I won this book through a Goodreads Giveaway, and I was not prepared to find myself reading a book written by a healthcare executive. I am pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and Global Health concentrating on Health Policies and Systems with hopes of continuing my education with a Master’s in Healthcare Administration (MHA). This book was an excellent prelude to my career path. Heidi Raines wrote, “The next decade in healthcare safety will have as its focus prioritizing the many voices engaged in the care experience: the voices of patients, their caregivers, and all healthcare workers.” I hope to be a part of the cohort to make this happen.
The current culture of biomedicine lacks an empathetic response to medical care models, and Raines offers real solutions to implementing a just culture. Patient and employee safety should be of the utmost importance when it comes to the high-risk environment in which healthcare is delivered. Encouraging reporting for both mistakes AND near misses is crucial to creating a more just culture and preventing strain on the system, including stressed employees. Heidi Raines is clearly an expert in her field, and I hope to see her proposed framework implemented in the near future.
