Shared Voices: A Framework for Patient and Employee Safety in Healthcare

Rate this book
In Shared Voices, author and entrepreneur Heidi Raines shows how to systematically ensure the safety of patients and staff at healthcare facilities. Most medical errors occur because of flawed systems, not reckless practitioners, and systems can learn from errors. A just culture of care that protects everyone is possible through a framework of near-miss and incident reporting, equitable follow-up, analysis, and learning.

Heidi, the founder and CEO of Performance Health Partners, has dedicated her career to designing solutions for healthcare organizations in need of knowledge and technology to deliver safe, equitable, and quality care. In this book, she argues that the way to foster more safety in healthcare facilities is to create organizational structures centered around reporting incidents and near-misses, then use systems thinking to resolve and prevent issues.

And the best path to do this is to give voices to all healthcare workers by encouraging them to speak out and report observations about their work. Active staff engagement not only keeps patients and employees safe, but it also combats burnout and turnover.

As points of care grow and training levels vary, it is paramount for healthcare leaders to establish a framework that sets caregivers up for success at every level and in every type of healthcare organization. Modernization may seem labored at first, but its longer-term results—including overall reduction in serious safety events, and the saving of lives—are ultimately the drivers of innovation.

Shared Voices is Heidi Raines’ latest contribution to the world of healthcare patient and employee safety. She holds a Preceptor Faculty position at Tulane University’s Master of Health Administration program and serves as Board President of the American College of Healthcare Executives Women’s Healthcare Executive Network. Raines has received awards for innovation and executive leadership and was named one of the Top 100 Influential Entrepreneurs in Technology.

I won this book through a Goodreads Giveaway, and I was not prepared to find myself reading a book written by a healthcare executive. I am pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and Global Health concentrating on Health Policies and Systems with hopes of continuing my education with a Master’s in Healthcare Administration (MHA). This book was an excellent prelude to my career path. Heidi Raines wrote, “The next decade in healthcare safety will have as its focus prioritizing the many voices engaged in the care experience: the voices of patients, their caregivers, and all healthcare workers.” I hope to be a part of the cohort to make this happen.

The current culture of biomedicine lacks an empathetic response to medical care models, and Raines offers real solutions to implementing a just culture. Patient and employee safety should be of the utmost importance when it comes to the high-risk environment in which healthcare is delivered. Encouraging reporting for both mistakes AND near misses is crucial to creating a more just culture and preventing strain on the system, including stressed employees. Heidi Raines is clearly an expert in her field, and I hope to see her proposed framework implemented in the near future.

Given copy for review

Raines has a very good work in this book. Logistical systems in general are bone dry which is a huge issue when it comes to healthcare. That's doubly hard when balancing the usually hanging by a thread work culture found in healthcare as well as handling patients.

In this book Raines outlines the framework for a better less toxic staff-patient-administration relationship that focuses on learning from mistakes as much as seeing where mistakes could be made and prevented. The stress on an open administration with staff that encourages learning from issues versus fear of failure is really wonderful to see. I especially liked the stress on accountability and her approach to more effective reporting. Patient safety helped to reinforce what seems to be common sense but isn't talked about nearly as much as it needs to be.

Overall a great way to reframe and teach safety that's approachable and well laid out.

Did not finish.
I was hoping this book would be helpful for those of us on the frontline as well as how to work together with upper management in creating safer patient environments. It was aimed more at assisting those in upper leadership in discovering what policies, procedures, and processes are most helpful to implement. It seemed to have lots of great ideas and things that would be helpful for upper management to better understand how to implement evidence based practices. Due to it being aimed at upper management, I chose not to finish it, but I do believe it can be a helpful resource for those in a position looking to implement changes within their organization.

A logical path forward

This is a good read for anyone using the healthcare system. It is very informative and makes everyone, including patients, more aware of the safety issues facing the healthcare system. The systemic approach to improving heathcare safety measures. It is well researched and a strong argument, but, like most changes for the better, it will be an uphill battle to make these changes the new industry standard.

Repetitive

Basically, making things better in healthcare is predicated on reporting. Systems need to be implemented to allow people to report incidents and near misses without fear. They need to be able to leave enough detail to clearly explain what the error was. Then it needs reviewed and policies/procedures/products need to be implemented.

I won this book from Goodreads. I think that the book as whole was full of good information but I think this book would be better suited for someone in health care not a patient. It may also be a good book to use as a resource in a Nursing class.
