Little José-Louis was born in Neuilly-sur-Seine on 28 August 1962 and became passionate about good comic strips so quickly that at the age of 13, he founded Bizu, his own fanzine. He then established various illustrated anthologies for Bédérama, offering compilations of work by authors such as Franquin, Binet and Andréas.

To satisfy his passion for reading, he got a job with the Temps Futurs bookshop at the start of the 1980s and, together with friend and companion Jean-Luc Fromental, he took part in the production of the works of L'Année de la Bande Dessinée), published by that Parisian temple of cartoons and science-fiction.

His first articles started to appear in Metal Hurlant and he became a press attaché for Humanoïdes Associés in 1983, then became their collections editor. His first scripts were illustrated by Serge Clerc ("Les mémoires de l'espion"), Arno (Anton Six and "Kriegspiel"), Franz ("Mémoires d'un .38", in collaboration with Fromental), Max ("Panzer Panik") and Biard ("Le 38° Parallèle", in collaboration with Rivière).

It was working with François Rivière on scripts and with Philippe Berthet for illustrations that he commenced his most ambitious series in 1983, "Le Privé d'Hollywood". Fuelled by the old-style detective novels by Stuart Kaminsky and the initial works of the Série Noire, this reconstruction of an America which disappeared a long time ago has retained all of its charm, a fact confirmed by its reissue as a complete version in 1999.

From 1989 to 1991, he wrote scripts for Francis Vallés" trilogy of the adventures of the reporter Dorian Dombre (for Glénat) and endeavoured to bring back memories of Jerry Spring with Franz ("Fureur Apache", for Alpen in 1990).

In 1991, he and Jean-Baptiste Gilou took part in the creation of La Sirène publications in which he published a monumental monograph on film director Henri-Georges Clouzot. A man with taste and many talents, he was also assistant editor in chief on Salut Les Copains and presenter on TF 1, but writing remained his biggest pleasure and it is therefore no surprise to find several of his novels in the catalogue of Série Noire and other popular editors.

In 1997, he worked with Marie-Ange Guillaume on editing a biography of René Goscinny for Actes-Sud and he provided the script to "Timbrés rares" for Antonio Cossu and Louis Joos.

A new year and last years new release of a Mortimer & Blake comic, which is a great way to start a new year.

Mortimer is going to visit an archeological dig in the Oeral in Russia when his friend running the dig does a horrible find which has little to do with archeology. When Mortimer starts digging into the matter and visits a nearby out of order sanatorium he finds out that trouble has a name he knows too well.

Blake goes and visits a secret meeting of various intelligence services and on the way home his friend from the German intelligence gets shot after the funeral he meets another member of the same intelligence service and again there is an attempt. This time it leads towards an undercover job in east-Berlin.

In east Berlin Blake and Mortimer meet again and they will attempt to stop a crime which could alter the worlds history as we know it.

At the same time an American President visits Berlin for 8 hours, his visit will be the catalyst in this latest Adventure for both hero’s.

This time the story is less fantastic with amazing aircraft instead it is a dark spy thriller with some science involved and a certain Olrik still hellbend on destroying the world.
An excellent return from our English gentlemen that does give good old 007 a run for his money as usual.
Another great chapter in the stories about Mortimer & Blake and one I am sure would satisfy Edgar P. Jacobs and show him his creation still going strong after so many years since their introduction in Secret of the Swordfish.

8- A solidly plotted installment in this classic comic book series. Other than a similar series (Yoko Tsuno) this keeps up the level of storytelling (thrillers and spy thrillers taking place post world war II with some SF-elements thrown in) and the level of the art (only the best Ligne Claire artists here that emulate the classic look, while making the backgrounds and expressions just a bit smoother). Are the new issues as good as the first ones? No. They are less surprising for one. But they also read smoother for modern audiences (more important parts for women, more character development for Blake and Mortimer both). And having evolved into historical fantasy (instead of contemporary as the first parts were) these books can delve deep into historical research and documentation while at the same time giving interesting commentary from our own point of view. For example, here there's a quite positive depiction of some characters in Russia that, I think, would not have been possible during the original run of the series.
I thought this was a great addition to the series. I hadn't read a lot about it beforehand. I thought it would all take place in Berlin and would be a quite down to earth spy story, but boy, was I wrong. This deals with historic events (it takes place in 1963), has some great SF-concepts, some great turn arounds and even some good action.
Of course, if you read this series, you expect long stories, with a lot of text. And a lot of unnecessary explanation (boxes describing what takes place). These are comicbooks for readers. But I can live with that. And I will certainly read this one again!

Cold War skullduggery on both sides of the Iron Curtain and Berlin Wall. JFK is involved, Blake and Mortimer save the day, and of course Olrik is up to no good. The usual excellent mix of science fantasy, espionage, and adventure.

A very good entry in the Blake and Mortimer series and one that nails down a specific date for the action. (Kennedy's 1963 speech in West Berlin.) The narrative here is all cold-war era espionage with, I suppose, a small bit of science fiction embedded in the plot. A plot which has a few horrific turns and feels a bit more complex than it turns out to be. Because if there's a flaw, it's the inclusion of ever-present antagonist Olrik into the plot. Also, if I am to understand the events of this story, we're to believe that . . .

I didn't quite understand why the characters constantly referred to Kennedy as "Prince" (a code name that became unnecessary once Kennedy actually entered the story) until the final panel where he is only then referred to by name. It made me wonder if this was supposed to be an alternate history with a "President Prince" . . . but nope.

Anyway, among the better of the Blake and Mortimer volumes.

For anyone willing to suspend a few of their beliefs, and add a dab of spy craft and some sci-fi to a historical event, this graphic book will be fun to read. It mixes a mad scientist, plastic surgery and brainwashing to create a doppelgänger who will be substituted for a real person by a madman seeking to create mayhem in order to achieve world domination and control during JFK’s trip to Berlin in 1963.

So sit down, relax and enjoy yourself reading this roller coaster of a story with an old fashioned B picture plot.
