I loved everything about this audio book. Such an enjoyable experience. The characters were charming and memorable. This was my first book by this author and I will read the entire series. The author is so descriptive, all of my senses became involved. A great cozy mystery. Outstanding narrator.

I was blessed with an audio ARC. The opinions expressed are my own and unbiased. Highly recommend.

Miss Atalanta Ashford has been solving mysteries, and while she loves her new home in Paris (inherited from her grandfather), she is feeling restless. She gets a message about a previous case of her grandfather’s at the same time as getting an invitation from Raoul to go with him to the Christmas markets. The message is an invitation to a party in Salzburg, with a message about a secret meeting to discuss jewels that were stolen ten years previously. They decide to combine the trip, since Raoul knows a member of the family from racing.

As Atalanta meets members of the family she starts to question her grandfather’s findings. And, as she and Raoul spend more time together, it’s obvious they have feelings for each other… but less clear what to do about it. When she discovers a dead body, she and others are suspects.

It’s always fun to see how Atalanta solves the crime. My only pet peeve is that she continues to put herself in danger, but that’s fairly common in cozy mysteries. I get that you’ve solved the crime, but have some backup when confronting the person. Just a small issue. On top of the interesting characters and fun sleuthing, I LOVE that I get to experience the different locales that she visits. While they’ve all been wonderful locations, this is the title that drew me to the series. I was supposed to spend a couple of days in Salzburg on my first (only… but more to come!) trip to Europe. When I saw this title months ago, I decided to start with the first, Mystery in Provence.

I really liked the conflict between the head and heart in this one and how Atalanta struggles with loneliness and grief. I love that Renard was more involved as well. I was hoping for that! I have mixed feelings about Raoul but trust that the author will make it all right. Looking forward to the next book!

This was a cozy historical mystery set in the 1930s. It’s the fourth book in the series, but each can be read as a standalone, as they each center around a different location and crime.

Miss Ashford investigates a string of mysteries set across Europe. This time, we travel from Paris to Austria during winter to solve a murder and a decade-old jewelry theft. There’s a wealthy family full of secrets, cozy winter markets, and a love interest who wants to run wild.

That being said, the love interest was the one element I didn’t quite connect with—I wasn’t sure why we, the readers, should care about him. Miss Ashford herself has so much to offer!

There were several possible culprits, and the author did a good job of keeping me guessing. I figured out the solution just before it was revealed, but I appreciated the wide cast of characters—it certainly wasn’t an easy guess.

The audiobook narrator, Jessica Whittaker, is very talented. All the characters had appropriately Austrian accents, and she really managed to bring each person to life—different genders, ages, and personalities were all distinct.

I’m definitely listening to the next book in the series, Death on the Rhine, which takes place on a luxury cruise!

ARC provided by NetGalley and HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter

Last Dance in Salzburg was a delightful read! While I didn’t know going into the book that this was the fourth in its series, I found it quite easy to jump in and understand many of the character’s backstories. I know I’d have gotten more out of them by reading the first three, but not much is lost in starting here.

The story follows Atalanta as she receives a mysterious invitation to a birthday party in Salzburg to learn about a mystery solved by her grandfather ten years prior. While investigating the wrongful imprisonment of a household servant, the mystery evolves to solving a murder!

The storyline felt a little slow for the first third, but quickly picks up once you meet the family in Salzburg. I truly did not see the ending coming, and flew through the last 25% of the book. I will for sure be going back to read the first books in this series to truly appreciate the character development shown in book 4! I loved Salzburg as the setting and this book was beautifully driven by excellent character development across the board. Thanks again to NetGalley and HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter for the ARC!

3.5 ⭐️ rounding up to 4

SLIGHT SPOILERS

This has been a really fun and easy series! I am happy that they finally address the Raoul situation after three books. The mystery itself I found to be a little less mysterious than the previous ones, but as always the description of the landscape and setting was amazing. The one thing I will say about this series is that I’m getting sick of every policeman/investigator/etc. being not just incompetent but also malicious.. I would love for the next one to have a policeman who is willing to work with her, maybe shows her a little interest outside the job, just all around different. I think we see in this book how the relative loneliness of the job has impacted her, and I’d love for that to be addressed in the next book.

Thank you Harper Collins UK & NetGalley for this ARC of the audio.

The Last Dance in Salzburg by Vivian Conroy is a mystery to be solved by Miss Atalanta Ashford. Atalanta had been left her grandfather’s fortune and home and has been encouraged to carry on his business of investigations. She has several under her belt and is contemplating joining her friend, Raoul, in Milan for the Christmas markets as well as the food. Then, she opens another piece of mail containing an invitation to a birthday part in Salzburg, along with a cryptic message about righting a wrong made by her grandfather ten years earlier. She asks Renard, her grandfather’s butler, what he knows of the case but he has no answers. Her grandfather never kept files so that was useless. She decided to see Raoul and maybe take a side trip to this birthday party.

Atalanta is settling nicely into her new life. She wishes desperately to explore a relationship with Raoul, but he stands firm in refusing her. He has no wish for either of them to be hurt. Typical words from a male. Atalanta meets many new people at the birthday party, including a dead body. Everyone knows something about what happened all those years ago and how her grandfather made a mistake and sent the wrong man to prison, but none seem to have the pertinent information. The last bit she needs. Raoul weighs heavy on her mine, but so does her grandfather. There had always been a letter to guide her, but this time there was none. This is a terrific series, filled with human emotion and interesting crimes to solve. The most surprising people commit crimes, as Atalanta is constantly reminded. Well done, Ms. Conroy!

Big Thanks to Netgalley and the Publisher for the advanced copy! I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own

'Last Dance in Salzburg' is the fourth book in the 'Miss Ashford Investigates' series.

The story is quite intriguing, with the mystery being introduced into two cases, a past one that Atalanta's grandfather solved, and the current one that is somehow connected to the old one.

And truly, the mystery was interesting and the author did a great job handling it, even if it felt impossible to figure out what had happened ten years ago.

Furthermore, the main character is quite interesting, and again, the author makes sure that even if you haven't read the previous books, it's easy to understand what happened in them and also keep up with her story. Unfortunately, there were a lot of things that were repeated more than twice, about her feelings about the past and her family, and her wish to have a chance to get to know her grandfather. Though, it was nice that her own feelings and grief was included in the story, as it gave the main character more depth.

Also, Raul was a jerk, and, hence, I loved Atalanta's decision in the end. Her butler is a gem though! The imagery of Salzburg was, in addition, beautiful and this book is actually perfect for winter.

Finally, the audiobook was well narrated and produced.

This is my first outing in this cozy mystery series. Although it works better as a series this worked well as a standalone mystery for me. The narration was excellent with clear distinction between the characters. I really enjoyed the description of all the places that were visited and how the interactions were written with both the 30's (time it set) and an moyre conflicted now world where the value of women and romance etc are not as straightforward as they once seemed. This was a lovely cozy mystery which was a short listen, there were elements of romance and life problems that fed through the entire story. With out prior knowledge of the characters this felt fresh and i enjoyed learning the snipes throughout the story. I did however see overtures with the butler which might be wrong. The mystery itself was all about something that happened 10 years ago her grandfather solved but wasn't happy with the result. It has mystery, revenge, betrayal, love and longing. The who done it certainly more than the usual a to b and i love the way it was revealed. i may check out past or future. the relationship with the racing driver which was a will they or wont they seemed to be the ultimate hook regardless of the mystery. Highly recommended for anyone who like a good cozy mystery set in good surroundings. Thank you netgalllery, publisher author and narrator.

I really enjoyed this book. It is a very cosy murder mystery in the Miss Ashford Investigates series of books. This is the fourth book in the series, and you don't need to have listened to the previous three to be able to enjoy this story. It probably helps as there are mentions of the earlier cases, but it doesn't stop the enjoyment of the book.

The main character, Atalanta Ashford is a very interesting woman. She has inherited a lot of money from her Grandfather, and has entered into his world of private investigations, but she doesn't really know what she wants. She clearly loves her friend Raoul, but his feelings towards her are very mixed.

The narrator is very good at bringing you into the story. She has a very warm voice, which is perfect for the character of Atalanta.

Although this is a very enjoyable book, it is a bit too slow for me. It takes a long time to get to the actual murder mystery part of the book, and I was tempted once or twice to dnf it.

I was thrilled to be invited to read this fourth book following Atalanta Ashford and her newfound career as a private detective. This book didn’t disappoint at all. Full of twists and turns, further exploration of Atalanta’s blossoming relationship with Raoul, and revelations about her grandfather’s past, this book quickly gets going and had me turning the pages eagerly. Another terrific mystery solved by our heroine! I can’t wait for her next adventure.

Fun series

I am enjoying this series. I love the characters and the places they visit. I don't usually read mysteries to try and figure them out. It is fun to follow the clues with the detective and find the solution with them.

This was a delightful mix of intrigue, romantic angst, looking back, wishing things had been different, finding oneself, deciding what is most important in your life, and history. Quite a mixture, huh? And, I didn't even mention that murder is involved. Actually, let me back up. It begins with a mysterious invite to attend a ballet in Salzburg. It's to honor both an 18th birthday celebration and anniversary of a jewel heist of a sapphire necklace at the same location. The invitation is sent to Atalanta's late grandfather, Clarence Ashford, but she is intrigued enough by the wording to be determined to attend in his place.

Just as she might be wavering, handsome, flirtatious Raoul appears and agrees to go with her. I'm not going to detail the plot other than to say that initially much of it seems focused on Atalanta's romantic yearnings for Raoul, a famous race car driver. We get a peek into his childhood this go-round, one that helps explain his determination not to become seriously involved with Atalanta. In any case, who murdered the man just released from prison for the theft of the sapphire necklace. It's all wrapped up in the past, of course, meaning Atalanta has two cases to solve to her satisfaction. There are also a host of potential suspects for the murder Alalanta stumbles across while chasing after....oh, I think I'll leave that for you to find out. It's all part of the overall mixed bag of themes mentioned. Alalanta, whose name means "huntress", is caught between yearning for a dance with Raoul and finding a murderer, not to mention protecting her late grandfather's reputation. An impulsive young ballerina eloping with her somewhat older beau complicates things.

Bottom line, I liked Atalanta and despite her frustration with Raoul, came away with more respect for him than in the past. Respect and a sense of sadness at his personal baggage. His comment about how a passion become an obsession was telling of his own parent's relationship. Even the stuffy upper crust characters largely came across sympathetically. Renard, who was her grandfather's butler, while admitting even he doesn't know the full truth of the stolen sapphire case her grandfather investigated, plays a vital role this go-round. I've barely touched the surface here but if you like stories set in fabulous setting that are quite character driven, you'll like this once you settle into the slower pace. Thanks #HarperCollinsUK - #OneMoreChapter for allowing me to take a virtual time travel trip back to November 1930 to catch up early with the complicated, intriguing Atalanta.

Last Dance in Salzburg is the fourth book in Vivian Conroy's Miss Ashford Investigates series, and is a delightful addition to the cozy historical mystery genre. Despite being new to the author and this series, I found the writing style welcoming and easy to follow, making it simple to dive straight into the story.

The slower pace initially gave me pause, as I usually gravitate towards faster-moving plots, but it turned out to be a perfect match for the cozy, atmospheric tone of the book. I’m eager to explore the earlier titles in the series to learn more about Atalanta Ashford and her background, as I do love a classic murder mystery with a strong, engaging protagonist.

The setting was one of my favorite aspects. Salzburg, a beautiful city in Austria, is a place I’ve visited multiple times, and it’s what drew me to the book in the first place. Vivian Conroy captures its charm beautifully, painting vivid and magnificent descriptions that transported me right back to its historic streets and grand stately homes.

The mystery begins intriguingly, with Atalanta receiving a mysterious invitation addressed to her late grandfather. This leads her to Salzburg, accompanied by her friend Raoul, to attend a birthday party featuring an exclusive ballet performance. What starts as a curious investigation quickly unravels into a web of lies, power, and danger. The historical details felt authentic, adding depth and a sense of time and place to the twisty, engaging investigation.

However, while I appreciated the dynamic between Atalanta and Raoul, I felt their romantic tension was a little overemphasized. The “will they, won’t they” dynamic detracted from the mystery’s momentum and felt drawn out.

Overall, Last Dance in Salzburg is an atmospheric and engaging read for fans of cozy historical mysteries. It blends a compelling plot with evocative settings, and I look forward to reading more in the series to see where Atalanta’s adventures take her next. The next book has been announced and it's set on a river cruise on the Rhine, Germany which is another of my favourite places.

review to followThis was such a delightful historical cozy mystery with the added element of continental travels and a touch of romantic angst. Our plucky protagonist, Atalanta, inherits her grandfather's estate with the hope that she will continue with his investigatory services. She receives a cryptic birthday party invitation intended for her grandfather and decides, perhaps she'll pay tribute in his absence and do a bit of sleuthing on the side. She'll just use a continental visit to dishy care-racer friend Raul and the Munich holiday market as a ruse to check out the Salzburg birthday bash. One thing leads to another, a body is found and she's now on the case.

Frankly, author Vivian Conroy had me at the mere mention of Salzburg, my absolute favorite city in the world. It is very walkable and has a tremendous amount of old world charm and live music on every street corner which Ms. Conroy so deftly brough to bear. The mise en scène is cinematic in scope and as such, one could easily smell the cinnamon and clove emanating from the shops, here the gentle clop of horse hooves on the cobble stone streets, and imagine the large castle looming over its city. The wardrobe and food descriptions were equally fine. The writing is smooth and the banter between Atalanta and Raul, most charming. There were a number of red herrings and a few fun surprises making this engaging story move steadily along. The tension builds gradually to a peak and then gently subsides to a most satisfying conclusion. This was the perfect read leading into the holidays and I eagerly look forward to more books in this series.

Even though this was the fourth book in series and I had not previously read the other three, I found that there were sufficient fleshed-out references to earlier occurrences that I was not asea while reading this story.

I am grateful to Ms. Conroy and her publisher, One More Chapter, for having provided a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. Their generosity, however, has not influenced this review - the words of which are mine alone.

One of the best cosy murder mysteries I've read, and I've read a lot of them!

Atalanta is invited to Salzburg, to a ballet dance on the anniversary of a jewel robbery, one that made her Grandfather's name. Only she's told that he made a mistake and the wrong person went to jail. Can she discover the truth? History is repeating itself, only this time, there is more than just thievery in the air.

A brilliant premise, that is just different enough from other books to really draw the attention.
Atalanta is a fun MFC, she has a lot of spirt and comes across as very likeable. I'm not sold on her love interest however, I don't especially like him and cannot work out where he fits into all of this long term.

We were nearly halfway through the book before the murder even happened because this is about more than the murder. It explores being lonely, destiny, what you want from life, how far you are prepared to go and what you'd give up to achieve what you think is right. Or your duty. There are a lot of themes running through this book, along with the history of the area, of all the damage caused by shifting nations and allegiances. Of course Atalanta solves the case, is able to right the wrong her grandfather tried to do but couldn't. That is fairly predictable, but the journey is the important part, and it was utterly engaging and entertaining.

This audio sounds exactly how I'd always imagined a cosy murder mystery. The narrator is brilliant at capturing the innocent yet determined MFC, in conveying all the pain, confusion as she tries to navigate this life she's found herself in. She really does a great job at conveying the story and making me feel relaxed. As well as capturing the cold weather, which in this current heat, I so badly need.

This is my first book by this author, but it won't be the last.

Book Review: Last Dance in Salzburg by Vivian Conroy

Rating: Solid 3 Stars

I recently picked up Last Dance in Salzburg by Vivian Conroy, and it was a cozy escapade through the wintery charm of 1930s Austria. The story follows Miss Atalanta Ashford, who finds herself attending a ballet in the picturesque city of Salzburg. What starts as an enchanting evening quickly turns dark when a notorious jewel thief is discovered dead in the concert hall—a location linked to a heist from ten years earlier. It begs the question: did he come back to clear his name, or is there something more sinister at play among the elegant crowd?

As much as I wanted to love this book, I found the pacing a bit sluggish at times. The mystery unfolds slowly, which had me flipping pages with more curiosity than urgency. However, the setting of Salzburg is simply enchanting; the vivid descriptions of the snowy streets filled with the aromas of Glühwein and Lebkuchen brought a delightful atmosphere to the story.

What really stood out for me, though, was the character development. Atalanta's journey was intriguing, especially her evolving relationship with Raoul and the surprising revelations about her grandfather's past. This blend of romantic tension and mystery kept me invested, and I appreciated how the author fleshed out her characters.

The ending was satisfying and tied up loose ends nicely, leaving me with a sense of closure that I always appreciate. Overall, while Last Dance in Salzburg had its slow moments, the beautiful setting and rich character arcs made it an enjoyable read. I’d give it three stars—definitely worth a look for fans of cozy historical mysteries!

I received a copy of this title from the publisher, but all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own. Last Dance in Salzburg is the latest book to follow the exploits of Atalanta who inherited her grandfather's investigation agency and all of his money, despite the fact that he was estranged from her father. This lack of knowing her grandfather is weighing heavily on Atalanta throughout this book and influences her actions. She agrees to visit Raoul in Munich to visit the Christmas markets while he waits for word of a race on an icy lake. Atalanta has an ulterior motive in that she received an invitation to a party hosted by her grandfather's old school friend; the invitation includes a hand-written note indicating that her grandfather sent an innocent man to prison for stealing jewels 10 years prior. When she arrives, she finds no shortage of possible suspects including her host and his family. During the actual party, the wrongfully accused, recently released from prison, turns up dead and Atalanta herself is a suspect. She finds herself trying to prove not only her own innocence, but that of an 18-year-old girl. I liked the mystery in this one as well as Atalanta's continuing quest to figure out exactly who she is as well as come to terms with the fact that she'll never be able to know her grandfather in the way she would like to. I look forward to future titles in the series.

My thanks for the ARC goes to NetGalley and HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter. I'm voluntarily leaving a review.

Genre: Cozy Mystery, Historical Mystery, Mystery Thriller
Violence Level: Low-Medium (Yes, there's a body but I didn't think it was too graphic.)
Spice Level: Nothing on the page
Readability: You don't have to read these in order, but the relationships will feel deeper and more complex if you do.

Atalanta is one of my favorite detectives. Her adventures are set in an interesting time period, and I love seeing Europe through her eyes at this time. LAST DANCE IN SALZBURG lived up to my expectations. And I happen to like Raoul as a character—we have car racing in my family, so that might factor into this. Racing in the 30s was a different beast than what it's like today, but still incredibly dangerous.

Relationships are strained, there are family secrets, lies, distrust, and dancing (as per the title). I'm in love with dancing in books—this one is a treat because we get waltzing and ballet! My one complaint were the number of characters whose name started with the letter R! Why? Just why do this and make it hard for me to keep track. I also loved how this mystery centered around missing jewels; it reminded me of some of the old Sherlock Holmes cases.

Is the mystery tricky enough for reading sleuths? I thought it was. There is one clue that is the tipping point for Atalanta.

I highly recommend this book and series.

Happy reading!

Hi and welcome to my review of Last Dance in Salzburg!

Last Dance in Salzburg is the fourth instalment of the Miss Ashford Investigates series. Four books had been announced in this series, Miss Atalanta Ashford has taken her faithful readers to Provence, Santorini and Tuscany, and now to Salzburg, Austria, but I was so happy to find out a fifth book is in the works, I’d hate having to say goodbye to Atalanta forever! For those who are new to the series, you can just jump in here, I’m confident that you’ll be able to follow just fine.

Atalanta, who came from rather modest means, has become an heiress, not only inheriting her grandfather’s fortunes but also his sleuthing business. And now, Atalanta receives an invitation, not only to an exclusive birthday party, including a ballet performance, but also to meet a certain V. in the library at midnight. If it sounds ominous, it’s because it is!

Before long, Atalanta stumbles (quite literally) over a dead body, and soon, she’s questioning everything and everyone, including her grandfather, and herself.

I had a ball with Last Dance in Salzburg! I always enjoy Vivian Conroy’s historical cosy murder mysteries and Last Dance in Salzburg was exactly what I expected it to be, even if I did think there was a bit too much emphasis on Atalanta’s will-they-won’t-they (or should-they-shouldn’t-they) relationship with Raoul. I would happily recommend it to fans of cosy murder mysteries, and meanwhile, I’ll be waiting for Atalanta to take me on a river cruise down the Rhine in book no. 5!

Last Dance in Salzburg is out now in digital formats and paperback.

Massive thanks to One More Chapter and Netgalley for the DRC. All opinions are my own.

This is an entertaining read.
Set in the beautiful city of Salzberg in the 1930s, Miss Ashford is following in her grandfather’s footsteps as an amateur sleuth. She receives an invitation to a birthday party in Salzburg. Amid lies and deception, she sets out to right a wrong and correct an injustice.
I loved the way the author was able to immerse the reader in the beautiful narrative, describing the sights and sounds of Salzburg in the 1930s. The story weaves an engaging mystery and blends a suspenseful plot around an old secret. This novel is part of a series, and although new to me, I am going to explore the other books available. However, this one, works well as a standalone mystery.

The narrator for the audiobook was great, using voices and accents for the
characters, adding depth and character to the performance, keeping me entertained throughout.

The characters were interesting. Atalanta, was charming and vividly drawn, Raul was a strange character, and I’m not entirely sure what he brought to the story. Nevertheless, I loved the butler and enjoyed the beautiful prose and rich detail, bringing a city and its history vividly to life. The novel explores loss and the power of a secret passed down through generations.
If you love a cosy mystery this is a lovely story to enjoy.

Thank you to NetGalley for the audio ARC of Last Dance in Salzburg by Vivian Conroy.

This is the 4th book in the Miss Ashford mysteries but my first one. Miss Atalanta Ashford was a teacher at a prestigious Swiss boarding school when she found out that her grandfather who she had never met had died. She inherits his Parisian home, a substantial fortune as well as a job. She must carry on his legacy of discreetly sleuthing for Europe’s elite.

The first three books are set out in Provence, Santorini and Tuscany. This book is set in a wintery Salzburg, Austria. Because of the 1930’s setting the story is slightly old fashioned but it makes you think of Atalanta as a more glamorous Agatha Christie.

Atalanta receives an invitation to a birthday and ballet addressed to her grandfather. On the back of the invitation is the inscription: “You know you made a mistake ten years ago. Set an old injustice right. Library, midnight. V.” Who is the mysterious V and what mistake was made? Whoever sent the invitation obviously doesn’t know that her grandfather has passed away. She decides to attend the ballet with her friend, the rakish race car driver, Raoul Lamont.

Soon there is a dead body in the library and a ballerina has gone missing. This is a cozy mystery filled with vintage vibes, Glühwein and Lebkuchen.

I was given an advanced reader copy of this book in audiobook format via Netgalley in return for an honest review.

As always I will start this review with the narration . At frist I wasn't sure what to think it started off a bit dull but as the story really started and we got to know the characters it changed and improved greatly. Each character had their own voice and accents which helped make them more real and easier to identify.

In this story we meet Miss Atalanta Ashford who is finding life and Paris a bit lonely especially as winter and the festive season starts. She has no family and yer she feels as if there are expectations of being The mistress of a well to do house.

She is saved from these thoughts when an invite arrives from her friend to meet him in Munich and see the sites and explore the German festive markets. It may be just what she needs.

And then the invite to Salzburg arrives with a mysterious post script and she is left uncertain. She decides to go and see what she will discover.

Its a lovely a brilliant cozy mystery. Fans of Agatha Christie will enjoy these stories.

Introduction

📖 In the delightful historical mystery Last Dance in Salzburg by Vivian Conroy, listeners are invited back to a snowy 1930s Salzburg where Miss Atalanta Ashford is invited to a ballet on the anniversary of a famous jewel heist. What begins as a charming winter holiday soon turns into a murder investigation when a convicted thief is found dead at the concert hall—the very place where the original crime occurred a decade prior. This cozy mystery is the fourth in the Miss Ashford Investigates series, but it works very well as a standalone, making it easy for new listeners to jump right in.

This is the first Miss Ashford Investigates that I've read. I suspect that I might have enjoyed this more if I'd started at #1. There were a lot of references to previous investigations and to the back history of why Atalanta Ashford is now a private investigator. Some of it seemed a bit odd - why would the fact her grandfather was a detective mean that she would be any good as a detective - there were repeated references to her taking up her grandfather's legacy.
The basic story was good and the unravelling well explained- a servant was convicted of a robbery 10 years ago following an investigation by her grandfather but it is suggested that he made a mistake and this person was not actually the culprit - Atalanta is invited to come to Salzburg to meet the mysterious V (we never discover who this is) but shortly after arrival a murder occurs and so Atalanta has to solve the murder and the robbery. But the style of writing - lots of repetition of what Atalanta is thinking and feeling - started to annoy me at an early stage. For me, therefore, this was a 3.5*, although I've rounded it up to a 4.

Miss Ashford Investigates #4

Atlanta receives a mysterious invitation that was addressed to her granddad. It's for a ballet in Salzburg. Atlanta accepts the invitation and attends in her granddad's place. Raoul agrees to go with her. She learns about a mystery that was solved by her granddad ten years ago. He had been investigating the wrongful imprisonment of a servant.

The story is set in Salzburg and it has been descriptively written. Atlanta is a well-developed character who is quite likeable. Atlanta has feelings for Raoul, a famous race car driver. A man who has just been released from prison for stealing a sapphire necklace ten years ago, has been murdered. Atlanta now has two cases to solve. We get family secrets, lies, and a good old fashioned murder mystery. I'm really liking this series.

If you enjoy cosy historical mysteries written in a classic murder mystery style with glamorous European locations, the Atalanta Ashforc cosy crime stories are perfect. When Atalanta receives a mysterious note addressed to her dead grandfather, she has to pursue it. Already attending the Gena Christmas markets, she persuades her friend, racing driver Raoul, to take her to Salzburg. Soon, as a house guest, Atalanta witnesses history repeating itself. Embroiled in a deadly web of lies and power, Atalanta has to find the courage to face the past and the dangerous present and solve the mystery. I like Atalanta; she is courageous, impulsive, intelligent, and someone you invest in. Her romantic woes show her naivety and contrast with her investigative abilities. I like the sinister ethos created and the mystery that echoes the past and brings danger to Atalanta. I enjoyed the historical and locational details that add authenticity. Most of all, I enjoyed the twisty investigation.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher.
