Mellora is losing her family one by one. Her quixotic father reads himself into chivalric madness, while her mother sinks into a depressive cycle of mundanity and isolation. All the while, Mellora reads the old romances whilst dreaming of one of her own, and in doing so, unwittingly summons the Legion of Air and Darkness, which possess the local congregations across denominational divides. Thus, Mellora is cast across the island of Manzanas while being haunted by a mysterious woman with flaming hair known as Aliena the Morrígan.

Celtic and Hispanic elements are mashed up in this post-colonial reimagining, defamiliarizing the old chivalric romances which commence in a lighter Princess Bride spirit before darkening, like the passing day, into a brooding, uncertain Lovecraftian atmosphere.
