The Mate Lineup

Rate this book
*Short story werewolf romance*

Werewolf men are desperate to find a mate. So, they come out of hiding and reveal themself to humans. They offer to help protect humans for the right to go mate hunting.

I do not know why, but the human government agrees. This means, in every big city in the United States must take part in a mate lineup while men sniff us. I'm super fucking excited.

Every female of a certain age has to go to one lineup, and this is mine. Since running and hiding will make me a slave to the werewolves, I suck it up and stand in the stupid line. But the bastards like my scent paying too close attention to me. I swear, if anyone of them even mumbles the word mate, I'll lose my shit.

The problem is, my best friend Brit wants to attend more. I'm a little overprotective, but I don't stand in her way. Not until they put their hands on her and throw her out. Now, I'm pissed. I make a deal with Brit. I'll attend a few of her lineups and go to the biggest lineup at the Gallo with her to protect her from the assholes. But if she doesn't find a mate, it's time to date human men and leave the hairy ones alone.

She agrees.

The question is, am I making the right choice by getting near more wolves? They liked my scent too much. What if, by showing up, I somehow get caught up in their world? I have a non-human secret that needs to stay buried. Or I could end up buried as well, like my father.

NO!

I can't think like that. This is my chance to save my werewolf-loving friend from getting hurt. She's so desperate for a mate, she's throwing her life away at those stupid lineups. I won't let that happen.

Fingers crossed she doesn't find a mate... Or worse, that I don't find one because I might get stabby. I'm already using my cage-fighting skills to teach these pups a lesson. I have no problem getting my hands even dirtier.

2.75 rounded up.

I liked the basic storyline of this book, but it fell short in the make up for me. However, for a novella, it was an ok palette cleanser.

The basic storyline is of a girl who has been raised in a society where magic users are killed. It doesn't really go into why, but our MFC's father was killed because he possessed the same magic Chloe does. Due to this Chloe avoids being near werewolves as much as she can, but due to her best friend's obsession with becoming a mate, Chloe gets pulled into that world and ends up with not one, but two mates.

What I didn't love:
1. Her best friend Brit, comes across as a selfish, weak, obsessive groupie.
2. I felt like the dialogue and chemistry between the "mates" was not there.
3. There were character continuity issues. At about 80% our kick ass MFC's actions become schizophrenic and illogical. She panics during a fight (even though she's a street fighter, who has never lost a fight in the cage), she hides behind Roman when another group of werewolves look like they're going to attack, her inner dialogue became unsure about everything, etc. Honestly, It was bizarre.

** Reminded me a little of J.C. McKenzie's "dangerous liaisons" novella, which I liked a little better than this one.

** However, don't give up on this author. Her "Dark souls academy" book was excellent! I highly recommend giving it a try.

This is NOT a standalone novel. I wish I had known that before I started it. I liked the story, but I'm really unsure how I feel about the book after the way it ended. The author seems to be setting this up to be an huge fantasy/urban fantasy universe with a love triangle and battles and stuff....

I avoid love triangles like the plague. I don't read them. I don't enjoy them. But maybe this is going to turn into a reverse harem? I don't know, but I can't say I like the way the book ended.

I'm undecided about if I'll continue the series or not.

I'm also undecided about how I feel about our FMC. She's supposed to be this badass fighter and at the beginning I really believed that she was. But the more I read the more I realized that she would get mad at people and just attack them like a crazy girl and not like a skilled fighter. I'm not sure she would have won any of those fights had the people been trying to fight back, or had the fights not been broken up. FMC just seems to have a bigger mouth and a bigger attitude than most people, but I'm not entirely convinced that she could back that up without using her magic.

- medium/low steam (two sex scenes with two different men)
- Single, first person POV
- No virgins
- triggers - a lot of men sexually harassing/assaulting unwilling women, one scene where a group of shifters tried to SA a 16 year old girl, FMC lives in poverty, alcoholic + absentee mother, death of a parent (past)

2.75 an ok palette cleanser with a pretty good storyline.

This book had a solid core, but got lost in the details.
So we have this strong MFC who has an ability that could get her killed, just like it did her dad. Because of this, she avoids werewolves as much as she can, but she has a pseudo sister who is a hopeless romantic and is absolutely obsessed with finding a mate. *first issue: Brit (the bf) comes across as needy, weak, and super selfish. Well, Brit talks Chloe into attending some mate lineups with her. This is where they go and get sniffed to see if they are mates. *second issue: her friend has been classified as a "green", which means she's poor and weak, but cute. So she's seen wolves get extremely attracted to her friend every time they go because Chloe is strong and aggressive. Despite knowing this, however, doesn't alter her behavior at all. Moving on, all the alphas seem to be attracted to Chloe, even though she hates that. My final issue came at the end with character continuity. Chloe has always been the "I don't give a shit" character until about 80% when she's panicking during a fight, hiding behind her mate, acting weak ... This did not add up and was hugely disappointing.
** This book reminded me of a novella by j.c. McKenzie called "Dangerous Dreams", which I liked a little better if I'm honest.
** Don't judge this author on this book though, go read her Dark Souls Academy book. I really liked it.

Darn Cliffhangers!

If I had known beforehand that this ended in a cliffhanger, I would have waited for the rest of the series. That’s my bad though as it is clearly stated at the end of the description. I guess the storyline excited me so much I wanted to read right away and skipped over that last part.

That said… Read this one. You won’t regret it. I’ll be waiting for further installments. Please hurry author!

good story.

Definitely a good intro story! Not quite a novella or a full length book but enough the have a solid understanding of who the main players are. I thought up until the last few chapters that it was a MF book (it’s not) because of only one love interest but like how the author weaved in the other(s). Can’t wait to sink my teeth into the rest of the series!

cute and light

Very light and cute book.
Feisty heroine, and not obvious male H. Not really sure who she is supposed to end up with to be exact.

Great surprise, first book I read by this author.
Enjoy!

An enjoyable book. There was enough background for a shorter book. I enjoyed the characters, except maybe her friend that really took advantage of her, (but I didn't hate her).
It was quick with a bit of a cliff hanger ending.

wow wow

Wow this book was soooo good. This is what we need a strong woman that does whatever she wants. I honestly can’t wait for the next book. I wonder if she’ll get a mate that is not a wolf, kinda hoping for that.

It was a quick read but a really different take on mates and how they found them. I loved the fmc and the friendship she had and how strong it was. Can’t wait to see how the next book unfolds!
