We both share a love for music, Monty Python, dirty jokes and my grandmother’s homemade cookies. I also have a giant crush on Mike.
And he has no idea.
I tried to tell him at a New Year’s Eve party last year, but I lost my nerve, and he ended up with someone else. Armed with a broken heart and a massive hangover, I wrote a list of New Year’s resolutions intent on turning myself into New and Improved Jane who doesn’t let life pass her by.
With resolutions to check off the list and limited time to finish, I accepted Mike’s offer to help. But spending all this time with Mike is bringing up feelings that I’d spent a better part of a year keeping under control. Mike has a girlfriend and I can’t risk losing my best friend, but sometimes the way he looks at me makes me think, maybe, he feels them too?
I’m probably just daydreaming, as usual…
This free newsletter-exclusive novelette has NO cheating and is a standalone, friends-to-lovers romantic comedy full of alphas, steam, sarcasm and Monty Python references.
Lucy Eden is the nom de plume of an romance obsessed author who writes the kind of romance she loves to read. She’s a sucker for alphas with a soft gooey center, over the top romantic gestures, strong & smart MCs, humor, love at first sight (or pretty damn close), happily ever afters & of course, steamy love scenes.
When Lucy isn’t writing, she’s busy reading—or listening to—every book she can get her hands on— romance or otherwise.
She lives & loves in New York with her husband, two children, a turtle & a Yorkshire Terrier.
Friends to lovers Demasiado corto lo que hace que no se desarrolle bien la historia y los personajes, además que la protagonistas es bien incoherente. He leído mejores historias cortas de navidad by the way ya me estoy poniendo a tono.
Lucy Eden is one of those authors that I want to read, but just don’t seem to make the time. I picked up this freebie novella back in December 2022, and although it’s pretty new, I decided to read it. One could loosely apply baggage to the book, as the couple has been in love for three years, but held back out of fear of rejection and some past issues (baggage).
I’m a fan of the friends-to-lovers trope, and Resolutions doesn’t disappoint. Mike and Jane met three years ago at a concert and became fast friends. A year ago, Jane worked up the courage to tell Mike she wants to be more than friends, only to see him kiss another. After that painful rejection, she created a list of resolutions for the year, in hopes it would put her in a better place emotionally and mentally. Nearing the Christmas holiday, she still has a few items to check off. When Mike finds out about the list, he makes it his mission to see the items completed before the ball drops in Time Square.
Mike and Jane finding love is wonderful. In high school, I crushed on my best friend for over a year before we finally went on a date, so I completely related to Jane’s emotional state. Ms. Eden captures the warring feelings of excitement and fear as Mike seems to be getting closer and closer to Jane.
The problem is, we don’t get to see Mike and Jane become best friends, so I just have to take Jane’s word on the matter. It’s a novella, so space is limited, but I would have preferred to know them as friends first. Mike goes from having a girlfriend to all-in with Jane in a matter of pages. And since we only have Jane’s POV, his apparent change-of-heart is confusing and potentially problematic since he supposedly has a girlfriend.
In the end, I enjoy Resolutions for what it is: a fun, easy, flirty novella about two best friends finally admitting to each other they are in love. I would like to try a full-length story by the author to see how she develops her characters and romance in a larger space.
Resolutions, a New Years Eve novella- My rating is 3 stars.
I’ve been trying to read more holiday novels and came across this little novella. This is the first Lucy Eden novel I’ve ever read and it was a pretty cute friends-to-lovers read.
The problem with novella’s is that they aren’t long enough to really pack much of a story in, now are they? Lucy and Mike have been best friends for three years. Lucy has had feelings for him almost the entire time. She came close to telling him how she felt last New Year’s Eve but couldn’t do it. This year, they find her resolutions list from the previous year and realize she only has two weeks to complete the list. Mike volunteers to help and their little adventure begins…
I would have liked to see how their friendship blossomed over the three years prior to where this story starts. They have a pretty funny meet cute and I can only imagine how they moved on from it. The story is cute. Mike’s volunteering to help Lucy complete her list opens up a lot of opportunities for them to spend more time together. There was a situation about halfway through the story that really made me mad at Lucy!! I kind of thought she was a little brat after that… There aren’t many support characters but Mike’s mother and Lucy’s grandmother play their parts well and, Mike’s mother imparts some wisdom on Lucy. There is wonderful banter between the main characters, they feed off each other and really complement each others sense of humor. In the end they get their predictable HEA.
Overall, this was a cute read. I’m not mad about reading it.
Lucy Eden is a new-to-me author, but after seeing her seasonal novella making the rounds on Instagram, I knew I had to read it. I am a sucker for friends-to-lovers romances, after all. Jane and Mike's story was fun and steamy with some sweet moments, too. Oh, and Monty Python references. I enjoyed this one!
This was quick and sweet. Do I think Mike could have went about it a little better with Jane? Yes. Luckily, their long friendship worked in his favor. Haha. Also, I read Chellie’s book first, and now I’m glad I did. She seemed like a different person in her book and I like her much better in Bear with Me! These novellas are fun, so I’ll definitely be reading Blind Date with a Book Boyfriend.
Omg I loved it!!!! This book had me all giddy and it was just simply amazing. I love a great Novella and this was one of them. Great beginning and ending. So many sweet moments that just leaves you in awe. I love Mike and Jane's story. A must read for those who love let say, a romantic-comedy novella for me :)
Resolutions by Lucy Eden is a 115 page New Year’s Eve romance novella that is described as a friends-to-lovers romcom full of alphas, steam, rock music, sarcasm, and Monty Python references.
Jane has always had a crush on her best friend Mike but chickened out last year on declaring her feelings because she didn’t want to lose her best friend. And then he ended up with someone else. Armed with a broken heart and a massive hangover, Jane wrote a list of New Year’s Resolutions intent on turning herself into “new and improved Jane” who doesn’t let her life pass her by. But now the year has flown by and there is just 2 weeks left for her resolutions to get checked off the list, when Mike spots the list he steps in to help. But of course all the extra time spent together is just reminding Jane of all the feels she has for him, but just maybe he’s interested too...
So this one had a strong start but then once they get together I was ready for the story to be over. But that was just the halfway point, I didn’t see the point of the rest of the story and it made the experience go downhill unfortunately for me. And after leading up to some really steamy times, it would cut away to the next day! Give me the steamy times. Also the Mike character was supposedly a Grammy winning musician which wasn’t brought up until half into the story and he’s over here dropping $1000 on ice cream sundaes. I don’t know, wasn’t a fan. 🤷🏼♀️
Cute Christmas/New Year’s romance! I do wish Jane had come up with her list of resolutions for herself, not to become the woman she thinks Mike wants. Her insecurities felt a little implausible to me because surely she’d been around Mike’s music industry events and met his various colleagues before and would know that’s just how that scene is. But on the whole, I really enjoyed watching Mike and Jane go from friends to lovers.
CW: pregnancy epilogue, brief reference to past death of parents and grandfather, diet culture
I think it's cute at the start, but could hardly get through it after their little "hitch" at about 40%. So not my cuppa, unfortunately.
I get that there needs to be conflict, but having it where she's loved him for a long time, and he's loved her for a long time, you would think there would be nothing to 'talk about'. Well, she says she's going off on her own for a bit to 'think' and I just can't even. So sorry :/
Resolutions is a warm hug that threatens to engulf your soul. From flirty to funny, irresistible to frustrating, Lucy Eden grabs hold of the heart and keeps it close for safekeeping. Sweet. Spicy. Sassy.
This book was packed full of gorgeous scenes and snappy dialogue from start to finish. LOVED IT! (Plus as I'm part of Lucy's romance critique group, I had the absolute pleasure of seeing it take form)
Monty Python references, friends becoming more, and New Year's Resolutions add up to a wonderful story from Lucy Eden!
After missing her chance to tell her best friend Mike that she has feelings for him, Jane is determined to not let life pass her by, and then Mike offers to help her with the list.
Jane and Mike are so sweet together. I love their friendship. It's full of fun and jokes that they share, but those moments when their attraction to each other comes through, you can see they should be so much more.
Novellas and novellettes can be difficult to pull off with the shorter page count in which to tell the story. However, Lucy does a wonderful job! I can't wait to try some of her other books.
Thank you to the author for providing an ARC for an honest review.

Post Date Recap:
Yeah, once again I am bringing holiday heat to this site. Just go with it people.
Disclaimer: I literally can not possibly gush over this book enough so my review might be incredibly biased and unhelpful because I adored every single word of this story. They even have the most ADORABLE nicknames for each other which is basically my kryptonite in a story so I was swooning from beginning to The End.
In the interest of transparency, this is actually my first Lucy Eden read HOWEVER I quickly discovered that Mike (our leading man’s) ex-girlfriend mentioned in Resolutions got her own story WITH A SHIFTER FOR A LOVE INTEREST I snapped that up and you’ll be seeing it featured here in the future.
Back to Resolutions though.
Jane is so easy to love and identify with as a leading lady. She is an elementary school teacher who has a heart for helping the less fortunate, was raised by a grandmother who instilled a love of volunteering in her, and happens to randomly quote Monty Python. What is not to love??
Mike is tall, dark, and handsome WITH FACIAL HAIR (my personal catnip) and never calls Jane by her name, which is also so precious and adorable. Our leading man also just-so-happens to break up with his girlfriend (who is pretty obviously a rebound girl) to be with Jane. Yep, that is the ex I mentioned previously.
Mike stumbles across a resolution list that Jane had made nearly a year prior and is determined to help her complete the items on the list (except for the losing five pounds because he insists she doesn’t need to, which is another dazzling reason to adore him) before the new year which is only a two week period. This leads them to ice skating and road trips… and falling in love. Yep, that was one of her resolutions because the night that Jane had planned to finally reveal her feelings for Mike (which happened to be New Year’s Eve) he basically trips and falls into a flash-in-the-pan relationship with a social media influencer who REALLY doesn’t fit with his personality. So Jane resolves to fall in love WITH SOMEONE ELSE since he is taken.
Of course, because this is a romance and happily ever afters are a guarantee, she doesn’t need to find another. This friends-to-lovers romance hits each of those with perfection. Not only is the friendship full and so realistic, the sex scenes are off the charts hot as can be. I don’t just recommend swiping right, I recommend swiping right, sending a DM, and making sure this book date doesn’t get away.
This is a short friends to lovers romance, and I loved the story. The book is from Jane's point of view as she deals with her emotions regarding Mike.
Jane and Mike are best friends but Jane has a crush on him. To try and take her mind off a missed opportunity she compiles a list of resolutions to complete, but once Mike see's the list he decides he's going to help.
I loved how these two were with each other, they really were best friends and could read each other like a book. Mike was the perfect boyfriend material, always thinking ahead and his ideas were always thoughtful.
This is a great book for an afternoon's read, nothing too dramatic but its not as simple as just getting together, they have things they needs to deal with first.
I loved how the epilogue was from Mike's POV, it gave a little inside into how he feels about the relationship.
This is the first book I've read by Lucy Eden and I think I may just stalk all her books now!
This book was an enjoyable read. The characters were well developed and you can feel their emotions of joy, friendship, love, doubts and shyness. The chemistry between the main characters Mike and Jane was great, the laughter, knowing each other thoughts, they enjoyed doing the same things. Their comedy banter between them had me laughing out loud at times. I felt bad for Jane because she would always put herself down because she didn't feel her looks were beautiful compared to other women that Mike had dated. I enjoyed reading this book, which grabbed my attention from the beginning to the end and left me wanting more. I recommend it to read and look forward to reading more by this author. Cassandra H.

A cute friends to lovers but there was some weird character building. It's like halfway through the novelette before you find out Mike's a former rock-star and that's how he's buying $1000 ice cream sundaes. Jane's introduced as a philanthropic, champion gift wrapping, kindergarten teacher - but I didn't ever feel those things in her character. She doesn't show a particular love of children, she passes on opportunities to join her grandma at the soup kitchen, and just in general seems to only be defined by Mike. I'm not expecting full novel-length characterization in a novella, but Eden can do it in a short time. Once Mike's history is actually introduced, it's used to give him some really good depth. There's a conversation between him and his mom, who also had some musical success in her youth, about how he knows he's done touring that gave me a lot in a very short time.
Character Chemistry: They are pretty darn cute together.
Plot: In an attempt to stop being such a weenie after failing to tell her best friend she’s in love with him, Jane sets out to tackle a huge list of resolutions. When said best friend sees the list, he volunteers to help her finish them off before the New Year.
Overall: I just want to pinch their cheeks because of all the cuteness.
I liked this one more while I was reading it than I did once I started thinking about reviewing it. I’m not so excited about how Lucy characterizes Mike’s ex Chellie as lesser than based on her good looks and social media savvy. Eden does a successful job of writing great scenes of Mike wooing Lucy with activities he’s thought up specifically to fulfill her resolution goals, and some steamy sexy times, it felt like we were missing the quiet moments between the characters to let the shift of perceptions settle. Which meant that while the relationship building from friends to more worked for me (even with Mike not leading with the fact that he had broken up with Chellie), the narrative felt uneven in places.
Three-year friendship to Forever! This is about Jane and Mike. They have been friends or, better yet, best friends for the past three years. Now he is dating this social media influencer, and she doesn’t understand why but they have been together for a year, or at least it will be in the New Year. Mike is helping Jane out when he discovers a New Year's Resolutions list, and as all have not been done, he takes it upon himself to make sure she completes them before the year is up, which they don’t have that much time left as it is almost Christmas. The things Mike does is funny, and as Jane is secretly in love with him, she plays along because it’s Mike. I love these two and love the stories behind the other characters.

Tropes/Themes: Friends to lovers, holiday romance, family elements
My Review: My first read of 2023! An adorable holiday romance that was fun to start the New Year with. Jane and Mike were a cute couple, I loved watching their relationship as it developed into more than a friendship. The whole checking things off a New Year’s resolution list was such a neat concept. Mike was so supportive and made checking things off Jane’s list much more entertaining. I didn’t get all the references that were sprinkled quite heavily throughout the story, which made me feel like I was missing out on certain things. Not all of the humour was my cup of tea so not quite a five star read. If your looking for a short holiday romance with a happy ending, I would definitely recommend this one.
Resolutions is a sweet, quick friends-to-lovers romance that’s perfect for a cozy New Year read. Jane has been in love with her best friend Mike for years, and when her New Year’s resolutions accidentally put her feelings front and center, things finally start moving in the right direction.
I loved the supportive friendship between Jane and Mike—it felt warm and genuine, and their chemistry was easy and natural. The resolution list was a fun, seasonal touch and gave the story a cute structure. While I wish the novella had a little more depth and time to fully explore their emotions, it was still charming and satisfying for a shorter read.
Overall, this is a light, feel-good romance with sweet moments, mild steam, and a hopeful message about taking chances on love. Perfect if you’re in the mood for something quick, cozy, and heartwarming. 💕📖
This may be a shorter story, but it is packed full of all of the feels! I haven't got one bad thing to say about this story. I loved it from the first page, and I eagerly devoured every yummy morsel of it. Mike and Jane are quite possibly the epitome of everything that you would want your relationship to be. Best friends, lovers, Monty Python fans. They both love Grandma's cookies, trivia, and music. They are so amazing together! Can I just say that every woman should have a Mike in her life. He was just.....perfection! So swoon-worthy. Trust me when I say that you will love this story. It left me feeling so happy! Thanks for another amazing story, Lucy Eden!
