Blue Light: Why is it so Special

Rate this book
This book examines the evidence that blue light has a profound effect on the functioning of the human body. Exposing the eyes to blue light in the early morning will reset the internal clock. The internal clock produces the circadian rhythm which coordinates the activity of the different parts of your body. The morning exposure of your eyes to blue light keeps your internal clock in sync with the rotation of the earth. Exposing the eyes to blue light in the hours before bedtime will prevent the production of melatonin, the sleep hormone. This makes it difficult to fall and stay asleep and also increases the risk for deadly diseases including heart disease, obesity, diabetes, breast and prostate cancer and some types of mental illness. Prolongged exposure of the eyes to light, especially blue light, can injure the eyes. Prolonged exposure to daylight will increase the risk for macular degeneration. The use of light bulbs that do not produce blue light and the use of the different types of blue blocking glasses is also discussed.
