What would you do if you lived in constant fear of your past? Haunted by the pirates who burned your city, exploited by the people who pulled you from the ashes?

When an unruly sailor asks Freya to draw a map - a map she thought had been lost alongside her parents -, she sees an opportunity to settle the score of her life. But darker forces are at work, and Freya is merely a pawn in the ultimate game of secrets and survival.

Enemies to lovers AND slow burn? (Plus a heartbreaking hard STOP slow burn 😩😭)
Yes yes yesss.
I was itching for another pirate fantasy. I saw this one a couple times on TikTok and really loved what the author shared. So I picked it up.
And I’m so happy I did! It was one of those books that managed to capture my attention while being in a slight reading slump.
Freya, the main character, is struggling to make ends meet and get herself and best friend out of the kingdom of Orlenea while also stealing secrets for rebels. After an encounter with an infuriating sailor cheating her game, she loses her job.
Not long after we’re reintroduced to that sailor, Hex, who wants to commission map Freya created a decade earlier that’s since been half destroyed.
I really liked Freya, she’s a little naive but she’s still entirely capable of getting things done and taken care of. Her distrust of people is not unusual in her world and her fear of pirates is justified after the murder of her mother.
But you know Hex weasels his way into her head and heart, slowly, inch by inch. Their banter was fun but the genuine care and attention Hex gives Freya is just too precious 🥺
The romance is, I’d say, light and natural in evolving. We kind of get a hard pause on it when secrets are revealed but I like how natural it is between them. And I think the romance will really pick up in book 2.
We get more about the world in this book, I think. Both main characters are still kind of a mystery in a way. Which I’m okay with, I’m excited to learn even more about them. ESPECIALLY Hex. I have a theory about him 🤔
The only thing that occasionally felt off to me was the time time in the beginning. I think how it’s written at times it doesn’t feel as if as much time has passed than it actually has. I believe it’s over the course of three weeks but the transitions felt like days. But not necessarily with the characters’ relationship.
Overall, I loved this book. It was fun and it pulled me in. I fully volunteer as tribute for an arc of book two because I’m DYING after the ending 😭.
Now, where do I start? Because I have many thoughts on this book.
This book had everything that should make me like it, and yet it failed to hold my attention. There was too much going on, while not enough happened at the same time. I don't know how to describe it. It felt like the author tried to shove an entire trilogy into one less than 400 pages book. Because so much happened in this book there wasn't much development or depth and important scenes where over too quickly and relationships between characters developed mostly off page. For example, the main romance didn't feel authentic. I honestly thought I was going to love this romance. Enemies to lovers is one if my favourite tropes after all. But things between them changed way too quickly. Apparently the relationship developed over 3 weeks, but on page it only felt like 3 days. I get that the author can't describe every scene over the entire time period the book takes place in, but SOME development would have been nice. The mc went from hating him to him calling her 'my love' in like one chapter. Why does he care about her? When did they get to know each other? YOU BARELY KNOW EACH OTHER. I get that over 3 weeks two people can get to know each other really well, but it wasn't shown.
The MC was...something. Her development was interesting, because she only annoyed me more and more towards the end. I feel like the author was trying too hard to write an interesting female character who doesn't need to fight physical to be strong. While I usually like me some characters who usw their brains to win fights, this wasn't it. The author completely failed in this aspect because the mc DIDN'T use her brains. So she can't fight and she's stupid. Great. We are told time and time again how the mc uses her non fighting skills, that she trained for 10 years, to play The Game. And yet she completely failed to see what was right in front of her. I saw the plot twist coming a mile away, but she didn't. She doesn't use her brain to get of dangerous situations either. She needs to rescued by someone else. The writing of this character makes no sense to me. She was taken in by rebels after her parents died, and in the 10 years that passed she only learned how to find out secrets. How does she do that, you ask? By making small talk. That's it. That's all she learned in 10 years in an underground rebel organisation. She doesn't even know how to hold a knife or where to aim it to do the most damage. It makes no sense considering that she is hiding from the people who kilked her family. One would think she would at least be interested in learning basic fighting skills or how to hold any kind of weapon in case the bad guys really do come for her, but nope. She can swim but doesn't know that the more clothes you wear the more likely you are to be dragged under by the weight of the wet fabric. But remember, her mind is her weapon, who needs fighting skills?
The villains are not very well developed and oh so cliché. The evil pirate captain talks like a cartoon villain, and we know almost nothing about him besides him being evil and that he killed the mc's parents. The other evil guy with shadow powers can kill dozens of people in a heartbeat but he saves the mc from other evil people because????? The female villain is comical. Of course she wears all black and a cape that billows in the wind, and an ominous cane that can transform into a weapon. We are told that she is this super evil force that needs to be taken down because she wants wokd domination or some stuff, but we are never actually shown. How do you(mc) know she is going to conquer the world and is going to make people kneel for her? BecauseIdon't rememberher ever sayingdhit like tha. She wants power, and she wants to be queen, but given the fact that we know absolutely nothing about the actual royal family, and that the current Queen is willing to leave the Kingdom unprotected during her journey to marry the princess off, why should I care if they lose the throne? Who knows, maybe the Kingdom would be much better off under the rule of villain lady. Oh and villain lady gets a dragon/snake creature so of course that means she's truly evil.
I really can't say much about the world building because there is almost none.
One star for the idea, another for the female friendship.
Advertising a book as ToG meets pirates of the Caribbean is risky because those are some pretty big shoes to fill. Unfortunately did not live up to that hype but that doesn’t mean it was a bad book. I just felt like there was a lot going on, and it felt like rushed but somehow slow!?! I really didn’t care about the first half of the book, and I didn’t really care much for the characters or their relationships. The second half started to get interesting though, overall an average pirate book.
Wow, wow, WOW! I feel like that's the only reoccurring thought in my head at the moment. This whole book was such an amazing read. I loved the pace, the development of the plot and characters. The ending that left me on the edge of my seat! EVERYTHING.
First of all, thank you to my friend Rachel for recommending this book to me and making sure I moved it to the top of my TBR list. I'm so glad I did.
This is my first pirate fantasy book and it did NOT disappoint. It also has a romance subplot and I loved every second of it. The romance was the SLOWEST of burns and it burned SO GOOD. Think strangers to allies to friends (?) to .... (I will let you read the book so you can see where that leads to.)
Freya, I love her. She's a heroine that I would 100% follow in whatever plan she had. I would defend her from everyone, period. Her journey of self discovery in this book was one I enjoyed reading. In the beginning, we see Freya as the version of herself she created which was not the real her at all, not even close. The real Freya is strong and fierce. She is not dependent on anyone and she bows to no one. She does not cower to fear. And it was beautiful for her to find herself throughout the book and find the strength she has inside. She will be such a force to reckon with in the following book.
Hex, listen I love you but you and I are fighting right now. I knew where the plot was going with you and yet I still felt BETRAYED when it happened. You disarmed us with your mischievous smile and flirty personality and I will hold it against you. You can tell Hex has such a great heart but we also don't really know him. Who he truly is, his background (although I do have theories.) I cannot wait to see more of him in book two and I am ready to go through the emotional rollercoaster he will for sure put us through.
There were other characters I adored, some I felt unsure about and other I was ready to fight. But overall, this fantasy world the author created was incredible to become a part of while on this reading journey. The world building was perfect. The twist and turns were *chef's kiss*. I truly enjoyed this book.
If you love morally grey characters, this book is for you. If you love pirate fantasy books, this book is for you. If you love romance with SLOW BURNS, THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU. ♥️
I loved how the author narrated the story. The world building are easy to imagine and the characters are amazing in their own ways. I was eager to see what's all the fuss about. It was full of action packed, hurt, betrayals, longing, flawed characters, lies.
The story written how all the pirate movies were! You can vividly imagine evrything. It was a quest/adventures.
First half of the story, was slow paced with the heroine's life turned upside down all because she could draw a map like how her father taught when she was a child. Everyone fighting to get map on their hands and Freya, the heroine, crossed in between.
Second half of the story, was picked up with the fight sequence, ransom, a quest to find the rifts. The plot has some surprising turns of events and has sirens, creatures, long lost island.
I loved the ending with fighting the monsters and trying to save themselves from the evil women.
I soo can't wait to see what happens in book 2. I recommend this book if you love pirates.
if you’re looking for a new adult pirate fantasy, this book is definitely something you should consider. i devoured this book way too quickly, and will definitely be rereading it before the release of the next book.
the biggest selling point on this book is the inclusion of pirates. i was so excited to pick up this book based on that alone. (i was coming down from my black sails high, and this book was timed perfectly with that).
scars of salt and silver has one of my favourite portrayals of friendship. the relationship between freya and hetty is so wholesome and realistic.
as for tropes (seeing that’s what makes people read most books these days), we have: an enemies to lovers romance with excellent slow burn material. (honestly, it was so well written and developed!).
we also have (arguably, my favourite): morally grey characters. i can’t get enough of people doing questionable stuff for self serving purposes.
overall, this book had a lot of exciting ideas and fun characters that i fell in love with. i can’t wait to read the next book in the series, and to see what happens next! scars of salt and silver was so well written and engaging that i couldn’t get enough of it!
I had the pleasure to read this beauty early and it was an amazing ride! I liked Freya from the very first chapter. She's strong and knows what she wants, and in the world she lives in, it's the most important skills. The story was fast-paced and action-packed, full of twists and turns and revelations that I never saw coming. Between magic, pirates, mystery, legendary creatures and betrayals, I was completely pulled into the world and didn't want to leave. Indiana's writing is very smart and addictive and it transported me into the fantasy world she created easily. I liked everything about the book and cannot wait to read the sequel to see what the author has in store for our dear Freya. For a debut novel, it is simply breathtaking! And for a fan of fantasy stories like me, it was an absolute gem that I highly recommend you read.
Ahoy there, readers! I recently plunged into the depths of "Scars of Salt and Silver," the debut novel in what promises to be a sprawling fantasy series. While the title conjures images of swashbuckling adventure and gleaming treasure, my journey through these pages left me feeling more adrift than anchored.
The narrative felt like a collection of self-contained voyages, each focused on specific plot points that, while individually intriguing, didn't quite coalesce into a cohesive whole. This episodic structure, akin to several novellas stitched together, unfortunately led to a sea of unanswered questions. For a first book in a series, I found myself yearning for a more unified narrative and a stronger sense of the overarching plot.
Perhaps a different tack, such as a prequel exploring some of these individual tales, might have served the story better. This could have allowed for a more gradual unveiling of the world and its intricacies, preventing the overwhelming confusion that plagued my first 70% of reading. While some might argue this disorientation adds to the allure, for me, it ultimately hindered my ability to fully immerse myself in the author's creation.
Ultimately, I must concede that my experience might stem from a simple mismatch of tastes. Pirate fantasy, it seems, is not a genre that resonates deeply with me. Adding to my reservations was the inclusion of the oh-so-familiar "slow burn enemies to lovers to enemies again" trope. While popular, its reappearance here felt somewhat predictable and didn't quite ignite the spark I was hoping for.
In conclusion, while "Scars of Salt and Silver" undoubtedly offers glimpses of a potentially rich and complex world, its fragmented structure and reliance on well-trodden tropes left me feeling more lost at sea than ready to embark on the next voyage. This series, it seems, might chart a course that I won't be following.
This was an interesting read. I will admit that I liked the beginning far more than the end. It was a very interesting concept and I loved the story line of the FMC being a map maker and possessing the only knowledge of a certain geography. I love a good pirate story! However, there were a lot of things I was disappointed by and/or would have changed. For one, there was not enough romance/connection between the MMC and FMC and it fell stagnant and then was really rushed making it choppy. Also, the plot lines took a turn and were not favourable imo. If you think enemies to lovers, hidden identities and a pirate world this will be an enjoyable read for you.
2.5 ⭐️ This book has everything on paper but the execution is lacking. Constantly told how smart and savvy the FMC is but she is actually painfully dumb. The things I was able to put together so fast that she couldn’t see was hard to get through. The relationship development is lacking, I cannot tell why these two like each other separate from physical attraction and the development was off. It’s a pirate romance and we were not even on a boat till 75%. I’m not sure I’m convinced to continue the series. I wanted to see more of her best friend and there was just a lot of unrealized potential. I wanted to like this book but I ended up dragging myself through it.
This was a pretty good pirate story with a decent romance subplot, mystery, hard-blow plot-twists and plenty of action.
It’s definitely imperfect, the relationship between the two love interests could have been fleshed out more as an example. However, I still thoroughly enjoyed this read.
It was fast-paced, fresh, fun and the world, magic system and lore all were well-rounded enough to keep me engaged and entertained.
The last third of this book was especially explosive and I honestly cannot wait to see where this story goes with the next book.
- pirates - reluctant allies - snarky, capable MC - charming, swoon-worthy MMC - colourful, diverse side characters - LOT’s of mystery, magic and lore - betrayal - epic fight scenes
3.5⭐️definitely way more entertaining than I thought it would be! Was a pretty engaging read with a couple of good twists that i didn’t see coming and lots of angst💫
Each sentence feels beautifully crafted and deliberate, following the most relatable heroine, perhaps.. ever, on a journey that felt original. There were three plot twists that I didn't see coming, and I am glad there is a second book coming soon and if you read the book, you will be too, as this story is one you would grieve if you didn't get to read more.
I loved it. Pensaba que no había libro dos y casi me pongo a llorar porque BRO WTF. Ha sido epico me ha encantando y no podia parar de leer voy a por el 2 bye.
I finished Scars of Salt and Silver this morning having read it nonstop ever since it arrived in my mailbox a few days ago, and my oh my what a story! It has everything you could want; adventure, magic, chemistry, suspense. It is so wonderfully descriptive I can picture Orlenea, the map and all the characters. And the plot itself.. what a ride! Your left wanting more and I for one cannot wait untill A Dance of Devils and Daylight. Highly recommend reading!!
Exciting, fast paced and compelling. I really enjoyed everything about Scars of Salt and Silver. Compelling plot, intriguing characters and wonderfully descriptive writing. I am looking forward to the next instalment!
DNF at 85% but I'm counting as read bc I'm pretty much at the end
I'm not sure why I hated this so much? I just honestly don't care what happens next
A summary: -boring -no chemistry between the love interests, he really seemed like he didn't like her at all -every single plot twist was obvious as hell (I haven't read it but I know there'll be something with sirens at the end and a certain someone from earlier in the book will end up rescuing her) -I mean I get she might not want to die but like... she really has absolutely nothing to lose why didn't she at least like try to jump off the boat and swim away? -For someone raised by someone so cunning she was really dumb... why would she draw this super secret map for a total stranger? He obviously wants it for a reason? Also she is absolutely useless at all times
DNF at 67% - Oh how I wish I could give this book more than just one star! The plot has so much potential, pirates, enemies to lovers, TOG vibes, morally grey characters- everything I love! However it’s so poorly written that I couldn’t even finish it. The book lacks character development, the plot is stagnant and the essence of the novel has no depth to it. I won’t give this review more time as I’ve wasted so much time on this book already, but I agree with the majority of the review below by Anna which sums up every disappointing aspect of this book. I truely hope that the author can develop their writing skills further as I think the base and ideas are good, it just lacked anything further than a moderate foundation that left me bored and wanting more. I might try go back and finish it at a later date but at this stage I’ve just hit a wall and rolled my eyes far too much in the last few chapters that I’ve tried to push myself through so it’s a one star review from me. Here’s to hoping for better novels from this author in the future
Wow what a story, I was so sucked into this book. The characters are wonderfully written and make you really invested in what is happening. And Hex....Hex!! I can't wait for the next book.
I’m so confused because there was so much going on but it was formatted in such a way that I felt so uninterested and bored. It was like the entire book was just preparing you for the second book instead of doing its own thing, and basically felt like the first 50 pages of a fantasy book. The characters were not developed at ALL and I actually could not care about them. The romance felt forced and since this book was supposed to be slow burn isn’t it a little silly she was already like “ugh I should hate him but I love him” like a day after meeting him… The “betrayals” were so predictable that I was wondering if the audience was just supposed to know the whole time and the characters weren’t. Also other than her parents getting killed by them, pirates weren’t even a thing until like 77% into the book and I was a little disappointed by that. Also- could just be coincidence- but I found this book through a tiktok on the author’s page that featured a scene from Pirates of the Caribbean as a way to get the readers interested, and when I read the book it was interesting to me that the captain’s name was Barossa and in POTC the captain’s name is Barbosa? Maybe I’m reaching, but it felt a little unoriginal either way. Overall a 2-2.5 star. The last bit was alright but I was pretty bored by it for the most part.
Fun, stark pirate book set in a hauntingly gruesome world. This character driven book will sweep you up into a dark tale of death, loss, and desperation.
I really enjoyed the overall plot of this book. It took a twists as you get toward the powerful conclusion, but the characters make the book. The FCs are fierce and brash in all the best ways. You can’t trust anyone because as the story unfolds you’ll start to realize that everyone has a motive to try and seize power in this world filled with have nots.
Wow, this book just took me on an epic journey to fantastical lands of pirates and magic. I’ve always been a huge fan of Pirates of the carribbean, and this book gave me the same feelings as those movies did! Highly, highly recommend reading this gem of a book. And I really can’t wait for the second book, that cliffhanger though. 5 stars!
Such a beautifully written, perfectly paced novel! There were so many twists and turns, keeping me guessing the entire way through. I fell in love with every character and loved the emotional journey they took me on. A great first installment and I cannot wait for book two!
This book was better than I thought it was going to be! Admittedly I was a little disappointed by the heroine - it was repeated that she was strong/intelligent but I didn't see that in all her choices. But I enjoyed the fantasy description, the side characters and the storyline that left me wanting to see what happened next.
