Ms. Maitland's interests are as varied as her characters in this stunning collection of short stories about women's lives. From classical mythology and folk stories to inexplicable accidents of history and tales of the supernatural, these narratives "are infused with a feminist awareness and . . . deserve to be read out loud" ("Ms.")
Sara Maitland is a British writer and academic. An accomplished novelist, she is also known for her short stories. Her work has a magic realist tendency. Maitland is regarded as one of those at the vanguard of the 1970s feminist movement, and is often described as a feminist writer. She is a Roman Catholic, and religion is another theme in much of her work.
I won't rate because tee bee aych i only got halfway through. I did enjoy it at first, but it quickly felt like I was reading the same story over and over again. Woman sad. got some terfy vibes but also that's just me
Maitland is a master of reworking classic narratives, whether it's the fairytale of Hansel and Gretel, as in the title story of the collection, or Greek mythology. Brilliant philosophical stories with rich symbolism.
