Secrets don’t make friends. But neither does the truth.

After her father’s sudden death, Livvy Reape moves from the mountains of Montana to the shores of South Carolina to escape her nightmares. Instead of imagining her father’s death, she’s haunted by dreams of women dying, each death more gruesome than the last.

Between these visions, college, and her grief, Livvy has no time for relationships when the pretentious biologist, Liam, struts into her life. But he might be her first shot at normal in a long time, and before she knows it, Liam’s warmth is all she craves.

Until she discovers meeting him wasn’t a coincidence.

The visions haunting her have finally caught up, sweeping her away into a world where the ones hunting her are no longer just in her dreams.

This urban fantasy romance has a way of healing you.

It is so good! It’s an urban fantasy/paranormal romance with mythology influences and feels sooo unique. The mental health rep in this book was well done and relatable, which is something I always appreciate finding in books. It helps to feel seen, ya know? I loved Livvy and Liam’s relationship…the slow-burn and the tension were just 🙌

Thanks to the author for gifting me a copy!

It was such a great book! I really fell in love with Livvy and Liam! I love how much I had in common with Livvy and was able to connect more with her character. At the beginning of the book I was rooting for Liam to win her over! I definitely didn’t expect who Nathan really was my mouth flew wide open! Riki done really well with this book and it’s going to be in my top 5 so far this year! I can’t wait to read more books by her ❤️

This was definitely a debut novel. I was able to finish it but I did struggle getting through it. I will not be continuing this series.

First the good:
I appreciate that the author tried to tackle some difficult topics. There were a couple scenes that really resonated with me and there was some inner monologue of Livvy’s that hit home and I did relate to.

Now the not so good:
I would implore authors to please do some research of the mental health field before writing a book that focuses at all on mental health. A therapist (in most states) is not able to write prescriptions. What was Livvy diagnosed with? Was the voice in her head her own self deprecating voice or a voice that didn’t belong to her? What kind of “head meds” is she on? I was left with so many questions.
I also think we should be steering clear of stigmatizing terms such as “shrinks” and “head meds”.

The entire middle chunk of the book lost me. I felt like there was a lot of nothing going on for the majority of the book other than eating and camping. I ended up getting bored.

I was also confused the majority of the book because there was no clear plot going on. I was truly like “what is the point of this book?” You don’t get any actual plot/conflict until the last 10-15% but then the major conflict that did happen was confusing.

I devoured this indie debut on audiobook and really enjoyed it. Both Livvy and Liam are super compelling characters and I’m absolutely loving getting to know these two! It’s been a while since I’ve really enjoyed a new adult paranormal romantasy, so this one has been a beautiful breath of fresh air. I especially love the mental health rep and healing journey of the FMC!!

What to Expect:
—Slowburn Romance
—He Falls First
—Only One Bed
—Touch Her and 💀
—Gods and Angels
—Star-Crossed Lovers
—Found Family
—Fated Mates

Thank you so much to the author for sending me a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review! All thoughts and opinions expressed above are entirely my own.

This book brought me so much joy!! While I did cry through some trauma, I relate so much to Libby’s sass, it is UNREAL!! It took me WAY LONGER than I care to admit to realize who the men in the prologue were. This was such a carefully crafted story and you can tell the details were well thought out. The sexual tension was TENSION-ING (yes, I’m making up my own words) but given the circumstances, I get it. Overall, AMAZING read. I was actually itching while trying to cook supper because I wanted to be reading this book!! Yes, it is THAT GOOD!!

GOOD LORD.

Denial is the debut novel by RS Crawford in the Grief series and honestly if this book is an indication of how the rest of the series will go, I can’t wait to get my hands on the rest of the books.

Denial touches on the struggles of mental health from the side of dealing with those feelings and having s partner that deals with those feelings. Within this story we follow our main characters Livvy and Liam, and to be honest with you falling for each of these two was probably the easiest thing I’ve done as a reader.

It’s an amazing breath of fresh air when an author writes so well that you almost feel like you are living through those situations right along with the characters. The development of each character and the overall world building had me constantly gripping the edge of my seat wondering what could possibly happen next.

While this book is action packed, it also gives off a very laid back vibe that makes the flow of the plot and overall energy just skyrocket. If you enjoy books that will have you hooked and ready to pick up the next in the series this is the book for you.

We meet Livvy at a low point in her life, struggling with the loss of her father and just wanting to start over in college, all while struggling with her own mental issues. Livvy is a strong willed individual that also understands that weakness happens, while she struggles through her first day she meets some friends along the way that make living a little bit easier. But when she must make her decision and seal her fate, will she be able to conquer her own demons, or will she be doomed to relive her fate?

Liam, a overwhelming favorite of mine and honestly a little broody, meets Livvy when he least expects it and while he struggles to comfort and show her the truth about himself he never once allows for anything but the best. Struggling to show Livvy her own worth he’s left to wonder if fate will be repeating itself and how he can stop it.

The growth of both characters individually and together throughout this book is what honestly made me fall in love with it. The writing flows amazing and everything about this book begs to be read.

If you by chance haven’t been convinced to read this book yet, maybe this will make you reconsider: there’s hot angels and a whole hell of a lot of touch her you die vibes 😍

I received this ARC for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Denial by RS Crawford

*I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review*

Livvy Reape is a college student in North Carolina studying marine biology. She struggles with her mental health and has sworn off dating. She finds an intense connection with Liam, one of her coworkers, but is hesitant to let things go further between them due to her fear of abandonment.

Tropes: Slow burn, he falls first

What I loved:
- The mental health representation. I'm someone who has also struggled with mental health for years, and I felt seen when I was reading this book. It was amazing, sensitive, and raw.
- The chemistry between Livvy and Liam. I don't want to give any spoilers, but they're amazing together. He's incredibly supportive and patient with her and it was a beautiful thing to read.
- You can't really tell from the synopsis (at least I couldn't), but Denial has paranormal elements and the worldbuilding was on point.
- The whole thing was unique.
- I could not put it down.

If you like fantasy/paranomal romance and you don't read this, you're missing out!

Highlights:
- "Hi," I breathed in a small voice. Yeah, that was real smooth, the voice cackled in my head.
- "He doesn't stare at me," I insisted. "Uh, yeah, he does," Roni argued. "He watches you like you're his or something."
- Grippy sock vacation for one, please. There's no way you're not getting committed now.

CW/TW: Mental illness is depicted, including past suicidal ideation and mention of self-inflicted wounds and suicide attempts. The main character is actively grieving someone close to her. Slut-shaming and physical assault. A male character unties a girl's bikini top while they're swimming.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS BOOK SO MUCH!! I may not relate to Livvy for everything but I do have anxiety. This book made me go through all the emotions. I loved how Liam always knew exactly what to say to her. I also loved TJ, Jaycee, and Shawn. I hated Nathan with all of my heart. I disliked Roni and she annoyed me so much especially when she was with Nathan.

The narrator M.K. Blackwood did amazing!! I loved her voice for all of the characters!!

Favorite Quotes:

“A Little Dove like you shouldn’t be dancing along,”

“I just couldn’t picture a world where you didn’t exist,”

“Only when I’m with you, my Little Dove.”

“I like the sound your heart makes when I’m near,”

“You just know how to ruffle my feathers.”

“I love you.”

“But I love you, Olive Rae Reape. Not some version of you, not someone I expect you to be. These weeks have been everything to me, because of you, Livvy. You.”

“Only you,”

An adventure awaits you!!!! I fell head over heels for Liam and Livvy!!! The absolute sweetest and most heartbreaking story of cursed love ever!! Have you ever had that feeling of self doubt!? The little nagging voice in the back of your mind? You hear all the things it’s saying and do your best to ignore them? It was so raw and done so well I was on the edge of my seat wondering who would win out in the end!! This unique whirlwind paranormal romance will keep you ensnared between the pages from cover to cover!!

Wonderfully written! This book was absolutely amazing and had me so invested! We have have that voice in the back of our heads sometimes telling us negative stuff. The way that she depicted it and brought it to life and helped the main character over come it was fantastic. The story line was amazing and clever! And the small twists and turns towards the ends kept you on your toes! Liam had my full heart from the moment he was introduced! Definitely a 5 out of 5 read

Okay, truth time.. I did not go into this expecting a lot for some reason. I'm not sure why, because the blurb really pulled me in. But HOLY FREAKING CRAP!

The first chapter threw me a bit because we really started by hitting the ground running. Like zoom! But the more I read the more I could not put this book down!

I'm trying to find the words I want to use for this book. I'm honestly in complete awe.

Livvy & Liam's story was written so beautifully. From the prologue I was intrigued and drawn in. Livvy's struggle with mental illness was brought to a brightly shining light! Mental illness was not glorified in this book, but shown in a very real way. I related with Livvy in a lot of ways because I understand that voice in her head telling her she isn't good enough. It's real and I love when an author can show this in a real and true light.

Livvy & Liam captured my heart from the very start. I love how, even with that nasty voice in her head, Livvy is very bold and fierce and I absolutely love that her fierceness doesn't make Liam shy away from her.🫶🏻 Jaycee and TJ are pure perfection.

Also... Angels, demons, gods?! Yes, please, and thank you!! A love that has literally spanned lifetimes! A curse finally broken!!! What a beautiful book! Literal perfection!

i was in f9r this story from beginning to end. the way the author accurately and beautifully wrote how mental health affect every aspect of your life was a breath of fresh air. there wasn't the typical instant recovery or excuses for it.
livvy is a girl who has suffered the loss of the person closest to her in life and has a hard time processing life alone
she has a few close friends but then moves for college and meets a group of polar opposite friends who each fill a void in her life but she also has a hard time believing she deserves it.
now down feel this book is all downs there is a huge l9ve interest and man is this slow burn worth the wait. his patience and unending faith in her is inspirational but it's not smooth sailing due to " extra" outside influences.
this book is a must read for me and I have already pre-ordered book 2
t thw narrator mk blackwood is new to me but will be a new searched by narrator. she had me feeling all the feels. it is hard for a lot of narrators to capture a wide range of emotions and she was able to portray them all with quick changes as mental health does one minute you are at an all time high and the next all thw self doubt is there and she did not dissappoint. I need here to do every book in this series.

Angels and demons, yes please! This book was so great! It does touch on mental health issues so if that is a trigger for you I wouldn’t recommend it! This book has so many mysteries in it and I loved uncovering them as I continued to read. I cannot wait for the next book in the series!

Livvy Reape has always been captivated with death and she never understood why but when her father dies in a car accident she decides to take her own life. Flash forward to her moving and attending a college. Her new roomie Jaycee, seems very cool and life seems to be getting better and then she meets Liam, a man who is after her heart. She doesn’t know what his intentions are and brushes him off at first but somehow he works his way into her life and her heart. But life isn’t always what it seems and she uncovers the truth behind Liam’s actions and it will blow your mind!

If you love:

** I want to disclaim I did receive this as an ARC for my HONEST opinion and review.**

I LOVE the story line. I have never read a fantasy/mythological story like this one. (I won’t say more or I’ll end up giving spoilers)

It had me hooked and I couldn’t put it down. I read it in two days while parenting small kiddos! (Yay digital copies!)

My only “complaint” while reading was I thought Livvy and Liam seemed to have went hard fast. I love the mental health representation but I feel it might have taken livvy more time to open up to Liam because of it. In the end though it all made sense, their draw to each other.. (again can’t say exactly or it would be a massive spoiler)

I’m seriously looking forward to book 2 in the series. I wish it were already here.

I adored this book from start to finish. It took me less than 24 hours to finish this novel and need the second.

I was rooting for Liam and Livvy from the beginning but was hesitant because I could be wrong and he might not be who I want him to be. I was surprised at who some of the characters truly are. From the first few chapters or so, I had inklings of themes or who people were, but be prepared, there are twists you won't see coming.

I loved that Livvy was someone you could connect with when it comes to her feelings, life, and personality. The drama and the conflict will captivate you quickly. I have some questions answered, but I have so many more questions and theories, so I can't wait to see them get answered later in the series.

Okay, Yall are sleeping on this masterpiece. Denial is an urban fantasy/paranormal romance that leans heavily on mythology and lore from multiple cultures, has angels, demons, and lovable side characters.

You want the definition of loving you through every lifetime? Check.

You want hilarious side characters with great one liners? Check.

You want a delicious MMC that doesn’t magically “fix” the FMCs issues but loves and supports her through them? Double check.

Such a swoon worthy romance, hilarious dialogue, and great mental health representation.

I loved everything about this book even if the author is the queen of literary blue balls. Oh, and f*ck Roni.

Mental health should always be treated the same as physical. Sometimes more so. Following Livvy's struggle with inner voices that hinder self-growth, sometimes new friends who actually understand you and accept you are needed to counter those self-depreciating thoughts. The ebb and wane of emotions and relationships really make the slow burn burn. From the highs of crushing a cup of gooey cheese on a new acquaintance, to the lows of struggling with past demons and self harm thoughts. The need of the chemistry between the MC's to finally blossom is worth the wait. I can't wait for the next books of the series to be released to continue this roller coaster of a story.

I would consider this a young adult/new adult novel. There are a few kisses but not mature, spicy content. That being said, I absolutely love the storyline! Livvy is so real and raw. She's exposed and vulnerable. She is a normal ordinary girl. It makes relating to her so easy! She does have a mental chemical imbalance but aside from that, she is the regular next door girl. Liam is that Greek God, Adonis with the wash board abs and V that we all drool over but never actually dream of getting our hands on. This is an ordinary girl's fantasy! I can't wait to see what comes next from this author!

This was an excellent story and an amazing concept for a book. We get to watch the FMC's journey through the grieving process while dealing with a mental health issue. Seeing the rawness of her struggle was eye-opening and engendered feelings of admiration for the difficulties she faced daily. The MMC was a cinnamon roll with more than a dash of touch her and die, and who doesn't love that? Overall, an outstanding debut novel. I can't wait to read book 2!

***thank you so much to r.s. crawford for the ARC! this is an ARC review***

*some minor spoilers may apply*

overall, i thought Denial was just okay. it definitely had its good moments, but it also had its rough moments. We follow Livvy as she navigates PTSD, anxiety, and depression, as she enters college in her deceased father's hometown. I thought the depiction of PTSD was done beautifully, you feel the raw emotion that Livvy deals with on a day to day basis.

My absolute favorite part of this novel was the relationship between Liam and Livvy. honestly, and this is a major pro to me, but their relationship was giving Edward and Bella from twilight vibes. I loved seeing Livvy navigate her own feelings for Liam, being confused about how much she cared for him, but still fighting the fact that she liked and wanted a relationship with him.

On to the cons.

This is R.S. Crawford's debut novel and I feel like that definitely shows. the writing was confusing in some parts and I felt like a lot of the timeline and dialogue was rushed and didn't make sense, making it a little difficult to follow at times. I often found myself flipping back and forth between pages, rereading to see if i missed something. I feel like this will definitely be improved upon in upcoming novels though!

I also felt as though a lot of the characters actions and dialogue was extremely childish given the age range of the characters. To me, it didn't seem like a lot of what they were saying would match what real life people of the same age would say, especially Livvy, given the fact that she's gone through so much and essentially grew up faster than she should have. In particular, I feel as though her friendship and her major arguments with Roni reflect the childishness I'm referring to (see: Roni *literally* stomping her foot in the middle of a fight).

The ending set up for a sequel, and I am definitely looking forward to reading that if/when it comes out! It will be very interesting to see Livvy and Liam's relationship blossom given everything she now knows about him (being an angel AND a sea god? that's pretty sick). I would also love to see a prequel of Liam and Lyric's life together, or if Liam falling for every one of Livvy's prior existences and being hurt over and over by losing her.

Thank you so much again to R.S. Crawford for the ARC! i cannot wait to see what you do next!

This book was not for me. As someone who really enjoys Mythology I was massively disappointed by the lack of depth any amount of meaningful research done in the subjects spoken about in the book. They name drop many gifs and goddesses from various different cultures and yet leave out what makes them important. Why we’re those specific ones chosen? Make it actually make sense with the story don’t just use them as a plot device. It actually had the effect of making the entire story more confusing and added plot holes more than anything.

The writing style was very juvenile, not merely because the it is the authors debut novel, but in the actual story itself. The characters are meant to be in college yet I felt like I easily could’ve been reading about pre-teens or teens. Even the characters that are meant to be way older based on the plot act and react in ways that are far below the ages they’re supposed to be.

While the book is very fast paced I’m not sure that’s a good thing as parts of the plot felt rushed or as if something was missing. There were a few disjointed scenes that felt as if they’d been edited but forgotten to be put back in a readable order. Overall, the shortness of the book is the only thing that saved it from being DNFd.

4.5 stars - The FMC feels very familiar. As in, she feels like a normal teenager that is dealing with way more than any teenager should have to and if you’ve had to deal with some of the things she’s had to, like losing a parent or mental health struggles, you will relate. It was really hard for me to read in certain parts because she loses her father (I also lost my father at 18).

**That’s the only spoiler I’m giving because I don’t think I realized what a trigger that was for me until this book. If grief is new to you, I would not recommend this book right now for you.**

Other than that, this book “felt good” to me. I don’t know how else to describe it. There are strong friendships, losing family but having family but gaining family, a book lover, overachiever, obsessed with mythology.

I absolutely do recommend. I’m very excited for the 2nd book.

ARC Review.
I was able to receive this book as an Advanced Reader Copy in exchange for an honest review. I do not personally know this author and transcontinental found her on my fyp on tiktok.
My review: May contain spoilers*
⚠️check TW/CW
PNR, NSFW, Adult subject matter, Morally gray, age gap, protective male, violence, mystery, one bed.

We being the story with our FMC being watched as she grips with processing the death of her father. We see a small insight into the anguish and the grief that we will come to know from Livvy.
Livvy is headed to college and is unsure where she belongs in life. She battles mental health issues daily, we learn where these issues come from in the book. She is a likable character, and as someone that has had issues with mental health, I could relate to her struggles.
I did feel that the story moved a little fast at times, but I enjoyed the authors story telling and her character development. I am interested in the next books to see what more we learn about Livvy and the rest of the group. I enjoyed the mythological elements sprinkled in a well.
All in all, I recommend this book. I believe the author had done a fantastic job in her storytelling and look forward to learning more of this world she has built.

I enjoyed a lot of things within this book and few things that I didn't.
The things I loved:
The mental health representation in this book resonated with me a lot as my internal monologue can be just as brutal as Livvy's.
The overall plot was interesting and unique in that it didn't stick to tradition lore but was more of a loose representation and honestly sometimes I love that; especially in urban fantasy, because it leaves you guessing what is coming next.
The side characters that were introduced were intriguing and I wanted to learn more about their relationships and connections.
The banter in this book is extremely enjoyable and I absolutely loved one of the character TJ immensely.
The things I didn't love:
The pacing in this book was a little fast and sometimes the overall flow of the writing suffered a bit because of that.
The characters acted less mature than I was anticipating due to them being college students which came across in a more playful manner, not inherently bad just not something I generally gravitate towards.

Overall this was a debut and a good one with a lot of intriguing elements. I did have the opportunity to read the arc for book two and you can tell the story line picked up a lot and the writing style made major leaps and bounds. I am excited to continue this series and see where all the characters end up!

Sit down, kids. We need to talk.
This includes spoilers, so if you don't want to be spoiled, go away.

I'm serious.

Okay, are we good?

Denial is a new adult novel and the first in the Grief Series. You should know that a friend recommended it to me, and I purchased the hardcover because it's so freaking pretty. I walked into this thinking it was a coming of age type of story. Our main character, Livvy, leaves her Montana home after the unfortunate death of her father and heads to college, where she plans to study Marine Biology. Livvy suffers from various mental illnesses due to trauma and loss. The disorders are showcased respectfully so the reader can easily see how the author did her homework. Ready for a fresh start, Livvy works hard at getting a handle on life and is prepared (although nervous) to tackle the future.

BUT THEN SHE GETS TO COLLEGE AND IS ACCEPTED INTO A MARINE RESEARCH PROGRAM.

WHY AM I SHOUTING, YOU MIGHT ASK? WELL, THIS IS HER INSTRUCTOR:

Liam. I have a soft spot for men named Liam, and I have an even bigger soft spot for men who look the way Liam does. You know what I mean. Gorgeous. Call me shallow. I don't care. When it comes to a man with dark hair and a sharp jawline, I am as shallow as a kiddie pool. Splish-Splash.

But wait, there's more.

Liam is mysterious, as in more than just a "I like to tag sharks for fun" kind of way. He's protective of Livvy, as are the new friends she's making at college. It's an odd thing but nice for her. However, as she and Liam grow closer, everything gets wild.

Here is where I switched to the audiobook.

I'm not an audiobook person. I will openly admit that. But this one was fun and fabulous to listen to as I drove around doing my holiday shopping. Even the teenagers working the Chick-fil-A drive-thru stopped to listen with me during one of the more intense scenes—10/10 on the narration.

Anyway, back to what goes down. It turns out that while Denial is a coming of age story, it is very much an Urban Fantasy with a unique take on Angels and Demons. Gods and Goddess. The gang is all here. Denial is the series' setup, and we meet everything from a Grim Reaper to Poseidon to a Guardian Angel. All these new friends carry big secrets, but... surprise, surprise, so does Livvy.

Dun, Dun, DUNNNNNN

I've already downloaded book two to my Kindle, and now I need to order the hardcover to have a matching set. Oh, and please note that Denial is not a spicy book, but in book two, things do get spicy; however, the author has made notations so readers who are uncomfortable with such scenes can skip over them if they would like. And you're probably like: Chloe, how do you know this since you just downloaded the book? Because I skipped ahead to read them. I said I was shallow, didn't I?

Splish Splash.

Denial

I’m not at all sure what Denial wants to be, but whatever it is is not for me.

The good and there is good is that the flow is very even, not slow or odd passages to distract the reader.

The world-building and there is some as this is clearly not the world as we understand it today, is also very good, with both enough detail and color to make it feel solid and vivid.

From there, things go downhill. None of the characters have enough life to feel anywhere near real and the setting is perpetual high school, which does not help.

The central character has a handicap that is never fully developed so this fails as a plot device. The supporting characters simply fill space so that there are other in the story but they never seem to have any function beyond being filler.

The most serious flaw is the antagonist appears without any backstory to justify the hostility and venom they launch. This makes it difficult to grasp why they are so set on doing the central character harm. The villain never has any work of their own to distinguish what they are doing in the story.

The love interest for the central character also appears with no preamble and sets about attaching to the main character with no indication of what might so attract such devotion.

With is principal plot device being a set of youths engaged in some sort of academic work it is hard to not feel they should be meeting at the malt shoppe and making plans for the sock hop.

And while the story leaves plenty of room for a follow-up, there is no real resolution of the challenges set in the story. The antagonist does not pay dearly for their crimes, the central character does not achieve a long-sought goal and the rest of the actors do not find new meaning in the adventure.

The writer of this story frequently chooses seventy-five cent words for a nickel sentence. Now this may be a difference in artistic style and if so then this comment has no meaning, but as a general rule, I find anything which makes the reader stop and go “Huh?” is bad for the flow. If you haven’t used the word in everyday speech within the last week you should probably not put it in your story.

A good clean read if the details don’t slow you down but for me, this was just so-so.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Terrific Story & Narration🎧Intriguing & Emotional!

Denial
The Grief Series, Book 1
By: R.S. Crawford
Narrated by: M.K. Blackwood

I enjoyed this book immensely, the story is original, with interesting storylines that are captivating from start to end. Livvy Reape is struggling with the grief she is feeling from the loss of her father. She has other issues going on, struggling with nightmares, guilt and inner demons. Livvy moves to the shores of South Carolina to attend college, a place she spent time in and has wonderful memories of her father. She settles into her new living situation, has a wonderful roommate, and quickly makes friends with her friends, including Liam, the marine biologist. I loved the chemistry between those two, also loved how protective he was of her. Both of them are harboring secrets, secrets that could make or break their relationship. This is a fascinating story, and it is best to go in without knowing too much, so avoid spoilers and enjoy the ride. The writing, plot and world building are fantastic, as are the character growth and development. The author does a wonderful job handing mental health issues and keeping it all real. Besides the two amazing lead characters, there is an impressive lineup of secondary characters. There is never a dull moment in this book, it keeps you thinking and I loved the twists and how it all played out. R.S. Crawford, thank you for this intriguing story and emotional rollercoaster ride.

🎧📚🎧 And for fantastic narration, R.S. Crawford cast the perfect narrator to bring her characters and story to life. M.K. Blackwood is a versatile voice artist, and she performs the voices for all the characters, does a fabulous job covering both the male and female roles, giving each their own unique voice, making it easy to follow along and tell who is who. She had a complete understanding of the characters she portrayed and was believable in every role she played. She set the perfect tone for the story, captured all the characters’ emotions and had you feeling them all. M.K. Blackwood is an entertaining storyteller and her performance elevates the story to another level. Thank you for another amazing listen.

*I received an ARC for an honest review.*

I originally beta read this story for Riki and I’m really impressed by the rewrite, there have been massive changes overall and I feel that the changes are overall positive and a big improvement.

I enjoyed the general storyline, the mythology nods, the relationship between Liam and Livvy, the friendship group dynamic and the way that mental health was dealt with. For the most part I thought the mental health aspect was written realistically, sensitively and that it added a relatable quality to Livvy. I though it was interesting and unique that Liam was Poseidon and how that was linked to Gods being Angels, I’m looking forward to further stories and finding out more in depth information about this part of the novel and about the other characters in the group and their respected gods. I feel like Riki could write a collection of stories from their pasts where they had moments as the different gods interacting with mortal believers.

For some parts it did feel like the writing was a little stilted and repetitive, the phrase ‘she slit her eyes’ felt particularly like it came up a lot and the many different descriptions of Liams eyes being ‘aquatic’ and ‘oceanic’ further into the story felt unnecessary, like initially it was fine because character descriptions are super important, but after a while it felt like there were just unnecessary eye descriptions. Some of the writing felt a little derivative and cliche, the pacing was a little off in areas, and there were moments that I disliked like where Livvy called her own clothing skimpy for being short which feels a little problematic.
A previous review mentioned some of the dialogue feeling childish for the related age group and I do agree with that, sometimes it was a little cringey, but I also think that there is so much room for development and growth from both the story and the writer, Riki. For a first novel I think there are a few issues but this is a great start and a good foundation to build on.

I did like reading this story and I want to know what happens next, I’m looking forward to both the plot evolving and the writing itself.
