from the McCloud ranch. He often came to Charity for sewing up and fixing after his father used to beat him.
Lachlan McCloud is a bad boy with a devil may care attitude. He has seen how happy his brothers are and thinks he should be married too. He goes to Charity for help to learn how to be better thinking she will help him. (After all she is engaged to another Vet out in Virginia.) She agrees to help him, but they both discover something surprising - they love each other.
Maisey Yates has written another great novel, The Troublemaker. It is always fun to revisit her older characters from prior books. However, as always it can be read as a standalone. Lachlan is hot hot hot and Charity a bit quirky - together they are dynomite.
I have a read a lot of Maisey Yates books and usually love them and the characters, but this one was a little disappointing for a couple of reasons. For one, the book needed to be proofread, so many errors. It was like she was hurrying to get the book done or trying to add more pages to get the length she needed. There was a lot of repetition of what the characters said and areas when she would repeat their movements. I would have to go back and reread because I thought I had missed something. Another thing is the characters, I just really couldn't connect to them and I think it was because of all the repetition. There could have been so much more depth to the story. Great storyline, but poorly executed. These two were best friends, but Charity had never celebrated her friend's birthday before? Charity had no other friends but Lachlan? They never acted like friends after they were married. They never did fun things together like best friends do. Just disappointed...😞
Another in the Four Corners Ranch series, in which the last of the McCloud brothers, Lachlan, has decided he needs to be reformed so that he can marry and have the happiness his brothers are enjoying. So, he asks his best friend for years, veterinarian Charity Wyatt to help him. What she suggests isn't what he wants to hear, but he does it--only to find that he has no intention of marrying someone else when he really wants Charity!
Wonder of wonders! She has loved him since their first encounter when they were teens, but being married isn't the solution to Lachlan's woes, which he soon finds out, and decides he has to leave her. But can he do that? Will he do that? (With a bonus novella also provided), this is a nice conclusion to the issues the McCloud brothers have endured all their lives.
Maisey Yates brings us the story of Charity and Lachlan. They both have something in common: They have felt loss. Ever since she found Lachlan, they have been best friends ever since. They are the best thing in each other's lives. When Lachlan asks Charity for a favor, sparks start to fly between them. Will they give in after all these years, or will they want to keep their friendship intact and ignore those feelings? And if they do, will it lead to happiness or devastation? Charity and Lachlan must maneuver around all the feelings around them and figure out what to do about them.
Maisey Yates brings us the story of friendship and the love between two people as a result of it. When passion comes into the equation, they must figure out if it is worth the gamble, or if fear will get in their way. I enjoyed seeing how these two would react to each other and how they try to figure out life when things change.
There was also a short novella about Jude and Penny. Jude and Penny were childhood best friends who had to watch out for each other because of what life had thrown at them. They were each other's first love and first kiss. They were everything to each other until they weren't. Years later, they run in to each other and they take a chance. Will this chance lead them to happiness, or will the hurt from the past be too much to get over?
I read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I would like to thank NetGalley and Harlequin Trade Publishing, Canary Street Press for this privilege.
This story wraps up the McCloud family’s portion of the Four Corners Ranch series, all of the brothers have found their HEA. Although I didn’t feel the author got as into the nitty-gritty of the abuse these boys experienced at the hand of their father as she did in Gus’s book, Lachlan is known to be the brother he took out most of his rage on. While I think this book can be read as a standalone, I also think the depth of the pain (emotionally and physically) Lachlan has can’t be known if you haven’t read The Rough Rider.
Charity and Lachlan have been best friends since they were teenagers. In truth, they were each other’s only friends. While Lachlan had his brothers and the other kids on the ranch around while growing up, he had a terrible home life. Charity’s father was wonderful. Kind, patient, and very loving. But she was an only child to an older single man who homeschooled her. These two couldn’t be more different, yet fit together perfectly.
The way Lachlan is so clueless about love and relationships is at times endearing and at times frustrating. Yet Charity isn’t much better. Neither had a great role model of what a good relationship is. Now Lachlan’s brothers are in wonderful relationships and he thinks it’ll be some magic wand if he gets married, never thinking of why these marriages helped his brother or how much work they put into them. But I still love the chemistry and connection Charity and Lachlan have and that they both are trying so hard to not hurt each other, even if they are hurting themselves.
I wish there would have been something added to this story about therapy. A significant other cannot be the “savior” for anyone. It’s not that Charity is that for Lachlan exactly, but it’s not like the love of a good woman and a few talks with your big brother will fix all his issues. This is fiction, but I still think with the things this family has been through it would have been nice to have it mentioned.
Charity and Lachlan McCloud have been friends since childhood, and that's all they've ever been. Lachlan has always been a protector when it comes to Charity, but when her father, the local veterinarian passes, he vows to take on his role as her protector seriously. As he watches all of his brothers end up in serious relationships -- and happy despite their traumatic childhoods -- he's determined to find his own happiness. With Charity being engaged and in a long-distance relationship, who else would be the perfect person to help Lachlan get his act together and be the kind of person that someone would marry? But as she begins to help him, it becomes clear that Charity doesn't want anyone else to have him, because Lachlan has always been -- and will always be -- hers.
What I liked about this is you have the childhood best friends-to-lovers dynamic between the two of them and it really just works. I love the fact that she's also slightly messed up here, but together, they bring out the best in each other. I also am absolutely all for Gus being the older brother who just goes off on his younger brothers for being dumb as hell. I enjoyed seeing the two of them together, and of course the romance was fantastic, the spice was fantastic, but it's the chemistry between them that really makes them such a great couple. I still love these books and i'm excited to see who is the next couple in this series.
The Troublemaker is the only book I have read in the Four Corners Ranch series and I doubt I'll read the others.
Lachlan and his brothers grew up with an abusive father. All of the brothers have significant emotional trauma from their childhoods and truly need in depth therapy with professionals trained in helping victims of childhood abuse.
Lachlan wants to marry because he sees his brothers' happiness in their marriages and wants that happiness for himself. He genuinely thinks marriage will somehow magically heal him.
Lachlan marries his best friend Charity. He is so afraid of becoming like his father that he creates problems of his own in their marriage. Charity tries to help him heal but is really not equipped to do so. When she asks the other brothers' wives for advice, they tell her "sex".
I gave this book one star because I don't see happiness in the future of Charity and Lachlan's marriage. I see a future of Charity walking on eggshells to not trigger Lachlan's trauma. Lachlan has already made Charity feel like she did something wrong just because she made him a cake on his birthday. This will be her life.
Friends to Lovers at Four Corners Ranch! I've really enjoyed this series and the intermixing of four ranching families to make one cohesive group, but I felt Charity and Lachlan's story was lacking the oomph it had the potential of giving. I love their characters and the family surrounding them and they had so much potential, but they felt somewhat flat with each other. I wanted more passion, more angst, more fight for forever. I enjoyed seeing the fam again and all that, I just felt like they could have given a better showing.
I recommend this series to anyone that enjoys the small town, rancher trope with lots of mingling of family members and friends to make a nice setting as the series expands.
This was a standard Maisey Yates special with her hot, yet traumatize cowboy, Lachlan and the woman, Charity that loved him. This one featured my favorite trope of friends to lovers that created all the good angst and tension between Lachlan and Charity. This one felt different because Lachlan showed way before his heart on his sleeve, though he didn’t voice them yet, by doing things to take care of her and wanting to take care of her, which I thought was very sweet. Their build up was good. That first kiss was something else as was the passion they shared. It was really good. I did think it dragged a little bit at the end though, but other than that I thought it was really good and probably will be one of my favorites in this series.

I think this is the best writing of the pain of betrayal and the pain of love. This is the 6th book in the 4 Corners series, so we know quite a bit of the pain the McCloud brothers suffered at the hands of their father. In this book we try to understand the emotional pain that Lachlan is suffering and the ways that he tries to “fix it”. Exploring your own emotional pain, deep enough to share with another person is extremely difficult, especially if you have never been given the tools to do so. My heart goes out to all who have struggled like Lachlan. Kudos, Maisey…you got it down perfectly.
I really enjoyed this book. The male character, Lachlan, is strong, viral, and a real cowboy . Charity is a veterinarian so she is a very independent and smart woman . They always been best friends with each other They were never alone & always had each other to confined in.Charity helped Laughlin survive his traumatic childhood and Lachlan in returns, helps her to survive her father‘s passing. They love each other without actually knowing they really Love . Can they find their way into each others heart !!! Well that’s the big question !!! Read this book and you’ll see all the trials and tribulations they go through!!! You won’t regret it !!! A fun read !!
I don’t normally do a 3-star review because I think that is just an undecided review. However, I’m truly undecided. I just felt like I never connected with Lachlan’s true hesitations on love. Also, felt like Charity was a little awkward and quirky, and she overcame that really quickly. If you are familiar with this author’s work, you know she writes a lot of introspection, it can be wordy at times and this book was no different on that aspect. But I really have enjoyed a lot of her books. I really like the Four-Corners Series and still would definitely recommend this book. I wouldn’t have wanted to skip this one. It just didn’t hit the mark for me.
ARC was provided by Edelweiss and the publisher. I also accessed the audiobook version via Hoopla.
This was good. I enjoy Yates's series ... I did Gold Valley and Copper Ridge and I keep picking up these Four Corners Ranch stories. But I wish this had more palpable tension between the two main characters. They both were keeping the other at arms length and both have had feelings since childhood, but it didn't really feel like they felt that deeply for each other. I wish the buildup and the tension had been thicker throughout.
Each book is better than the prior (so far) and I think that speaks volumes about the writer and her characters. These seem like fluffy cowboy romances, but they are really about the traumatized people of Four Corners and their struggles' to escape that. While that sometimes bogs the story down, they are beautiful and you really pull for the characters.
I knew Lachlan and Charity were going to be it for each other, it pulled me in so much more than I thought. Because of their friendship, we had more time with them and I feel that made a big difference. Added to the fact that it wasn't just 30 seconds of a HEA. We really got to spend time with them as they worked things out.
I do wish the HEA ending was more than just a color if pages. I also would have liked and epilogue, I feel sort of cheated.
Wonderful friends to lovers romance. Lachlan and Charity have been friends since she stitched him up in the forest many years ago. Both have issues but deal with the very differently. I
have been waiting to see when they would finally accept what the readers have always know--they belong together. The journey is entertaining. The struggles brought tears. The doubts were many. Enjoyable read.
Another enjoyable four corners ranch book. Lachlan & Charity have their story which has evolved through their deep friendship built over years since they were teenagers. I must say it was another interesting look at great family dynamics & friendship turned to love. I loved the internal struggles Lachlan had yet to resolve but best was his love for Charity & seeing the relationship through . Good HEA. Highly recommend
Friends to lovers story. Her father has died and she is feeling a little at loose ends. Lachlan is the last McCloud and thinks if he gets married he will have the happiness his brothers have with their wives. It isn’t as easy as that unfortunately. It takes a lot more work to have love with Charity.
Short bonus novella called Second Chance Cowboy Penny & Jude Introducing the Kings as the caretaker of Penny when her father went to jail.
Alright, so I love a trope filled romance. But as a dairy farmer I couldn’t get past the fact that this veterinarian wears dresses on calls at farms. It can be dangerous and I’ve never seen a vet wear a dress on a farm in the lifetime I’ve been on the farm. No wonder no one takes this woman seriously. I know a vet school would never let her work on animals in dresses. So…….. this made me mad right at the beginning and it ruined it for me.
Yates takes romance to heart. Her stories plow through the barriers of the soul. From relatable characters to emotional stories and tantalizing romance, she makes a dazzling impression. The Troublemaker is heartache at it's most beautiful. Lachlan and Charity are friendship at it's most enduring and love at it's most vulnerable.
This book started off good but then just got so slow and repetitive. And the change once the marriage happened was frustrating. Also for the constant woe is me act through out, and not trying to grow through the past trauma and realise your better then that just didn’t sit well with me. Very predictable as well. Not my favourite Maisey Yates book.
I couldn't connect with these characters because of the VERY repetitive, long passages of inner thought. This book should have been at least 100 pages shorter and with a lot more show and less tell. I also don't buy into an HEA for these two, only an HFN. By the time they were moving into the possibility of a healthy relationship, the book ended.
This was a slow reading book. I almost got bogged down in some parts, but as I got through it, it all came together. The intricate passion and the sadness of loss. Great story.
Ok. This book started out really great. I loved the storyline and the characters. But it dulled down and it was pretty boring. Sorry! I know! And then it picked up again in the past couple of chapters. Lachlan confused me. How much he changed from one sentence to another.
