Claiming Her Freedom

Rate this book
After being abducted from Earth and sold to an imperious yellow elf to be his "cuddle buddy", Elle is pretty displeased with her situation. Borial makes her wear a collar and drags her around on a leash, treating her like an annoying inconvenience - when he's not out of his mind with need for her. He doesn't want a relationship with her, he's made that perfectly clear. The problem is, Elle doesn't know what he wants.

She knows what she wants though. She wants her freedom.

Elle hates Borial, so when the cruiser they're on has an emergency evacuation and they find themselves stranded in an unknown jungle, she takes the opportunity to stop playing his pet. That is, until they're joined by a female of Borial's species, and frosty, arrogant Borial is forced to pretend to be more to Elle than he is, or risk being taken back to his planet to be "reassigned".

Now holding all the leverage, Elle negotiates for her freedom, but that's only the beginning. As she learns more about Borial's culture, and starts to see their relationship from his point of view, she's forced to choose between the devil she knows, and her independence.

She hates Borial. He deserves everything he gets.

Right?

So why does she risk everything to protect him?

This story was previously published as a novella in the Claimed Among The Stars anthology. This version has been expanded, with a new ending and added scenes that amount to about 20,000 words extra.

I don't know how I feel about this. This was a hard read, like how as a reader am I supposed to route for a love interest who purchased the fmc as a SLAVE.

Like, girl hated him but also felt sorry for him, but also was attracted to him. So many emotions.

Also, in the book we think that maybe he doesn't know any better? But when we see him pity other slaves, men like him, he cares for them and makes sure to take care of them. Rightfully so the fmc is bitter because he is nothing but frosty to her or uses, "I could have been worse." or "I was kind to you." ideas to make it seems like what he has done is okay.

The writing is well done, I just struggled to find the LOVE part of their relationship. I ended up reading it as, our fmc saw the situation for what it was. She was a stolen human, sold as a slave, no rights to her name, might as well continue to shack up with the rich alien who bought me and set some boundaries to make me feel like I actually do have a choice in surviving.

I liked the general premise of the book, but found most of it to be repetitive and the turn around from enemies to lovers was too rapid for my tastes. DNF 63%

I enjoyed V.C. Lancaster's Office Aliens series and especially enjoyed the great worldbuilding there so I had high expectations for Claiming Her Freedom. While there's some worldbuilding, it wasn't at the same level or depth as Office Aliens, likely due to the length (this is like half the length of those books).

Our FMC Elle is abducted from Earth and sold like a pet to an alien, our banana-skinned, silver-haired MMC Borial. He doesn't treat her like a pet but he does treat her like a slave - complete with collar and leash when they're in public. Her role is to help Borial through his weird alien heats. It could be a lot more sexual but it seems more like physical intimacy than sexual intimacy. In fact, Elle has to wear thick rubber chastity clothing to ensure sex DOES NOT happen during these heats.

Relatively speaking and all things considered, Elle's life isn't too bad with Borial. Her basic needs are met, she's not physically, verbally, or emotionally abused, and she has some special things afforded to her, like a fancy translator made specifically for her. But she's still ultimately a slave and not given much in the way of choice or freedom, so it chafes and that's all she wants.

Things take a sudden turn when the ship they're on is evacuated and two things happen:
1) Elle sets foot on a planet again for the first time in years and breathes real air and sees trees and touches grass. This significantly renews her desire for freedom again
2) She learns that in Borial's culture, what Borial is doing is not only not normal, but the complete opposite of what's acceptable - the MEN must be tied to a woman
This chain of events gives her the unique opportunity to leave Borial behind or renegotiate their arrangement and the book really takes off from there.

Overall, I really liked it and felt like that line between power imbalance was handled pretty well. The endgame was ultimately satisfying and I wish there was more to it. I'm glad I'm reading the longer version instead of the original novella.

I do want to note that there's an awful public sex scene towards the end that I mostly skimmed through and it was super disappointing because it was also meant to be the big culmination of the romance plot. Like exhibitionism isn't for me anyway but the circumstances are such that neither of the characters are comfortable or happy about it being public. Seriously? It would have been easy enough to do this slightly differently, to have the confirmation of the consummation of the relationship be handled differently than a LIVE AUDIENCE. UGH.

This book was so weird, but I couldn’t put it down. I didn’t feel the love between the MC’s. It seemed like the h settled. I never felt the H actually redeemed himself. The h totally saved the H’s ass and he really didn’t deserve it. I never felt the chemistry. The world building was interesting. I liked to read about a world where for once women have all of the power. I would’ve expected a woman to be more magnanimous, however.

Beyond excellent

The cover suggests your typical sci fi romance, but there is nothing typical about this novel, though it IS very much a romance. This is an absolutely beautiful story of two aliens who come together out of necessity, but there is no love there. What happens between them as circumstances force them to team up and grow together is exciting, interesting and sometimes even amusing. This is a step above most of the romances I have read lately. I loved it.

So I think this is well written. I think that the author tries very hard to address some serious issues that are profoundly relevant within the story. I think that if it had more real estate and less emotional understanding by the FMC bc she obviously has Stockholm syndrome.. I think more fight back would have made me less uncomfortable. The star knock off was because it did leave me not satisfied but still uncomfortable.

I really had a great time reading this! Loved the sci fi descriptions and I’m so surprised to have fallen in love with the romance between Boriel and Elle. I’ll definitely check out more by this author.

I liked this book and the dynamics in the beginning. Like a dark alien romance book. But the collaring during sex felt counterproductive and made me feel icky.

The story was so twisted, but also profound. Don’t know how the author managed to make me feel alright about that whole situation, but the fact that there was so much psychological f@ckery kept me engaged and made it overall believable and relatable in a very human way

I gave it a 3 because male submission isn't my thing so I didn't enjoy the book . I prefer alpha males with alpha females .

🟨 Content warning:

This was a weird read for me.

🟨 Borial purchases Elle as a sexy body-pillow (hump pillow) slave. He keeps her on a collar and leash.

Not the first time I've read this premise. But I think why I struggled more this time, is that Borial tries again and again to justify his actions. It genuinely feels like he doesn't see why he's wrong until the very end of the book.

And good that he gets there, but I struggle with really "falling in love" with him, when he's that hard to convince that all slavery is wrong. Not just when it happens to him.

Despite this I was in for a grey-morals story about complex emotions.

🟨 Elle was great. I like her roll with the punches personality. It doesn't come without suffering. It's very clear that she has suffered, and she manages despite it all to keep going. I like that Elle always called Borial on his shit. I liked that she countered all of his arguments.

🟨 But despite this, they go from master-slave, hateful relationship to friendly sex buddies SO quickly. I get that there was necessity driving it in a typical alien "I must have sex" way. But still.

🟨 If you came here for the femdom, I'm sorry to say that it is mostly left off page. Most of their scenes are fairly vanilla stuff. Most of the book feels like the typical "FMC is vanilla but because the MMC is from a matriarchal society she just acts the part". There are a few comments made that are light femdom, and a few elements in their sex scenes. But there are also some maledom moments/elements. They're a switch couple.
The epilogue points out So if that is the main draw of the book for you (like it was for me), I'd look elsewhere.

🟨 The main story doesn't end with love declarations. It ends more at a "we might be able to work this out". Instead

Finaly thoughts
The story and characters had a lot of potential, but I felt most of that potential went unused. I'd have liked to see them actually fall in love.

I liked the story, but I think it would have benefitted if it has been a longer novel.
Elle was abducted by aliens and then bought by Borial. He gave her a small room on his ship, clothed her and fed, but he regularly put a collar and a leash on her. Whenever he was leaving his ship Elle accompanied him on that leash, and it was often, because he was an ambassador of his species. Besides all that, from time to time Elle had to put on a safety, rubber underwear and join Borial in his bed. He went into heat for days at a time and he lost his mind to the overwhelming need, the only thing that eased the pain of it was holding Elle. He didn't want to rape her, so he wasn't a total monster, but he did grind against her, licked, kissed and ran his hands on her body, so I don't know how many points could I give him for not putting his dick in her.
When their situation changes as they crash landed on a wild planet Elle found out that she didn't really hate him as much as she thought. She didn't want him hurt or imprisoned for keeping her enslaved. Their relationship quickly changed from there. It was a bit too quick for me, it would be a little better if they spent a longer time on that planet. And then we didn't really get to see how they fell in love, they were forced to mate by the circumstances and...we saw them again three years later. That was disappointing, I'd prefer a chapter or two of their life after the mating and then the epilogue.

3.5 stars rounded up

I quite liked this book. I really enjoyed the FMC's (Elle) internal thoughts on the slavery system, her desire to be free from her master (MMC) but also knowing that logically she was generally safe from harm with him. How she wished someone would try and save her, but struggling to find a way to help the male slaves when she was now in the position of power. When the tables turned and the MMC was enslaved, I enjoyed her moral dilemma and the empathy the character showed and innately had. Her personal convictions never wavered, and although her choices went from none to limited in the book, she made the best out of the situation and ensured she got what she needed to live a happy life with the circumstances she had been forced into.

I don't know if others will think badly of the story as this is a slave/slavemaster romance story, but I think the author did a good job in showing Elle's thoughts on the situation, why she made the choices she did and that she was very self-aware of what it meant to become romatically entangled with her current/former slavemaster

There’s a bit in this where the heroine, Elle, is marooned on a planet and meets an alien dominatrix with her troupe of male slaves. My God, I thought, if Lancaster carries on like this I’m going to achieve an erection. Alas, it was not to be. I am not the target of her titillation. This is a novel about a woman doing things on her own terms; slavery and freedom, and the achievement of the latter while maintaining a moral through-line.

There’s a beautiful passage when Elle finds herself on a planet for the first time after years of captivity in space. Really good description of her surroundings and her physical and emotional reaction to it.

This is an expanded and revised version of her earlier novella. The novella’s fine, but the story’s too long for the form. So when Elle undergoes a central character development it’s too quick and her actions feel unjustified. I had assumed that this version would correct that fault. I’m not sure why the author didn’t take the opportunity.

Still, that’s really the only problem with what’s otherwise a very enjoyable book.

I went into this hoping for a sci fi romance filled with political intrigue (and alien sex). I got my least favorite sci fi romance trope: stranded on an uncivilized planet where our main characters have to survive in the forest/jungle/desert/winterscape/etc etc. The political intrigue and male/female power dynamics started to feel like a subplot and that's when I stopped reading.

I find this trope boring and lazy - there is no interesting world building in being lost in the woods no matter what color you make the trees and the skies. It all comes down to the characters finding water, berries and small mammals to eat, and rinse and repeat. And because that takes up all their time, there is less of the stuff I like in a book (i.e., political intrigue, world building, and character development).

IMO these aren't sci-fi books, they are fantasy.

Would love to rate this higher since I generally like V.C. Lancaster's approach to sci-fi. Similar to her Gandry series, this has matriarchal aliens and male heats, two things I'm into and like reading about.

But Borial was just too hypocritical and unforgivable to me. The book tries to play the angle of cultural differences and 'oh he was kind to his slave,' but clearly he understood that it was bad to take another person's choice, considering it was what he feared most and he structured his entirely life around avoiding having his choice taken away. Elle even calls him out on the hypocrisy a few times, but considering it rang a little hollow. Maybe if they could've drawn out the time period where the roles were reversed I would've liked Borial more.

This is a Stockholm syndrome fantasy, not the romance story I look for.

FMC is kidnapped and captivated, being bought by our Alien MMC. He acts like a jerk and uses her as a sex slave to satisfy his sexual frustration for THREE years (cuddle, dry hum, you name it), ironically and conveniently he did not cross any boundary that went beyond the point of no return- any form of penetration.

Suddenly, they are stranded on an earth-like island and they seem to like each other!
FMC was deep in Stockholm syndrome, she thought she just need to make the best out of this dire situation. The author tries to make the mating/ marriage a mutual decision, which is a joke. FMC never has a choice and never will.

I picked up Claiming Her Freedom by V.C. Lanister hoping for a strong story, but instead I got a chaotic jumble of scenes that led absolutely nowhere. The plot—if you can even call it that—felt like it was being made up on the fly, with no structure or purpose. Characters came and went without explanation, and the world-building was non-existent. I had no sense of time, place, or even motivation behind anyone’s actions. Everything was just vibes…bad ones.

It’s like the author threw every trope into a blender and hit purée, hoping something would stick. Unfortunately, nothing did. Reading this felt more like a fever dream than a novel. I kept waiting for the story to start, but by the end, I realized it never actually did.

Definitely not for me. Save your time.

So the overall idea of these was interesting and it could have been good but the execution fell short. IMO it would have been better to maybe have her be a SA victim, then she’s taken like normal and rescued by the women and taken to the planet and she sees how all the men are treated and at first she feels safe but she then realizes they’re treated really bad and she feels like it’s not ok and she falls in love with one of them who’s assigned to her or something and she eventually works to change and the women believe her because she actually has experienced violent men, no one on the planet has, it’s just stories that have been passed down and she helps create a better society

I've been jonesing for some serious groveling. Something where the dude does wrong, and the woman doesn't immediately forgive. I was promised that this was chock full of grovel.

I was let down.

He's pathetic. He's selfish, callous, entitled, stupid, and weak. He begs more for forgiveness from his mother for disappointing her than he does from the woman he enslaved for three years.

She's got a touch of the ol' Stocky Syndy. Like, yes, cool, you get yours, babe, but, uh, maybe don't sacrifice everything for this loser.

If this were Reddit's AITA, he would definitely get tagged YTA YTA YTA YTA and everyone would be telling her to run.

Oh my. I have found a new favorite author!!! This book was a fast read. Wonderful spice. Wonderful character development and the hate she has for him and how it changes. Gah! The cultural differences were amazing also. His species have a physical need for a "cuddler" and he bought her as a slave. For 3 years, he only cuddled her at night and she has no choice in anything. She is fed and has a room and is "taken" care of but she is essentially a pet. Nothing goes past cuddling for three years and then this book happens!!

Way out Adventure!

A completely outrageous and out of this world space adventure where male and female roles are reversed. The author creates a incredible story where a earth woman is kidnapped and sold into slavery by aliens. One alien lord purchases her and the hopelessness of her situation with him continues until they are facing dangerous conditions on a unknown planet. Lots of fireworks between the characters and a truly interesting story.

Read this initially during the Claimed Amongst the Stars Anthology and loved it so I was interested to read an extra 20,000 words.

The bones of the story is still excellent but (& I can’t believe I’m saying this) I enjoyed the novella more, particularly our ending bonding scene compared to what it transformed into. Our ending feels very very different here and I didn’t love it.

Nevertheless I love this author and highly recommend regardless.

Strange

Borial is just a dad bod yellow guy with gray hair, which doesn't even seem like an attractive combination. He alternated between imperious and pathetic and overall it wasn't sexy. The major plot hole was everything could have been avoided if elle had flexed her girl muscles and said "this isn't what we do on my planet." The "change" was uncomfortable and weird to read. No pairing seemed happy, and that was sad,as I read romances for happy couples. For such a repressed male, the adult times came way too far into the story, and it wasn't even particularly steamy. The epilogue was okay, but too little too late,I was already disappointed in the book.

Holy Wow! I did not expect to enjoy this book as much as I did- but the story is one I've been craving so that makes sense. Kept as a pet/companion for a strange alien that bought her, extremely hot and very engrossing. I couldn't stop reading.

The ending was kinda glossed over- which was a tad disappointing because I honestly didn't want this book to end! And I'm sad there isn't a whole series for this type of book.

I read this on KU and immediately had to buy it.

Ended too soon

This was an interesting ebook that ended too soon. There is much that was not said about Elle including her life on earth and what happened after mating. This would have been a beautiful long story with lots of drama.
Storyline kept me glued especially when the script flipped .

Well well well, how the turn tables.... A fun spin on the 'woman is alien abducted to be a sex cuddle slave' trope. After an emergency crash landing on a planet, the tables turn and now our heroine has the upper hand. I do so love when that happens.
