Men in Charge #1

Make Her Mine

Rate this book
A single mom, small town romance . . .

She was always the one who got away.

Rosaleigh caught my eyes from the beginning,
but I didn't make my move.

She was just too young.

Unfortunately, my best friend didn't have the same morals.
It killed me, watching from a distance as he disrespected the woman who was always meant to be mine.

When she finally discovers the truth about him, all bets are off.
I'm done holding back.
I make my move, ready to prove she has a real man now -- one who will have her back and give her the life she deserves.

I won't let anything stop me.
She's not getting away again.
I'm going to make her mine.

This is the first book in the series, Men in Charge.
Each book will be a complete stand-alone. The common denominator?
An alpha hero who goes after what he wants, a guaranteed happily ever after, and of course steamy romance!

Okay, so I really loved Nix and Rosaleigh’s love story!!! At the beginning of the book, Rosaleigh discovers that her husband David is a scumbag when he leaves her and their two daughters. That’s when Nix steps up. He takes care of both Rosaleigh and her daughters, Rory and Emmy, and even though she knows she shouldn’t, she can’t help but fall for him. I thought this was really fun and sweet, it had minimal angst and so many laugh out loud moments. Rory and Emmy were both so great, and I loved how devoted Nix was to them, not just Rosaleigh. For me, Nix was the ultimate swoony hero, he was protective of Rosaleigh and the girls and he would do anything to make them happy. And Rosaleigh!!! I loved watching her go from being frazzled and stressed to happy and fulfilled. 5 freaking stars!!!

This was a great second chance romance. Leigh is a strong woman and great mother. Rosaleigh and Phoenix’s story is a beautiful and heartbreaking story. I loved Phoenix. Maker Her Mine was my first book that I had read by Tory Baker. I loved it. I can't wait to read more by her. I hope that there will be a continuation of the series.

Finally His

Tory totally blew me away with this book!

First, hello gorgeous cover! 😍

I really appreciated the balance of storyline/plot and romance/steam. The story was so well crafted that I easily was able to get lost in the world Tory created.

There is something to be said for a romance that has the messy true-to-life elements to it. I really feel drawn to those stories more, and Tory tackled so much of that with Nix and Leigh's story.

Having to balance a pre-teen and teen into the storyline and relationship building takes a lot of skill, and Tory really nailed it. Keeping them part of the relationship and also showing their personalities in the storyline as well.

Real, raw, and honest...that's how I'd sum this one up. And I loved every minute of it.

This was fine, it was just boring. By 60% in I was ready to be done. Literally nothing happened. No drama, nothing. It was just a day by day accounting of their lives. It’s a sweet story if you just want something low angst that doesn’t get your blood pressure up even by a point. I was hoping I found a new series to get into but I don’t think I’ll be continuing.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC copy of this book. It was perfect because I could hardly wait for it to release. Tory Baker blew me away yet again. She totally rocked this story!!

Nix is completely amazing and I fell head over heels, just a couple chapters in. Rosaleigjh is awesome, she truly is an inspiration. After tragedy stuck Rosaleigh made a life for herself and her two girls. Nix was always there to help as well as his family.

Nix has always been in love with her and she has let her feelings grow for him as well. There journey turns into a beautiful love story.

I really can’t say enough about how amazing this book is, it will definitely leave you smiling.

Thank you to Smuthood tours and Tory Baker for providing me with a free copy of this book.

This was a super sweet book it starts off with Rosaleigh's husband walking out on her and her kids, the story continues 10 months later when Leigh's neighbor and ex's best friend has been helping her with her two kids.

Being so close since her breakup feelings begin to grow and sparks begin to ignite.

This story was so sweet I adored how much Nix cared for Leigh and her kids he truly loved those kids. I completely fell in love with him. The spice was also incredible and Nix was incredibly hot.

This was a 3 star read for me only because at times I found the book a little bit hard to follow and I think I would've liked to see a little more of a buildup of tension between Nix and Leigh. That being said that's just personal preferance, I still enjoyed the book and I would absolutely recommend it!

Great read

I really enjoyed this one! It was a fun, easy read as it flowed well and had me engaged from beginning to end. I loved the James girls and they had me laughing at times for sure. I loved how Nix was with all of them. This one was definitely an adorable read because of the way that all cared for one another. It was cute and once I started it, I didn’t want to stop. I’ll definitely be reading more in this series and by this author.

Make Her Mine is the first book in the Men in Charge series. This one involves Rosaleigh and Phoenix (Nix). I thought this one was a very sweet, yet very steamy romance. Nix has been in love with Rosaleigh for years. Now that she is back on her feet after her husband left her, he is determined to make her his. I was really rooting for this couple. Rosaleigh had so much weighing on her and she deserved to find some happiness. I loved the relationship that Nix had with her daughters. It felt genuine and was just so sweet. I do recommend this one and look forward to the next in the series.

Not my favorite book by Tory it was a little drawn out and the denouement was pretty anti-climactic with the errant criminal husband. Rosaleigh is a single mom who was put in the lurch when her husband flies the coop amidst criminal allegations...I'm not sure how long he is gone but she's left with his crap: debts and dilemmas on top of taking care of her kids. Thankfully she has Phoenix Dakos and his family who have been with her since the beginning. Phoenix has an unrequited love for Rosaleigh; he's always had a thing for her but once she was too young, and then her shady ex-husband swooped in and trapped her into a loveless marriage, and through it all he's sat in the background bidding his time. When her husband abandons her and her girls; Phoenix finally has his moment! AND HE'S NOT MESSING AROUND. He's already involved with the family's day to day, but now he's making his presence known and permanent. Their relationship is intense. I liked all the relationships between the Dakos family and Rosaleigh's family. I even liked that she included her ex-husband's family but there's a lot redundance with explaining how often she includes his parents. There are few grammatical issues but I'm sure those will be sorted out by the editor. I do like that both Phoenix and Rosaleigh FINALLY get their HEA. One thing I didn't like was that despite Rosaleigh knowing her ex-husband is a criminal and he's on the run she didn't think to secure her house.....um WTF! And even when he shows up her first thought is not calling the cops because she's worried about her kids seeing him be arrested (Um girl fyi your kids already know he's a criminal and honestly, I'm pretty sure they would rather him be in jail and out of their life considering it's her kid that ACTUALLY calls the cops). Everything is basically handled by Phoenix, which is I guess his possessive alpha like personality but I kind of wish she was more on top of things like that instead of having the man handle it. She was independent in everything else so that was a big oversight on her part. All in all a good story just not my fav.

Rosaleigh Michelle James, at fifteen, got pregnant just like her mother did, and married the father of her baby. Nineteen-year-old, David James by all accounts should have gone, to jail for statutory rape. He was lucky she had, a dumb-as-dirt mom because it took everything for, Ophelia, Ya-Ya, Nix, and, Papou not, to beat David with a bat. When they find out he basically raped her. You see Ophelia and, Leigh are best friends, and she spent all of her free time at, Ophelia’s house, instead of dodging the men at her mom’s house.

Phoenix “Nix” Drakos, is a man every other man strives, to be. He is or was, David’s best friend. He is also the one when, Leigh indeed looks back in the past, her first crush. He is also the girl's godfather. When his parents wanted to move he bought the house that is right across the street from Leigh, Rory, and Emmy. When David sneaks away leaving the girls, to deal with the sh*t show mess he’s left. Leigh only has, to go across the street, to ask for help. Nix being an alpha male puts his best foot first, but knows when to tread, lightly because Leigh is, barely hanging on.

The girls are and have been extremely attached, to Nix. It seems David has always been emotionally unavailable as physically. So, the loss although dramatic is, more permanent and public, so there are abandonment issues for the girls. They want, to know where their mom is, at all times. They are all on the app, in real-time. Now, they have asked, Nix if he would be on it, too. Leigh told them that is, asking too much of him, but he said no. That he knew it would make them feel better, and he would feel included.

This is such an interesting, and funny book, about blending a family. The way it starts, under the worst conditions. But, with at least one loving parent and a village, good things can happen. Two people who were always meant, to find their way, to each other via circumstances, children, and most of all love.

Nix is my idea of a swoon-worthy hero. He is an alpha male, grumpy, protective and very family-oriented. Doing the honorable thing cost him his chance with Rosaleigh when they were teenagers. Now that her husband, his ex best friend, is soon to be her ex, he is not about to let to let anyone else claim her. Rosaleigh’s ex left her and their two daughters in tough financial straights and the subject of rumours. His corruption and ties to the drug cartel led him to disappear without a trace, with all of his debts left to Rosaleigh to sort out. Nix and his family have always looked out for Rosaleigh since she was young teenager, and now they have stepped up their efforts to take care of her and her daughters. She is slow to realize that Nix is wanting much more than just friendship with her, but when he finally makes her aware of just what he wants, resistance is futile. Things get hot, steamy and wonderful, and Nix is very determined to protect his girls when her ex reappears. Nobody is going to hurt his girls…. he will see to it.

I loved the characters, as well as the family dynamics between Rosaleigh and her daughters and also among Nix’s family. Their relationships illustrate unconditional love and support that everyone should have in their lives. Nix’s interactions with Rosaleigh’s daughters are heart-melting and make him even more of a hero. This book induces laughter, sighs and great big beaming smiles.

3.5 stars.

This book, while it had its issues, had one of the best heroes I've read about in some time in the form of Phoenix. He'd always loved Rosaleigh, the heroine, but never acted upon it because he was 4 years older than her. Well, his best friend at the time wasn't so upstanding, because he got her pregnant and then married her. When the story started, Rosaleigh was just finding out that her husband was on the run from the cartel. I loved Emmy and Rory, Rosaleigh's girls, and felt awful for the three of them, but Phoenix was there to shield them and help them through. I loved his dedication to Rosaleigh's daughters, spending time with them, teaching Emmy about cars, and just talking to them. And his care for Rosaleigh...I loved that when he finally decided to make his move, he wanted to take things slowly for both her and her girls' sake, and this was after waiting 13 years. So, yeah, Phoenix totally stole the show. I did love that Rosaleigh's ex's parents stayed involved in their lives after everything happened, and watching Rosaleigh's close relationship with Phoenix's parents, and her best friend Ophelia, who was Phoenix's sister. They made a great little family. The writing, though, is what really brought this down for me with some very long sentences, conversations that made no sense, and it just threw me off at points. And yet, I'm giving this 3.5 stars, because Phoenix and his devotion, and Rosaleigh and her little family were great to read about. Oh, and the steam was fun, too.

Rosaleigh was married when she became pregnant at a young age. She is a family oriented woman with two children and loved, protected and cared for them. Her husband works as a policeman. Her husband disappeared suddenly and it was found out he was involved with drug smugglers. Rosaleigh was just trying to survive this nightmare and be there for her kids. Nix lived across the street from her and he had started to help with whatever he could do. Rosaleigh has known Nix since they were children. Nix is a take charge type guy. He has been in love with her since she was sixteen. He was waiting for her to grow up before he put a move on her and asked her for a date. Well, his best friend took that away from him. Now Nix was going to pursue Rosaleigh but he would do it slowly. There is great chemistry between them but also humor, hotness and sweet, heartwarming love and warmth and tenderness for the whole family. It is all about what family is, the ups and downs of romance, love and a feel good romance. The characters make this story come to life, you feel what’s happening. The characters are very likable and down-to-earth and very lovable. I also like how the author weaved her story - it had an easy flow, natural. I really enjoyed the story. What happens when your only love ends up with someone else? The story continues. Great read!.

Make Her Mine is the 1st book in the new Men In Charge Series featuring Nix and Leigh's beautifully written friends to lovers romance. Phoenix fell for Rosaleigh when he first saw his younger sisters best friend in high school but he's a few years older than she is and he feels that she's too young for anything yet. Unfortunately his snake of a best friend David didn't feel the same way and he moved in on Leigh like a predator and he made sure that their lives would be tied together. Nix is never friends with David again after he gets Leigh pregnant but him and his family are always there for Leigh no matter what. Rosaleigh is completely unprepared for and is blindsided by David's betrayal it's just her and her two daughters that are left to deal with the fallout from what he did. Nix is right there waiting to help his girls with whatever they need because if his ex best friend was dumb enough to throw them away then he's keeping them he's waited long enough for Leigh. Nix shows Leigh that she can always count on him to be there to protect her and her girls so how could she not start planning for a future with him? You really need to read this beautiful book to see what happens between Nix and Leigh as they embark on an emotional journey to their HEA. I would definitely recommend reading this book and I'm looking forward to the next book in this series.

➡️MY THOUGHTS:
What worked for me:
➕ The Spice was 👌🏻👍🏻🔥
➕The characters were sassy and interesting
➕The story was romantic as hell
➕Nix is Book boyfriend goals!
➕Super quick, short chapters!
➕Did I mention the swoony-ness of Nix?

What didn’t work for me:
➖Somehow the story felt rushed AND too slow at the same time. First, I felt like the plot was slowly dragged out, with not much happening. but at the same time the 2 main characters were talking about getting together from the start 🤔 The female main character was all about the husbands best friend, and vice versa. There really wasn’t any warming up to the idea, they were both like “let’s do this” 🤔
➖ The typos/grammar issues. I am not a stickler for this by any means. But the incorrect spelling of/ and use of words, as well as inconsistent punctuation…. these issues were rampant, which actually made it complicated for me to follow the story and dialogue at times. This led to the story being less enjoyable for me. I was actually a bit confused toward the end of the story.

Overall the story was sweet, enjoyable, and a was a quick, steamy read.

This is book number 1 of the Men in Charge series and focuses on Nix and Rosaleigh. Nix has wanted to be with Rosaleigh since she was a young teenager but he wanted her to be able to live life a little bit before he made his move. Instead his best friend, David, jumped on the opportunity to have her and ended up getting her pregnant while she was only 15. Years later, Leigh is left to clean up the mess David left behind when he left town without a backwards glance. Nix and his family were right there to help pick up the pieces and get Rosaleigh and her girls back on their feet. Nix has been bidding his time until he could finally make Rosaleigh his and when he had the opportunity he took it and didn't let go. The way he loved Rosaleigh and her girls so fiercely was absolutely wonderful! He knew what he wanted and did everything he could to take care of his girls and to make sure they only knew love and protection. Nix and Rosaleigh were absolutely perfect together! I loved seeing two people so clearly meant to be together finally find their way to each other and to go into the relationship with arms wide open. I can't wait to see what else this series will bring us!

This was such a great read about second chance at love and the determination to go after what you want, this single parent romance was beautiful and heartwarming.

Nix has been in love with Rosaleigh since the moment he met her unfortunately he didn't acted on it because she was too young for him but that didn't stop his then best friend, he lost the opportunity and watched the woman he love made a life with someone else but that didn't stop him to watch over her and her daughters always being present when they need him. So when Rosaleigh's husband and ex-best friend thats the unthinkable leaving her and their daughters in chaos, Nix steps right in protecting and caring for the woman he always love and the girls he cares so much about.

Talk about swoonworthy heros, Nix stole the show. He is determined to make Rosaleigh his, constantly showing what a precious and beautiful woman and mother she is and once she realises that Nix is the right man for her, things get hot and steamy. Their chemistry is totally over the top incredible.

Loved this story and I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

This was my first Tory Baker book and have to admit halfway through it I bought the rest of the series. The book is that good. She nails the feelings and the just putting one foot ahead of the other to make it through the day. I can relate to it having married into a family of mom plus 4, 7 yr olds. I saw what my wife did on a daily basis, and it’s so well explained in this book. And though I’m not Nix in the book the things he does for Leigh are only done by a man so fully in love with the woman that he’s consumed by her and his love for her.

Loved the story and the final confrontation between Nix and David is well done, I’ve had a few of those and she nailed the feelings of Nix that David would have to step over his dead body to get to Leigh and the kids and that would never happen.

Tory also did a great job with the ex’s parents in that they raised him better, and they are still loving grandparents to her kids. So, they deserve to be that and have that experience of spoiling the grandkids. Just because David made bad choices did not mean he was raised to do so. Absolutely loved this book and have started the next one. Highly recommend this book spend your money on this one you won’t be disappointed.

Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️.5

When I tell y’all that I ATE THIS BOOK UP! I’ve been sick for almost a week and haven’t be able to physically do much, so I’ve been reading! I read a book I found on TikTok and it was okay, but not the best. I was talking to Queen Tory herself and the comments she made about it only made me want to read her books even more. So I finished the one I was reading and dove head first into this beauty here!

It’s no secret that I don’t like small town romance, or friends to lovers 🤣 but I absolutely ADORED this book! Nix might just be my newest book husband! The Prologue had me hooked and I couldn’t put it down! I finally fell asleep reading it at like 11 last night and woke up at started again at 7 this morning when I woke up. There was no lull between big events. It was fast paced and the WHOLE book was enjoyable!

The spice was amazing without overpowering the storyline of the book! I have been in somewhat of a book slump with the chaos that has been my life this year, but this book has me diving head first into the second one!

This series is an incomplete series of stand alones. They are not interconnected. You can pick up any of them at any given time and not miss out on what happened in the first or second book!

Also, can we take a moment to appreciate the beauty that is this discreet cover?! I snagged the whole series while I was in Destin! And I’m so freaking glad I did now!

RUN, don’t walk, and grab this on KU. Thank me later! 😘😮‍💨

I am a huge fan of Tory’s writing so I was excited to get the chance to review a longer book from her. Leigh, Rory and Emmy captured my hearts from the very first page. Such strong girls dealing with so much. Their jerk of a husband and dad got caught up in some mess and up and left them high and dry. Rosaleigh pulled her big girl pants up and did what she needed to do to take care of her girls.

Nix has always wanted Leigh but her ex got to her first. He’s spent years by her side making sure she was cared for as a friend. Loving her girls as his own. Now the time has come to make Leigh his. I loved watching their relationship turn from friends to much more. Her girls were already big fans of Nix and were all on board with their mom being with him. His relationship with the girls was everything you could hope for. He was there for them no questions asked.

This was a great beginning to a series and I’m so excited for the next book.

Phoenix has been in love with Rosaleigh since he was a Senior to her freshman. His then best friend David beat him to the punch, got her pregnant and married her.

Fast forward several years and Rosaleigh is struggling on her own with her two girls, Rory and Emma.

Phoenix sees his chance and nothing will stop him winning her this time.

Leighs is a warm, caring, capable young woman who loves her girls. Whilst Nix is all alpha, but smitten by the three females in his life.

The growing and changing relationship between the two is scorching hot, sweet and funny. Pursuing that relationship alongside raising a ten year old and a thirteen year old is chaotic and entertaining.

This was a wonderful love story and the first book that I have read by Tory. She created characters with depth and charm and I will definitely be looking out for more from her.

Rosaleigh’s life was turned upside down after she realized that her husband was not the man she thought he was. She had a great support system who were there to help her and her two daughters adjust to the changes but lately she has started to look at Nix as not just a friend but a man she wanted to spend her life with.

Nix is her best friend’s brother, and he has loved Rosaleigh since they were teenagers and he was determined to do what was right for her however her husband didn’t feel the same way. He has been the friend she needed and now the time has come to claim the woman he has always wanted and isn’t about to let anyone or anything stand in their way.

I really enjoyed the relationship that Rosaleigh had with both her husband’s parents as well as Nix and her family as they were there whenever she or her daughters needed anything. Nix was not only the man that Rosaleigh needed but the father that the girls deserved as he helps them heal from the past.

This was a quick and lovable read! The characters were enjoyable, really held their own in my opinion. I found myself smiling throughout a lot of the character interactions - no real negativity, despite the conflict within the story.

Rosaleigh has been with her high school sweetheart since she was around 15, and when she became pregnant it sort of sealed the deal. Fast forward to the present and nothing is what it seems!
Now with her husband on the run from the feds - she’s a soon to be divorced, single mother of two.

Luckily, she has Phoenix. An alpha male, who would do anything for the people he loves, especially Leigh. He’s wanted her from the beginning but never got his chance.
I loved his attitude towards pretty much everything. I loved his paternal instinct towards Leigh’s daughters. I loved his want to get her pregnant..(I’m a sucker for a breeding kink).

I do wish there was a little more conflict, some drama! But I loved watching Rosaleigh take back her life.

Loved this story! Phoenix/Nix has loved Rosaleigh/Leigh since he first met her as his sister’s best friend. Unfortunately his best friend beat him to the punch and Leigh married David instead. Fast forward several years and Leigh’s husband walks out on her and her two daughters. Nix is there to help pick up the pieces and take care of his girls. This was an awesome read with lots of emotions that held you captivated and kept you reading until the end. Leigh was a strong woman and did what she could for her daughters often to the detriment to herself. Luckily she had Nix in her corner and she soon realized that he was the one she was always supposed to be with. Nix was protective and determined to take care of Leigh and her daughters, his god-daughters. He was always there for Rory and Emmy and treated them like his own. A wonderful start to their new series. I received an arc copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

For Rosaleigh (Leigh), to find out everything she thought she ever knew was a lie, would have broken her, especially when her husband, David, left her and their two girls if it was not of the one who actually held her heart.

Nix grew up several years ahead of Leigh, so she was off limits, but that did not stop his best friend. When douchbag David, left Nix stepped in to help Leigh with the girls.

Great story from the start, love Nix, he is the ultimate boyfriend, father figure and friend that you could ask for. Leigh was strong, caring and a wonderful mom who did what she could with the life she was delt. When the truth behind David's plan is laid out, it was shocking at how far back he actually went.

Amazing written with the perfect amount of passion, suspense, care and love that grabs you from the start.

This was a small town single Mom romance.

I loved this story. The characters were relatable and the story was heartwarming.

Rosaleigh was raised by a single teen Mom and herself became a Mom as a teen. She and her husband David have 2 preteen girls Rory and Emmy. David was a dirty cop who got tangled up in a drug cartel and is a fugitive. Her best friend is Nix's younger sister Ophelia.

Nix Drakes was David's best friend when they were young. He has always wanted Leigh but David made his move before he could. This was a good read, and Nix is my new book boyfriend. Nix just couldn’t catch a break and shows his love through small gestures. I love it. Those always meant more to me than the big flashy ones that seem like they are for everyone else. Also: heads up. Leigh’s husband is a douchecanoe and his only redeeming quality is his sperm donation for Leigh’s kids. He is definitely on the throat-punch list. But a good read, and I love watching characters get their blinders taken off.

Leigh walked into her home after working one day and her husband is gone. Not long after the local and federal authorities show up. It seems her cop husband was dirty and working with the cartel. Now his best friend has stepped up and helped her out with things around the house and helping take care of her two daughters. And he happens to look like a Greek God.

Make Her Mine by Tory Baker is part of the Men in Charge series, and oh my GIDDY AUNT, but what a read! Rosaleigh and Nix are scrumptious!

After some hard knocks, this story is all about the characters picking themselves up, making choices to live life on their own terms, accepting love, and giving love.

Nix is driven, dedicated, charming. Rosaleigh is strong, protective, a survivor. They are meant to be, if, ever given the chance to meet their full potential. Overcoming obstacles and some light drama, you'll be rooting for their HEA!

This story is all about moving forward, embracing the present, looking to the future, and knowing that it's okay to accept help. And of course, chemistry that sizzles on the page, and an undeniable connection that'll last forever. It's swoon worthy!

P. S. I absolutely want to attend a family breakfast! So much love flowing, it's amazing!

i read this book as part of an arc program. This is the first book in a new series, Men In Charge. In this book, Rosaleigh is a single mother who has two daughters and lives next door to Nix. Rosaleigh and her ex started dating in high school and were friends with Nix. Nix always loved Rosaleigh, but when she married his friend, he stood by and watched her from afar. When Rosaleigh divorced, Nix wanted to make her his, but he waited until she was ready. Rosaleigh thought Nix was amazing, but didn't think he would be interested in her. I really loved Nix, he was a great man who loved the kids like they were his own and wanted to be the man that Rosaleigh loved. I think this was a great story and i loved how all of Nix's family loved Rosaleigh and the girls, i think they were meant to be and should have been together all along.
