Diomedes 'Dio' Alms is the middle child of the famed, feared Alms criminal dynasty. Content to spend his time jumping horses and gallivanting with the ladies, Dio skates under the radar of mob politics... until he doesn't.

Mars, an assassin with a penchant for lipstick who has already made Dio question his sexuality once, pops up out of the blue with a proposal. Well, more of a demand. He wants to be Dio's plus-one to the most exclusive event of the year: the fifty-second birthday of the universally feared William Izawa.

Their fake dating goes off the rails as soon as they arrive. Izawa's birthday bash centers around deadly games and the guest list is littered with ghosts from their paths. Worse, the cold-blooded Mars faces a very real danger of falling for his hot, hapless hostage, and Dio must tackle a philosophical question for the ages:

Is it really gay if the other guy is disguised as your female fiancée?

Full disclosure - I love all of Daniel May's books. If you're looking for an unbiased review from someone who approaches each of his books giving equal weight to things they like and dislike, this review will not be helpful to you.

I fully enjoyed this romp. I hesitate to completely call it a romance novel. (This is true of many of May's books). I was entertained, surprised, and amused. I laughed. This had more of a lighthearted plot than War Games, along the lines of Blood Sports. Lots of horsey tidbits. I loved Dio, and Mars, and Peaches.

If I had to pick one thing I wished were a bit different, it would be the romance aspect. I get that this was a sort of instalove book, but I wanted more interaction and more interaction between the MC's. There was a lot of excellent and suprising chemistry between the MC's, but we didn't see enough of it on page.

I put off reading this one because the setup we got in book 2 just didn't have me that interested, and I was worried I'd just not connect with this one, but I ended up enjoying it more than expected! I really enjoyed the main characters a lot and their connection and tension was seriously fantastic. We get an interesting continuation of the sort of ongoing plots, but I felt like the author was trying to convey a lot and didn't totally give enough information, so I was left a little confused about what was going on, and i'm a bit unclear where this series is headed. The first half of the book was really solid, but the second half felt rushed and a bit sloppy, which is a shame. The lovely build we were getting between Dio and Mars seems to suddenly flip to an insta-love situation out of nowhere, and I still have no idea what actually happened with the Man Hunt. I'm also high key SUPER pissed about the fact that the literal entire book is building to the fact that Dio really wants Mars to fuck him, and then... we do not get any fucking in the book. Like, I actually though I must have accidentally skipped ahead when the book ended because it was so bizarre to not follow through on basically the only thing that was clearly promised throughout the book, and I ended up leaving the book disappointed.

For 282 pages this went very fast and was definitely a “book 3 of a series that isn’t finished,” AKA it did not answer pretty much any of the plot questions it raised. But I loved Dio and Mars, and the evil-private-island a la Westworld was fun, and the murderhorses were great as usual. Looking forward to the next book in the series, whenever it may appear!

2⭐️ It pains me to do this because I adore Daniel May. But I don’t know what happened here… this book was just lacking in everything.
Dio and Mars had no personality whatsoever. They felt very muddled and watered-down—and Dio barely even spoke at all. The plot was just so slow and bland, I was bored and ready to DNF after 25%. There was no humor, no angst, and no real spice. Ugh. I’m so sad and disappointed because I love this series.

What is it about these murderhorses?! I was absolutely riveted once more by the latest installment in this series. The plot was off to the races (I shall not apologize!) from the start.

Daniel May trusts his readers to keep up, doling out the information he thinks we need to know and nothing more. Would I sometimes like to know a few more details? Sure. But the story worked for me regardless. I have a deep sense of the characters, even if we don’t know all the particulars. That said, I was intrigued to see a few reviews mention this is part 1 of Dio and Mars’s story and I would be ecstatic if that’s true. There’s so much more I want to know about Mars and perhaps the follow up will be more focused on their romance.

Mars is all sharp edges and enigma to Dio’s golden retriever party boy. An unconventional choice but somehow they really work. Mars enjoys how easily he can get under Dio’s skin but he’s also drawn to his innate sweetness, no matter how foreign that might be to Mars. Dio, in turn, is confused by Mars for many reasons.

And that’s where I have to pause to discuss the treatment of gender. Mars cross-dresses as a woman, partly because it’s the perfect disguise in his line of work and, it seems, partly because he likes it. This was more clearly addressed in the previous book but Mars identifies as a cis man. He likes fucking with people’s expectations around gender. I had some concerns about how this was handled in book 2 but less so here. However, I’m a cis woman and certainly no expert. It’s entirely possible I missed something.

In any case, when Dio first met Mars, he believed Mars was a woman and he was very into her. Then he learned Mars was a man and he was still into him but confused because he thought he was straight before this. The confusion carries over into this book but Dio doesn’t spend too much time thinking about the how or why. He’s into Mars, full stop. And that makes him want to explore things further. They have such interesting chemistry. Some reviewers have complained about the lack of steam but I’ll counter that with the really hot pool scene. True, there’s no on page penetrative sex—it’s likely about to happen after the book ends—but penetrative sex isn’t the only kind of sex and what Dio and Mars get up to before that is just as valid. Plus, I like to think this is May’s way of messing with his readers. That said, if we do get a book 2, I will be into whatever sort of sex scenes he decides to give us.

This is a series that must be read in order and there might be benefit in also having read His, the first installment in the dark romance series Short Leashes. We learn more about Panoptes, the shadowy organization that Mars contracts for somewhat against his will, but I still have no idea what their larger aim is or how William Izawa is connected or the rest of the mafia families. Then there’s Dio’s mom and Morgan and the rest of the secondary characters. So many questions!! The murderhorses were as creepy as ever, making for some intense scenes, and then a whole other crop of questions as learn that Izawa breeds his murderhorses differently. I cannot wait to see what happens next.

Characters: Dio is a 27 year old equestrian. Mars is a crossdressing assassin. This is set in Boston and a billionaire’s private island.

Content notes: nightmares, MC and horse used as prey, cross-dressing MC, drug assault and abduction by MC, past murders by MC, physical assault, murderhorses, animal harm, horse death, racial slurs (past use by secondary character), past parental divorce, past death of Mars’s parents, on page sex, praise kink, alcohol, hangover, past drug use (brother), STD stigma, gendered pejoratives, gender essentialist language (countered and played with), ableist language, use of “spook” referring to spy, use of “war paint”

I have purchased every book in The Hanged Man series. Even though I had an advance review copy, I purchased the book. Diomedes, Dio to all, is the middle son of Jove Alms. Not the oldest, to take over the businesses. Not the youngest, expected to be a f*ck up. Dio is just drifting through life, attending parties, one night stands with beautiful women, and living the "aimless, manwhore life."

I was not even out of the first chapter when I said, "Holy $hit!", loudly. while in the eye doctor's waiting room. I was excited that one of my favorite characters from the previous books, William Izawa, strolled into the book. The book never really let go from that point on. I read it in one day because I had to. The growth Dio shows in the book is very interesting.

If you have read the first to books in The Hanged Man series, let me reassure you that your favorite "pets" make an appearance. I received an arc from the author. I wrote an honest review and bought a copy of the book.

This did not hit like I had hoped it would and I'm pretty sad about it. 😔 I loved Dio and Mars in War Games and was excited to finally get their story, but somehow I don't feel like I got Dio and Mars. Maybe I had too many expectations about what I wanted to see in their relationship? I don't know. I feel so torn. The book wasn't bad, but it wasn't what I wanted. It feels unreasonable to say that, but I feel like I read too many words about things that weren't Dio and Mars, and all I wanted was Dio and Mars. 💔

I connected so well with Nerva and Pascal in War Games, and I was looking for that connection with Dio and Mars. I didn't get that, so now I'm feeling sorry for myself. 😂 Don't mind me. I hope this hits better for everyone else. When they were together it was great. I just wanted more of that and less of other people.

I consider myself a hardcore May fan, I feel really blessed, that I found his books. I loved this series so far, (I think I still need to review those too), but I have to hold back a star.
So it started so deep and soulful from Dio's point of view, but I feel the circumstances of their love relationship around the middle.of the story was a bit anticlimatic. The action and the mishaps were fun to read. And I can live without the extra scenes, as they only available on patreon, and I'm sadly not a patron (but it also felt a bit weird, though I get it and respect the author's choice).
Just.. I think... what I'm trying to say is, the emotional build up and the chatarsis usually a bit bigger. Or I hoped for it? Maybe it's a me problem.

My favourite of the series so far. There's a lightness that never strays into "cosy" territory, and it's surprisingly hilarious. But fear not, Saturday Horse fans, it's also sexy, scary and dark at times, all wrapped up in Daniel May's exquisite writing style.

This author cannot put a foot wrong for me.

While Dio and Mars are a fun pairing from reading the other books, this story needs more everything: spice, plot, character and relationship building, and editing.

Man Hunt takes too long to get started, spending 70 pages to set up a fake dating trope, which it doesn't do much with at all, and then meanders along throwing in some spice, rather late if you're expecting the general patterns of a romance book. Since all the main characters of Man Hunt are bit players and have no agency, there's no tension because the real chess players make the meaningful moves off screen, and none of it is explained anyway. Then the story rushes into a HFN without resolving anything for Mars and by extension Dio, who presumably still hasn't been satisfied.

If Man Hunt was a movie, the entire book would've been Act I. Man Hunt essentially echoes Mars's approach to his situation: no plan and no outcome in mind, just get it done.

Bananananas as usual, but I will read anything with murderhorses and in order to get the story we all want: the hurt-comfort masterpiece that is going to be the White Rabbit’s story. I’m only dropping a star because I didn’t get the sexytimes ending I wanted.

3.5 stars!

This was hella confusing for me. I got the gist of the plot but the whole story seemed a bit all over the place. Maybe it's just me but I couldn't quite grasp the motivations behind a lot of things going on on that island. It's Izawa's birthday, yes. But what was Mars's purpose for going there, really? Did achieve what he came for upon Darling's death or capture or whatever?

And what of that failed manhunt? Dio didn't seem furious for having been thrown into a meat grinder. Even in his perspective, he wasn't baffled enough to question what just happened. Like, huh???

I kinda had high expectations because I liked Dio and Mars a lot from book but this one failed to come together to make a good story overall. I love this duo.

Dio's himbo vibes left me laughing most times and protective of him. His characterization just worked me. Mars as well, if it weren't for him I would've rated this much lower than 3.5.

Pity though that they didn't get to have penetrative sex onscreen. I would've loved to know how Dio would react to that.

The book also ended abruptly, it seemed really unfinished, too many questions and loose ends hanging around still. I feel like there should've been more and we're being deprived of that.

And will the series continue? Will we have Hadrian's story? Here's to hoping we do.

Witty, clever, steamy and just perfect

Daniel May is definitely a favorite. I’m starting to think that no matter what he writes, I’ll devour it and love it regardless.

It’s always incredibly refreshing when the writing is so good. It’s full of clever humour, the witty snarky remarks between Mars and Dio just made my day again and again.

And then the plot thickens, we see the old characters, meet new ones, get reacquainted with deeper levels of those we already knew. The enemies-to-lovers feel to this book is a totally added bonus. It’s just marvellous.

And if someone told me that a book about (sort of) horses and mafia would ever catch my mind I probably would have told them they are mad. But Daniel May just proves that no matter what the plot line is, when it’s written well, it can capture the reader in full grip and not let go until the last page. I absolutely love IT when an author surprises me this way.

Bravo. I can’t wait to read more.

I love Daniel May and think he is severely underrated. Blood Sports is one of my favorites and I love this entire series so much.

I was delighted with the writing in this, because it's so original and I've read a lot of books and that feeling doesn't come often anymore.

This book is only getting a 3 star from me because the ending was disappointing. It ended abruptly, about 3-5 chapters too soon. We got all the good stuff with Nerva and Pascal and this one just dropped off and for me missing a much hyped sex scene between the two main characters.

It's possible the gaps are on the author's patreon? I don't know it's possible I'm missing something but without more info I can only guess.

Funniest one so far

Found this one to be the funniest book in the series, Dio being a golden himbo is everything I need in a male leading character and to see Mars suffering due to him is great every time. The story didn’t feel complete, it ending rather quickly, though I did enjoy the book as a whole, especially Dio’s friendship with Bill, it just being nice to see a healthy relationship in an otherwise unhealthy world. The setting up for Hadrian’s book has me both excited and tense cause knowing him it’s gonna be a wild ride and his love interest is either gonna help level him out or is gonna be a menace like him and I am so ready for it!

I thought that the book about Dio would have been boring, but Mars really pulled it through. They are adorable together. Looking forward to the wedding.

I was also utterly blown away by the horsies. Dio, why did you not buy Peaches??? She is perfect! Intelligent, beautiful, loyal. I love her. Hopefully Izawa will give her away as a wedding gift.

It also looks like the next pairing will be Hadrian and Morgan?? Both are cool on their own, but kinda side eyeing it anyway. Sometimes too much of a good thing can be... well, too much. Well, usually May delivers so still up for it.

Unfinished

I loved this book just as I have the whole series so far but this book did not have a satisfactory ending. Is there a part two? I thought the next book was a new couple so I'm confused. There were a lot of unanswered questions and some I understand since there is an underlying story with the series but there was still unfinished business between Mars and Dio that deserves to be resolved.

Interesting Read

I have read all three books and loving this serious. But can say I do not know what is going on. So if the next book is the last one, hope it explains heaps, if it doesn’t you will be left thinking WTF but would have enjoyed the ride or there might be another book 🤷🏿.

Cannot wait for next book, three people come to mind who will be Hadrian’s love interest, hope we don’t have to wait long.

I really liked both these characters and thought they had an interesting dynamic. But this felt like half a book. The relationship was mostly sexual tension (and even that doesn't get a payoff) and most of the plot is left hanging. There were hints that the relationship was going somewhere beyond sex but the book ends before getting there. If there's a Book 4 that picks up where this one leaves off, I may change my rating. Tl;dr This was fun until the end which was a big letdown.

The best MM romance I've read all year. If you're thinking at book #2 was a little too dark and broody, this will cure what ails you. Fun, funny, sexy and a dash of legitimate horror in the third act. An over the top billionaire island with secret passages and mysterious strangers. A sharp-tongued French mother Alms? Stellar. I would have read another 100 pages and not gotten bored of any of these characters.

Dio as the dumb blonde, making so many poor choices but ultimately trying to keep the peace around him. Mars as the cynical assassin who doesn't quite understand the insane mobster/murder-horse world he's been adjacent to for so long, and who can effortlessly code switch between super toppy alpha male and a pretend woman gushing about pinterest bridal boards.

Thank you for writing these Daniel May. You deserve a bigger audience. Keep going!

Captivating

I continue to be at the same time puzzled and amazed at the genres MM romance appears in. This is perhaps the most strange of the lot so far and although at one point I considered putting it down, I’m so pleased that I didn’t. Writing 10/10, characters - deep, complex and entertaining. Really enjoyed.
