Another very beautiful and touching volume, though definitely had a chapter where I was super on edge!! Never expected THAT kind of plot twist! :o
Thankfully everything ends well and everyone grows closer to one another (as well as the importance of being able to rely on others AND rely on others), which once again is one of my favorite parts in this series (though specifically in this volume).
However, I think my ultimate favorite part is the continued consent between them and the mutual respect. Their relationship formed from a pact and resulted in them having forced proximity (though not in a sexual way), but now that they aren't in the pact and have a choice to become physically closer or not, they both really make huge efforts in making sure they don't overstep boundaries (even with something as "simple" as giving a hug). I never expected to see that in an adult romance, but it is SUPER awesome!
This volume also had some fun parts such as the manga-making chapter! It's been fun seeing manga creators make their own manga while reading about it IN a manga. Ha!
Overall, I think this might be my favorite volume yet! I am VERY eager for more volumes in this series and even more stoked for the anime to air! Definitely one to check out if you like clean, fluffy adult romances with an emphasis on family and a touch of fantasy!
Can you exist on nothing but sugar? Here’s hoping, because the boarding house is suffused with hormones as Kuga and Goshiki continue their dance of romance. Other things happen too, but none so important, but certainly more interesting.
Sigh, okay, so, this is a tale of how mood affects your manga reviewer. I was really down on the last volume for dropping most of everything fantastical about this title and dinged it for such.
That is still this volume in a nutshell, but this is too damn sweet not to like. It is nothing but non-stop sweet and pure cuteness that is basically a shojo without the worst tropes of the genre.
Yes, it is absurdly chaste: a night alone for our leads turns into a big old movie marathon rather than anything carnal, for example, but that’s part of the charm of it all. And our leads are not completely without more physical indulgences…
What this does well, however, is veer off its more predestined course and explore some other plots as well. I absolutely adore stories that explore the realm of manga production and here we get Kuga’s manga being wrapped up ahead of when he was hoping to and that’s not something we see very often.
So, he has to address that and my only complaint with the storyline is that it doesn’t get even more in-depth than it does. Cancellation is not that uncommon - hello, Shonen Jump - so seeing it come up is pretty cool and contrasts well with Goshiki’s simultaneous rise to fame with her own work.
Even better, this doesn’t lead to professional jealousy - Goshiki has to deal with the price of the internet existing instead, and Kuga gets an even more interesting opportunity. The romance is solid, but this stuff I would eat up with a spoon.
Of course, the household revolves around Kuga, so when he gets taken out by a medical emergency it causes some believable fretting and the recognition that they have not planned for this eventuality at all.
This grounding in reality bugged me before, but everything here is just sweet and lightness and, coming off some books that tried their best and couldn’t quite reach it, seeing this one just making it all look easy is a real breath of fresh air.
There is the hint of the plot coming back, the occasional nod to Goshiki’s unique physiology, and some very sweet confessions, just not the type you’re expecting. It adds up real fast.
4 stars - back on form, or just hitting the right way at the right time, either way it’s flipping great. And, yes, the kids are still the cutest pair of precocious children in manga history.
This is such an endearing manga. The tone reminds me of Cardcaptor Sakura in a way - everyone has such a good and honest heart. The conflict comes from understanding one's own heart and sharing it with others (and Shiori's family, too, of course). I just feel so good reading it and so positive about other people and the world.
I adore this series a whole lot, and love how the characters and the relationship continue to progress in this volume. Though these two were brought together under circumstances that didn't give them too many options, things have now changed for them. There is no outside connection to keep them together anymore, and I loved seeing how they figure things out without it. I can't wait to see what happens next.
Now that Ichiro and Shiori’s marriage pact has been annulled, they continue to grow closer without the pressure that the marriage pact had once brought them. I love seeing how they continue to communicate and work through any problems that may arise, which also allows them both to further explore their feelings. One of the things that I like is that their determination to keep an open line of communication shows how important communication is, not only with romance, but with all platonic relationships.
It was also really nice to see Ichiro see different sides of the publishing world as an artist while Shiori experiences her first round of honest feedback. I love some of the feedback she received wasn’t amazing because that just wouldn’t be realistic. That said, I love that not only was it mentioned because it’s important to protect yourself from negative feedback, but to also give us a glimpse at Ichiro as a person. It gave us some insight into her life on the island as well as how it concerned her that her first response was to wish she could telepathically change minds, which is not something that she actually wanted to do.
I really love seeing how much all of the characters and their relationships have grown since the first volume. This is truly a light and fluffy “feel good” series. I’m going to be a little sad when I reach the end!
so adorable!! we get some minor conflict and character/relationship growth here...professional jealousy and a small health scare. shiori and ichiro finally begin to call each other by their first names (squee!) and they grow even closer after some personal successes and a night alone (way cuter and more wholesome than it sounds). this series is getting to be sweeter than candy, and I am enjoying it way too much! also, I love how the friendships are focused on as well.

This is just wholesome and fun. The story moves at a nice pace and all the characters get moments to shine. I like the lack of the tropey drama and the focus on quality slice of life stuff. It appears that the next volume will have some family drama and I'm good for that as this series seems to be balancing storylines in all the right ways. On a side note, I'm excited to see how the anime adaptation goes with this one.
I've seen every one and their mother recommend Sweat and Soap for healthy adult relationships and communication between characters, but I really think this should be in the mix as well. It's nothing but healthy communication and talking about expectations within relationships as they grow and change, both romantic and not, which is super awesome! Plus it's super wholesome and sweet! And it's half the volumes compared to Sweat and Soap!
I didn’t enjoy this volume as much because it was heavier on the manga drawing aspect of these characters which is not that interesting to me. However, I think the way the minor issues and insecurities were dealt with was very mature and respectful.
In the end though, I just want to read about these two being in love!
Really enjoying continuing this romance -- it's been fun seeing them work out more of their feelings now that they're not forced to be together, and also how they balance their love-life and busy work schedules.
Our couple is navigating their relationship both with the boarding house and each other after the annulment and it's done very well. Sweet and heartwarming as expected from this series thus far.
This continues to be reliably sweet and comforting. Mostly slice of life and not really any external plot in this one. I love the non-traditional/found family aspect.
It keeps getting cuter and I just love this slice of life manga 🥰 it has me kicking my feet and loving every moment. I can’t wait to see their happy ending but I’m sad to see it end soon.
This was a well balanced volume. There was a lot of growth in this volume, including some side characters, but the author never got lost in the weeds. Everything about this volume was delightful. I enjoyed the sense of family, the dialogue and conflict as the MC & his girlfriend’s careers took different paths, and the charming art used to tell the story.
The group is going closer, opening up more, and learning how to support one another. They're learning that it's okay to lean on others sometimes, and when a medical emergency comes up, those closest to you are a joy, and there when you need them.
