Saving Face Without Losing Your Mind: Bringing Mindfulness to Your Cosmetic Procedure

Rate this book
All over the world, plastic surgery is doing amazing things for people. But what happens on the inside? What’s it like to prepare for and recover from a cosmetic procedure? How does someone decide what to change and when –and when to stop? How can a patient prepare for the reactions they will get from other people—and from themselves? And what if the result doesn’t match expectations? What then?

Finally, there is a book written by a psychologist who can answer these questions and more. In Saving Face Without Losing Your Mind, Los Angeles-based psychologist Dr. Alan Goodwin draws on his years of helping patients approach the cosmetic procedure process with confidence, humor, and grace. Saving Face Without Losing Your Mind takes you directly into the therapy room. By using the very same tools his patients use, such as succinct journaling exercises, clear and relevant self-screening tools, and grounding and empowering meditations, mantras, and affirmations, you will personally experience the way mindfulness-based psychotherapy can transform the way you cope with universal sources of struggle such as uncertainty, lack of control, change, loss, aging, and fear.

If you are planning a cosmetic procedure, this book will be an indispensable companion at every stage of the process. But Saving Face Without Losing Your Mind is an uplifting, transformational resource for anyone seeking to cope with the reality of change. Everyone and everything is constantly evolving. Change requires each of us to make room for the inevitable joys and challenges life sends our way. Saving Face Without Losing Your Mind provides the tools needed to cope with all forms of change, whether occurring within ourselves, or outside of ourselves.

The New York City sidewalks were buzzing with life. The hustle and bustle of the city was invigorating and the overflow of people provided the perfect cloak to blend in. She walked down the street with a smile and her confidence exuded from her. But little did everyone know the battle within her. The fears and the failures. The need to want to be something or someone new.

Saving Face Without Losing Your Mind is a nonfiction book that talks about the growing world of cosmetic surgery. While I’m not looking to receive any, I did find this book fascinating as the author shared stories of people who have gone through cosmetic surgeries or were contemplating it in one form or another.

Reading the stories of people who were looking for a change, receiving care from a cancer diagnosis, fixing a defect, battling with the need to fit in or feel good about themselves… I was drawn into all of these stories. The mindfulness and meditation sections at the end of each chapter were also very helpful and calming and can easily be used by anyone.

In a world where people are just striving to be the best, this book had some great nuggets of things to think about and to realize we are all human and we all struggle and there is no shame in that.

Ok, I have to say that surgery, botox or fillers of any kind are not for me (not yet).. the thought of altering my face scares me to death and I honestly believe that I should age as gracefully on my own as I can- Plus I am terrified that I would become unrecognizable.. lol⁣
That being said let's talk about this book.. ⁣

I was highly intrigued to read this book by Dr. Goodwin, what grabbed my attention was some of the techniques he shares for someone considering to go down this path of cosmetic surgery - things like journaling and meditating, there is a chapter on what the Buddha has to do with surgery, this for me was a great chapter.. I enjoyed he talked about self reflection and changes begin within us first.. ⁣
This was overall a very insightful read because it helps with many steps that should be taken before considering such a life altering surgery.. If you are considering surgery, I do highly recommend reading this book for some very helpful and insightful tips.. ⁣
