KIRKUS BOOK REVIEW

A young con man striking out on his own hits nothing but trouble in James’ suspense thriller.

This series debut features a felon named Morrow, already a prison veteran when he’s released at 22. Seven years after being freed, he abandons his efforts to “not draw any attention” to himself and becomes fully ensconced in the Santangelo crime family business, working in Phoenix as a car cleaner and infrequent driver for mob boss Arnie Westcott. When Morrow finally tires of the grunt work and the thugs he’s forced to collaborate with, he seizes an opportunity to go out on his own. A one-time apprentice to a confidence man, Morrow reenters the nefarious world of grifting with a scheme to steal back a painting previously heisted en route to its new owner, a powerful “rich Jewish dude” named Jacob Almeda, who issues a deadline ultimatum for the artwork’s retrieval. With $600,000 (and their lives) at stake, Morrow, using an alias, begins assembling what he believes to be the ultimate “A-squad” of operatives, including elusive lookout Ghost, musclebound brothers Brady and Shady (who’s mute), and husband-and-wife duo Tommy and Connie.

Meanwhile, veteran Phoenix police detective Clyde Fuller teams with Morgan Sawyer, an investigator who needs law enforcement’s assistance in retrieving the painting to recoup the insurance company’s loss. A frenetic chase plays out for who can recapture the artwork first, with Morrow and his team fumbling through missteps yet always landing on their feet. With the fast-approaching deadline to deliver the painting to Almeda, the suspense mounts quickly. The story involves deadly mobster machinations, but in the author’s sure narrative hands, they are consistently delivered with a wry smirk and the perfect micro-dose of black comedy. Once the timeline is whittled down to mere days until the bounty must be recovered, James will have rapt readers right where he wants them as Morrow attempts the ultimate “well-planned cool out,” with all of his tracks covered. Interested readers will find further Morrow adventures in the series’ subsequent installments.

HI! I’m Earl James. I live in Seattle with my wife, Kat, and our cat, who still doesn’t have a name. I didn’t start writing until my sixties, and I experimented with writing various genres under different pen names for the better part of a decade.

It wasn’t until 2020 that I began to write the one series I had the most hope in – the Morrow’s Con series. Morrow is a character I’ve had in the back of my mind for years, but I lacked the confidence to actually write about him. When I realized I’d better hurry up and write it before the grim reaper arrived, I buckled down and produced Morrow’s Con – Opening Gambit. I loved the lead character so much, I decided to write more.

Before I began my writing career, I filled all my time as a small business owner. I had a bevy of wonderful people working for me and with me, and I experimented with different techniques to try to create a more motivated, happy, and engaged workforce. I studied people and learned what made them who they were. In other words, I educated myself about human nature. I developed a better understanding of people and what makes them tick—what motivates them to do what they do. I learned not only how to predict how the employees would react to changes, but also how to create an environment where they enjoyed working and performed productively. It was those insights that helped me to understand human nature, very much like the character Morrow does.

Now I’m having fun too. Writing more and working less. And by the way, as an unknown author, an honest review of any kind would help me immensely. I would appreciate it so much, maybe I’d even let you name my cat for me.

Morrow’s Con: Opening Gambit is a smart, twist-filled heist thriller that hooks you from the first page and never lets go.

Morrow is not your typical hero, he’s a quiet, calculating con man shaped by a rough past and the mentorship of a master grifter. Now working under a Phoenix mob boss, he finally sees a chance to step out on his own when tasked with recovering a priceless stolen painting. With the precision of a chess player, he assembles a crew of misfits: Ghost the elusive lookout, brothers Brady and Shady (one all brawn, the other mute but sharp), and a husband-and-wife duo with their own quirks. Together, they aim for the ultimate score.

But nothing goes smoothly. Between the mob breathing down their necks, insurance investigators racing to recover the painting, and Morrow’s own past threatening to catch up with him, the tension never stops building. Earl James balances the grit of mob crime with sharp dialogue, clever twists, and just enough dark humour to keep things entertaining without breaking the suspense.

What makes this novel shine is Morrow himself, enigmatic, flawed, yet strangely likable. You can’t help but root for him and his ragtag team, even as they fumble and improvise their way through increasingly dangerous situations.

By the final act, I was completely invested, flipping pages to see if Morrow’s carefully laid plans would hold, or collapse under the weight of betrayal and chaos.

A gripping debut to the Morrow’s Con Stories series, Opening Gambit delivers on action, clever plotting, and memorable characters. Fans of heist thrillers like Ocean’s Eleven or The Lies of Locke Lamora will find plenty to love here.

Highly recommended, I’ll definitely be continuing with the next book in the series.

Morrow’s Con: Opening Gambit by Earl James is a sharp, fast-moving heist thriller that delivers exactly what it promises, clever cons, high stakes, and a ragtag crew you can’t help but root for.

Morrow himself is an enigma: a stoic, street-hardened con man who’s methodical, patient, and seemingly always in control. But when he gets his shot at a real score, stealing back a priceless painting under the nose of the mob, he quickly learns that no plan, no matter how precise, survives contact with reality.

The real fun comes from the supporting cast: Ghost, the mysterious lookout; Brady and his mute brother Shady; and the husband-and-wife duo Tommy and Connie. Together, they form Morrow’s “A-squad,” a crew that’s as messy and unpredictable as they are strangely lovable. Their dynamic balances tension with wry humor, keeping the story brisk and entertaining.

Meanwhile, Detective Clyde Fuller and investigator Morgan Sawyer add an extra layer of suspense, racing against Morrow to recover the artwork. With the mob breathing down his neck, a tight deadline, and law enforcement closing in, Morrow’s game of cons becomes a chess match filled with missteps, improvisation, and moments where he just barely keeps ahead.

James’ writing style blends gritty noir with just the right dose of dark comedy. The pacing ramps up beautifully as the deadline looms, and by the final act the tension is relentless. If you enjoy heist stories with smart twists, morally gray characters, and a dash of sly wit, this one is absolutely worth your time.

A locomotive of a thriller that sets the stage for a promising series.

Morrow’s Con: Opening Gambit is a fast-moving heist thriller that balances suspense with a sly sense of humour. Earl James introduces Morrow, a young con man with a complicated past, who is trying to prove himself in a world full of mobsters, double-crosses, and high-stakes schemes.

What stood out most to me was how the book mixes classic crime-thriller tension with sharp character work. Morrow himself is enigmatic but relatable, and the crew he assembles is both colourful and unpredictable. The dynamics between them create plenty of memorable moments, with just enough dark comedy woven into the danger to keep things entertaining.

The pacing is tight, there’s always another obstacle, twist, or clever maneuver to keep you turning the pages. At the same time, James makes sure the stakes feel real, whether through the looming mob pressure or the relentless pursuit from law enforcement. It never feels overstuffed, but it definitely keeps you on edge.

Overall, this is an engaging start to the Morrow’s Con Stories series. If you enjoy heist novels that blend action, suspense, and a dash of wit, this first book sets the stage nicely for more adventures to come.

Morrow’s Con: Opening Gambit is a fast-moving heist story with a protagonist who is as slippery as he is intriguing. Earl James introduces us to Morrow, a young con man trying to carve out his own path after years in the shadows of mentors and mobsters. What I appreciated most is how the book balances its suspense with character depth, Morrow isn’t just a thief with tricks, he’s a planner who constantly weighs risk against opportunity, and that tension drives the plot forward.

The supporting cast, Ghost, the mute brothers Brady and Shady, and the husband-and-wife duo Tommy and Connie, give the story texture, each bringing quirks that keep the narrative from feeling formulaic. On the flip side, the police detective subplot adds an extra layer of chase and consequence, raising the stakes in a way that feels organic rather than forced.

While the pacing can be a little uneven in places, the mix of dark humour, crime drama, and clever twists makes this a strong series opener. If you enjoy heist stories that lean more on strategy and flawed characters than pure action, this is worth picking up.

Morrow’s Con Opening Gambit has been an incredible adventure to read. The author has such a special way of using words that could simply be called artistic and magnetizing in a way that just pulls the readers right in. The climactic occurrences, intense action scenes, and aha moments of the story are further emphasized and dramatized in the magical way Earl chooses and weaves his words.

A very valuable painting is missing and is rumored to resurface in the next couple of weeks at the hands of a mob boss, Mr. LeBlanc. Morrow must assume the guise of a con artist, masquerading as a potential client of Mr. LeBlanc, who is rumored to be in possession of the valuable multi-million dollar painting. However, things didn’t go according to plan as Morrow encountered significant and unexpected turn of events along the way.

In every regard, this is a great novel. It’s fantastic to read something that is both humorous and action-filled at the same time. I greatly and highly recommend this one for each of the five stars.

The beauty of Morrow’s Con Opening Gambit lies in its perfect blend of thrill, drama, action, and humor. I enjoyed the author’s deep perspective and rich ideas in the setting which made the book unique and alive.

The story begins with Morrow's release from prison, marking the beginning of his journey. After seven long years, he finds himself employed as a security operative for a powerful mafia boss, who runs the South side of Phoenix. However, his role as security is persistently hindered by Damon Barger, a formidable rival of his boss who controls the north side of the city. Determined to halt Barger's reign of abuses, Morrow devises a brilliant scheme that earns him not only admiration but also the profound respect of everyone, including his boss. After making a name for himself, Rafe lured Morrow to steal a highly valuable painting. He has less than 5 weeks to assemble a team with expertise both in combat and in technology and come up with an effective plan. Will Morrow be able to pull off this biggest heist between the two Mafia Bosses?

Earl James launches his Morrow’s Con Stories series with a fast-moving, high-stakes thriller that blends the grit of a crime novel with the clever twists of a classic heist story.

At the center is Morrow, a young con man shaped by a rough upbringing and an early prison stint. He’s a methodical, almost chess-like planner, controlled, quiet, and always thinking two steps ahead. Working low-level jobs for a Phoenix mob boss, he’s waiting for his moment. That moment arrives when he takes on the job of stealing back a priceless painting, a heist that promises both big money and big danger.

What makes the book compelling is not just the heist itself, but the colourful cast Morrow assembles: Ghost, the mysterious lookout; Brady and his mute brother Shady; and the husband-and-wife duo Tommy and Connie. Their ragtag energy contrasts perfectly with Morrow’s cool calculation. On the other side of the chase are veteran detective Clyde Fuller and investigator Morgan Sawyer, who add sharp tension as the law closes in.

James balances suspense with sly humour and just enough dark comedy to keep the tone fresh. The mobsters are dangerous, the stakes are life-or-death, and yet the narrative never loses its playful edge. Every setback feels like a test of Morrow’s resilience, and the closer the deadline looms, the tighter the tension winds.

This isn’t just another heist novel, it’s a story about survival, wit, and whether a man can out-con the very world of deception he’s chosen to inhabit. The pacing is relentless, the characters are sharply drawn, and the payoff is as satisfying as the setup.

A locomotive of a thriller, clever, stylish, and filled with the kind of scrappy underdogs you can’t help but root for. Fans of crime fiction, con artist tales, and twisty heist dramas will find this a standout first installment.

Morrow’s Con Opening Gambit by Earl James becomes a page-turner book that looks into issues of humanity when a man is pushed through to his limits—an action-filled, funny, and heart-gripping novel to read.

Morrow just got out of prison and promised himself to find peace. However, life does not always live up to one’s expectations. Morrow found himself to be working with the number two highest-ranking member of a big mob in Phoenix. Albeit, his wits, and personality got him into a mission that he couldn’t revert. As a result, he needs to assemble a team to make the impossible mission happen and become a real con.

James has successfully done a great job of creating such vicious villains and extraordinary protagonists. The insanity, the fun, the action, and the execution were just perfect. Nothing like it that I’ve read for a long time. It’s definitely something that you would want to take your time reading to savor all the thrilling and suspenseful reading experience.

Funny, action-packed, engaging, and dramatic: with eloquent prose that brings to life realistic and hard-to-put-down characters.

7 years later after getting out of prison, Morrow is now working as a security for a mafia boss in Phoenix. With his unique skill set and wits, he got involved and later became the mastermind in a planned heist of a missing multi-million dollar painting that is rumored to resurface and be sold to a mob boss named Ian Santangelo. Failure to complete the mission means death to him and the rest of his team. As the deadline gets closer and closer, the mission becomes more and more difficult. They start to realize that things are not as they seem, and trust becomes hard to come by. Morrow and his team face increasing challenges. But the most exciting part is, they didn’t give up. Though their determination is tested to the limit, Morrow seemed to have always an escape plan for everything.

Reading Morrow’s Con Opening Gambit has given me a sense of fulfillment that no other book has ever given me. I was deeply enthralled with how the story of Morrow was able to send me on a rollercoaster of emotions based on how it influenced the story. I had the most heart-pounding reading experience, I laughed so hard, and I even got angry at first at Tara’s supposed desirous plan.

The story starts off really interesting, and it keeps getting better with surprising plot twists, exciting moments, and shocking discoveries. Every page is full of suspense, and it's hard to stop reading as you try to unravel the complicated web of lies and secrets. The characters are well-developed and their actions make the story even more engaging. I advise you to keep this one on your bookshelves. It would be foolish of me not to recommend it to everybody who definitely likes a good laugh. With Morrow’s Con Opening Gambit, Earl James has won me over.

Plan A, B, C...I knew about the book's theme but wasn't prepared for its humor which left me laughing out loud while reading. It completely captured my interest, and is now one of my all-time favorite reads - highly recommended to everyone!

From an extraordinary beginning comes a fast-paced race against time where survival and financial fain intertwine. Morrow finds himself pitted against formidable adversaries as he battles them while trying to save an imploding con game, maneuvering around treacherous obstacles on his treacherous path so as to uphold its integrity and ultimately pull off an audacious heist.

One issue I had with this book was how everything happened too quickly for me to fully digest and enjoy in its entirety. There were major stakes to take in at once and only so much I could handle at one time; therefore, this story didn't quite land as intended despite an outstanding attempt.

Earl James delivers a masterclass in character-driven suspense with Morrow’s Con: Opening Gambit. This is more than a heist novel, it's a meticulous study of trust, manipulation, and the psychology of the long con.

Morrow, the enigmatic lead, is no caricature of the clever thief. He’s methodical, haunted, and disarmingly vulnerable beneath a hardened shell. His transition from mob grunt to mastermind feels both inevitable and dangerous, like watching a storm gather on the horizon.

James’ writing balances taut action with sharp dialogue and just the right splash of gallows humor. The supporting cast is equally memorable, each bringing depth and unpredictability to a plot that never rests on clichés. The stakes rise organically, and the final act is a calculated crescendo that feels earned, not forced.

Fans of Don Winslow, Elmore Leonard, or even The Wire will find something to love here. Smart, stylish, and razor-edged.

Reading Morrow’s Con: Opening Gambit felt like stepping into the middle of a chess game where every move mattered. What I appreciated most is that Morrow isn’t a typical slick hero, he’s flawed, cautious, and sometimes reckless, which makes him far more interesting to follow.

The book keeps a steady pulse of tension as Morrow tries to stay ahead of both criminals and cops, and the push-pull of that cat-and-mouse chase adds a lot of energy. At the same time, Earl James balances the grit with moments of humour and wit that prevent the story from getting too heavy.

The pacing is relentless in the best way, you don’t feel bogged down, just pulled along from one complication to the next. By the end, I felt invested not just in the outcome of the heist but in how Morrow and his crew handled the unpredictable ride along the way.

If you enjoy crime thrillers with a sharp edge, complex characters, and a touch of dark charm, this one is worth picking up.

Thrilling both on the page and to imagine in a real-life scenario.

In “Morrow’s Con Opening Gambit”, it’s a do-or-die mission for Morrow. He is about to commit one of the biggest Heist in Phoenix, and he’s got four weeks to assemble a team and come up with a plan. But wait until you finish the book. The twists and turns of the story will have your eyes glued to the pages of the book.

Overall, I totally enjoyed the book. It is a tense, tautly written, electrifying, and formidable novel that makes you think, and most of all, makes you feel every single thing happening as it occurs. I read this work like someone thirsting for water after days in the desert sun—voraciously ingesting the pages as quickly as I could to reach the stunning climax and marvelous ending. I cannot recommend James Earl’s expertly written novel highly enough to all fans of action, drama, and comedy.

Morrow’s Con Opening Gambit is a fast-paced action novel that is about less than 300 pages long. With its perfect length, this becomes just right for regular readers. They’ll be engrossed in reading this fantastic novel about Morrow’s journey to becoming a real con.

Morrow must act swiftly, time is running out. His mission is to infiltrate Mr. LeBlanc’s art collections in search of the long-lost missing painting and return it to its rightful owner in exchange for a huge sum of money. But failure to do so means death.

While Morrow’s plan is already exciting in itself, the twists and turns of the story and major revelations were the book’s highlights. The characters of the story were also captivating. Clearly, Earl James did a fantastic job in writing. Truly a mesmerizing work of art!

Morrow’s Con Opening Gambit. I got so excited many times toward the end of this book. It managed to surpass my high expectations and be nothing at all like I expected.

The novel began with Morrow being released from prison. He’s twenty-two years old, and seven years later, he landed a job as security for a dangerous mafia boss. While he was taken into action with the conflicts between him and his boss's rival, his attention was captured by Rafe’s proposal that has something to do with stealing the most valued painting. However, there’s a catch; the painting is missing, and not everyone is who or what they appear to be. In this high-stakes tale of international intrigue, Morrow will find himself facing off against dangerous mobs, private investigators, criminal organizations, and other untold dangers. Highly recommended!

Earl James is literally a genius who has mastered the art of emotional manipulation, word-building, and everything else needed to produce a peerless literary work of art. Every part of the narrative effectively captivates the reader with intelligently woven words, ideas, and descriptions that make for an easily understandable and strikingly imaginable scenario.

Aside from the author’s undeniable skill and mastery in writing, one of the bests in this book is that it actually touches on a wide variety of life lessons and heavy topics. This provokes a series of contemplation on the reader’s moral standards and righteousness. With all of its close to 300 pages, I’m pretty sure you’ll beg for more. The author got everything down the path and produced such a great masterpiece. Massive respect!

Morrow doesn't smile, and neither did I, because I was too busy holding my breath.

This book hits the pavement hard and doesn’t look back. Morrow’s Con reads like a slow-burning fuse on a stick of dynamite, where every page tightens the grip and every character could be friend or backstabber. Morrow is no smooth-talking, tuxedo-wearing grifter. He’s surgical. Cold. Real. A ghost in plain sight with a mind like a chess grandmaster raised on asphalt.

When the job comes calling, the tension crackles. The team he assembles? Equal parts misfit, menace, and mystery. And just when you think you’ve figured out the game, James flips the board.

If you like your thrillers smart, sharp, and tinged with the grit of real street cons, get in the car. But buckle up, this isn’t a joyride. It’s a job.

This is not your average slick heist story. Morrow’s Con is bruised knuckles, cigarette smoke, and blood on the floor. It’s about a man shaped by the grind, trained in shadows, tempered by silence, and finally ready to play his hand.

From the very first chapter, I felt the tension crawling up my spine. Morrow isn’t flashy, he’s quiet, calculating, and absolutely lethal when the moment comes. The way he moves through this world, half ghost, half threat, left me unsettled in the best way.

Every character brings scars to the table, and you never quite know who’s bluffing or who’s one step from betrayal. James doesn’t sugar coat the criminal underworld, he puts you in it and dares you to root for the devils.

If you crave crime fiction that feels like a punch to the gut and a whisper in your ear at the same time, this is it. This book knows how to get under your skin.

What struck me most about Morrow’s Con is how it examines identity and invisibility. Morrow isn’t flashy, he thrives in the shadows, and that’s exactly what makes him dangerous. Ghost mirrors that same quiet strength, while Brady and Shady represent brute force loyalty, almost like a test of whether violence can substitute for trust. Tommy and Connie are fascinating as a couple, they embody the duality of love and betrayal, showing how intimacy can be weaponized. Arnie Westcott embodies systemic corruption, always pulling strings from above. The rival gangs and law enforcement create external pressures, but the real tension comes from the question: can Morrow step out of invisibility and lead? This is more than a heist novel; it’s a character study wrapped in crime noir. For readers who enjoy digging beneath the surface, it’s a rewarding experience.

This book had potential, but for me, the pacing dragged in places. Morrow as a character is fascinating, his ability to blend into the background is both his strength and his flaw. Ghost was underused, which disappointed me because the lookout role could’ve brought more suspense. Brady and Shady felt a little stereotypical as the muscle, though they had some memorable moments. I did like Tommy and Connie, they brought wit and tension into the group. Arnie Westcott was menacing but sometimes felt like a caricature of a mob boss. Rival gangs and the police subplot seemed rushed, leaving some plot threads dangling. That said, I admire the ambition of weaving betrayal, loyalty, and crime into one story. I’d pick up the next book, but I hope it tightens the pacing and expands on the crew’s dynamics

If you are looking for a book that has the ability to have you on the edge of your seat the whole time, then look no further. Morrow’s Con Opening Gambit will take you on a crazy plotline with multiple climaxes. One of the best scenes that totally got my attention was the part where Tara and Morrow tried to open the safe of Mr. LeBlanc for the first time. It was hilarious, funny, and full of thrills.
The trigger warnings were minimal, and I believe that even youngsters would enjoy this book. The twists and turns between the chapters were absolutely a lot of fun. Surely, James has mastered the subject of his novel. The details and descriptions in the narrative were brilliant and everything beautifully comes to life. I highly suggest this one.

This book is going to take you on a movie-like reading experience. Morrow’s Con Opening Gambit’s plot and characters are surely a surprise.

One of the best things that I like about this book is the way Mr. James crafted his plot. It’s unpredictable and hard to put down. With his skills and talent for writing, I had a lot of fun finding out the real con. In addition, the book’s plot is backdropped in subterfuge, its theme fosters trust, relationships, family, and love of the nation’s cultural heritage.

Earl James definitely did not disappoint and even exceeded my expectations with this novel that filled me with excitement, thrill, and overall paranoia of fearing for all the main characters’ lives, especially Arthur.

Morrow doesn't smile. He possesses an uncanny ability to remain expressionless It makes him embrace his frugal nature.

However, what I like about this book is the contrast between Morrow’s personality and his team members. While Morrow lives an austere lifestyle, his patience was tested by the brilliance and idiocy of his team members, if not all. Although I do not commend their nefarious plans, somehow, seeing them get away with the police is satisfying.

Overall, the ending was intense and a lot of fun. I was deeply satisfied with the book and this is something that action-comedy enthusiasts should try. I’m sure you’re going to love the brilliant planning, gun-fight, chasing, and deceiving

In all honesty, this book is one of the best entries in the market today in terms of action, adventure, humor, and slight hints of romance. You would be surprised at how well the ebbs and flows were carried out in the story.

The story tells about Morrow’s first real con job. He had no actual con job experience before, and this is the moment in his journey to becoming the greatest con artist.

It’s really quite a story and not one for the faint of heart, though. Every chapter is an experience in itself, and it goes from lighthearted to dark in seconds that you don’t quite expect but should see coming. This novel excels in every aspect and it seamlessly combines humor and adrenaline-fueled action, making for a truly engaging read.

The characters in this novel had me rooting for them to succeed or fail, which I view as an indication that Earl James crafted well-drawn characters. I finished this book in just one sitting because I can’t put it down.

Morrow is on a mission to steal the most valued painting. However, the painting is missing. It’s believed to resurface through a likely deal between two mob bosses in less than 5 weeks. The harder they tried to devise a plan, the more they came to understand its impossibility. Morrow’s life hangs in the balance. Failure is not an option.

I have to say, Earl James, you are truly a brilliant writer. Please write more. This was a marvelous experience. I would definitely give more stars than five if I could.

The title of the book is interesting - Morrow’s Con Opening Gambit. It makes you think that life is like playing chess. It’s got rules to follow, and everything is unexpected.

Although I appreciate the writer’s effort in building a good story plot and interesting characters, this book did not sit well with my pace. The pace is slow and I’ve got to flip page after page before getting into the next scene. This in my opinion took the fun in my reading. In addition, I was disappointed by Morrow and Tara’s tandem. At the end of the story, although it seemed like Morrow and Tara met halfway, they didn’t end up with each other. It’s a bad cliffhanger because it leaves readers feeling unsatisfied.

There are a lot of books that have really piqued my curiosity and made me really invested in the stories that they entail. But this book, by far, has been the best when it came to upholding what the story wants to uphold.

Morrow’s Con Opening Gambit has successfully executed a plotline with engaging characters that somehow liken life to a game of chess. Out of his ten rules, rule number three is my favorite: “Better to have most teammates who don’t know each other than too many who do. If they know each other well, and trust each other, the leader could find himself getting outmaneuvered. Never a good thing.” This rule played out so well in the book that even at the end, it managed to find its place.
